CONDITIONALS

WHAT ARE CONDITIONALS? Conditionals are clauses used

to express condition.

They are formed by a hypothesis and a result, separated with a comma (,). No comma if it is formed result – hypothesis.

The hypothesis begins with the word if.

There are four types of conditionals:Type 0, type 1, type 2 and type 3.

USES OF CONDITIONALS0 Conditional

• Used to express something that is always true.

• If/when.

• If-clause (hypothesis): If/when + present simple.

• Main clause (result): Present simple.

If/When the sun shines, snow melts.

If/When the temperature falls bellow 0ºC, water turns into ice.

If/When we heat water, it boils.

EXAMPLES

1st Conditional

• Used to express real situations in the present or future.

• If-clause (hypothesis): If + present simple, present continuous, present perfect or present perfect continuous.

• Main clause (result): Future/imperative/can/may/might/must/should/could + bare infinitive

If he doesn’t study hard, he won’t pass his exam.EXAMPLES

If he doesn’t pay the fine, he will go to prison.

If you need help, comeand see me.

If you have finished your work, we can have a break.

If you are ever in the area, you shouldcome and visit us.

2nd Conditional

• Used to express imaginary situations which are contrary to facts in the present and that are not probable to happen in the present or in the future.

•If-clause (hypothesis): If + past simple, past continuous.

• Main clause (result): Would / could / might + bare infinitive

EXAMPLESIf I won the lottery, I would buy an expensive car and I would go on holiday to a tropical island next summer.

If I had time, I would take up a sport.

If I were you, I would talk to may parents about it.

3rd Conditional

• Used to express imaginary situations which are contrary to facts in the past and also to express regrets or criticism.

•If-clause (hypothesis): If + past perfect, past perfect continuous.

• Main clause (result): Would / could / might + have +

bare infinitive.

EXAMPLES

If John hadn’t got up late, hewouldn’t have missed the bus.

If Peter had stuedied harder, he would have passed the test.

If he hadn’t been acting so foolishly, he wouldn’t have been punished.

Will, would & shouldIf + will or would: Make a polite request Express insistence Uncertainty

   If + should: Talk about something possible, but very likely to happen.

EXAMPLES

If the weather is fine tomorrow, we will go camping.

If you will finish in this form, I’ll process you application.

If you will not stop shouting, you’ll have to leave.

I don’t know if he will pass his test.

If Tom should call , tell him I’ll be late.

• Unless instead of if + verb (affirmative) 1st Conditional

Unless

EXAMPLE

Unless you leave now, you’ll miss the bus.

Were• Were instead of was for all persons 2nd Conditional

EXAMPLE

If Rick was / were here, we could have party.

•Giving advice

If I were youEXAMPLE

If I were you, I wouldn’t complain about it.

Instead of if• We can use:

Suppose / SupposingAs long asProvided / Providing that

EXAMPLES

Suppose / Supposing the boss comes now, what would you say?

I would tell you it as long as I now it.

You can see Dr Carter provided you have an appointment.

We will all have dinner together providing Mary comes on time.

If can be ommited…• In the 1st Conditional: if should.

• In the 2nd Conditional: if were.

• In the 3rd Conditional: if had

If

• Should instead of if (1st)

Should Peter come, tell him to wait.

• Were instead of if (2nd )

Were I you, I wouldn’t trust him.

• Had instead of if (3rd )

Had he known, he would have called.
