Se incendia, el tiempo, de sí mismo;

perpetua, a fuego lento.

Mouth of fire translation by the author

I do nothing here but come undone

in this whirlwind of seconds:

thread, this pulse of mine, of time that threads us:

eager time, mouth of fire

where history burns and burns again

in an endless conflagration.

At the end of every moment

I rescue the ashes that I become

where I will be born again

birthed from death

on the threshold of the moments to come.

Time blazes on itself;

and in its everlasting flame

blaze that devours everything

and turns it into dust of nothingness

spring of shadows

death revives us

perpetual, simmering.

Tierra,

gris, por eso del frío que se queda;

I have a doll dressed in blue courage translation by Kimrey Anna Batts

I have two little girls in my blood.

One skips over the clouds until they bring her back to Earth,

while the other, I am unsure if I know her.

Nor do I know if we love one another

but in a low voice I ask her to leave

so that my happy girl, the one who jumps along the borders

of a blue sky

which today is orange with the sunset,

rainy because of the salt on my face

red like the negative test in my dress

gray, because of that lingering chill;

comes back before they do.

A dromedary girl about to bury herself

beneath the weight of her own guilt,

sends me a half-smile from the windows of the silence

that inhabits us.

Poor girl wrapped in the dry leaves about to fall

from a twisted tree,

like a finger pointing at her apostasy

and the dirt beneath her nails.

There is a man who profits off my ethnicity

and succeeds in having them write me a sad poem.

Life should be wept over if they write you a sad poem.

Forgive me my little girl for speaking of you

in the first person

this time I promise to seal the door

so no one can spy on you between the cracks.

Yo

sentada a tus pies

lo sueño todo.

Portico translation by Elizabeth Rose

Birds emerging from your mouth

fill the day with reverberations.

The light they leave

tangles between threads of the distaff

erupting in a transparent tapestry.

Song flows out

as you open your chest

and rest against the wall.

I

sitting at your feet

dream all of it.

Adiós al brasier

Samanta tiró el brasier, ese día,

decidió dejar el cinturón de castidad en casa;

Goodbye bra translation by the author

Samantha threw the bra.

That day, she decided to leave her chastity belt

at home;

she went out on the street with her breasts painted

of butterfly,

she went out on the street with her butterfly

painted breasts

a butterfly with sparkly, long, purple wings.

a butterfly with long, purple sparkling wings.

Outside, she met others other women,

silver women of silver breasts.

She walked among the people,

flapped her wings breasts,

her breasts wings.

I took a picture of her with the Angel of Independence

behind her back.

Samantha was a dancer butterfly among the masses.

Guadalupe Ángeles

Dentro

―verde línea abierta a veranos muertos‖.

Inside translation by Claudia Patricia Sandoval Chávez

The gesture with which I drew your internal organs

was not agonizing.

Then I covered them with fine lines of black ink.

That amniotic bag was another image of your smile.

That precarious representation of your femur was what I hid,

seizing the momentary impulse to see your blood on my arms,

in the simple palm of one of my hands.

Now I could affirm that I drew thus some

of the thousand ways to understand

the violent spasm that attacks me when

you open abysses with words,

in that place whose name I do not know,

but it inhabits me entirely.

On the ground there are no remains,

no cloud has spelled in its physiognomy the shape

of that deep road

where I don't know,

so I calmly recite possible transformations:

"Gas chamber", "illogical device that makes flies disappear",

"Green line open to dead summers."

All maybe because yesterday in the mirror I found your eyes.

Look (your look said) we are not windmills.

But a little roasted coffee your eyes are.

They don't know that the unstoppable taste

of wholeness drags me

And sometimes I forget that your body

is a fragment of eternity.

How to ask absolute behavior from a young tree,

to a branch without eyelids, what is not your skeleton?

But to each name that I baptize this delirium,

the image of that prison with fine lines returns

(inside, the concrete substance that connects every muscle).

As if drawing you would blacken my last name

the first one I name myself with in the morning.

pensamientos

pero nada he de encontrar

acaso sólo objetos irreconocibles,

frutos de tu muy particular paraíso,

vedado a los ojos de los demás.

Page 21: AANNUUAARRIIOO DDEE PPOOEESSÍÍAA · 2021. 2. 21. · AANNUUAARRIIOO DDEE PPOOEESSÍÍAA DDEE SSAANN DDIIEEGGOO 22002200--2211 F rr a a cc tt a ll SA NN GDIIEEGOO NPPOOEETTRRYY AANNUUAALL

13

It is useless to manufacture non-existent intuitions

when words make the correlate of so much abyss,

what to see, touch, hear,

(acts to which we belong)

they give us back the certainty:

we are not made of infinity

the web of our bodies is not armed with names,

for this reason I instantly snatch a certain fear that is several:

Uncover yourself.

Break up.

Get out of position.

Identify yourself anthropophagically.

Reprimand.

Resolve.

Insult.

Talk to each other.

I make a single symbol with all of them.

(Leafless bird? Intermittent ray?).

and I happily prepare to rummage through the drawers of your

thoughts,

but I have nothing to find,

perhaps only unrecognizable objects,

the fruits of your very particular paradise,

forbidden to the eyes of others.

y Marlboro sabor clavo

mientras dibujamos campanas de Gauss

en nuestra libreta de hojas milimétricas

con los datos diarios de contagio

Sinapsis viciada dentro del cubrebocas

caricia tranquilizadora aroma a alcohol,

Confinement Vignettes translation by Nidia Alejandra Preciado Rodríguez

The confinement found me drinking a cup of coffee

with my grandma

and the half-eaten pancakes with cajeta

I found essential companions

in the long journey that this asymmetrical trapezoid room

has become with exponential equations

pasted on the flamingo pink wall

next to that kawaii cartoon they made of us

The alphabet with its beautiful 27 members

placed on the keyboard, Z so far from P

and G so close to H

they‘re beautiful too, and they know it

Cuarentena subida de días (Jitanjáfora)

¿Cero?

Post Quarantined be not

(Jitanjafora-Non-sense) translation by the author

Tube Be… Or not! Not Tube! No, knot!

To be pose. To be post. To beep post. To be, at the left.

Be, errant organism. Erring, to be.

Winter obfuscates while digiting tirelessly,

in this quarantine, soon to reach the hundreds,

and continuing to exist.

Err to be. Hell, to seek! Exit to live.

Tirelessly digiting an aging quarantine,

exceeding one hundred days of defeat;

heavily forced to retreat into lifeless windows,

stuck, in an amorphous time…

no dates, no deadlines, no deeds.

To be not tube! Be stone, be note, or

days begone… Life begone,

Oh quarantine, replead those days begone!

I can no longer doubt translation by Eduardo Padilla

The life of the bowels is like the life of plants,

quiet, dark, the deep and unconscious

earthly sphere of existence.

— Gustav Heyer

True, there is something false about my out of tune heart,

I‘m still haunted by the great nostalgia of throwing myself

on the ground,

of imitiating the hungry thrushes that drop

from the tree, entangled.

The pitiless miserere spurs me on towards sacrifice,

God will gather all his saints and give them life eternal, it

says,

but my pact with the Lord has become a putrid mist over my

simplest deeds,

the barren penance stokes the desire of the flesh.

My little solar system collapses.

I think about the crowd of beetles cracking my skin,

the grinding of teeth, the series of kicks; useless.

I get distracted by the flutter of lard and brown sugar and

the burning missal between my legs.

Flaming ships inside my head and the snail‘s white noise,

more white noise inside the snail‘s shell and the haughty

fragrance of salt and dough.

My little solar system collapses.

My calling grows stale; fated to become God‘s vomit

I can no longer doubt!

Between saintliness and beastliness

I bow to the earthly sphere of existence,

I let my will slip away!

I surrender to the peristaltic movement of the bowels,

let me drown in its slime, let me delight in its fullness.

My free will, if such a thing can be,

has chosen a temporary truce.

The mystical fiber renews itself, suddenly,

in the calm of the dinner table,

in the drowsiness that comes after I‘ve had my fill.

Llevo días buscando

Llevo días buscando un acicate, estruendo, rayo detonador

mas me encuentro espuela y no caballo.

Ask the dust.

ask the dust ask the dust

y me fui directo

grita

mi postrera lucidez.

I’ve Spent Days Searching translation by Lee Gould

I‘ve spent days searching for an impulse, a bang,

a detonating ray.

I feel like a spur without a horse

Lately it‘s easier to wring water from stones

than to weave signs, flocks, shoals, swarms, ant hills

That‘s what life is: a path without a path, bare intuition.

I confidently await a signal, a winged shadow, a bird an aria

but nothing: only whips, blows, fine-sounding rationales,

linguistic trifles, overwhelming silence.

How do you deal with drought? How do you invoke

the goddesses

of fertility, the fertility of god, how do you dance to them?

Why does the lightning come before the thunder?

The other day, I read a phrase somewhere

that in English is written: Ask the dust.

And Ask the dust was stuck in my head. I repeated it

obsessively: ask the dust ask the dust

And I went straight

to where the mucilage is the womb,

the nest that is not a bullpen,

where Yerma is a dry fountain

or a woman‘s name.

I knew nothing, I know nothing.

I barely felt

the cramps in my legs,

my breathing

a herd of amber-colored mares.

That‘s me, ladies and gentlemen

running from me into the distance, that‘s me

shouting

my last lucid words.

se visten con hojas y flores del naranjo;

Some Days translation by Ana Carlota Rosshandler

Some days zopilotes mirror the goldfinch‘s trill

while dancing evergreens

greet the sun.

Some days, gesturing sleazy scorpions

thirstily cling to slips with overpowering lust.

Some days wasps, flies and mosquitoes

drape themselves in leaves and orange blossom,

soaring the hair of loving young girls.

Some days, wood ceremoniously

scents the room and an ancestral prayer ascends.

Some days, rib caged dogs in hunger

flutter their tails and serpents intertwine their coils.

Some days. Not all.

Death is no stranger

It is born with us, we carry it inside

A twin presence

It dwells in tired brains and

It embellishes itself with black flowers

It a ghostly bird that breaks the night silence with its flapping

Pearl of the Pacific translation by Anthony Seidman

The moon-glazed night has a breath of iodine and saltpeter

and the boats stretch their arms towards the dock.

Water lapping the jetty creates rhythms that invite the moon

to dance as it rises over the mountain.

Two old sea dogs smoke slabs of tuna

while gazing longingly at the tourist boats

and recounting giant squids, marlins,

octopuses, sharks and mermaids entangled in their nets.

A dusk seal emerges suddenly, subcelestial,

and howls, emulating the wolf that inhabits

the northern forests.

Solo mantente alerta, no importa qué opinen,

y planea, a escondidas, destruir tu futuro.

If you are a child poet translation by Francisco Aguilar

Politicians will want you in their rallies,

cultural managers will save the grand finale for you

to close the local book fair with elegance,

old ladies from literary workshops will pamper you,

people will recite your poems at the latest book clubs,

you‘ll be the star of campus radio stations,

television morning shows,

your parents will talk to strangers about you,

you‘ll appear in Gente Bien magazine

surrounded by groomed up-and-coming novelists,

they‘ll cheer you on stage simply for sticking out your nose,

people will be courteous with your parents, but, above all,

they‘ll await, skeptical, for you to save them

from their boredom,

they‘ll compare you to Neruda, Benedetti, Gelman,

and they‘ll invite you to piñata parties, magician and

unsaddened clown shows, they‘ll make you host

of quinceañera parties, family gatherings,

theater plays for kids and adults

that will see in you the next Sabines.

Just stay alert, no matter what they say,

accept their gifts, their packs of candies,

their confessions about poetry that never came by,

and plot, in secret, to destroy your own future.

Everything is so Useless translation by Francisco J. Bustos

Today, everything around here has its own light

the silence that seems to be diluting on the cornices

outlines the contour of buildings close by.

A fear spreads through the length of the night

The silhouette of a man drags a cover,

nothing is known of his parsimony, of the waste he collects,

of the stale bread hidden in his pocket,

he curses and stammers, dissolving in ethylic blindness.

Sometimes, one fraternizes at gatherings,

you see the others, the usual ones, the lost ones,

matching in step and the look

on the terrible, related silence on pavements,

a simple impulse and you withdraw,

you cross the street on the wrong side,

adjust your neck, you concentrate...

The balance of what is human has been left without support

it exists like an ancient and exclusive metaphor.

The mirrors no longer show your face,

There, where you stand, you are a statistic, malleable mass,

reptilian numeral expressed in the quotidian payroll

everything is so useless at this hour,

like these words burning in thought

the same as that cigarette butt placed by some stranger

on the edge of my window.

Cuerpo

Body

translation by the author

The water that brushes your body

is the same that brushes my body

the pink of your pink shirt wet in the water

that floats over your body

prevail over the black stain of my body

while in a failed attempt I try to hug you

with all my strength I embrace the water

that surrounds your body.

My black shirt is the stain

I cover you with my black shirt ‒which is the stain‒

to try to surround you.

The sewage that chafe our pink bodies

it's stagnant water stuck in generations

of bodies that have spent through here

of bodies that, same than yours or mine, have swam this river.

The weeds at the edge of the river brushes our bodies

the weeds produce stagnation

our bodies are stagnation of a rescinded happiness

our bodies have given way to fatigue ‒daughter‒,

and with all my strength I tried to get you afloat from this

river ‒daughter‒,

but I couldn't: ‒forgive me.

Mr. Wall

Ahora no puedes saberlo

con el dominio asumiste imponer tu razón

separaste mapas

demarcaste cuerpos

pero tus planes fallaron

no esperabas que estuviera aquí para demostrarlo

Impón tus murallas en la geografía

levanta tus monstruos de seguridad

cuando llegue la hora sabremos como borrarlos

cuando llegue el momento

seguiremos aquí para recordártelo.

Sr. Muro translation by the author

I think you look at my face

but your gaze is fixed on my skin tone

I am the other outside the wall of your misunderstanding

with my presence alone you feel aggrieved

because of your whim that there are second-rate humans

It is useless to tell you that I have been here before

and that I feel the vastness of the desert regardless

of your limits

and that my blood is water-sand-time-glow

and I am all-embracing when I throw myself

into the mountains

Now you can't know

with the domain you assumed to impose your reason

you separated maps

you demarcated bodies

but your plans failed

you didn't expect me to be here to prove it

Impose your walls in the geography

raise your security monsters

when the time comes we will know how to erase them

when the moment comes

we will still be here to remind you.

and got on the school bus,

yes, the classic yellow bus,

to go to school.

There was a circus in the bus.

Say, balloon. “bəˈlun.”

The boy with a big tummy

would give her an order.

He was the ringleader.

The zebras, jaguars,

giraffes, and elephants,

all the animal applauded the boy.

The raucous cacophony

echo to this day.

She could not stand up for herself.

Even though she understood English,

she did not speak it.

She was a weird bug

for that circus.

The eleven year old girl

studied in the dark

until one day

she began to speak English.

In the bus where

the circus was,

the day came when the animals

stopped roaring laughter.

Clementina

Clementina translation by Tomás Di Bella

She is an old woman

that is not hiding.

Accommodates her lightness under the loft

and waits, looks away, beyond the mountains.

She clings like a withered flower

to a hope without first and last name.

Knows death, but knows more of oblivion.

She's just a grandmother

that walks her forgetfulness on the floor.

If you look at her, in the sparkle of her eyes

the night is reflected.

Her tongue is the driest thirst,

her skin, tanned with adventures,

it is not allegory of maps

because she didn't know about travel

she knew of torrents, of the deaths of others,

sore legs,

distance and madness,

infinite trains that rocked her hunger

with raw milk

on a route that shook her misfortune.

Her sorrow is alfajores cooked on firewood,

the dough of the zacahuil and the charcoal.

Memory seldom knocks on her door,

it does not remember the faces

but yes the recipes

the name of the flowers

the height of the trees

and the silence, which also fades

like her heart

that subtracts the minutes

keeping score

of the time remaining.

Sadness is a large animal that lurks in her eye

while she silently smokes

a Marlboro red and waits for the bell to begin

third shift

She takes care of five children cleans the house

prepares the food

arrives at the factory and packs boxes and more boxes

(she doesn‘t know how many)

but she does know that after twelve hours of continuous

mechanically moving her body

her soul disappears

and her back is nothing but a swollen, aching shell

Her face turned into a furrowed map carrying

the ravages of living

the payments of doing

of shifts to complete

For her the sound of the machinery has

become her favorite music

The stories of the other workers

at lunch time

are her favorite novel

For her there is no God

Everything is Deus ex machine

She lives waiting for the tightening of the bolt

that changes her life

(a small cancer showing up in the lungs)

while she keeps on smoking

while she keeps on waiting

for the bell to sound to begin packing

Thank you, playground, for giving me this translation by John Z. Komurki

I shall begin by saying that Jason Torchinsky is stupid.

It‘s clear that Cars is a post-apocalyptic movie

in which all humans have been slaughtered

by intelligent cars fed up with servitude.

Doubtless it began when a Japanese engineer

fell in love with a Lexus he was testing

and modded the AI to the point of no return.

Naturally, the engineer was run down and the rebellion began.

In a few hours they had swept away

everything that needed to be swept away.

Then they had a party.

How clean is the air now

thought "Lightning" McQueen.

Movimiento helicoidal

He aprendido a andar a rastras, a comer de la tierra raíces,

gusanos, flores.

A devorar

Helical movement translation by the author

I have learned to crawl and eat roots, worms, and flowers

from the earth. To drink drops of breeze nested in the stones,

in the fresh leaves, in the broken glass. To devour mollusks

that slide through my mouth and birds that fly over the guts of

the forest where I live.

From fuzzy collections of memory I emerged a newly

released animal. My will to conceive myself is sacred. My

skin, hair feathers of insomniac magnetic radar light. A flutter

of my eyelashes scans the city, the map of the century and its

circular ruins.

I am an animal of smell and hearing with a broken program. I

perceive the music that escapes from the cellars of

consciousness: I knock, call and open with the peace of my

tongue its invisible doors, burned, covered with ointments or

holy herbs. Upon entering I have discovered mirrors and

creatures that raise incomprehensible songs.

nuestro cerebro se entumecía al alcanzar

I was now the liquid that seeped beyond the subsoil

and the erosion of a video game that always

froze into game over

I wrote ―I am‖ in a poem

and Africa approached to tell me

y estallarse.

Ahora nace una forma inaugurando un cuerpo

y en la lengua hace descender

un poema cercano al alma

que por encima de tu letra

y la mía

habita un solo tiempo.

Poetry is a soul taking a form translation by Don Cellini

that rests in the kiss

above the bodies

and inaugurates the soul

turning the beds

to find the poem

which now resides in the silhouette of a gasp.

In the middle

the shape kisses a poem

to brush the soul with its teeth

and explode.

A form is born becoming a body

and on the tongue a poem

falls away close to the soul

one that, above your verse

and mine,

lives only once.

Estoy en ellos

Estoy en ellos, sin ellos. Encajonado en los cuerpos,

sin los cuerpos.

Las ramas son huesos de manos. Ven a tu fondo,

Escritura a cabeza

entregada. Leerás el terrón con labios puros.

Aún verdes tus uñas, sudorosa la voz, y yo, yo

en otras hojas, otra sombra, otro zumbido animal.

Curva del presente, digo, mientras el cielo

sube y crece, claro y oscuro. Mientras el cielo

sube y crece.

I’m inside them translation by María Cristina Hall

I‘m inside them, without them. Stashed in the drawer of

their bodies, without their bodies.

Branches are hand bones. Come to your depth,

they howl.

The whistle is a horse‘s muzzle. It spits and marks you.

Eyes glow like stones.

The boldo lifts a straight branch; I, on the other hand,

arch in moist flesh. Curve of the future, I say

to the bark, which is a clean machete.

The gust is a goat tongue. Writing to a surrendered

head. You‘ll read the dregs with pure lips.

Your still-green nails, sweaty voice, and me, me.

In other leaves, another shadow, another animal‘s hum.

Curve of the present, I say, while the sky

lifts and grows, clear and dark. While the sky

lifts and grows.

Tríptico de gatas

I

Una gata perpetua

erguida al borde del desconcierto.

Son horas en las que se queda

mirando fijamente

y solo contempla

la danza del espacio mudo

como en una película de Chaplin.

II

Una mujer

toma té de cerezas

y mira una gata

erguida en la blancura.

Sobre la mesa

un libro de poemas en ruso.

Ella intuye

que la gata sorda

y su lengua muda

son complementarias:

¿Cómo será leer y entender

grafías y gramática de un idioma

e imaginar el sonido de las palabras

sin saber pronunciarlas?

Triptych of Cats translation by Alexis Levitin

I

A timeless cat

frozen on the borders of bewilderment.

For hours she remains

transfixed, staring

with the blue profound of her eyes.

Only a window separates her

from a pair of small birds

playing in the tree outside.

Not knowing that

their trilling is harmonic,

she simply watches

the dance of silent space

as in a Charlie Chaplin film.

II

A woman

drinking cherry blossom tea

gazes at a cat

poised in utter whiteness.

Upon the table

a book of poems in Russian.

She senses

that the deaf cat

and its silent tongue

are complementary:

What would it be like to read and understand

the spelling and grammar of a language

and imagine the sound of its words

not knowing how they are pronounced?

tierra, lluvia y sol

Garden of Memory translation by the author

from my father I learned to love

the orchid cactus

epiphyllum with sumptuous magenta blooms,

the ones that last just three days

in his last year my father sang

traditional ballads every morning

to frighten away the future

I resuscitate his plants,

pull them down from where they've hung

forgotten in the overgrowth,

with sure hands plant them in new pots

with my mother

I learn about days in the family garden:

cactus, orange trees,

oleanders, uncles, aunts, red roses

then she nods off,

dreams of her childhood

the plants sing their dream of eternal spring:

soil, rain and sun

En silencio

La naturaleza ama el ocultarse.

— Heráclito

Eran los libros asilados

en tus brazos

Tus manos

cuestionando muros

Tu boca

desvelando palabras

Tus ojos cafés diluyéndose agua

en las conversaciones…

Días espejos caían

besos en las esquinas

colores primitivos en los labios

Nombrar pausadamente

sin miedo

la angustia a ser

un ser sin rumbo

Sin susto a fallecer de risa

Morder tranquilidad

In Silence translation by Laura Jáuregui Murueta

Nature loves hiding.

— Heraclitus

The books were asylees

in your arms

Your hands

questioning walls

Your mouth

unveiling words

Your brown eyes turning into water

in conversations...

The falling of mirror days

The kisses in street corners

primitive colors on lips

Naming slowly

without fear

the anguish to be an aimless being

Without the fear of dying of laughter

Biting tranquility

on turns of fate

and muttering questions to the night

unhinging songs till dawn

What does the loneliness of constellations know?

What does our night know about the pain

embedded in his light?

Why is there so much sadness in tenderness?

Why is love

love not infinite?

¿A quiénes les importan las palabras

estancadas en una tubería con dos

centímetros de diámetro?

El silencio hueco,

diferente al misterioso,

tiene problemas de fontanería;

es el silencio incómodo,

es el silencio desagradable.

Y cuando las palabras

brotan

con su aroma a caño

incomodan

tanto al que las escucha

como al que las guardaba.

El silencio hueco

es el silencio cacofónico,

aquel que pega sus ventosas

a las cuerdas vocales,

y lo único que queda

es el sonido malformado

de una idea estúpida.

Porque las palabras

sólo son bien recibidas

cuando te dan permiso

cuando levantas la mano

cuando tienes la autoridad

Who cares about the stagnant words

in a pipe with two centimeters in diameter? translation by Sandra González

The hollow silence,

different from the mysterious one,

it has plumbing problems;

it is the uncomfortable silence,

the disgusting silence,

and when the words arise

with an unpleasant sewer scent,

they annoy the one who is listening

as much as the one who was keeping

them inside.

The hollow silence

is the cacophonous silence,

the one that sticks their

suction cups to the vocal cords,

and the only thing left is the malformed

sound of a stupid idea.

Because words are only welcomed

when you are allowed to talk,

when you raise your hand,

when you have the authority to do it.

Otherwise, you‘ll be singled out.

You´ll be discredited, segregated for

having impregnated everything with a fetid odor.

predecibles senderos y lazos fortuitos.

Café Zurich translation by Johnny Payne

Yesterday words served to frame the conversation. It was the

stroke of our prosody eating away at the mural of others‘

chats.

Today, quiet. We fell silent and the rest are mute, like a fish

without a school, in the dark corner of errands.

Divided by hurdles of dreams, each has said farewell to

somebody, takes stock, or returns to confess to the ghost of

conscience.

Strangeness of the step of the passerby‘s racket. Out of an

atmosphere pregnant with luminous sounds, to cubes of

shadow in the breach.

Trotting past the orbits of this workaday trip, we hasten the

stations of the Commedia by way of a grove of predictable

paths and fortunate crossings.

From the plaza to the suite, from the platform to the room,

from the office to the sauna, the symphony of noise ceases

little by little in a display of death.

We can‘t say, by any means, that all is loss. The last sentry of

hell calls to the peak of purgatory. ―At the back, fellow, is the

exit.‖

So, as soon as we open the door of the room, saturated with

world, we‘re dazzled by a hive of calm, with solitude breaking

dawn.

The Rain Has Come

translation by Corinne Stanley I love the rain

when it kisses the earth

and plants its aroma

— Luis Gabriel Vázquez Castillo

It‘s here.

The nigrescent vision in the distance

has arrived.

Booming in the highlands,

breaking the air

of a child howling in a hammock;

the no-light,

the drowned shout after the first clap of thunder.

My grandma reaches for a sheet

to cover her head.

She stares hard at the lightning

and it runs from the house;

eyes shut, she prays

short recitations that escape

between her scattered teeth

and the rain comes.

The hills melt,

the Gran Sierra bleeds

and spreads to the outskirts

racing to reach

the city riverbed.

Why then flee from the rain

if it inserts life

into the belly of the land?

Faces in the trees make

a shadowy cross

when the wind breaks

the countenance of night.

Today the Sierra sleeps

with green branches, plantlets

entwine in an embrace

lasting until dawn

Rezagado de los ochentas:

con bototos, jeans arremangados, poleras marineras;

Of-Clear 4 translation by Alejandra Coz Rosenfeld

Lagging the eighties:

with buttons, rolled-up jeans, seamstress t-shirts;

hair garzon cut more quiff and sophisticated thinness.

Ran through the city between the International garage

and the Nona jazz,

the urban studio and art actions over the street

of the old neighborhood.

The other side of Santiago, the intimate daily film:

the Opalas, the buses before they were yellow,

the intercommunal,

Cumming with Alameda, the tear gas, the birdshots,

the youth agitated in the Alameda. A bomb in Villa Portales,

Quinteros, on the way to the airport, Bulnes and the madness

of the criminals in power.

Run the last years of the eighties.

He still has the same workshop, sometimes paints, plays

music in clubs,

continues with his readings of Lihn, Lira and the off-saider

poets of the 21st century.

It is the icon of cultural resistance, a worthy and worthy

laggard of the eighties.

A little paunchy for whiskey and beer.

Friend of the bookseller, of the bartender,

of the partner now turned state criminal,

of the cults and amnesiac intellectuals,

of the square dealer, the hairdresser and the homeless of

polished shoes and yellow moustache

by the tar.

Legitimate son of an impertinent generation,

wise passenger of uncomfortable class,

that when it bursts into melancholy,

it looks for the plush trousers,

the same one he dressed for the first punk recital

in Plaza Brasil.

Patio de atrás

I‟d rather not go back to the old house

(Back to the old house — Morrisey)

Backyard translation by Kimrey Anna Batts

I‟d rather not go back to the old house

(Back to the old house — Morrisey)

The backyard of my old house is gray.

It is an ash that wants to be flame

but fails to be anything more than dust.

In the backyard of my old house is a tree

that is, in fact, a seed. I myself am

the embryo. I shall eat my own tongue

to make myself more worthy, more pure.

The voice will return to my fingers and oblivion

will be the present. Memory is a lie

that I prefer to remember. I will not dynamite

the edges of the house. I will not hide in the basement.

Now there is no house. Now there is no basement.

I will mock my infant-pubescent face.

I will shed skin on the lifeless geraniums.

I will gnaw the bones I keep behind the nettle.

I will plant a cactus that will die without being born.

I will harvest scarecrows that attract ravens.

I will be the raven.

I will raise myself. I will tear out my eyes.

I will pour rat poison on my pupils to

be blind again, less child, more docile.

―I will go back to the old house,‖ I repeat to myself.

The days pass by and my house does not exist.

The days weigh heavy and my house does not exist.

I write and my house exists.

I read and my house exists.

The one remaining certainty is that

this succeeds only in demolishing it for good.

Comunidad transfronteriza

1

Cross-border community translation by Laura Gabriela Bautista Martínez.

1

In a certain way we all desire to jump: the sidewalk at least, or

the dogmas that emasculate the seeming development of

human beings (in Guatemala a Mayan scientist was burned

because opposing ideas set the borders on fire). Some people

from the southern part of Mexico wish to arrive to this point.

Over a sleepless night I saw a migrant caravan crossing my

bed up to the edge: I asked them where they were going and

found out that they were looking for the refrigerator.

2

There are people who go through ignorance by means of used

books and as they reach the edge of the land of the stripes and

stars they yell: ―I am Cuban, do not shoot‖, and they are

hugged, they are read out loud and baptized with dollars so

that they forget the other books in the old shelf and learn to

spit them out, rather than to miss them. They teach them to

love and judge them secretly because border love is

contradictory when two nations remain at war. The only clear

thing is the statistics of the main migrant expelling countries.

Y, ¡ah!

The perfect balance translation by the author

In Basel a drink was cooked

A simple and sweet drink,

elegant and classic,

enjoyed by friends and strangers

that contains the code of life.

A drink worthy of the gods,

that in succession of infinite sums of proofs,

converges to the taste, of the infinite passionate ones.

It is also a delicacy, small,

that deforms into tight contours,

tiny, but infinite in density,

however it converges.

It contains the elixir of analysis,

the perfume of geometry,

the heart of the most wonderful invention

of the nineteenth century.

And, ah!

without forgetting the powerful,

neutral beings of the digital flow.

Eating crab is an art translation by the author

Ten pesos per bag I have six gimme fifty

so you enjoy all of „em

the bicycle is tired of walking over the roads

from here to the shrimp banks to see if there is something to

catch

and the machine is roasted all in one piece

still

but the sea the sun the salty wind

so tricky

splash the curtain beside the wave and the crabtramp

once full of fish becomes a god‘s dish

to carnivorous crabs

eating the whole corpse without puking

within his eyes you could see his work and shrimps

per kilo and underpaying enthusiasm to keep pedaling

Excuse me, are them blue… your eyes

I donnou, can‟t see‟em

and cracking and cracking

peso by peso

he takes forty-eight

his eyes wore a wedding dress like a crab‘s flesh

like a sea departing from the shore day by day

and cracking and the buzzing invader flies

and off to the salt marsh with only hooks

all in his cryless sweeting eyes

foaming just like crabs

Me reconozco

en un paraje de agua salada

donde bebo agua dulce.

Veo mi cuerpo abrirse

entre el cielo y la tierra.

Flotar en un sueño,

aferrarse

a la dimensión de la ciudad,

a la condición del cielo, donde

―Hay una pena de pájaros volando.‖

The shine of the night translation by Julie Brossy

I was here

but in an act of magic I am no longer.

I was here,

I was wating for the body

to return to itself.

I was waiting for cells

to reproduce indefinitely.

Those small rooms

Filled with God‘s will.

Those molecular routes shaken by thought.

Battles waged in silence,

without the clanging of swords.

Only the intense shine of the night

raining on the dead.

I recognize myself

in a place with salty water

where I drink fresh water.

I see my body open up

between the earth and the sky.

Floating in a dream,

attached

to the dimension of the city,

to the condition of the sky, where

―There is the sorrow of birds flying.‖

Radio de onda corta

A oscuras mi padre sintonizaba la radio:

una pelea de box en japonés,

la crónica de un atentado en italiano

o la caída de un avión en ruso.

Aunque los periódicos al día siguiente

desmintieran sus versiones, él se entendía

con la frecuencia y la estática.

Fiel receptor de hechos incomprendidos

a lo largo del cuadrante, insomne

en las ondas de alguna estación.

Mientras, junto a él, mi madre

soñaba encontrar un interlocutor.

Short Wave Radio translation by Ignacio Madrazo Piña

In the dark my father tuned in the radio:

a boxing match in Japanese,

the chronicle of an assassination attempt in Italian,

or the fall of a plane in Russian.

Even though the next day the newspapers

would contradict his versions, he had his understanding

with the frequency and the static.

Faithful receiver of misunderstood events

along the dial, insomniac

in the wavelengths of a certain station.

Meanwhile, next to him, my mother

dreamed about finding someone to talk to.

Torpe gacela la palabra muerte

a mi padre, Francisco Vizcaíno

Ungainly gazelle, the word death translation by Kimrey Anna Batts

to my father, Francisco Vizcaíno

your silence is terrifying.

ocean or wind crazed by the barren music.

if you had said: I will take the night / it will turn to dust.

but the message said: papa has died, papa has died.

it was the violent pain of rupture,

the lightning bolt embedded in my skull,

the cruel gunpowder exploding in my memory.

you did not say: I will go to feel the air,

to dance along the brink.

your territory is no longer mine / your body is lava.

what I now have is the shadow‘s chill,

what I now have is the day‘s quivering.

if you had said: lend me your hand,

for mine will be buried.

and yet, I hear you.

your laughter a wasp in my chest.

two things have meaning:

the never-imagined peace upon your face

and the brilliance in the wake of your passing.

ungainly gazelle, the word death.

muddled the gaze of the unexpected chasm.

if you had said: I am going to settle in the sand,

to irrigate your tears.

tremble, impossible,

god, tremble!,

do not separate the father voice from the son voice.

grant me your terrifying silence so that I may shatter it into a

million pieces.

Declaración de fe

Me declaro a favor

de los amores que se vuelven rutina:

esos que suelen suscitarse

entre quienes comen juntos

tres veces al día;

duermen tomados de la mano

y despiertan siempre

a la misma hora

y en la misma cama.

Es decir,

me declaro a favor

de esos amantes

que juegan a besarse

como si untaran mantequilla

en un pan de centeno;

y se aman día a día

-noche a noche-

con las mismas tristísimas

y ridículas frases;

pronunciadas de tal forma

que parecen destilar por todo el cuerpo

la miel de una colmena entera.

Declaration of faith translation by Lourdes Arenas Mazo

I declare myself in favor

of loves that turn routine:

the kind that arise

between those eating together

three meals a day;

sleep hand in hand

and awaking always

at the same hour

and in the same bed.

That is to say,

I declare myself in favor

of those lovers

who play kissing

as if they spread butter

on a rye bread;

and love each other day by day

-night by night-

with the same sad

and ridiculous phrases;

pronounced in such a way

that they seem to exude by the whole body

the honey of a whole hive.
