New BCM Hardware

The BCM450 also includes new hardware components to simplify expandability and connectivity including the modular: Capacity Expansion Card (CEC) that can be optionally added or more capacity.

It is pluggable into one o the three internal BFT slots. Chassis Interface Board (CIB) that connects the BFT to the chassis wiring,

allowing easy removal without having to manually disconnect the peripherals. Media Bay Modules (MBMs) that can improve expandability and connectivity. With BCM450, they can be plugged in using the DS256 connectors on the CIB.Like BCM400, BCM450 supports up to 10 MBMs.

Meet-Me Conferencing (MMC)

Integrated Meet-Me audio con erencing provides BCM50 and BCM450 users with a power ulcon erencing option that lets them hold larger con erences and enable more productive calls.

MMC supports multi-party con erencing, both unplanned (Ad-Hoc) or via a speci ed bridgenumber at an agreed-upon time (Meet-Me). A con erence chairperson can view who is on thecon erence bridge, selectively mute or disconnect participants, and lock the con erence. Con erenceparticipants can also view the list o parties on the call via the display on their phone, as well asselectively mute themselves.

MMC is secure. Each con erence bridge has a chairperson password. Con erences can be set upto require participants to provide a password or entry. Additionally, the chairperson has the ability to lock and unlock a con erence at any time.

Uni ed Messaging (UM) provides single-point, local or remote access to voice, ax and email messagesrom a multimedia PC. Plus, i ts easy to install and set up. UM helps SMBs be more productive by

Step 1: Making theFirst Step to IPDuring the installation phase, the BCM450 isintroduced to a legacy site, replacing the existingNorstar MICS. There is likely no interactionbetween the Norstar MICS and internal datanetworks or the Internet. Any activity between

desktop PCs and digital handsets will be mediatedby a Norstar Computer Telephony Adapter (CTA).Once the BCM450 is installed, there is no longer aneed or the Norstar CTA devices as the BCM isable to support many o the same CTI applicationsthrough its integrated LAN Computer Telephony Engine (CTE) application.

I on-site voice mobility exists within the legacy deployment, its sa e to assume that it is enabledby legacy Companion digital wireless sets and basestations. The BCM supports an integrated DigitalMobility solution, providing a dedicated, multi-cell

wireless voice network, as shown above.

Result: BCM450 has now replaced Norstar as thecall server. The customer has gained the ability tointegrate new, advanced applications, such as uni edmessaging, that let employees manage their voicemail,email and incoming axes directly rom their PCs,

without sacri cing their digital sets or trunks.

Step 2: Introduce IPon the Trunking SidePhase 2 introduces SIP-based IP trunks (H.323is also available), giving customers the optiono transitioning their network rom digital to IP.

Alternately, BCM450 enables customers to keeptheir TDM trunks (or a combination o TDM

and IP trunks) and migrate to IP desk sets withintheir business environment.

Since the LAN is now open to external networks(via the Internet), Nortel Secure Router (SR) 1004is introduced to ensure secure communicationsacross the IP network.

Additionally, the SR 1004 enables headquarters-to-branch o ce connectivity, resulting in highere ciency and, in the case o a geographically distant branch, lower costs.

Results: The customer gains branch o ceconnectivity that costs less and enables greaterproductivity than traditional PSTN connections.The customer can also run all BCM450 applications.Importantly, the customer can manage a phasedapproach to introducing IP at the desktop at apace thats appropriate or their business goals.Note: Nortel o ers a number o di erent solutions

Step 3: Enabling Accessfrom AnywhereThis phase introduces internal wireless network access and remote network access to mobileemployees.

Within the network, Nortel switches such as theBES1020 allow connectivity o the Business AccessPoint (BAP) 120-A with simpli ed wiring throughthe use o Power over Ethernet (PoE). For remote workers, laptops are equipped withVPN endpoint so tware to enable remote accessvia the IPSec protocol. A Nortel VPN Router 1750enables the secure VPN tunnel.
