JUSTIÇA”, vem ajudar-nos a rezar, a meditar e a

celebrar conforme a nossa história e a nossa realidade.

Ė deste modo que trilhamos com Cristo o caminho em

ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Abstinence: Catholics over 14 year of age are bound to

the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be

observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.

On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

Fast: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of

their sixtieth year are bound to the obligation of fasting.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of

fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed.

Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain

strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs,

but together they should not equal another full meal.

Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids,

including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

FR. RON’S RAMBLINGS

This weekend is the kick off for the

Archdiocesan Catholic Appeal. You should

have received a letter in the mail recently

concerning this important fundraising effort.

As you know each year the Archdiocese needs

to raise money for its operating expenses as

each parish does, only on a much larger scale.

The many ministries that this collection funds,

reach out to people all over Eastern

Massachusetts. The Archdiocese works to

sustain as well as spread the mission of Christ

in this part of the vineyard.

As you also know each parish is assessed a

certain amount that they are asked to raise. Last

year we raised about 87% of our goal. The

remainder was forgiven but that will not be the

case this year. We need to raise 100%; if we do

not the remainder will be deducted from our

parish checking account.

So once again I ask for your generosity. It

seems that every time we turn around there is

something to raise money for. But

unfortunately that is the reality when we have

to depend upon your donations to operate the

Church.

Please be as generous as you can be so that we

will be able to meet our goal this year.

Este fim de semana é o inicio do Apelo

Católico Arquediocesano. Vocês devem ter

recebido uma carta no correio recentemente

sobre este importante esforço de angariação de

fundos.

Assim como vocês sabem todos os anos a

Arquediocese precisa levantar dinheiro para

suas despesas operacionais assim como cada

paróquia faz, apenas em uma escala muito

maior. Os muitos ministérios que esta colecta

ajuda vai para as pessoas de todo o Leste de

Massachusetts. A Arquediocese trabalha para

sustentar, bem como espalhar a missão de

Cristo nesta parte da vinha.

Assim como vocês também sabem, cada

paróquia é designada a uma certa quantia que

eles são pedidos a levantar. No ano passado nós

angariamos cerca de 87% de nossa meta. O

restante foi perdoado, mas isso não será o caso

deste ano. Nós necessitamos levantar 100%; se

nós não o fizermos o restante será deduzido da

nossa conta bancária paroquial.

Mais uma vez Eu peço por sua generosidade.

Parece que cada vez que nós movemos temos

algo a pedir para levantar dinheiro. Mas

infelizmente isto é a realidade quando nós

temos de depender de suas doações para operar

a Igreja.

Por favor sejam tão generosos como vocês

podem ser para que assim nós possamos

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

FIRST COMMUNION

Retreat - Our First Communion retreats began this Saturday

and are scheduled to continue for the next two Saturdays,

(March 10

and 17

). The retreats begin at 12:45 p.m. and

end with the children joining their parents for the 4:00 p.m.

Parish Mass. This year we are blessed with 71 second

graders and four 4

th

graders who are preparing to join us at

the Eucharistic table for the first time in May.

GRADES 1 - 5:

Pencil Drive - As our pencil drive continues until Mar 13

the children of our Religious Education program are

collecting new #2 pencils and small sharpeners for children

in Malawi, Africa who cannot go to school unless they own

a pencil. Parishioners are welcome to contribute to their

efforts by giving new pencils to any of our students in grades

1 - 5.

Lenten Penance Service - Children who attend classes

on Sunday mornings (grades 2 - 6) will have a Lenten

Penance Service on Saturday, March 24

at 11:00a.m.

Students who come to this Penance Service are excused

from class on Sunday, March 25

. The Tuesday classes will

PRIMEIRA COMUNHÃO

Retiro – Os retiros da nossa Primeira Comunhão começaram

neste Sábado e continua para os próximos dois Sábados,

(dias 10 e 17 de Março). Os retiros começam às 12:45hrs da

tarde e terminam com as crianças unindo a seus pais para a

Missa Paroquial das 4:00hrs da tarde. Este ano nós somos

abençoados com 71 estudantes do segundo grau e quatro

estudantes do quarto grau que estão preparando para se

juntar a nós na mesa Eucarística pela primeira vez em Maio.

GRAUS 1 - 5:

Unidade de Lápis – Assim como a nossa unidade de lápis

continua até o dia 13 de Maio, as crianças do nosso

programa de Educação Religiosa estão colectando lápis # 2

novos e afiadores pequenos para as crianças em Malawi,

África que não podem ir à escola, a menos que eles tenham

seu próprio lápis. Os Paroquianos são convidados a

contribuir com os seus esforços, dando novos lápis para

qualquer um dos nossos estudantes dos graus 1-5.

Serviço de Penitência Quaresmal – As crianças que

freqüentam as classes nas manhãs de Domingo (2-6 graus)

terão um Serviço de Penitência Quaresmal no Sábado, dia 24

de Março às 11:00hrs da manhã. Os estudantes que vêm a

este Serviço de Penitência estão dispensados da classe no

Domingo, dia 25 de Março. As classes de Terça-Feira terão

o seu Serviço de Penitência em 27 de Março, durante o

tempo de classe. Os pais são convidados por favor, a trazer

seus filhos para um desses serviços ou qualquer Sábado

durante a Quaresma de 2:30-3:30 hrs da tarde na sala de

Reconciliação da Igreja Debaixo.

PASTORAL PLANNING 2012

The Archdiocesan Pastoral Planning Commission

(APPC) has begun a series of 20 vicariate consultations

with parish pastoral and finance council members to

discuss proposals to strengthen parishes for the mission

of Evangelization in the Archdiocese. We ask

parishioners to join the Commission’s work by prayer

and by visiting the planning website for important

information on the proposal and the Commission’s

work to date at www.planning2012.com. The APPC is

asking pastors and their councils to conduct Town Hall

meetings or other sessions over the next several weeks

to discuss pastoral planning efforts in the Archdiocese.

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH NURSE

MARCH IS DESIGNATED AS MULTIPLE

SCLEROSIS AWARENESS MONTH

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects

the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). This disease

affects women more than men. The disorder is most commonly

diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, but can be seen at

any age. MS is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, the

protective covering that surrounds nerve cells. When the nerve

covering is damaged, nerve signals slow down or stop.

The nerve damage is caused by inflammation. Inflammation

occurs when the body’s own immune cells attack the nervous

system. This can occur along any area of the brain, optic nerve

and spinal cord. It is unknown what exactly causes this to

happen. The most common thought is that a virus or gene

defect or both are to blame. Environmental factors may play a

role. One is slightly more likely to get this condition if you

have a family history of MS or live in a part of the world where

MS is more common. Symptoms vary, because the location and

severity of each attack can be different. Episodes can last for

days, weeks, or months. There episodes alternate with periods

of reduced or no symptoms also known as remissions.

Because nerves in many part of the brain or spinal cord may be

damaged, patients with MS can have symptoms in many parts

of the body. Muscle symptoms may include: loss of balance,

muscle spasms, numbness, problems moving arms or legs,

problems walking or with coordination or tremors or weakness

in one or more arms or legs. Bowel and bladder symptoms may

include: constipation, frequent urination, difficulty urinating or

leakage.

Eye symptoms may include: double vision, rapid eye

movements or vision loss (usually affects one eye at a time).

Numbness, tingling, or pain: Facial pain, painful muscle spasms

or tingling, crawling or burning feeling in the arms and legs.

Speech and swallowing symptoms may occur. Fatigue is a

common and bothersome symptom as MS progresses. It is

often worse in the afternoon.

MS symptoms mimic those of many other nervous system

disorders and the disease is diagnosed by ruling out other

conditions. There is no known cure for multiple sclerosis at

this time. However, there are therapies that may slow the

disease. The goal of treatment is to control symptoms and help

the patient maintain a normal quality of life. Medications used

to slow the progression of MS are taken on a long-term basis.

Steroids may be used to decrease the severity of attacks.

As with any health concerns please contact your primary care

physician and make an appointment to see him/her. Yearly

physicals are the best way to manage our physical lives and the

sinais nervosos se tornam mais lentos ou param.

A lesão do nervo é causada pela inflamação. A inflamação

ocorre quando as células imunes do corpo atacam o sistema

nervoso. Isso pode ocorrer ao longo de qualquer área do

cérebro, nervo óptico e medula espinhal. Não se sabe o que

exatamente faz isso acontecer. O pensamento mais comum é

que um vírus ou gen defeituoso ou ambos são culpados. Fatores

ambientais podem desempenhar um papel. Ė um pouco mais

provável que alguem obtenha esta condição se você tem uma

história familiar de MS ou vive em uma parte do mundo onde

MS é mais comum. Os sintomas variam, porque o local e a

gravidade de cada ataque podem ser diferentes. Os episódios

ou sensação de queimamento nos braços e pernas. Podem

ocorrer sintomas na fala e deglutição. A fadiga é um sintoma

comum e incômodo com o progresso da MS. Muitas vezes é

pior à tarde. Os sintomas da MS imitam muitos outros

distúrbios do sistema nervoso e a doença é diagnosticada,

excluindo outras condições. Não há nenhuma cura conhecida

para a esclerose múltipla neste momento. No entanto, existem

terapias que podem retardar a doença. O objetivo do tratamento

Prayer for Transformation

God, our loving Father, you speak to us as you did to

Jesus, reminding us that we are your beloved.

You continually transform us into clearer images of

yourself. Guide us as we climb treacherous mountains.

Be with us as we descend from our peak experiences.

Teach us to listen to your Son, and focus our sights on

Jesus alone. We ask this through the same Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the

unity of the Holy Spirit one God forever and ever.

Sunday of Lent

Affirmation and Transformation

Today’s Readings:

Genesis 22:1– 2, 9a, 10 –13, 15 –18; Psalm 116:10, 15, 16 –

17, 18 –19 (116:9); Romans 8:31b – 34; Mark 9:2 –10.

Today the “call” story of Jesus continues from last week. He

moves from temptation to Transfiguration, showing that like

every human being, he is always a “work in process.” The way

he gradually develops models the path for us. Luke 2:52 says,

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and

human favor,” a flowering that continues in the adult Jesus.

The Transfiguration may have been one of those times when

“you had to have been there.” Mark fills in with abundant

details for those of us who weren’t, but perhaps the best way to

understand what happened is to relate Jesus’ experience to our

own transformations. There on the mountain top he is given the

vision that would carry him through the Passion (which Mark

begins five chapters later).

As then, so now. Over the years, we too change, and hopefully,

improve. Even our positions on controversial issues can

gradually evolve. Remembering and cherishing God’s

expressions of love for us can help us endure harder times that

follow. God’s affirmation of his beloved Son must have

steadied and comforted Jesus when he was interrogated,

tortured, and nailed to a cross. As he slowly, painfully

suffocated, he must have remembered that voice speaking from

the cloud (for the Jewish people, the sign of God’s presence).

We also have this bright spot to cherish as we continue through

the rest of Lent.

Furthermore, we have the encouragement of Romans 8:31: “If

God is for us, who is against us?”

Afirmação e Transformação

Leituras’s de Hoje:

Hoje a "chamada" história de Jesus continua da semana

passada. Ele move da tentação para a Transfiguração,

mostrando que como a cada ser humano, ele é sempre um

"trabalho em processo". A forma como ele se desenvolve

gradualmente modela o caminho para nós. Lucas 2:52 diz, "E

Jesus aumentou em sabedoria, em idade e em favor divino e

humano," uma flor que continua no adulto Jesus.

A Transfiguração pode ter sido uma daquelas vezes quando

"você tinha que ter ido lá." Marcos enche de detalhes

abundantes para aqueles de nós que não estavamos, mas talvez

a melhor maneira de entender o que aconteceu é relacionar a

experiencia de Jesus com as nossas próprias transformações. Lá

no topo da montanha, ele é dado a visão que iria levá-lo através

da Paixão (que Marcos começa cinco capítulos mais tarde).

Como então, até agora. Ao longo dos anos, nós também

mudamos e esperamos melhorar. Até mesmo as nossas posições

sobre questões controversiais podem evoluir gradualmente.

Lembrando e apreciaando as expressões do amor de Deus por

nós podem nos ajudar a suportar os mais difíceis tempos que se

seguem. A afirmação de Deus sobre seu filho amado deve ter

assegurado e confortado Jesus quando ele foi interrogado,

torturado e pregado a uma cruz. Como ele lentamente,

dolorosamente sufocou-se, ele deve ter lembrado aquela voz

falando a partir da nuvem (para o povo Judeu, o sinal da

presença de Deus). Nós temos também este ponto brilhante para

estimar assim como nós continuamos pelo resto da Quaresma.

Além disso, temos o incentivo dos Romanos 8:31: "Se Deus é

por nós, quem é contra nós?"

Monday, March 5

Create an Alms Box

Today’s Readings:

Daniel 9:4b –10; Psalm 79:8, 9, 11 and 13 (see 103:10a);

Luke 6:36 – 38.

Today’s Gospel calls us to be “merciful, just as your

Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). One step in that direction

is Lenten almsgiving. Setting up an alms box in your home

will make the practice more regular and easier. Contribute

to it whenever you feel gratitude for your blessings. Then,

as Jesus promised, “the measure you give will be the

measure you get back” (Luke 6:38).

Tuesday, March 6

Service without Hypocrisy

Today’s Readings:

Isaiah 1:10, 16 – 20; Psalm 50:8 – 9, 16bc –17, 21 and 23;

Matthew 23:1–12.

It’s easy to condemn the hypocrisy of the scribes and

Pharisees, but more challenging to find examples of those

who serve single-heartedly, without pretension. Make it a

project this week to search out those who do, finding their

stories in the newspaper or on the web.

Wednesday, March 7

Saints Perpetua and Felicity

Today’s Readings:

Jeremiah 18:18 – 20; Psalm 31:5 – 6, 14, 15 –16 (17b);

Matthew 20:17– 28.

Martyred on this day in 203 at Carthage, Perpetua was a

young noblewoman and Felicity was her slave. After their

arrest, the two catechumens and their three companions

were baptized. Perpetua (age 22) was especially concerned

about her young son, whom her mother would bring to

visit the jail. Felicity gave birth to a daughter two days

before she was led into an amphitheater with wild animals.

In today’s Gospel, the mother of the sons of Zebedee

clearly did not know what she asked from Jesus. But the

two young women whose optional memorial we honor

celebrate today “drank the cup” of suffering that Jesus

himself drank.

Thursday, March 8

Saint John of God

Today’s Readings: Jeremiah 17:5 –10; Psalm 1:1– 2, 3, 4

and 6 (40:5a); Luke 16:19 – 31.

Saint John of God, whose optional memorial we may

celebrate today, is the official patron of booksellers, heart

patients, and nurses, but he might also inspire “slow

starters,” who come to insight in mid-life. At 40, in 1535,

he left his life as a soldier in Spain, recovered his Christian

belief, and traveled to Africa. After a time spent selling

religious books and pictures, he began a care center for

indigent sick people in Grenada. Later his followers

founded the religious order of the Brothers Hospitallers.

Friday, March 9

Saint Frances of Rome

Today’s Readings:

Genesis 37:3 – 4, 12 –13a, 17b – 28a; Psalm 105:16 –17,

18 –19, 20 – 21 (5a); Matthew 21:33 – 43, 45 – 46.

A wife and mother of three children who lived from 1384

to 1440, Frances, whose optional memorial we celebrate

today, was drawn to prayer and care for the poor. She sold

much of her wealth to help victims of a plague that killed

her son and daughter. Turning part of her home into a

hospital, she recruited friends and relatives to be nurses.

Eventually, they coalesced into a group that didn’t take

vows and lived at home. Read about similar lay

(www.vincentianvolunteers.org).

Saturday, March 10

A Parable of Comfort

Today’s Readings: Micah 7:14 –15, 18 – 20; Psalm 103:1–

2, 3 – 4, 9 –10, 11–12 (8a); Luke 15:1– 3, 11– 32.

The parable of the prodigal son from Luke is a good one

for children to act out. Or use it for lectio divina, reading

it, and then choosing one phrase to repeat and reflect on.

Many have found reassurance in the Father’s words to the

son: “you are always with me, and all that is mine is

yours” (15:31). Imagine God the Father saying that over

and over to you.
