Located on the west coast of Baja California, Ensenada

is a sportsman’s paradise with popular pursuits

including surfing, sport fishing, sea kayaking, horseback

riding and mountain biking. If you prefer more leisurely

activities, take a scenic coastal drive to the Punta Banda

Peninsula to see La Bufadora. This marine geyser that

shoots from the sea toward the clifftops is one of the

largest blowholes in North America. Back in town, pop

into famous Hussong’s Cantina and sip a margarita in

the bar where the cocktail was reputedly invented.

CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA

Just off the coast of Southern California, lovely Catalina

Island offers endless adventures on both land and sea.

Snorkel the clear waters or venture out on a glass-bottom

boat tour to view the colorful marine life and sunken

shipwrecks. Equally scenic vistas await you on a hiking,

biking or zip-lining excursion through the island’s

CROTONE (CALABRIA), ITALY

Crotone boasts an eventful history dating to

710 BC. Standing on a promontory overlooking the

sea, Capo Colonna Archaeological Park holds some

of the most ancient remains, including a column of

the temple of Hera Lacinia from the fifth century

BC. The town cathedral is notable for its 12th

century baptismal font and the icon of the Black

Madonna brought from the East when the church

was first built. Traverse a narrow strip of land to

visit Le Castella, an ancient citadel constructed on a

small island, or explore the museum in the imposing

16th century Castle of Charles V.

opportunities. Follow a trail through the densely

forested Golfito National Wildlife Refuge to observe

rare flora and fauna, and emerge at a scenic outlook

GAETA, ITALY

Perched on a promontory between Rome and Naples,

gorgeous Gaeta has been a popular seaside resort for

centuries and has also served as both an ancient and

modern naval port. The skyline is dominated by a

massive castle of uncertain origins, perhaps dating to

the sixth century. A climb up Monte Orlando takes you

to the mausoleum of Roman senator Lucius Munatius

Plancus, which dates to the first century BC. Here you

can gaze down upon Serapo Beach, where you might

relax on the fine sands next to crystalline waters upon

your descent.

PIOMBINO (TUSCANY), ITALY

On the slopes of the promontory of Piombino

overlooking the bay of Baratti, an archaeological park

holds thousands of years of history in the remains

of the ancient Etruscan town of Populonia. The

historic center of Piombino seems relatively modern

by contrast. Pass through the 13th century gateway

and stroll along the Piazza Bovio, which stands on a

picturesque cliff overlooking the Tuscan Archipelago.

Ride a ferry to the nearby island of Elba and relax on

the splendid beaches or take in the views from the

garden villa where Napoleon was exiled.

LA PAZ, MEXICO

Despite being the capital of the Mexican state, Baja

California Sur, La Paz enchants with its slow-paced

lifestyle and small-town charms. Nestled among laurels

and date palms on the Sea of Cortez, this “old” Baja

town offers tranquil beaches, along with beautiful bays

and stunning off-shore islands. Spend the afternoon

exploring the lively palm-lined boardwalk, or malecón,

featuring excellent restaurants and bars, along with

quirky shops. Nearby Isla Espíritu Santo also makes a

great day trip in which you can surround yourself with

gorgeous landscapes and witness vibrant sea life such as

dolphins, sea lions and tropical fish.

MANZANILLO, MEXICO

An enormous sailfish sculpture dominates the

waterfront of Manzanillo, known as the “Sailfish

Capital of the World” thanks to the excellent sport

fishing and international competitions. Manzanillo’s

verdant tropical environment lies along two crescent-

shaped bays separated by the scenic outcrop of the

Santiago Peninsula. Whether you prefer tranquil

coves or crashing surf, you’ll find the perfect beach

for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or simply relaxing.

Or take in the fabulous vistas as you play a round of

golf on one of the lush courses.

MARTHA’S VINEYARD, MASSACHUSETTS

Known for its miles of beautiful beaches, Martha’s

Vineyard invites relaxation. Lining the beaches

of Aquinnah on the island’s western edge,

colorful cliffs topped by a historic lighthouse

offer extraordinary views. To the north, Oak

Bluffs displays the island’s remarkable charm in

its gingerbread cottages and the Flying Horses

Carousel, a National Historic Landmark. On

TRIESTE, ITALY

Situated at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic and

Germanic cultures, Trieste invites visitors to discover

new palaces, piazzas and cathedrals around every

corner. Along the canal, the gilded Serbian Orthodox

Church of San Spiridione is juxtaposed with the

neoclassical Catholic Church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo.

A walk along the harbor takes you to Trieste’s

majestic main square, Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia,

and to the Museo Revoltella, the opulent palace of a

wealthy baron. Don’t miss the Castello di Miramare,

Archduke Maximilian’s gleaming castle situated on a

rocky promontory north of the city.

PORTO SANTO STEFANO, ITALY
