Self-Portrait

John George Brown nasceu em Durham, Inglaterra, em 11 de novembro de 1831.

Entre 1849 e 1852, estudou na “School of Design” em Newcastle-on-Tyne, enquanto trabalhava como cortador de vidro. Entre 1852 e 1853 estudou na “Trustees Academy” em Edimburgo, Escócia.

Após se mudar para Nova York em 1853, ele ingressou na “National Academy of Design”.

Em 1855, Brown se casou com Mary Ann Owen.

Em 1866, ele se tornou um dos membros fundadores da “Water-Color Society”, da qual foi presidente de 1887 a 1904. Brown tornou-se famoso por suas representações de meninos de rua, engraxates, músicos e vendedores de flores e de jornais, encontrados nas ruas de Nova York.

Brown exibiu muitas de suas pinturas na “National Academy of Design”, entre 1858-1900, onde também lecionou por muitos anos.

Morreu em Nova York, em 8 de fevereiro de 1913.
