Total funding, 273,494 Euros. This is a second phase of a collaborative programme, between University of Ghent in Belgium, university of Nairobi, KEFRI and BGF.The partnership will continue to join forces to clear off the last technical barriers to achieve massive planting of Melia volkensii, and will be focussed on developing a good rooting system and reducing losses during acclimatisation of elite clones and indigenous hardwood tree that will have a large impact on rural development in Kenyan semi-arid regions. The research will further work on the validation of the insecticidal extract of leaves and fruits. The capacity of the UON in-vitro lab will be further strengthened and the entomology lab of UON will be up-graded. Knowledge transfer regarding in-vitro and biopesticide research will be realized by postgraduate student’s research, (4 Masters and 2 Ph. D) mutual visits and workshops for foresters and farmers will also be undertaken during the life of the project. 2. 2015 – 2020 . This is expected to contribute to improved food and nutritional security in the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan through increased use of high quality seed of superior crop varieties. The students will be competitively selected from agricultural research, extension and training institutions in the D. R Congo and South Sudan. Selection criteria will be based on the admission requirements for postgraduate training at the University of Nairobi. The 16 candidates will be enrolled for a 2-year Masters of Science (MSc) degree training at the University of Nairobi. After graduation the trainees will return to their work stations in their home country to advance the research already started. 3.2015 – 2020. Increasing the Development impact of Agricultural Research. Australia Awards –Africa Fellowships. Funded by the Australian Government, a Collaboration with University Of Sydney, Australia; Prof. Robyn McConchie PI; University of Nairobi, Prof. Florence Olubayo, co-ordinator. Other collaborators; KALRO, ICIPE , FARA and World Vegetable Centre,Arusha Tanzania. This Project is designed for African, mid-career male and female professionals, working in agricultural policy, research and outreach, both in government and the private sector. It aims to increase their understanding, and applied knowledge and practice of maximizing impact of agricultural research, particularly focusing on forming effective partnerships across the public and private sectors. It is also designed to facilitate the building of networks within Africa among participants, as well as develop cross Africa-Australia linkages in this area. It is a training programme that will increase the participants’ capacity to develop effective, relevant, contextually-appropriate and high-impact agricultural research programs. The course will do this through increasing participants’ capacity to work in multi-stakeholder partnerships to increase agricultural innovation, adoption and extension, and strengthen participants’ management, planning, problem-solving, communication and outreach skills and abilities as agents of change 4. 2014 – 2021 . Capacity building in Plant breeding and Seed Technoloy for improved food and nutritional Security. Funded by AGRA. Prof. Florence olubayo and Prof. James Muthomi. Total funding, USD 500,627. This scholarship project will increase the human capacity in Plant Breeding and Seed Technology and business Management in Eastern Africa in order to contribute to improved food and nutritional Security in the Region. The programme will enhance knowledge and skills in participatory plant breeding, biotechnology, seed technology and seed business management of the12 sponsored scholars for the benefit of small scale farmers. The Scholars include 6 Kenyans, 4 Tanzanians and 2 South Sudanese. They will undertake their postgraduate training at the University of Nairobi, Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection. 5 students will take M sc. In Plant breeding and biotechnology while 7 will launch the new M sc programme in Seed Science and Business Management. 5. 2010 – 2017.
