ohn McCain on our Natural Heritageohn McCain and Sarah Palin know that we face immense environmentalhallenges that will impact the quality of life we leave our children and futureenerations. In the Senate, John McCain has been a consistent advocatef conserving America’s natural resources and promoting environmentaltewardship. A McCain-Palin Administration will reect the guidingrinciples of Theodore Roosevelt, America’s foremost conservation president.

Our nation’s conservation movement began over a century ago as westwardxpansion encouraged clearcutting logging practices, unsustainable grazingolicies, and the overhunting of game and sh populations. Visionaries suchs Teddy Roosevelt, John Muir, and Ding Darling rallied Americans behind

nprecedented efforts to save our wild landscapes, critical watersheds, andmigratory bird corridors. Their work led Americans to embrace principlesf multiple-use public lands management and science-based resourceonservation. This heritage must be embraced and reignited to meet thehallenges we face.

Our national parks, national seashores, wildlife refuges, and nationalmonuments embody America’s commitment to preserving our most preciousatural treasures. Unfortunately, the failure of Congress to devote the properesources toward operations and maintenance has caused many park units toall into disrepair. As we reconnect with our outdoor heritage we must focusn maintaining these areas. From the Grand Canyon to Gettysburg, from thendiana Dunes to the Everglades, we must preserve the cultural signicancend natural beauty of our most wild and historic places. These irreplaceable

andscapes deserve our renewed attention.

very year, more than 45 million Americans venture to our forests, marshes, mountains, lakes, and streams to pursue the traditions of hunting and shing. Our sportsmen are citizen-stewards of these sensitive areas and play a vitalole in maintaining the abundance of wildlife found on our public lands.ndeed, the sportsmen community is perhaps our strongest advocate forrograms that encourage habitat protection and wildlife conservation. Aibrant hunting and angler community is essential to supporting our state andederal game and sh agencies.

America’s “no net loss” wetlands policy is not being achieved. Rapidrbanization and poor water resource management continue to claim aonsiderable portion of our delicate wetlands. Therefore, we must develop

water resource policies that will protect these important natural assets forhe benet of all. This means employing long-term science-based strategieshat properly manage strained freshwater resources, like the Great Lakes

watershed, and promoting polices that will preserve sensitive areas like theverglades and the Louisiana coastal marshes.
