SUBJECT: Your Club’s Activities

Saluti, I would like to take this oppor tunity to share what we have been doing since the last newsletter .

In July, 24 members traveled by bus to Toronto for our annual convention. We spent a day-and-a-half

in Chicago pr ior to ar r iving in Toronto. We attended many presentations, toured the city and enjoyed a

picnic. Mary Seppi was honored at the Gala Ball. Many members at the convention and dur ing the

Presidents’ meeting expressed hope that the 2012 convention would be held in M innesota.

We had another successful annual picnic in August with good weather and great fr iendships.

Eight members accompanied Mary Seppi (age 100) to I taly in September . She returned to her

bir thplace and hometown of Lavis where she was honored. She appeared in many newspapers and on

national I talian television. I t was quite an exper ience for all of us.

Joe and Sue Gnoza and Ray and Alicia Brozovich went on a separate tr ip to I taly in September. Rudy

Zattoni and family visited Val di Non in October .

The members present at our November club meeting voted to host the 2012 ITTONA convention.

Louise For t, Joe and Sue Gnoza and I are the co-chairs for the event. This is a very big event and we

will need help to make it a success. I hope you will be willing to assist in any way possible. We will keep

you appr ised of our progress in planning the convention and will welcome any suggestions you have.

I would also appreciate your input on how to make the Trentini club more meaningful to all us.

Lastly, I would like to extend holiday greetings to all of you and wish you a safe and wondrous

Chr istmas and New Year .

Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo,

Debbie

Another successful polenta feed. Forget the first robin. The annual polenta feed among Minnesota Trentini is a better sign of spring. This year’s event was held April 25 at the Buhl Senior Citizen Center. Among the “early birds” to work that Sunday morn-ing were (l-r, front) Sue Gnoza, Val Amistadi, Mariannina Marano, Diane Sandberg, LoRetta and Mary Seppi, Sharon Kearney, and Rudy Zattoni. In back are Joe Gnoza, Deb Corradi, Dominic Rauzi, Cathy Gentilini, Bob Kearney and Rom Amistadi.

Her college scholarship application to Trentini Tirolesi del Minnesota begins like this:

“My great grandfather Eligio Corradi was born in the Trentino province of Daone on March 19, 1879. In November of 1903 he arrived in America aboard the ship LaTouraine to stay with his brother Isadoro in New York. He subsequently moved to Chisholm with the great opportunity of working in the mines.”

Haley Corradi is among a group of recent high school graduates

who not only shares the experience of receiving one of our club’s scholarships, but also cherishes her heritage in immeasurable ways, perhaps more so than most of her peers.

She continues: “I never was blessed with the chance to know either Eligio, or his son (my grandfather Angelo), but I was lucky enough to inherit their values, stories, ethnicity, food and pride in my heritage,” she writes. “Perseverance and independence are two values that Eligio Corradi knew best, and they are two qualities I also embrace in my values...I will always remember my Trentini heritage was, and continues to be, a gigantic part of my life.”

Haley is one of three graduating high school students who received this year’s Trentini scholarships, each in the amount of $200. The other two are Brandon Plombon and Kyle Hammer.

Haley’s dad, Tom Corradi, and her aunts, Deb Corradi and Wendy Maki, are members of our club. In her graduating year at Maple Grove Senior High School, Haley says her objective is to gain admission to the University of Minnesota in the College of Liberal Arts with aspirations of becoming a secondary education teacher.

Brandon Plombon’s grandparents are Rom and Val Amistadi.

They, his uncle Louis Amistadi, and his uncle and aunt Barry and Kathy Bresnik, are members of our club. Among his ancestry who emigrated from the Trento area to the U.S. were Louigi Amistadi, great grandfather, from Roncone in 1909, and Santa Bertelli Amistadi, great grandmother, from Daone in 1907.

Upon graduation from Minnetonka High School, Brandon plans to pursue a degree in business management at Minnesota State University in Mankato.

“I am always interested in hearing about our heritage,” Brandon says. “Because I was intrigued to learn more, I took an Advanced Placement class in European history at Minnetonka High which is used for college credits. I would like to someday visit Italy and learn more about its people and customs.”

Brandon’s Trentini scholarship is better known as the Ernst “Larry” Seppi Scholarship, which is entirely funded by the Seppi family.

Kyle Hammer has a grandmother, an aunt and two uncles who are Trentini

Club members. Respectively, they are Alice Turk, Debra Krall, Rudy Zattoni, and Frank “Dusty” Turk. The Eveleth-Gilbert senior plans to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth upon graduation from high school but as yet is undecided about his course of study.

His great grandmother, Irene Giuseppina Negri, left her home in Tres Val de Non to travel to America in 1920. His great grandfather, Celeste Zattoni, had emigrated from Tres to the U.S. eight years earlier.

Kyle says his mother, Sandra Hammer, remembers how his great grand-mother could see the Alps from her small village, how beautiful it was, and how important it was to help family and neighbors. “She also remembers my great grandpa telling her about a church he helped to build in their little town,” he says. “They made wine by stomping the grapes and were extremely hard workers; and all the while family always came first. Hard work and helping others is what mattered, not personal wealth and fame as it is today,” Kyle says.

All three of this year’s Trentini scholarship recipients have not only carried a

full course load and maintained high academic grades, but they also have been involved in a host of extracurricular activities. These range from student gov-ernment, sports and music to volunteer service to their communities, all of which have earned them many leadership awards for their dedication and hard work.

(Editor’s note: Last year’s Trentini scholarship recipients were Anthony

Palcich, Allison Maki, and Brian Arola. Their names were included in the last Trentini newsletter (April 2010) with the intention of providing an update about each student in this edition. Sorry, but time ran out for us to garner the necessary information. We will try to do better by the next edition.)

R udy Zattoni’s portrayal of “See No Evil” in the July photo above proved to be prophetic two months later when he and

his buddy Rom Amistadi teamed up to harvest wild rice on a Mesabi Range lake. It was a warm, sunny day in September, but ricing was very poor. As their efforts came to a disappointing end, Rom paddled the canoe toward the marshy shoreline. Wearing waders, Rudy stepped out of the canoe into five or six inches of water to help Rom with the landing. He saw no evil. But near his feet at the lake bottom was a large, slippery rock. He stepped on it, lost his balance and fell over backwards into the murky shallows. When he stood up, Rom says, Rudy was encased in mud from head to toe, except for his face. And his eye glasses were askew. Rom couldn’t stop laughing at how surprised and disgusted Rudy looked. Unhurt but upset, Rudy blamed his ricing partner for causing his fall. Why would he do that, you ask? “Because Rom was the only one around,” says Rudy. Before the long drive back home from the lake, Rom protected the seats in Rudy’s pickup from the grime with sheets of plastic. Their take for the day was only about 12 pounds of the grain. “It’ll probably run us $125.00 a pound by the time we consider the cost of processing, licenses to harvest, gasoline for the truck and other incidentals connected with the outing,” Rom jokes. But that isn’t the end of the story. Once Rudy arrived home on Ely Lake near Eveleth, his wife Bobbette wouldn’t let him enter the house caked with mud. Before she would open the door, he had to strip naked on their deck. We can only hope the neighbors and passersby weren’t watching.

A trio of “monkey-shiners” on a bench. Going through the antics during a stop in Frankenmuth, Mich. on the return trip to Minnesota from the ITTONA convention in Toronto are “See No Evil” Rudy Zattoni, “Hear No Evil” Rom Amistadi, and “Speak No Evil” Joe Gnoza. Where were their wives all the while? Shopping, of course.

On the right, Luciana Svaldi (stand-ing), vice president with ITTONA in Chicago, reviews convention details with (l-r) Deb Corradi, Louise Fort, and Sue Gnoza. While enroute to Toronto on a chartered Happy Trail Tours Min-nesota Coach, the Mesabi Range group had a narrated tour of Chi-cago and stops at various sites, including the city’s Millennium Park and Magnificent Mile. While in Toronto, they also toured the city and visited places like the CN Tower and Eaton Centre.

Once every other year, the ITTONA international convention brings people of Trentino descent (and their spouses) together to explore their common heritage in both business and social settings

With the Chicago skyline as a backdrop, these Minnesota Tren-tinies were ready to explore some of the city’s highlights before reboarding their chartered bus from the Mesabi Iron Range to con-tinue their trip to the 19th annual ITTONA convention in Toronto July 23-25. From left are Linda and Pete O’Brien, Bob and Chris Springhetti, Sherrie Seppi, Rom and Val Amistadi, Mary Kay Hill (guest), LoRetta and Mary Seppi, Deb Corradi, Richard Seppi, Rudy and Bobbette Zattoni, Dominic Rauzi, Louise and John Fort, Myra and Tom Winn, Teri Weeks, and Sue and Joe Gnoza. The group of happy travelers later met up with fellow club members Ray and Alicia Brozovich at the convention.
