A revolutionin wood products

General interest in form and colour is growing, as isour desire to add a personal touch to the structureswe build. We dont want to spend all our time andresources on maintaining our house or cottage. Andour awareness of environmental and climate issues ison the increase.

Kebony has developed a method which gives architects,designers, construction clients and crafts-men a product that satisfies these needs:

contemporary and innovative solutions durability and minimum maintenance requirements environmentally friendly products

Kebony wood products can replace normal surface-treated white wood that require regular priming andpainting. They can replace impregnated timber andprecious wood from tropical rain forests. This is whyKebony is the wood for the future!

Kebony is a Norwegian company behind a worldwide sensation. Many years ofresearch and the will to think innovatively have yielded results.

What is kebonization?

Kebonization is a patented process in where the properties of the wood are enhanced. Thewood becomes harder and more stable, and itsdurability is improved. The liquid used in theprocess contains a bio-based substance whichforms a solid core inside the wood. The processinvolves the following four stages:

1. Ingredients are mixed according to a patented recipe.2. The liquid is applied under pressure permanent cell structure transformation.3. The wood is dried.4. The wood undergo a curing process at temperatures above 100C.

The process is close-looped and the liquidingredient is recycled during the productionprocess. The ingredient input is produced by usingagricultural waste from sugar cane production.

Kebonys patented modification methods are theresult of many years of research and developmentin Norway, Sweden and Canada. They are alsobased on collaborations with universities and insti-tutes in Germany, the Netherlands, USA and SouthAfrica, including the Norwegian Institute of WoodTechnology, the Norwegian Forest and LandscapeInstitute, the SP Technical Research Institute ofSweden, SHR Timber Research in the Netherlands,and the University of New Brunswick and Wood-tech in Canada.

Most of the light-coloured wood types we are familiarwith are suitable for kebonization. Currently, theprimary wood types we use are pine, beech, SouthernYellow Pine and ash.

We draw a distinction between partial kebonization (seepage 11) and deep kebonization. For example, ash andbeech sapwood are very suitable for deep kebonization,while some kebonized pine products may contain boththe treated sapwood and the inherently decay resistantheartwood.

Kebonization results in greater hardness, resistance to decay and form stability.

A solution for the future

One of the notable benefits of kebonizedwood is its resistance to weather and wear; animportant property in situations where wood isexposed to the elements. Kebony is particularlysuitable for use in outdoor situations such asdecking, terrace surfaces and jetties.

Other notable benefits are exceptionally good de-cay resistance and a long life span. This durabilityis achieved without the drawbacks associatedwith traditional impregnation methods. That iswhy we have been granted the Swan eco-label on

the Nordic pine used in this process.

Kebony is far more stable than other wood types. The only change that will be noticeable over time is the patination that occurs in wood exposed to the elements.

Kebony resembles teak and other tropical varieties of wood. It is dark, and acquires a silver-grey patina over time if left untreated. Kebony wood is also much harder than most other wood types.

The tropical rain forest the Earths richest natural environment is on the verge of destruction. The harvesting of tropical timber is currently on a level that is far from defensible. The felling activities are environmentally indefensible and are depriving the indigenous population and other local groups dependent on forest resources in order to survive of the very basis of their existence.

Kebony is environmentally sustainable and as attractive as teak. Durable and produced without environmentally harmful substances. Positive climate effect compared to building materials such as metals, plastics and concrete.

Kebony wood offers new design possibilities. Thewood is well suited for use on faades, roofs,structural details and terraces. It is also suitablefor indoor applications such as flooring. The qualityaspects are also important to architects in ensuring

that structures tolerate climates better than withother wood types with no priming or paintingrequired. Although Kebony wood is more expensivethan untreated equivalents, its life cycle costs arecompetitive with other wood materials.

It all began when a few architects realised the possibilities which Kebony wood had to offer. Andmany more have arrived at the same conclusion. Architects advise construction clients on long-termconditions that must be taken into consideration. These recommendations are based on stringentaesthetic, qualitative and financial considerations.

Lund Hagem Architects often utilize wood in our projects, and prefer to do so. We believe that wood is a material with many good properties,

says Einar Hagem.

Whenever possible, we opt for solutions that allow the wood to retain its natural appearance with-out paint or other types of treatment. Wood also works extremely well in natural environments and in conjunction with other building materials such as concrete, slate, steel and glass.

We had previously tried out Kebony wood in some of our smaller projects. We had also kept material samples to observe how the wood reacts to sun, wind and rain over time. So when we won the con-tract to design Quality Spa & Resort Krager, we recommended Kebony Pine as one of the materials to be used.

We placed particular emphasis on the colour tones and patina that will develop over the years to come. We try to avoid painting or staining of faades, both for reasons of maintenance and also to bring out the materials appearance of rough-ness. The fact that the impregnation method has a documented ecological profile is very positive.

Lund Hagem Arkitekter AS seeks to form a modern, timeless architectural style which is clearly rooted in Nordic traditions. This has won the firm of archi-tects considerable acclaim for its projects, as well as a number of awards. We Englishmen have roughly the same at-titude to our gardens as Norwegians do to their forests and fields. Perhaps thats because Norway will soon have a British

climate. There is a growing interest in new and more unconventional gardening solutions. And what could be more natural in Norway than bringing wood into the garden?

Wood that is used in gardens has to withstand the harsh Norwegian climate. A lot can be said in favour of copper impregnation, but it isnt exactly attrac-tive. The alternative is having to spend the few

sunny summer days we do get on painting, oiling or staining. With Kebony wood this could all be a thing of the past. Durable and beautiful all in one go!

Would you prefer to enjoy the summer evenings in conservative and discrete surroundings or in an environment marked by creative and environmen-tally friendly innovation? Whatever your personal preference, Kebony wood offers alternatives for customers with an eye for design.

Darren Saines is one of Norways leading land-scape and garden designers. He has undertaken numerous exciting projects and often recommends Kebony wood as an integral part of the solutions he works on.

Public authorities are concerned with environ-mental issues, with combinations of functional-ity and aesthetics and with measures that can reduce the requirements for continual mainte-nance.

Kebony has been well received by, for example, Norwegian municipalities, who have chosen Kebony wood when building many of their schools and day care institutions. This also means that they have made environmentally sound choices. They have opted for solutions that provide pleasant environ-ments as well as durability. The latter factor also means that their maintenance budgets can be used for items other than painting and maintaining wood surfaces.

The Norwegian Ministry of the Environments action plan for 2007-2010 states: The Govern-ment will be instrumental in ensuring that the public sector sets an example as a conscientious consumer and demands environmentally friendly goods and services that are produced according to high ethical standards. Products and services are chosen on the basis of life cycle costs, quality and environmental properties. In the case of goods for which environmental labelling criteria have been developed under the Swan or EU Flower eco-label-ling schemes, decisions shall be made on the basis of these criteria as far as possible.

Nowadays, its no longer a case of simplyputting up an office building. The media andlocal communities take note of whetherdecisions made are environmentally friendlyand otherwise sustainable materials and energysolutions are chosen.

The products have no harmful effects on the environ ment. Production of Kebony is based on a liquid extracted from biowaste. In the waste disposal phase, Kebony can be treated as regular untreated

The products have a golden brown colour which natur-ally turns grey on outdoor exposure. The products acquire a natural silver-grey patina and exposure to sun and rain creates an interesting effect of depth.

The process results in the wood cells being permanently swelled which, compared with untreated wood, reduces shrinkage and swelling by approximately 50%.

Kebony products require no form of maintenance beyond normal cleaning.

The process increases the density of the materials and makes them stiffer and significantly harder than untreated wood.

The raw materials for Kebony are taken from sustainably managed forests with large tim-ber harvests. All our suppliers hold certificates guaran teeing the origin of their timber.

Good durability and long life spans in harsh climates. No need for paint products etc to retain product properties. Required maintenance is limited to normal cleaning.

Protects against decay, fungi, insects and other wood destroying microorganisms.

Kebony contains no chemicals that can be released into the environment. The polymer is permanently grafted to the cell structure in the wood by an irreversible process.

de faade ventile : il prsente un excellent comportement mcanique avec une grande rsistance

Il dispose de 2 avis techniques en cours dinstruction en fixation visible, lun sur ossature bois et lautre sur

External use requires a special specific glue and an annual maintenance procedure (check our website for instructions).

Il pannello lightform pu essere fornito bordato in ABS, PVC o laminex con decorativi e finiture combinate alla superficie, grazie alla sinergia con Caspani. Come gli altri pannelli pu essere forato, fresato secondo le richieste del Cliente. Il pannello lightform prodotto a freddo con incollaggio poliuretanico.

MANIPOLAZIONE Per evitare inflessioni o macchie dumidit disporre i pannelli su pallet applicando opportuni distanziali. Per il prelievo e la manipolazione, usare ventose o guanti.

Lightform can be supplied with ABS, PVC or laminex edging, plus patterns and finishings in coordination with the surface, thanks to synergies with Caspani. As for other panels, it can be realized drilled and grooved according to customer requirements. Lightform panel is manufactured with cool polyurethane glueing.

STORING Keep products in an airy and dry environment, with relative air humidity between 35% and 65%. Do not stock alongside flammable materials. If exposed to ultraviolet sunrays, the panel may deteriorate.

HANDLING To avoid damage or humidity stains, pile panels on pallets with appropriate spacers. For picking up and handling, use suction cups or gloves.

STORAGE Keep the goods in a dry and ventilated place (relative humidity 35%-65%). Do not store with easily inflammable substances. If exposed to ultraviolet rays of the sun the panel may deteriorate. Avoid creating unmanageably high and unstable stacks.

MANIPULATION To avoid warping or damp stains place the panels on pallets with suitable spaces. Use suction pads or gloves when handling the panels.Machinary and equipments must be fitted with appropriate aspiration devices.
