World Water Forum 2012 — Mediterranean cross-continental process: Collecting conribu-tions/solutions, Marseille, France

Every three years since 1997, the World Water Fo-rum mobilises creativity, innovation, competence and know-how in favour of water.

It gathers all stakeholders around today’s local, region-al and global issues that cannot be undertaken without all stakeholders into a common framework of goals and concrete targets to reach.

In the framework of the Mediterranean cross-con-tinental process of the next World Water Forum, to be held in Marseille next 12-17 March 2012, 8 spe-cific regional targets have been identified; we are now collecting contributions in order to present during the Forum the existing and/or innovative solutions, and to get if possible commitments on their achieve-ment (solution = case studies illustrating real solu-tions that are sufficiently relevant to be selected for the Forum).

These “solutions” will form the basis for presentations and discussions at the Forum session, and it will be discussed earlier during the First Mediterranean Water Forum in Marrakech (Morocco) on 19-20 December 2011.

The eight Mediterranean Target Objectives are organized around 4 priorities as follow:

1. Improving water demand management 2. Use of non-conventional resources 3. Improving water governance 4. Urban and Industrial Wastewater collection and treatment

The goal of the 6th World Water Forum is to tackle the challenges our world is facing and to bring water high on all political agendas. There will be no sustainable development while the water issues remain unsolved.

The 6th World Water Forum innovates with:

A Platform of solutions, to last beyond 2012, for •all to consult and contribute to.A roadmap to achieve concrete commitments, in-•volving experts and decision-makers from differ-ent sectors and regions of the world.A new commission, “Grassroots & Citizenship”, •to involve and mobilise civil society.A strengthening of the political •process especially through significant contributions and commitments from parliamentarians and local and regional authorities from around the world.Debates on •sensitive issues.

Sexuality and Gender Politics in Mozambique: Rethinking Gender in Africa

This book is about gender politics in Mozambique over three decades from 1975 to 2005. The book is also about different ways of un-derstanding gender and sexuality. Gender policies from Portuguese colonialism, through Frelimo so-cialism to later neo-liberal eco-nomic regimes share certain basic assumptions about men, women and gender relations.

But to what extent do such assump-tions fit the ways in which rural Mozambican men and women see themselves? A major line of argu-ment in the book is that gender relations should be investigated, not assumed, and that policies not matching people’s lives are not like-ly to succeed. The empirical data, on which the argument is based, are first a unique body of data ma-terial collected 1982-1984 by the the OMM and secondly data re-sulting from more recent fieldwork in northern Mozambique.

Africa and International Rela-tions in the 21st Century

At the start of the second decade of the 21st Century, Africa is viewed in a much more positive light by analysts, investors, observers and policymakers.

China’s recent closer involve-ment with the continent has set the tone for new forms of engage-ment between Africa and the rest of the world.

The contributors discuss the im-plications for Africa’s future trajec-tories and how to understand the continent’s position in the interna-tional system.

Furthermore, they demonstrate how the study of shifts in Africa’s inter-national relations can help explain broader dynamics and the changing foundations of world order.

Poscolonial Artists and Global Aesthetics

What happens when social and political processes such as global-ization shape cultural production?

Drawing on a range of writers and filmmakers from Africa and else-where, Akin Adesokan explores the forces at work in the produc-tion and circulation of culture in a globalized world.

He tackles problems such as ar-tistic representation in the era of decolonization, the uneven devel-opment of aesthetics across the world, and the impact of location and commodity culture on genres, with a distinctive approach that exposes the global processes trans-forming cultural forms.

“This book is a significant intervention in debates on post-colonialism and a model of intellectual ambition in its constant crossing of disciplinary and generic boundaries.”

More People, More Trees

Over 20 years ago, concerned fam-ers’ groups in Kenya and Burkina Faso began to adopt new measures to conserve soil and water and to re-establish trees in their fields. This book returns to the same commu-nities, and some of the same peo-ple, in Kenya and Burkina Faso to document developments since the original filming.

The accompanying book expounds upon the powerful messages in the film and describes the technologies employed by the communities, pro-vides hard data to support their tes-timonies, and looks at the current challenges of soil conservation in the context of climate change.

The book and film package, will also inform development policy mak-ers, agricultural extension workers, NGO workers, and the broader de-velopment community about a no-table achievement in participatory agricultural development.

Scrambled Africa

Mark Milbank was born in Eng-land at the onset of World War II, before emigrating to Kenya with his parents during the post-war depression.

Mark was to spend the follow-ing sixty-five years in Africa on a rollercoaster ride from the colo-nial days of Kenya and the Mau Mau rebellion, through apartheid South Africa, Rhodesia s UDI and bush war, to Independence and prosperity, and finally the purge of Zim-babwe’s white farmers and the country’s subsequent chaos. He still lives in Zimbabwe with his second wife Nikki, plays bad golf, and tries to visit his now scattered family as often as possible.

The book is filled with interest-ing and funny anecdotes, some of which are quite coarse. The book is a useful reference for anyone seeking to understand what has happened in Zimbabwe over the past35years.

Kenya’s Independence Consti-tution: Constitution-Making and End of Empire

Narrative of the evolution of the con-stitution that was put into effect as Kenya’s history as a colonial possession came to an end. It details the attempts of the colony’s political elite and the British Colonial Office to find a con-stitutional means to move Kenya to the status of ind pendent state. As this process moved forward, political ethni ity assumed central significance.

This produced an environment in which demands for a federal const tution, popularly termed majimbo, came to dominate constitutional dis-course. Deep disagreement among Kenya’s political elite over this issue marked the remainder of the colonial period. That elite, now represented by the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and the Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU), advo-cated different co stitutional paths to independence. KADU’s demands for a majimbo constitution dominated discourseduring1962andearly1963,but deep disagreement characterized the constitutional negotiations.

Evidence, Ethos and Experi-ment: The Anthropology and History of Medical Research in Africa

Medical research has been central to biomedicine in Africa for over a cen-tury, and Africa, along with other tropical areas, has been crucial to the development of medical science.

At present, study popula-tions in Africa participate in an increasing number of medical research proj-ects and clinical trials, run by both public institutions and private companies.

Global debates about the poli-tics and ethics of this research are growing and local concerns are prompting calls for social studies of the trial communities. A pro-duced by this scientific work.

Drawing on rich, ethnographic and historiographic material, this volume represents the emergent field of an-thropological inquiry that links Af-ricanist ethnography to recent con-cerns with science, the state, and the culture of late capitalism in Africa.

At Home with Apartheid: The Hidden Landscapes of Domes-tic Service in Johannesburg

Despite their peaceful, bucolic ap-pearance, the tree-lined streets of South African suburbia were no refuge from the racial tensions and indignities of apartheid’s most re-pressive years.

This book is an intimate exami-nation of the cultural landscapes of Johannesburg’s middle- and upper-middle-class neighbour-hoods during the height of apart-heid between 1960 and 1975 and incorporates recent scholarship on gender, the home, and family.

More subtly but no less significantly than factory floors, squatter camps, prisons, and courtrooms, the homes of white South Africans were sites of important contests between white privilege and black aspiration. Subtle negotiations within the domestic sphere between white, mostly female, householders and their black domestic workers, also primarily women, played out over and around this space.

Development beyond Politics: Aid, Activism and NGOs in Ghana

Is ‘development’ a solution for positive social change or a cyni-cal western strategy for maintain-ing inequality? Do African NGOs represent a flourishing civil society or the strategic allocation of exter-nal resources by local elites?

Moving beyond an increasingly polarized debate about the role of NGOs, this book reveals the practic-es and social relations through which ideas of development are concretely established. Rather than reducing these to a single, encompassing de-velopment ‘logic’, Yarrow argues for the need to understand the mul-tiple and conflicting epistemologies through which development inter-ventions practically proceed.

Through ethnographic description, he brings to life the everyday reali-ties of development professionals in Ghana. The result is a profound chal-lenge to theories of development and public culture in Africa and beyond.

Africa Toward 2030: Challeng-es for Development Policy

With the deadline of the Millenni-um Development Goals approach-ing, governments are considering the main elements for a global de-velopment policy reference system after 2015. Adapting insights from the scenario analysis tradition, the contributors identify six major un-derlying causes of change and key uncertainties affecting Africa’s de-velopment prospects.

The drivers of change considered vital in shaping Africa’s future in-clude demography, climate change, technology and innovation, do-mestic political development, new actors in international develop-ment, and global governance. The book outlines several generalized scenarios for the continent’s future and discusses the implications of the changing African development context for the priorities and orga-nization of European development cooperation.
