At first sight, Vila Rica,or Ouro Preto as itwas formerly called,
is highly seductive. At adistance, it appears to be acluster of small, well-builtwhite houses, perched upon
the protruding edges of thisseptentrional mountain. Aswe approach it, however,we find that these objectsare none other than a fewof the churches and publicbuildings, and that thedwellings are deep down the
interjacent valleys. The road reaches the town
through its Western border, crossing a river that runsbelow it []
Vila-Rica might be oneof the most oddly situated
places in the whole world, and only the mighty love of
gold could have originateda large town in such a
position. However, its streetslook dignified and its pavingstones even more so []
There are ten churches, and a few of the oldestones are made of rammedearth. Many are pompouslyornamented with beautiful
paintings and images. Oneof the best ones is strangelydeprived of windows; and
the effect it produces uponthe spirit, lighted only byits lamps although it isbroad daylight outside, istruly powerful. I enteredthese sacred buildingsand examined them withunrestricted liberty, and,

Our rst sight of Mariana, once the settlement of Carmoand now raised to the highestcivic honors, thanks to itsloyalty, was through the tearthat gradually expands untilit forms a valley of steepslopes, where the river runs.
Its effect is unusually graceful, since, amidst the nakedrocks whose anks producea telescopic effect, we cansee a beautiful plain beyond, sprinkled with houses andchurches. As we advanced, the sight was naturally
narrowed, until we climbeda hill forming one of its sidesand from whose summit itonce again opened beforeour eyes more freely. At thatspot there was an unnishedchurch devoted to Saint Peter,
and three hundred feet belowus the plain where the town isfound; its churches crownedthe hillocks and boulders onthe surrounding mountains, the Bishops palace withits gardens adorned the
perspective to the right, and
the college with its quartersextended beyond it.

Ouro Preto, the politicaland administrative capital,Mariana, the religious capital.Centers of power with parallel
vocations in the former gold-mining region, continuouslyemulatingeach other in thequest for titles and benets.
Although Mariana was therst village and town in themining region and the seatof the Bishopric since 1745,
Ouro Preto was the capitalduring Colonial and Imperialtimes, a supremacy lost inthe Republican era withthe construction of the newcapital, Belo Horizonte.
The lossof position asstate capital certainly helped
preserve the heritage of bothtowns, located a mere 19kmapart, so close to each otherthat during the height of the
gold cycle it was thought thatthey would eventually merge.
With the exhaustion of
the gold mines, a differentdestiny awaited Ouro Pretoand Mariana, now two majorhistoric towns in the stateof Minas Gerais, holdinga representative collectionof surprising monuments

Apesar de ter mantido ostatusde capital, recebendoem 1825 o ttulo de ImperialCidade, Ouro Preto nosofreu grandes transformaesurbanas ao longo do sculo

The decisive factor,
