Da autoria do escultor José Rodrigues, representa magistral- mente dois cavaleiros em confronto iminente, montados sobre cavalos e armados de longas lanças, elmos defensivos e escudos, representando assim, e de forma alegórica, a contenda que em 1141 opôs os exércitos de Afonso Henriques aos de seu primo Afonso VII de Leão e Castela, e que ficou conhecida como “Recontro” ou “Torneio de Valdevez”, um dos mais importantes momentos na formação de Portugal, marcando para sempre a História nacional e dando desta forma corpo á frase-símbolo do concelho: Arcos de Valdevez Onde Portugal se Fez. Completely made in cast bronze, it is one of the most beautiful examples of Portuguese equestrian art of the XX century. Made by the sculptor José Rodrigues, represents masterfully two knights in imminent confrontation, mounted on horses and armed with long spears, defensive helmets and shields, thus representing, allegorically, the struggle that in 1141 after the armies of Afonso Henriques (first Portuguese king) to those of His cousin Afonso VII of Leon and Castile, and which became known as the "Recontro de Valdevez" (Tournament of Valdevez), one of the most important moments in the formation of Portugal, marking forever the national history and thus giving body to the symbolic phrase of the County: Arcos de Valdevez Where Portugal Was Made. Atualmente é visível a torre medieval bem como o corpo residencial, com janelas “manuelinas” e entrada fortificada, maioritariamente edificado no século XVI. A torre foi construída em meados do século XIV, substituindo uma outra existente já no século XI. Depois de adquirido pela edilidade, apresenta-se agora totalmente recuperado, através de um projeto inovador de reabitação que respeita a importância, história e necessidades funcionais atuais. Its origin is deeply linked to the formation of the important "Terra de Valdevez" (Land of Valdevez). The tower was built in the mid-14th century, replacing one existing already in the 11th century. O Padre Himalaya nasceu em 1868 na freguesia de Cendufe, onde está igualmente sepultado. Foi um notávelcientista e inventor, pioneiro do aproveitamentoda energia solar e das energias renováveis.O seu aparelho de fusão solar a altas tempera-turas, o pirelióforo, obteve o primeiro prémioem 1904 na exposição internacional de SaintLouis (EUA). Manuel Himalaya é consideradoum dos maiores vultos científicos do seutempo e um verdadeiro visionário, cominvenções e patentes que têm hoje o maior reconhecimento e que se alargam igualmentea áreas tão alternativas e complementarescomo o vegetarianismo e a naturopatia.
Father Himalaya was born in 1868 in the parish of Cendufe, where he is also buried.
He was a notable scientist and inventor, pioneer in the use of solar energy and renewable energies.
His high-temperature solar melting device,Pyrilophore, was awarded the first prize in 1904
at the international exhibition inSaint Louis (USA). Manuel Himalaya
is considered one of the greatest scientificfigures of his time and a true visionary,
with inventions and patents that now havethe highest recognition and which extend
equally to areas as alternativeand complementary as vegetarianism.
