SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did You Know?

Try these tips to get your children talking about their days Ever been met with silence when you ask, “How was your day?” Your communication efforts with your children, especia-lly school-age children, may need some tweaking. Try asking concrete questions, like “Who did you sit next to at lunch?” or, “What was the most interesting thing you learned today?” If your child is struggling with sharing his or her emotions, it might be helpful to ask about other emotions you see around you. Find opportunities to get children talking about how they feel by focusing on other people: “Why do you think that girl and her dad are hugging? What made that boy on the play-ground mad earlier?” You may be surprised at the results! For more tips, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Communicating with School-Age Children” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

December 8, 2021 Dear brothers and sisters of St. Linus community, Allow me to greet all of you with the love and peace of Christ on this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary! I pray that you are safe and healthy as you receive this message. It has been six (6) months since I as-sumed the office of the pastor of Saint Linus Church. As your new pastor, I devoted this period in the process of meeting, listening, and consulting with parishioners both individually and as group. Aside from initiating some minor changes, I tried to preserve the customs and practices of our community. We are all aware and in agreement that the pandemic has totally changed our lives as individuals and as a commu-nity. Although the pandemic has caused limitations and restrictions in our social, and spiritual lives, it has also brought new and creative ways in living and celebrating our faith. After almost two years of living in pandemic, our parish community is still experiencing its stinging effects. Our church suffers from low turnout of participants in daily and weekend masses. Church atten-dance is about half full as compared during the pre-pandemic days. Many parishioners are still cautious of coming back to church because of their health situations and choose to follow celebrations in their homes through television and social media (live stream masses on Facebook of their choice church or networks). Our church’s fund has been greatly depleted due to low turnout of Sunday collections and online dona-tions. Parish events, gatherings, which are occasions for renewing and deepening our community bond have been limited or cancelled. A few beloved parish members and volunteers have become fallen victims of the raging and ever-mutating virus. The common question we ask ourselves is: “When or where will this end?” Instead of drilling on this open-ended question, why not ask ourselves these questions: When do we start coming together and remake our parish community? When do we start to pick up the scat-tered pieces in our community and slowly put them back into their places? When do we start to renew our community life? If we wait for the pandemic to end before we start picking up the pieces, the an-swer may not come very soon. We need to REENGAGE, RECONNECT AND RENEW our parish life. WE NEED TO START NOW, Not Later. Let us not be overcome by worry, fear, doubt or uncertainty. Let us not be cowed by the threat of the pandemic. Let our FAITH be our arm and strength in starting to rebuild our community. As your pastor, I sincerely INVITE, ENCOURAGE and CHALLENGE you to come out and join me in this noble aspiration of parish renewal. I strongly believe that the Lord doesn’t want us to remain in our den until the sun comes out. It is the time now to be courageous in the midst of fear and worry. It is the right time to wake up from the long slumber of coldness, Indifference, lack of involvement, ‘I don’t care” mentality” and put on the armor of faith and trust in the Lord. Without neglecting or disregarding health protocols (wearing face mask, maintaining proper distancing, proper sanitation) we can do this. With the Lord, we can overcome anything. (“I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13) If God is with us, who can be against us? (Romans 8: 31) A blessed Christmas and a hope filled new year to all! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Erasmus B. Soriano Pastor
