What is TS of milk ?BR MeterPrinciple:It is operated on the general critical angle principle. The light from an LED light source is focused on the prism element.% TS = 0.9984 (% Brix) + 2.0775Total solids content is the entire residue left after complete evaporation of water from milk.An instrument used to calculate the total solids of milk is known as BR Meter.

Standard Operating Procedure10

Calibration: Clean the prism of instrument Press the ON/OFF key and release Place the meter in the direction of light Fill the sample well with distilled water Press the ZERO key

Precautions: Calibration should be performed daily, before measurements are made, when the battery has been replaced or between a long series of measurement If the ZERO sample is subjected to intense light such as sunlight or another strong source, cover the sample well with your hand or other shade during the calibration Use a soft tissue to gently absorb the water. Use care not to scratch the prism surface completely

Sample Measurement:

Verify the instrument is calibrated before taking measurements. Make sure that the prism and sample well are completely dry. Using a plastic pipette, drip sample onto the prism surface. Fill the well completely. Press the READ key. The results will be displayed. The last measurement value will be displayed until the next sample is measured or the instrument is turned off. Remove the sample from the sample well by absorbing on a soft tissue. Rinse prism and sample with distilled water. Wipe dry. The instrument is ready for the next sample.

Note:

Use Distilled Water

Benefits12 Safety Cheaper Time saving Water resistant No use of chemicals Direct TS calculation Easily carried anywhere Temperature compensation Small amount of sample required Can be used for Brix measurement

15 It shows average difference of 0.57

15 It shows average difference of 1.57

17 It shows average difference of 0.89

Results 18The results have a standard deviation of 0.8. This shows the failure for 70% of the sample analyzed .Conclusion The equipment is not reliable as proved by the experiments. The difference of value from the reference method is not consistent. It varies sample to sample and temperature to temperature of the surroundings.
