A ARTE DO ENCONTRO
O verdadeiro mundo é arte.
A arte é o desconhecido. Ela sussurra nossa pertença ao ser,
celebra a vida.
funciona o Galpão Busca Vida, ambos no bairro da Serrinha,
convidando-a a experimentar.
forma análoga, acontecendo no campo,
retirado da correria da vida na cidade,
o festival proporciona uma pausa na
rotina contemporânea – um silêncio
criativo – e um mergulho em busca de
valores essenciais. Sem interferências, sem
perturbações, a Serrinha abre-se para a
criação.
Trata-se de um laboratório aberto a
experiências artísticas que têm na natureza
a matéria principal, uma obra em contínuo
processo de construção – nas oficinas, nos
debates, nos encontros informais, nos
períodos de residência artística –, em que
se estimulam a produção e as múltiplas
possibilidades de interação entre as artes, e
delas com a paisagem.
Transforma-se o espaço, mudam as
pessoas – e o mundo. Em uma década de
festival, o alcance físico parece pequeno,
mas o eco é profundo. As gotas borrifadas

teoria e a prática.
arte contemporânea, nesse contexto, parecia oportuno abordar

ENQUADRANDO A PAISAGEMLUIZ HERMANO
O espírito do lugar sugeriu

O BAILADO DO DEUS MORTOJOSÉ CELSO MARTINEZ CORRÊA
do século XX.
O ambiente rural também trouxe à memória do diretor do
O bailado
Raquel Coutinho.

artístico: Spiral Jetty (1970), do norte-americano Robert
Smithson.
fortuna do vento.

FÉRTILFERNANDO LIMBERGER
Três trabalhos individuais compõem a instalação Fértil (2003),
do artista e paisagista Fernando Limberger.
decorrer do tempo?
As cores,

(I)MOBILIÁRIOGUSTAVO GODOY
Gustavo Godoy a criar (I)mobiliário (2007 / 08), instalação em

-alpinista Peetssa.
do entorno.

queimadas e outras marcas do tempo.

Partindo dessa asserção provocativa, o estilista Ronaldo Fraga
As roupas, assim, ganharam novas configurações e

renega a formatação convencional.
as artes visuais e a arquitetura. O papel de protagonista é do
músico Carlos Careqa. Ele interpreta Baal, poeta e compositor
Caricatural, indócil e extravagante, Baal evidencia o vazio
que impera no mundo contemporâneo, no qual o pensar e o
agir encontram-se anestesiados pela mesmice. À arte cabe a
transcendência e a resistência.

Bonfanti, Eliana Monteiro e Sergio Siviero, o grupo repassou as
retomados.

A encenação partiu
A neutralidade do branco deu

CAOSFABIO DELDUQUE E HAROLDO ALVES
–, encontrando

As instalações constituem
do entorno.
assemelham a organismos vivos. Algumas são permanentes;

rural.

tenacidade do artista Fabio Delduque.
e interativo.
causar espanto – e alegria.
Dentre as muitas experiências coletivas propostas durante o
metas: ocupar, organizar, preservar, conviver,
transformar, sobrepor, catalogar e permanecer.
natureza. O festival propõe, subliminarmente,
novas, delicadas e positivas formas de lidar
com as diferenças e com nós mesmos.
A Serrinha me possibilitou as mais profundas
experiências de troca com participantes de
oficinas que facilitei, e também riquíssimas

ENGLISH VERSION
p. 16THE ART OF ENCOUNTER
the real world is art. Art is the unknown. it whispers our privilege at existing, celebrates life. thus art wants to be lived: as something that never, ever ends.
but it does end. And we are left with the problem of knowing how to live when art dies.
Like a sprinkler, the festival de Arte Serrinha has equationed the question of life after the death of art by showering art on everything in life.
the festival was born out of the restlessness regarding the future course of a region that endures in an accelerated and disorganized process of transformation; out of the motivation to reconstitute natural space and strengthen relations between people and the environment. And with all this done, to produce positive reverberations – regardless of the scale.
the radial nucleus of all the events is divided between two properties, fazenda Serrinha and Sítio Santo Antônio, home to galpão busca Vida, both in the neighborhood of Serrinha, located in the rural zone of bragança paulista, São paulo. every year for one month in winter – a period when nature withdraws, preparing for rebirth – these two neighbors and brothers embrace, welcome and enlighten all those who come to visit, inviting them to experiment.
Just like seeds that come and go, carried by the wind and animals, or deliberately spread by man, which, on taking root, participate in the recreation of the world, art in Serrinha, in all its expressions, is incubated and processed, returning in the form of new, lovely harmonies.
A devastated forest will only return to its original condition of abundance if the land it once occupied is left undisturbed. in an analogous way, in the countryside, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the festival offers a pause in our accelerated contemporary routine – a creative silence – and an immersion into a search for essential values. With no interferences or disturbances, Serrinha opens itself up to creation.
it is an open laboratory for artistic experiences that have in nature its raw material, a work in continuous process of construction – in the workshops, debates, informal get-togethers, artistic residences – stimulating production and the many possibilities of interaction between the arts, and between these and the landscape.
Space is transformed, people change – and the world, too. in a decade of festivals, the physical achievement seems small, but the echoes are profound. the droplets sprinkled by Serrinha evaporate and come back as condensation, renewing our relief each day. here one discovers what is clear, though not unsurprising: life is art.
p. 18UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE MEDIUMrafael Vogt maia rosa, 2006
it was in the preface to his book Silence, in 1961, that John cage mentioned the difference between talking about something and demonstrating this something while talking – a pressing issue at a moment when the composer proposed dissolving the barriers between theory and practice. the idea might sound a little out of date, but it is my departure point to give a brief statement about the festival de Arte Serrinha, in which i have always participated as a speaker.
the workshop process, without doubt the foundation of the event, establishes itself through work in various areas, such as theater, photography, music, cinema and painting, among others. in relation to those that i followed more closely, there was a clear transformation in practice through the influence of factors related to the circumstances of the festival, such as the place, the people involved, their production, the activities related to other languages, the time itself during which all this was played out. On proposing, therefore, to talk about contemporary art in this context it seemed opportune to say something about the survival of the specifics of a medium of artistic expression when the surroundings conspire against any critical distancing, because of something that talks very loud or simply louder: experience. in other words, i saw in these talks the opportunity to try to verbally surround this bordering territory which would be, after all, the place common to all involved.
The justification for the possibility of what I would be stating with no knowledge of the cause or without elements for a demonstration of the problem was that i was also, on all these occasions, experiencing frontier space, but from the other side, on the margins of practice and somewhat envious at not painting, for example. As to the specifics of the medium I was using, on thinking of questions about contemporary art, in Serrinha it was summed up for me by the inescapable gap between the
experience of recalling and describing the performance of Joseph Beuys confined in a gallery with the coyote and going to view the rural landscape from the top of a hill, fortuitously accompanied by a dog appeared out of nowhere.
p. 20ENQUADRANDO A PAISAGEM [FRAMING THE LANDSCAPE]Luiz hermano
many years before the festival existed, visual artist Luiz hermano had already experienced fazenda Serrinha’s potential as a creation space. the local spirit suggested to hermano the construction of a kind of landscape laboratory, a workshop with students, held in 2004. An installation appeared during the process, comprising rectangular wooden frames, similar to posts, and a bridge connecting the ground to the infinity of an abyss.
throughout several years of existence, subject to the whims of nature, the work has undergone modifications that point to the ephemeral character of the material. During the workshop, disposable materials – such as tires, glass bottles and wire – filled the empty spaces in the frames, but in the time that followed the completion of the work, the artist carried out a process of purification, giving back to the work that potentiality for the new which empty space possesses.
Stripped of any specific functionality, the installation opened itself up to creativity and to a dialogue with other manifestations of art. Among the countless forms of interaction and occupation, Framing the Landscape, has already served as the “stage” for The Dance of the Dead God, directed by José Celso Martinez Corrêa.
p. 26BAILADO DO DEUS MORTO [THE DANCE OF THE DEAD GOD]José Celso Martinez Corrêa
When visiting Serrinha, José Celso Martinez Corrêa noticed affinities with Fazenda Capuava, in Valinhos, where artist Flávio de carvalho built the modernist house that functioned as a space for artistic experimentation during the first half of the 20th century.
the rural environment also brought to the mind of the director of the Teatro Oficina the play conceived by Flávio de Carvalho, The Dance of the Dead God, which tells of the animal and mythical origins of god and the alleged betrayal that is supposed to have turned him into a man – in 1933, the play opened in the teatro da Experiência, but was closed by the police soon after the first night, due to excessive radicality.
in 2004, José celso proposed a workshop that would work on the text, recreating this great ritual performance in the fields of Serrinha. fabio Delduque was in charge of the art direction, while costumes where created by Sônia ushiyama and soundtrack by raquel coutinho. the performance of The Dance of the Dead God would be repeated, in a new version, entitled Experiência Flávio de Carvalho nº 6, during the 29th São paulo biennial (2010).

Great Spiral (2004), conceived by bené fonteles and constructed during a workshop with students, has proportions and features that bring it close to the great works of land art – in particular to a landmark in this artistic movement: Spiral Jetty
(1970), by American artist robert Smithson.for bené – who brings together in his works elements
from visual arts, music and literature and carries with him the knowledge of the earth that living in seven brazilian states has provided – Great Spiral, besides being a work of art, is a place for communing with, meditating and reflecting on and interacting with the landscape in the Serrinha region.
composed of 16,000 bricks from local brickworks, the spiral houses small gardens of ornamental plants and aromatic herbs in its interior.
A 12-meter eucalyptus mast was erected in the center of the work for the banner of peace – a symbol created by russian artist nicholas röerich to signal the neutral status of museums, schools and cultural landmarks during World War i – which is hoisted in a ritual around a bonfire, with music and dancing, and is then left to the whim of the wind.
p. 40FÉRTIL [FERTILE]fernando Limberger
three individual works make up the installation Fertile (2003), by artist and landscape designer fernando Limberger. the work sprang from an investigation into the history of Serrinha, and began with this question: how has the farm space been occupied over time?
Over four generations in succession, coffee cultivation, dairy farming, eucalyptus plantations, the extraction of clay for local brickworks and environmental conservation have been the main activities at fazenda Serrinha. At the beginning of the current cycle, in which the farm is being gradually turned into an ecological reserve, a vivarium of forest species seedlings was created with a view to restoring Atlantic forest vegetation in deforested areas. Some lands affected by erosion have been fenced in to keep cattle and horses at bay, resulting in “islands” in the middle of pastureland, allowing the eroded areas to “heal”, and the native vegetation to develop fully.
Incorporating the concept of “islands” and entering into a playful dialogue with the historical process and with natural scenarios, the artist installed brightly colored enclosures in strategic points around the farm, boxing them in with the typical fences used in the region. The colors, obviously artificial, contrast with the surroundings in which they were placed, functioning as signs throughout the landscape.
in 2003, the year the work was assembled, Fertile also incorporated a mosaic of small individual pieces that made up a temporary installation in the vivarium and the kitchen garden.
p. 48MULA SEM CABEÇA [HEADLESS MULE]bijari
the installation Headless Mule took as its conceptual base the series of attacks by an outlaw militia, the pcc (acronym for the first capital command, in portuguese), on public institutions, banks and mainly military police stations. these began on may 12th, 2006 in the city of São paulo – just a little before the festival of that same year.
The idea of the element of fire as a symbol of conflict was interpreted by members of the bijari collective as an evocation of the folklore legend of the headless mule – according to which every woman who has amorous thoughts or relations toward a priest is transformed into a scary beast.

installed in the natural environment of fazenda Serrinha, the figure – which emits tongues of flame where the head should be, and which represents the lack of reason – was perfectly associated to the idea of building in that place a work whose purpose was to unveil the latent social conflicts behind the attacks held that year in São paulo.
Signs announcing the distance to the work showed, among others, images of buses, money and hearts being burned, leading visitors through the farm’s bucolic landscape, in an intriguing counterpoint – a type of “political ecotourism”.
p. 54(I)MOBILIÁRIO [(IM)MOBILE]gustavo godoy
fazenda Serrinha’s process of reforestation inspired gustavo godoy to create (I)mobiliário (2007/08), an installation in which domestic chairs and stools function as extensions to the eucalyptus branches they are attached to – as if they were leaves or fruit
After being cut down, the eucalyptus branches were left to dry, removed from their original geographical location and fixed in a flat area of pastureland.
for gustavo, the installation has the dead trees returning symbolically to their condition when alive, repopulating the deforested surroundings. they are, as the artist explains, immobile furniture and mobile trees. the replanted tree skeletons seem to scream so that reforestation can advance in that arid, unprotected, sun-bleached area.
the reutilization of materials also attempts to rescue man’s own existence through discarded waste and the superimposition of meanings by the association of objects and images, proposing the spectator reflects on his/her own condition.
p. 60CASA NA ÁRVORE [TREE HOUSE]floriana breyer
Artist and environmental activist floriana breyer built her Tree House (2007) in an atypically leafy eucalyptus tree. in the various stages between conception and execution, elements of artistic installation, tree rappelling, building technique experimentation and performance mixed together. engineer-climber peetsa took part in the assembly.
When ready, the space became a lookout point for contemplative silence, a platform to commune, breathe and rest, offering an original point of view of the surrounding nature.
for the artist, contemporary man, conditioned to a utilitarian relationship with the environment, of which he no longer sees himself as part, creates a fragmented world, where contemplation and nature are kept at a distance from his body.
As a counterpoint, with Tree House, floriana widens the possibilities of experiencing space and suggests new ways for the body to inhabit it, providing a taste of intimate contact with nature. During the month of July 2007, the artist made this tree house her home.

natural light – a fundamental element in the history of painting
– and its various effects are worked on by Lucia Koch in Purple Rain (2009), a temporary chromatic installation composed of an eucalyptus structure partially covered by a film of violet PVC, built on a section of sloping pastureland on the farm.
On entering the space, the visitor was able experience the world through an altered color scale, in an environment in constant mutation, oscillating throughout the day according to atmospheric conditions. At certain times, for example, the color purple simulated the effect of black light inside the small construction, while altering perception of the surrounding landscape.
p. 72DESIGN NATURAL [NATURAL DESIGN] hugo frança
the designer hugo frança brought to Serrinha a process similar to what he has been developing for almost two decades in the Atlantic forest of southern bahia: the creation of objects – utilitarian or not – using tree debris found on trips through the forest. in two years of workshops, he has incorporated into the farm a series of works and furniture, the product of work with students.
respecting the forms, curves, and original textures of the wood, the artist incorporates into the project holes, cracks, burn marks and others made by time. The final form is a blend of original expressivity of raw material with a human action.
Although the result is, in general, objects of practical use, hugo seeks to provide an experience of approximation with nature. his work method begins with the tree and, in a certain way, ends there too, by incorporating its marks in a cyclical motion that moves in a natural rhythm.

With this provocative assertion as a starting point, fashion designer ronaldo fraga distributed samples of his 2005/06 summer collection – Deconstructing nilza , a homage to his oldest dressmaker– among the participants in his workshop on the farm so that each one could rework them in their own personal way. the clothes thus gained new configurations and meanings and began to accumulate a multiplicity of experiences, translated into the sewing, colors and embroidery.
in a collaborative process with video artist Lucas bambozzi, the workshop students had their faces filmed in close up, while they reminisced about their lives. The final result was a show, in which their testimonies were projected onto the clothes, each item of which, in their turn, the students had imprinted with their work developed over a period of shared experience and reflection.
p. 84NATURE’S JEWELSelisa Stecca
Out in landscape, cataloguing the farm’s natural elements, such as stones, branches, and leaves, designer elisa Stecca proposed an immersion in a process of collaborative construction, in which
she sought to mix materials she came across with objects made of metal glass, plastic and other industrialized materials.
the workshop that took place in 2006 focused the whole time on the tenuous and often blurred line between the artisanal, the decorative and the artistic – a boundary that elisa has always kept in sight throughout her professional career.
painstakingly held together, the created objects were inserted into the landscape in a harmonious way, constituting a relationship of symbiosis between human invention and the spontaneity of Serrinha’s gardens. thus, the result of the workshop was jewels that function somehow as amulets, in which one can find the ephemeral character of fashion and the eternal character of creation, directing students towards pleasurably compulsive creation, motivated by the power of execution.
p. 88CANÇÃO DE BAAL [BAAL’S SONG]helena ignez
Initially conceived as a short film, to be made during the cinema workshop of 2006, Baal’s Song, by director and actress helena ignez, gained impetus and entered the atmosphere of the festival, resulting in a full-length feature film. It was entirely shot in Serrinha over two months.
The work is a free adaptation of the first play written by Bertolt brecht, the german dramatist who has inspired helena’s entire career. This “guerrilla film”, as it has been classified, eschews conventional format. it is a cinematographic experiment, which opens up a dialogue between theater, music, the visual arts and architecture. the role of protagonist is played by carlos careqa. he interprets poet and composer baal, who rejects the banality of everyday life and despises institutionalized society, giving himself up to a Dionysian, orgiastic life. the cast also includes beth goulart, Djin Sganzerla and Simone Spoladore, among others.
caricatural, irreverent and extravagant, baal witnesses the emptiness that reigns in the contemporary world, in which thought and action are anaesthetized by sameness. it falls to art to offer transcendence and resistance.
Baal’s Song has already been screened at various cinematic events throughout the world, including Le Marché du Film, a film event that takes place alongside the cannes festival, in france; the trieste film festival, italy; and the midnight movies section of the festival do rio. it received the critic’s Award and prize for best Art Direction for fabio Delduque, at the 37th festival de cinema de gramado (2009).

dramatic element in teatro da Vertigem productions, and this was utilized to the full in Serrinha’s inspiring gardens.
the week of intense shared experience, including a night’s vigil, resulted in a presentation that added other artistic languages, in which the bodies of the actors performed against a mixed scenario of natural landscape, artificial lighting and video projection.

using the reading of several texts and the development of a series of exercises as a departure point, students attending the workshop given by theater director guilherme Leme in 2006 initiated an intense process of creation which resulted in Fragments of a Loving Rehearsal.
costume designer Sônia ushiyama and choreographer tatiana guimarães collaborated to the drama, which was staged, incorporating elements from the visual arts suggested by the environment, in Serrinha’s spacious main studio,
which generally hosts activities connected to painting and drawing. the performance began with the actors in total silence, wearing white costumes in an equally white set.
the drama gradually took on a cathartic air and the characters began to fill the silence with words – spoken, written or drawn. the neutrality of white gave way to the power of red as inertia and absence were filled with the warmth of a lover’s discourse.
p. 104 CAOS [CHAOS]fabio Delduque and haroldo Alves
A mixture of installation, performance and theater, Chaos is a work in progress, conceived over a decade by fabio Delduque and haroldo Alves. in the period from 1993 to 2003, it occupied several unusual spaces, from neighborhood theaters to a brickyard, finding fertile space for its development in the festival.
the performance shows a man being born out of clay entrails – the genesis of man? – then ascending through purification in water. the creators utilized Delduque’s experience in the visual arts and that of Alves in Butoh and Afro dance, also benefiting from collaboration with director guilherme Linhares.
besides clay, the work has incorporated, in its many versions, materials of different natures, such as discarded wood, cans and construction materials, arranged in chaotic order, like the supposed confusion of the world before creation (kháos).

in three years of coordinating experiences, between comings and goings along Serrinha’s tracks and trails artist and photographer caio reisewitz produced a small photographic essay in which he clearly shows his creative method, in constant search of silence, which materializes in carefully studied compositions. Although rigor is not an element of reisewitz’s work with his students, the conception of images is an integral part of the friendly daily routine in the workshops, where participants were encouraged to delve deep inside themselves.

these images reveal a region with no intention of documenting, but with the intensity of a tender, contemplative eye mixed with acid, good-humored political criticism.
p. 114INSTALLATION PARK
Since restoration of the Atlantic forest, biodiversity and natural processes began on fazenda Serrinha, each human intervention carried out there has been thought over, planned and executed starting from the premise that its result should produce the minimum impact on the environment, or preferably be beneficial to it.
through the farm’s very vocation – frequented by artists and used as a production space long before the existence of the festival – the installation park, in a constant movement of creation and re-creation, has been an intrinsic artistic component of this process. The installations are the “footprints” left by these artists, who strengthened the recuperation of the natural environments on giving them a new meaning and experiencing them in a harmonious, free way.
As far as purely artistic components are concerned, one aspect that merits special mention, because it signals the contemporaneity of this production, is the space it occupies. Linked to a tradition that began in the 1960s, the works do not fit into the neutral spaces of museums and art galleries – the so-called white cubes – but demand new occupation possibilities.
they are works that widen the forms of aesthetic reception and open themselves up to multiple relationships of interaction not only with people, but also with all the surrounding animal and vegetable species. Works constructed specifically for those spaces (site specific art), they have a dynamic, living character, incorporating the action of time in their constitution, which makes them resemble living organisms. Some are permanent; others disappear, at the mercy of the weather.
besides those presented in the book, works by carlos fajardo, Virgínia de medeiros, Dudu tsuda, humberto brasil, eduardo Srur and rochelle costi can, or not (since some are still at the project phase), surprise the visitor who strolls around the farm.
p. 128STUDIOSprocesses
from the boteggas of renaissance florence, where painting and sculpture were taught, to the so-called media lab, home to research on art and technology, the history of art tells us of the various spaces destined for artistic creation that suit the specifics of techniques and languages.
At fazenda Serrinha, some spaces have been constructed and some have been adapted – the latter previously served, for example, as milking parlors or storage space for coffee – becoming hybrid areas suited to the development of the diverse forms of art that the contemporary world allows to be created.
in addition to the process of artistic creation, this multifunctional character permits the use of workshops, talks, small musical presentations, and film and video screenings.
The spaces are versatile and gain new configurations and colors with each activity that takes place in them, functioning as veritable experimental laboratories.
the festive atmosphere that surrounds the festival makes the studios meeting points for artists, workshop participants and the members of the public who visit the farm.
p. 144BUSCA VIDAbrazilian music
Standing on the shores of the Jacareí river reservoir, the shed that used to be the milking parlor on Sítio Santo Antonio and that also served as accommodation for friends returning from nocturnal horse riding trips in the Serrinha region became in 1997 galpão busca Vida, a venue that stands out for its originality in transporting a bohemian atmosphere and good brazilian music to the rural environment. the décor has preserved elements of the farm, the milking parlor and the stables, also utilizing parts of theatrical sets, antiques and works of art, mixing all these elements with humor and elegance.
galpão busca Vida has become a cultural landmark in the São paulo countryside through bringing to its tiny stage such important artists from the brazilin music scene as Arnaldo Antunes, elba ramalho, mart’nália, moska, nação zumbi, céu, tom zé and zeca baleiro, as well as including a democratic element that gives equal space to young local musicians. besides holding exhibitions, auctions and diverse festivities, it is the center of the festival de Arte Serrinha’s music program.
there is a genuine local creation that is just as memorable as the eclectic program in such a unique place: the busca Vida drink. born here, based on a traditional recipe, the liquor’s mixes sugarcane rum, honey, lime and some secret ingredients. it is now nationally famous and is produced on an industrial scale, with distribution throughout brazil and abroad.
p. 154CINE RANCHObrazilian cinema screenings
cine rancho takes place before the festival and is held on a farm in the neighboring municipality of piracaia, screening national full-length feature films, followed by conversations with directors. the place is interesting: the projection room functions in an annex to a rural pizzeria; the floor is covered with eucalyptus leaves and charcoal braziers provide the heating. Sofas and hammocks serve as the seating. Anna muylaert, beto brant, guilherme de Almeida prado, André Klotzel, Lírio ferreira and cláudio Assis are some of the directors who have given accounts of their experiences in film making during informal conversations “by the screen”.
p. 158ART-EDUCATION NUCLEUSágua comprida and morro grande
from its early days, the festival de Arte Serrinha has held a program of free educational workshops for children and adolescents from água comprida, expanding in 2008 to morro grande – both rural communities near the Serrinha neighborhood.
given by a team of art-educators, the activities involve diverse artistic manifestations. there are also visits to the farm, so that the participants can have contact with the festival workshops and the resulting works, and also have the opportunity to get to know the process of environmental recovery in progress on the farm.
Visual arts, cinema, gastronomy, fashion, music and theater are some of the areas dealt with by the teachers and by festival guests, such as musician naná Vasconcelos, chef morena Leite and art teachers. According to the objectives of the group, the program is sometimes extended to the city of bragança paulista, and includes shows open to the public.
p. 166HAVEN OF CREATIVE UTOPIAbené fonteles, 2011
it was still in the 1980s that i got to know Serrinha at the invitation of friends fábio and marcelo Delduque. Already enchanted by the place, it was pure pleasure to take part, from the early days, in an art festival that invaded this lovely natural space so near yet so far from the madness of the state capital, São paulo.
besides my friendship with the producers, other points linked me to the event: i was born in pará, in the town of bragança, on the banks of the caetés river, and it is in another bragança, this time paulista, on the shores of a large reservoir, that the country’s most unconventional art festival is held, there to stay through the sheer obstinacy of a group of dreamer friends and, above all, the tenacity of artist fábio Delduque.
i had never taken part – in four decades of experience of cultural events – in such an informal, interactive festival. the mixture of diverse artistic languages happens with such interdisciplinarity and organicity as to actually cause amazement – and joy. in addition, there is a great, constant inspiring power that comes from the harmonious dialogue between human beings and a unique nature, which it is impossible to separate ourselves from.
the festival de Arte Serrinha proposes total immersion in the challenge to taste, with total freedom, nature as sensory experience; a nature that wants to stimulate the senses while educating the body and soul in a new relationship with the environment, and which encourages other perceptive ways of seeing and feeling the world of the unknown.
Among the many collective experiments proposed during the event, I would single out, because it exemplifies the spirit that reigns in Serrinha, the “invention of an island” workshop, in which rochelle costi and fernando Limberger give themselves the challenges of meeting the following objectives: occupying, organizing, preserving, experiencing, transforming, superimposing, cataloguing and remaining.
these are, essentially, the festival’s proposals as a whole. for almost a month, Serrinha turns into a territory of creative experiences, and much more than this, a widened field of humanistic conscience.
in Serrinha there is a search for a possible harmony with tough city life and the vicissitudes of contemporary living, ever more virtual and less virtuous. During the festival, we have time to pause and silence to understand and re-evaluate our way of dealing with the other, this unknown that also lives inside us.
this is suggested by the days of sharing and friendship, which are always open to the new, and the uniqueness of other activities taking place in nearby spaces – besides the surprise of unplanned happenings operated by nature. in a subliminal way, the festival proposes new, delicate, positive ways of dealing with differences and with ourselves.
Serrinha has provided me with the most profound experiences of exchange with participants in the workshops i gave, in addition to very rich sensory experiences in the physical contact with the environment that brothers fábio and marcelo; their wise parents, educators regina Delduque and marcos Silveira; and the Oliveira family – carlão, zezé, Davi and Leo – battle to preserve. there is a search for a balance between space, those who already inhabit it and those who visit on those unforgettable days of so many past Julys and those we dream of yet to come.
Over those fascinating and magical real dream days, a lot of people of high artistic and human quality pass through, always ready to illuminate life. people organize workshops and present shows, sharing talks or taking part in the many creative

According to the objectives of the group, the program is sometimes extended to the city of bragança paulista, and includes shows open to the public.

processes initiated by subversives and transgressors of customs and languages. And, incredible as it may seem, everything always happens within institutional order and progress. people circulate, chatting in bars and cafés, around so many bonfires on moonlit nights, or contemplating the infinite stars in the dark sky, only visible far from the big cities that surround Serrinha, making it an island, one of the last havens of utopia on earth.
