“As the danger of offending comes mainly from the diffi-culty in assessing which things are noticed and which are not noticed at least as a precaution we should never talk about ourselves, because this is an issue that certainly our view and others don’t ever coincide.(…) To the bad habit of talking about yourselves and own faults, we must add, as for-ming a block with it, the other habit of denouncing the others’ characters unrelated defects si-milar to ours. And we are cons-tantly talking in these defects, as if it were a kind of detour to talk about ourselves; they join the pleasure of confessing and absolving our-selves.

Marcel Proust, in “In the Shadow of the Young Girls in Bloom”

Acho

IntroductionMarcel Proust was absolutely right. The way we see our-selves depends on our self-esteem, our personality, but also on the way others react to what we are. Self-image is, therefore, a suspicious repre-sentation. Nevertheless I take the risk and say about myself that I have an inventive spirit, I am ambitious, I have a strong personality, I am perceptive, honest, and responsible and have an acute sense of humour – something very important nowadays. These features are, on the surface, probably appro-priate to pursue any profession in the creative field.

For a long time I thought I would make a career in Fine Arts, more specifically Painting. However, Art is spirit; it feeds on the individual’s motivations and doesn’t necessarily have a commitment with society. De-sign, on the opposite, is mass driven and can eventually be mater soaked in spirit, no aimed only at contemplation, but something that evokes and motivates. To control the power and pos-sibilities of design, working communication in various levels, make it suitable to a particular public, exercise dif-ferent languages, keep up with technical evolution, develop one’s own, personal innovative and distinctive aesthetics, are the true challenges that design has given me as a profession and can only be achieved with persistence and dedication.Design is to strong a presence to be ignored, and its products are real weapons of mass “seduction”. I guess my rela-tionship with design started slowly from the outside to the inside… When I was a child, I had the habit of keeping vin-

tage matchboxes, sugar packs with Christmas illustrations and had a special fondness for an educational game made of plastic letters that were detach-able and with which it was pos-sible to form words. However, I preferred to cut the letters and force graphic associations be-tween them. These expressive results were viewed as barbar-ic acts against a toy. Later on, when I was a teenager design seduced me through the spe-cial CD editions of favourite bands, or through some post-ers I underhandedly removed of the streets, faded by the sun, filled with glue and vestiges of other posters, or even stained by the rain. And even though I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I must admit that some purchases were intuitive, motivated by the distinctive pagination, by the frameworks of a photographer, the vibrant colours of the il-lustrations, by its stroke, by the luxurious finishing of the bind-ing… Some of those purchases became real disappointments, others an object of affection and cult, by its consistency. The

contents concern me and are, in fact, important. I consider that design should not serve as a weapon of deception, or a tool in the service of mediocri-ty. It must be relevant, and the designer must be aware of the responsibility as the interpreter of these messages, be it the motivations more commercial or philanthropic. In a near future, I hope to have the possibility to gain experi-ence and, thus, acquire more technical, interpretative and inter-relational abilities within the work world.

The Visual Alphabet Home Sweet Home, establishes a connection between the Latin alphabet with 26 letters and everyday objects that may be easily found at home. I used a language that evokes through colours; graphic elements and typography, the 80’s.The most relevant graphic element to the composition of the set was the Polaroid came-ra (an 80’s icon). This element brought with it all the adjacent elements and generated the logic of the presentation of the images that make up the alphabet. The adjective “Sweet” is used in the logo so it suggests two different meanings. The first is related to the expression “Home, Sweet Home”. The se-cond associates the term to the palate itself, and this meaning is reinforced by the ice cream spoon placed in the opening of the camera (this opening re-presents the mouth, assuming that the camera is the head of the female figure). The key hole emerges as the “O” in the word “Home”, and accentuates the idea that

through the visualization of the objects of a particular home, it’s possible to apprehend the life of its inhabitants, it allows us to snoop. The positivity of the theme is accentuated by the use of the rainbow (also connected to the Polaroid imaginary, as it was part of its original logo) and by the framing of the sky blue and the clouds. The chosen application to the materialization of the project was the poster, as it allows us to visualize the whole alphabet and because it approaches the reader in a clear and direct way, who can observe and compare the objects and their corre-spondence within the alphabet.

This was a simulated project and the first stage consisted in appointing an inadequate cor-porate identity and completely reform it. It has as a starting point the corporate identity Es-cola Condução Penha in Faro. The execution of the Visual Corporate Identity of this driving school involved very specific demands for its deve-lopment. The reason is because this driving school has a very particular location, as it is situated near two High Scho-ols and a University, and its students change every school year. This immediately dictated the approach to the target-cus-tomer, which are mainly teena-gers. The logo, as well as the general graphic concept and the applications pallet were conceived to generate a sense of identity and appropriateness within the young customers. The logo is composed of ir-regular shapes and resorts to humour to carry out the idea of the typical instability related to the students early driving. The font used for “Escola Condu-ção Penha” was Original Olin-da Style, the shape of which looks indented and from which the surrounding forms that shape the car emerge.

The illustration of many of the promotional applications (like the canvas used to publicize the school during the acade-mic festivities week, the post card or the advertising cube) is composed of a student’s couple with a backpack and a laid out posture. The filling of the drawing is sketchy and resorts to sprinklings that make the analogy to the spilling of oil on the roads and the tyre tracks. They end up working as supporting graphic elements to frame all the applications, as well as the continuous and dotted lines used, representing the longitudinal road markings. The drawing of the two teena-gers is surrounded by the trace and the scissors, which gives way to a play on words with the slogan “Cut across! Enrol in our school!”The chosen colour blue also creates associations to the road imaginary, since it resem-bles the blue of the mandatory traffic signs and information signs.

The Magic brand covers a range of desserts that include gelatines; puddings; white cre-am and toppings with various flavours. The brand’s name – Magic - holds within a set of concepts such as illusion, en-chantment, fascination, make believe and imagination, which create the brand’s personality. The brand’s slogan “Magic Dust That Turns Into Something Sweet” reinforces all of these concepts. The brand’s logo, as well as the caldron, the colourful smoke cloud, the magic wand and even the stars that work as supporting graphic elements, explain how the Magic des-serts come to light… They come to light through magic, at least to the target-customer, the children. The body of the main figure of the composition coincides with the package’s volumetry. This main figure is a little misbehaved glutton, with his mouth all smeared, for his big appetite led him to give little bites in the logo. This gives a touch of humour and childishness to the package and brings the product close to the consumer.

The distinctiveness between the categories is made possi-ble through the different hair colour of the main figure: blue for the gelatines; yellow for the puddings; pink for the white cream; brown for the mousse and purple for the toppings. The labelling of each flavour, regardless of the category, is made through a badge with the pictogram of the dessert and a ribbon with its name in the front of the package. It’s a brand with an original presentation that due to its concern with detail and humo-rous approach means to gain a distinct space in a market whe-re the universe of the competi-tion is, in great part, “gray”.

LOBO MAU, FÓSFOROS USADOS BIG BAD WOLF, USED MATCHES

The project Lobo Mau, Fós-foros Usados (Big Bad Wolf, Used Matches), is made of a set of visual fragments of the children’s imaginary – a nega-tive one – related to the fears that prevail over the moralizing aspects of the stories and fa-bles.The package’s and book’s gra-phic background is inspired in 19th century matchboxes, and the used font (Mary Jane Anti-que) also evokes that period. The twelve illustrations that make the book portray in a very unique way typical scenes and characters of children’s stories. The drawing is dark, the stroke is used as a colou-ring technique and the collage is purposely rough.

O nome do livro caracteriza o conjunto, estabelece associa-ções e metáforas.

This book’s title distinguishes the set, establishes associa-tions and metaphors. It’s a known fact that the match gives light and that the dark is at the root of all fears, es-pecially during childhood. The used matches don’t bring good memories to the light. The book has approximately format A4 and is a “theatrical book”, with a dynamic pre-sentation of the text. From each page it’s possible to slide “subpages” (inner pages), through a rail system, that contain the texts. This project was developed for Graphic Design I, 3rd Year, where the students had total creative freedom.Although the book is about childhood, the target is the adult reader and it has a strong conceptual and affective character translated into an author’s language, the aspects of which don’t quite fit an insti-tutional design project.

OS MEUS BOTÕES MY BUTTONS

The Website Os Meus Botões (My Buttons) materialized an imaginary universe that tells the story of some almost mi-croscopic creatures that let themselves be seen occasio-nally by humans. They are called “Pins” because of their small size, they live in fabric – preferably wool and patchwork blankets. They steal buttons, their favourite food. The Website is presented with an opening animation made of a box that opens up, lets a pin escape (one of the small cre-atures of this story) and then grows legs and steps out of the frame…Next, it’s possible to get in the Website and start browsing. The main browsing obeys to a logic that relates to the dis-tribution and dimension of the main menu buttons [composed of Os Alfinetes (The Pins); Ga-leria de Alfinetes (Pins Galery); Alinhavos (Tacking); Protecção Contra Alfinetes (Protection Against Pins); O Mundo dos Al-finetes (Pins’ World); Contactos (Contact Us); Tempo de Adeus (Time for Good-bye)]. Howe-ver, there is a parallel browsing that’s implicit from page to page. This less obvious brow-sing works through the user’s search and gives clues about the story that involves the existence of these creatures. Word balloons and images pop up unexpectedly as a result of the user’s curiosity and the will to explore the Website.

Through an imprecise and vector language, which coha-bits with drawing, collage and the composition of material such as craft paper and fabric (admittedly digitalized), the Website has a strong homema-de character that also works as a stylistic feature. The sewing elements are recurrent (tracery, buttons, etc.) as well as the white fragments and spatter that act as trace, a clue to the passage of the pins. When it comes to the contents, the Pins Gallery shows the jars that contain the pins that have been captured, the Tacking (sewing term) shows some sketches and in the Pins’ World we can find felt pincushions. There is also an exit animation in Time for Good-bye, where a “Pin” is riding a bicycle, winks and says good-bye to the user.Even though this Website is exploring Flash in a basic pers-pective, the final result was a original product with conceptu-al features.

SNBPC (SERVIÇO NACIONAL BOMBEIROS E PROTECÇÃO CIVIL) SNBPC (NACIONAL FIREMEN DEPARTMENT AND CIVIL PROTECTION)

This project relates to SNBPC, Serviço Nacional de Bombei-ros e Protecção (Civil National Firemen Department and Civil Protection). Its demands were very specific as it means to rea-ch a general public (the Portu-guese population). As such, the information management was more impersonal and objec-tive. This project is made of fourteen leaflets (triptychs) for adults and seven leaflets (dip-tychs) for children, and its goal is to perpetuate prevention behaviour and self-protection within the population.Given the dimension of this project, its planning had an increased impor-tance so that the final pro-duct would be coherent.

Therefore, in a first phase it was necessary to create mo-dules that matched each one of them, to an area generated by the folds. Afterwards it was necessary to standardize the areas where the information was repeated from leaflets to leaflets and create relatively flexible rules to the areas that were going to receive the specific information for each leaflet. The choice of colour was equally important, as it is related to the leaflets theme (example – Forest Fires, Self Protection – Red).

It was designed to the leaflets meant to the adult public a set of pictograms that intersect into two subsets: identifying indicators for each theme and support pictograms to the writ-ten information. The creation of the pictograms was an addi-tional challenge, as it involved a formalization and simplifica-tion work that was not always easy, since the pictogram must convey the whole meaning of the category of the objects to which it belongs to, and in the end all of them must meet the same language. To the leaflets aimed at the children, there were created seven different author’s illus-trations, even though they were oriented according to the same language. The illustra-tions played not also a typical role of each theme, but also a symbolic and expressive role that overlap the first, so that the children are motivated to the written contents.

CIRCO A PRETO E BRANCO CIRCUS IN BLACK AND WHITE

Circo a Preto e Branco (Circus in Black and White) is a thea-trical book and refers to the historic period from 1840 to 1930 – a particularly prolific period to the burlesque culture with the so called freak shows. Initially, P.T. Barnum was res-ponsible for these shows, and the (sometimes forced) prota-gonists were people with very particular physical features or with physical and even mental disabilities. With no intention to pinpoint exploiters and exploited (since the border lines are difficult to establish), this book uses the universe of the freak shows as a starting point and brings to light a set of stories frozen in time.Circo a Preto e Branco establi-shes and antithesis with the beginnings of the traditional circus, of which the most ob-vious feature, is the varied colour pallet, used as a banner to identify a show that is sup-posedly cheerful. However, the illustrations of this theatrical book are in black and white to accentuate the decadent and grim beauty of the characters that move in a corrupt and gruesome environment, where the inadequacy is used to feed a perversion show. The book is composed of a

package, setting, twelve cards, five movable characters and five holders for the characters. It allows the user to know a bit of the story of the figures that made part of the show (throu-gh the back of the cards), but it also works as a stage (the setting where the cards are pla-ced, in a vertical rail system), where the users can display the illustrations according to their will to create a different story whenever they want. This way, the book does not exhaust with the first use.

Here we are now, entertain us…”.

This theme can easily be transposed to our reality. In the Victorian age, where the-se shows had their pinnacle, people were profoundly dazz-led by novelty and scientific innovation, the manufacture of automatons, etc. It was also during this period that Darwin published his work “The Origin of Species”, which caused an enormous frenzy in the entertainment spheres and stimulated the productions of numerous farces that would prove the theory.Nowadays, society is overwhel-med by the possibilities of the digital world, by genetic ma-nipulation and plastic surgery. These instruments are being used thoughtless and syste-matically, and are leading into a dehumanization of the me-thods and is fading the natural gap between what’s natural, artificial and an aberration.

P.T. Barnum was able to feed the popular imagination by gathering and presenting specimens of a new human order that, although rare, was available to all for a small fee of a circus ticket. Today, the viewer has easy access to simi-lar contexts by turning on the television: “Here we are now, entertain us…”

NATURISMO NATURISM

PORTFÓLIO ALDA HENRIQUE

A revista Naturismo pretende informar acerca desta prática social.

The magazine Naturismo (Naturism) is meant to offer information about this social practice. Its contents include: the principles of naturism; his-tory; legislation; its influence on physical and mental health; its social conduct; the ethic values and aesthetic principles; family management; nudity and infantile development; the sense of shame; nudity and sacred; nude therapy and its relationship with Portugal and Brazil. It’s also possible to read in this magazine a final refle-xion over this subject as well as the relationship of some of its social and environmental principles with design itself in a sustainability perspective.Graphically, through an organic language, the magazine counts on a cover illustration that makes a direct reference to na-ture. Knowing that one of the most popular and controversial naturism practices is nudism, the illustration shows a female body, in a contemplative pose, naked, described by numerous kinds of leafs (a bit like Giuse-pe Arcimboldo). The colours also have a symbolic meaning, where green obviously establi-shes a connection with nature and very light pink on the back-ground refers to the skin tone. The order and display of the

graphic elements that compri-se paging are reduced to the essential, making the general look of the magazine “clean and breathable”, even though it comes in a small format (A5), but also embodying the idea of simplicity of the human body. The typography used for the ti-tle of the cover (Old Style) is in harmony with the stroke of the illustration itself in an indented and irregular version, but very similar to the milder typogra-phy used in the plaintext (Day Roman), which is a serif font with subtle transitions and with little contrast between the nar-row and bold elements. It was also used a sans-serif narrow font (Print Clearly) for the pic-tures’ captions, so that those captions have a secondary role and don’t compete either with the pictures or with the plain-text, in the reduced space of the format.

A inclinação diagonal destes elementos sugere mo-vimento, dança.

The project Cultura das Na-ções, International Folklore Festival was a cultural and ethnographic event within the scope of tourist activities in Algarve (Barlavento) during the summer. The goal is to promote the contact between the residents and the visitors, with multiple international and some national folklore asso-ciations, in an attempt to raise awareness for the ethnic and folkloric areas.Furthermore, this project com-petes directly with the event FolkFaro, taking place in Sota-vento.During the briefing the Cultura das Nações festival directorate announced the main guideli-nes for the Logo. This should depict international folklore in a neutral way – not making a direct mention to any country. This impartial approach was accomplished through an al-most iconic approximation of the impersonation of a figure embracing the globe, mea-ning the culture preservation of each country. The diagonal inclination of these elements suggests movement, dancing. The stability is then accom-plished by the reunion of this element with the typography, finished by a horizontal line.

The colour choice is obviously related with this theme. This being the case, brown esta-blishes an analogy with earth, the roots of each people and salmon emerges so it incorpo-rates the human factor. The graphic concept and treat-ment work together, not appea-ling to nostalgia, but appealing especially to the respect and preservation of uses and cus-toms, the contemplation of traditions, thus dignifying the festival’s participant countries. 52

Nesta perspectiva a temática, o tratamento gráfico, e a tipo-grafia (Helvética), contribuíram igualmente.

Therefore, the creation of a corporate identity of this company involved necessarily the use of the appropriate lan-guage. The approach is clear and to the point, the logo is structurally composed of two areas. The first (upper part of the logo) is formed by a set of padlocks disposed as if they were a row of houses – there are some elements that reinfor-ce this idea (windows, doors). The second area (inferior part of the logo) has the initials “MSS” that stand for “Monta-gem de Sistemas de Seguran-ça”. There is a contour around these elements, a “frame” that gathers and frames all the components and suggests a sticker, a quality seal. The padlocks feed quote the collective imaginary and feed the archetypes associated to security. The logo intends to perpetuate the values of protection, soli-dity, stability and trust. Within this perspective, the graphic approach and the typography (Helvetica) also helped. Chro-matically, the logo uses black, white and red. The first two colours appease the feeling of alert and danger of the red.The logo was then systemati-cally used in the various appli-cations requested by the client.

The MSS logo was improved; the shapes were refined and simplified. The logo was stron-gly associated to the materials that are typically used in the products sold by the company. Therefore, the logo looks like a superposition of metallic she-ets (a sense of deepness), bri-ght and with an aluminium like texture. It conveys to the public the evolution of the company through time, its success, a bi-gger consistency in its presen-tation, an ample improvement, a quality leap, an acclaim.

clara e organizada.

It’s made of a series of pictograms (glass; chandelier; cutlery; cake; violin; bottle; camera), the shapes of which had their origin in the company’s logo “Q” and the meaning of which relate to the pallet of possibilities available to the client. The website’s layout contains a kind of can-vas inspired on the logo’s “Q” and at the top of it we can find the topics of the main menu (Company; Services; Gallery; Contact Us), shaped like tabs that come up and down accor-ding to the will of the user. The information in each tab is deli-vered in three columns and the browsing rather intuitive. There is another animation in the ‘contact us’ page, which works as a courtesy to the client and thanks the visit.

Paper Applications: Menus, Description of the Dishes, Guest List, Promotional Christ-mas Party Card.Menus, Description of the Di-shes, Guest ListThese paper applications – Me-nus, Description of the Dishes, Guest List – obey to a layout that intentionally is similar to the graphic options of the website’s layout. This was su-ggested to the client so that the company’s image became standardized and stronger to the public. These applications have a ba-sic firm structure in which the information changes in accor-dance to each event promoted by the company, but a set of rules were established for its use, such as: font; font size; colours; maximum number of words per line, as well and edge definition that under no circumstances should be trans-posed. Two versions were cre-ated for each application, the main version and the seconda-ry version, more economical with ink consumption.

The first challenge was to in-terpret graphically in the logo, a set of ideas and values that were important to the client in terms of the services he offered. The logo should convey the va-lues of freedom, speed, move-ment, strength and vitality. Be-aring in mind that the project pertains to a horseman, these values describe the horse and the natural– almost wild - envi-ronment that surrounds it. The logo pictures a horse in motion whose “hair” wavers in the wind. In the horse’s head one can read the word “criador” (horseman), starting in the line of the neck and with the same graphic treatment as the head. The finishing of the logo invol-ved an aging effect to perpe-tuate the idea of the passing of time, tradition and memory. These associations express the idea of genetic heritage and of the term thoroughbred, which are valuable concepts among horsemen and buyers. During the development of this project the need to communicate with a more elitist, conservative and traditionalist target-public, and connect all of this with a rustic aesthetic. The chosen font to use in the support information to the logo was Garamond Premier Pro,

in the first place because it is a serif font that’s appropriate to the traditionalistic seal of Francisco Gregório’s company, then because its stroke is fluid and makes a mild transition coinciding with the stroke of the horse’s mane and finally because of its thickness varia-tions. The half dimmed picture of a plain in black and white serves as a backup to the logo and appears repeatedly in each application of the project. It serves as a framework and reinforces the message of free-dom, horses running healthy in their natural habitat.

UM DIA COM OBSTÁCULOS A DAY WITH OBSTACLES

The poster for A Day With Obs-tacles was executed in part-nership with designer Bruno Simões. This project had as require-ments the encouragement of solidarity, bringing information about a range of activities that would promote awareness events related to subjects such as the everyday mobility diffi-culties of the people who have to use wheelchairs. The poster conveys the main idea that solidarity pays off, and does it so appealing to elements that are universally associated to solidarity – the hands – which, in this case, assume the shape of a tree. The fruit of that tree (literally) is a pictogram that shows the disabled. There are other elements like birds, flowers, hearts, clouds, arrows, circles, arabesques, which describe colourful paths originating in the hands. The idea it conveys is one of posi-tivity, using a current graphic composition aiming at proxi-mity with the target-public, the adolescent school community between the ages of 14 and 18 approximately. CONCURSO EDITORA CINCO LETRAS CHALLENGE PUBLISHER CINCO LETRAS

The challenge released by the Publisher Cinco Letras consis-ted in drawing three very di-fferent animals: Monkey, Tiger, and Cow. The publisher did not determine any parameters to guide the kind of approach intended (it did not provide me with a story, nor did it deter-mine a target age group). The regulations only determined what kind of files to send, as well as some personal details and curriculum vitae. With total creative freedom, I opted for an unusual approach and decided to merge features of the human figure with ani-mal features. This project was, above all, a personal challenge, a path do acquire other techni-cal skills within vector illustra-tion, namely learning realistic shading. The result was rather unusual, the figures are very expressive, and each one of them let their personalities show through their facial and body expres-sions.

EQUIPA MONDO PORTUGAL MONDO TEAM PORTUGAL

This project follows on this business juncture. As a result, the director of the com-pany in Portugal expressed, in the first meeting, the intention of playing with that fact. The theme of the illustration is an expedition to Africa, more specifically to Angola, made by Equipa Mondo Portugal. The illustrations have a realis-tic nature, so details are very important in the representation of each member of Equipa Mondo Portugal S.A. (a team composed of fifteen people). Through the wardrobe (ins-pired in the movies “Out of Africa” and “Indiana Jones”), but also through a proper framework (background / scenery), made of supporting graphic elements (tropical vegetation, exotic flowers, sur-rounding vegetal arabesques, etc) and some typical expedi-tion material (map, compass, etc), an idea of adventure, group, initiative and leadership is conveyed.

It was a very complex project given its commitment to reali-ty. In an early stage, there were taken face and whole body pictures of each member of the company, which were the star-ting point of the illustration. The tropical framework of the figures previously involved a research of the local vegetation (Angolan forests). The illustration work projects a cohesive, strong, united team, motivated by a healthy ambi-tion. It reinforces the image of the company before the public, but also within co-workers. Two final proposals were presented.

This Logo was created for a young architect. It should ad-vertise his professional activity, but also differentiate him in an ingenious and original way and show a bit of his sober and solid personality.Structurally, the logo is com-posed of the abbreviation for architect (“ARQ”) (2), the plus sign (“+”) and supporting information (Pedro Simões, Arquitecto). The language is geometric, because of the nature of the subject and is reinforced by the typographic choice (Helvetica Light, as a starting point). Ho-wever, there was also a sim-plification work in the sense of reducing to essentials the cha-racters “ARQ”, using references partially to convey the whole. There is a constructive logic that rules all the characters. On the other hand, each character of “ARQ” is associated to an object used by the architect in his work: “A” – a compass; “R” – a pencil; “Q” – “snake” to draw curves (2), or a tape-mea-sure (symbolic associations). The suggestion of the objects is made through the strategic placement of geometric shapes (“A” – Circle; “R” – Triangle”; “Q” – Square) which also brin-gs rhythm. Even so, there is a very balanced relation concer-

ning the weight distribution. The chromatic choices were the client’s choices, as he identified himself with them. The rest of the logo elements are secondary elements. The plus sign “+” has a symbolic meaning that suggests the architect’s skills in different areas and its positioning rein-forces the stability of the whole set. There is also a support text information “Pedro Simões, Arquitecto”, that followed simi-lar rules to the ones followed in “ARQ”. The set is in a stable and agglutinating quadrangu-lar shape. The logo excels for its origina-lity, has a clever and distinctive presentation, which will convey that the work of the architect is novel, a breath of fresh air.

(2) Architect in Portuguese is Arquitecto,

therefore the abbreviation “ARQ”.

TIME 2010, QUANTO TEMPO O TEMPO TEM

Time has asked time, how much time time has, and time answered time that time has as much time as time has”. (3)

The Project “Quanto Tempo o Tempo Tem” gathers a set of postcards that are part of an annual collection, under the scope of the brand Time – 2010. It’s a simulated project, created from scratch and represents a first edition. The illustration plays, obvious-ly, an important role and is the result of the combination of numerous techniques: clipping, collage, photomontage, vector design. The result shows throu-gh a crude and intriguing aes-thetic. The fact that all images are in black and white suggest the passing of time, as if they were fractions, fragments of memory. The white background causes a strong contrast, an intentional shock, and suggests a sickening environment, of fixed ideas, ambiguous. There recurring elements in all of the illustrations, the more obvious of which is a line – sometimes horizontal, sometimes on the diagonal – that suggests depth.

The round shape was in the centre of the creation of the logo Time -2010 and also in the basis of the making of the ty-pography for the title “Quanto Tempo o Tempo Tem”. As the passing of time is the main theme, the circle is incorpo-rated in the composition as it represents the universe, the cosmos, and the time wheel that never stops spinning, a perpetual movement, and the perfection of all creation. The typography ends up leaving residue on each illustration, shapes that alone do not look like characters but with simple geometric shapes. The illustrations don’t have an objective message, nor are they limited to obvious com-parisons. They allow numerous interpretations and use me-tonymic associations to play with meanings, to expose and many times dissimulate the subject at hand.

“…when a day is like any else, they are all as one; and in per-fect uniformity, the longest life would be perceived as very brief and would elapse in the twinkling of an eye”.Thomas Mann, in “The Magic Mountain”

PINKY’S, BABY BUM!

The brand “Pinky’s, Baby Bum!” is a result of the current market trend that uses infantile illustration in a more iconic ap-proach, very close to the Japa-nese children’s animation. This causes real cult expressions surrounding the marketed objects (t-shirts, sports shoes, badges, snowboards, backpa-cks, note books, etc). Brands like Hello Kitty, Pucca, Tokidoki (by Simone Legno), Charuca, amongst others, are part of a movement that included in contemporary art the Toy Art, whose main public – contrary to what one might expect – is a grown up public. Everywhere there are new stores that ma-rket this kind of objects, where the illustrators take upon the-mselves to immortalize their figure collections.Pinky’s conveys the idea of sweetness, establishing as-sociations with hearts, stars, moons, rainbows, birds, teddy bears, clouds. But there is also an association to the palate through ice-creams, cakes, cherries, candy. Pink is the pre-dominant colour and is obviou-sly connected to the brand’s name. The blue identifies the sky as scenery.

The childishness is exacerba-ted, the main elements are two “extreme” babies who, still in their diapers, jumped off a parachute and are surrounded by all the other figures. All of them form a flock that celebra-tes joyfully supported by the clouds. There is, obviously, a set of strategies to capture the atten-tion of a specific target-public – the feminine gender public, adolescent and irreverent. In commercial terms, the prac-tical application of this project is constantly evolving, and everyday new applications arise for the illustration.

The illustrations Jardins Sus-pensos (Suspended Gardens) were executed freehand and are a spontaneous expression of the author. There are used detailed drawing methods (but, curiously, not at all rigorous), and that talk about the arrival of spring, positivity and the urgency of life.Drawing was not the only tech-nique used, but also clipping, collage and floral patterns. The final product was a post card set.

The work presented in this last chapter it’s the result of a selec-tion, appeared most from per-sonal initiative, before joining the academic teaching. There are some pieces of work made in the context of Secondary Education, as the picture “Tru-th or Consequence”, which won 1st place in the competition Imaginary (Escola Secundária de Silves), or “Night”, the first painting made by me, within the scope of the discipline Oficina de Artes (Escola Secun-dária de Silves). The sculpture “Ícaro”, was made in the begin-ning of the academic teaching, for the discipline Laboratório I, 2nd Semester, 1st Year of Com-munication Design. These works are not represen-tative of an exceptional gift for painting, or an hobby, but an intuitive journey in the world of images that led me to the Com-munication Design, therefore I consider appropriate to share here some of these works. The discipline of Art History played a very active role at this time to acquire a comprehen-sive knowledge about different art forms since the beginning of human history and encoura-ged a personal taste for art in general that is still with me.During the stage of adolescen-ce I found particularly interes-

ting to communicate through images beyond the oral form (curiously each painting had as its starting point “creative writing”). It was an engaging process, an exercise that when done emphasized in my view the message, elevated to a stage of excellence, its mea-ning was deliberately encoded, working through figurative metaphors. The issue revolved around an intimate universe and the variety of techniques explored also indicated a strong need for experiment, not so much as a vehicle to find an individual voice, but rather as a need that seemed obvious adjusting the language of the stroke to the demands of a theme, in a reci-procal relationship.Gradually the artistic creative process left me a little frus-trated, in reality everything that depends entirely on our will can become over time not much of a challenge. The creative process of design is obviously the opposite, pre-cise, well-ordered, and commit-ted to solve a specific problem. Above all I like the flow and technical flexibility, as if the beat between the ideas and the materialization of the subject seemed harmonized, however giving unexpected but always

intentional answers. Above all presently attracts me the experiments in the field of visual communication, and I think there are certain kinds of work that allow a blurring of boundaries between art and design, not only because of language or methods but espe-cially because of the questions that can be lifted and by pro-moting specific points of view. Design for his involvement with contemporary society occupies a unique position to promote discussion. I dare to say that design is now the main engine of popular culture, art agent for the masses, be-cause of his involvement with photography, film industry, music and fashion. And it is possible that the constant ex-change between art and design will change the face of both disciplines.
