The Presentation of the Lord February 2, 2020
Presentación del Señor
2 de Febrero de 2020
How can I properly prepare for Mass? This week I continue my catechesis on the Eucharist and Mass. The previous 3 weeks I reminded parishioners that the Eucharist IS the Real Body and Blood of Jesus, and NOT a symbol of Jesus. I reminded you that the 1 hour fast from food and water is still in effect, except for those taking medication or for other health related reasons. Last week I wrote about the proper reception of Holy Communion. This week I write about how to prepare for Holy Mass. First, I encourage you to read the readings before Mass. They are available on line (USCCB.org) or you can purchase a Sunday or Weekday Missalette. Being familiar with the readings helps you to better listen to God speaking to you. You can also attend our Thursday evening Gospel Reflection Group. Second, do your best to be on time for Mass, this helps you to pray before Mass begins. Third, try to maintain a respectful silence while others pray, and when talking and greeting each other in the lobby or entrance way, use your ‘inside voices.’ Also, don’t forget to turn off or silence your cell phones. Fourth, at the risk of sounding old fashion, let’s talk about dress. Please remember that you are in God’s house, and not a nightclub or Citizens Bank Park. So, your clothes for Mass should reflect the sacredness of the moment. Be modest in your dress. Fifth, you should not bring food, drink, or gum inside the main body of the Church (except of course for toddlers and babies, I have lots of nieces and nephews so I understand that). Sixth, actively participate in the Mass by responding to the prayers and by singing. The choir and cantor are there to lead us in song. Finally, although I know some people need to leave Mass after reception of Holy Communion for health or work reasons, but please try to stay until the final blessing and dismissal. Remember, you just received the Sacred Body of Jesus, remain for a few minutes and give thanks to the Lord.
God Bless you and your family, Father Vince

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
