He announced the end of his playing career in July 2009. A former member of the Russian national team in 2004 -2005, its captain. From 2009 to 2011 he is a member of the 5th convocation Altai Territory Legislative Assembly. Alexei graduated Dynamo Barnaul football school. He played for the clubs: Dinamo Barnaul (1992-1993), Dawn Leninsk-(1994-1997), the Urals, Elista (1997-1998), Lokomotiv Moscow (1999-2000). Alexey joined the French club Bordeaux in 2000, where he spent three full seasons. He stands for the London Chelsea in 2004-2005.

2005-2006 season began in London charltone. On 10 March 2006 he signed a four-year contract with FC Dinamo Moscow. Alexei Smertin returned to the English Premier League in early 2007. Alexei made his debut in the national team of Russia in October 1998. He became the captain of the Russian football team in August 21st, 2002. He is a member of the World Cup 2002 and European championship 2004. In the national team of Russia he participated in 55 matches.

Alexei Smertin is one of the founders of SDUSHOR named after him in Barnaul, where 650 young football players have trainings; as well as the founder of the charity fund "Young Talents", which takes care of the young athletes and artists.

On September 7, 2007 Alexei Smertin was given the title of "Honorable Citizen of Barnaul".

On March 1, 2009 Alex was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Altai Region in single-member districts in Barnaul.

Alexei Smertin sometimes comments matches of the Russian national football team and the championship games. His made his debut as announcer on September 12, 2007 during the England-Russia match (3-0).
