IntroductionThe Algarve is located in the South of Portugal, divided into three regions: serra(mountain), barrocal and coastline. Its fantastic and well known coast, is thatwhich annually attracts thousands of national and foreigners tourists looking

for holidays in sun and sea.However, there is an unknown Algarve, most genuine and still with plenty to un-ravel. This Algarve it is in the inland, away from the bustle of the beaches, wherelife moves to a dierent rhythm. Contudo, caso no seja possvel viajar desdeo ponto que pretende opte pelo Aeroporto da Portela em Lisboa,o maior aeroporto portugus que realiza voos para mais destinos.

De comboioEsta poder ser uma boa opo de transporte. Se desejar iniciar o

percurso em Alcoutim, poder ir de comboio at Vila Real de San-to Antnio, embora seja uma viagem que poder demorar algumtempo, vale a pena pela beleza do trajeto. Em Vila Real de SantoAntnio dever apanhar um autocarro at Alcoutim.Se preferir iniciar o percurso no Cabo de So Vicente, no senti-do inverso ao recomendvel, dever seguir viagem at Lagos e aapanhar um autocarro at Sagres. De autocarroA Rede Expresso possui uma oferta diversicada de horrios deautocarro de vrios pontos do pas at Faro ou at Lagos, con-soante o sentido em que optar fazer a Rota. De Lisboa existe umaligao direta para Balurcos, diariamente, onde se inicia o 2setor,a existe uma unidade de Turismo Rural que se pernoitar duasnoites poder efetuar o servio de transfer at Alcoutim para oseu 1dia de caminhada.Relativamente aos autocarros de carreiras interurbanas, existeuma forte limitao de horrios ao m de semana e no perodono escolar, j que a maior oferta de horrios na poca escolar.

By trainThis can be a good option for transport. If you want to start the path in

Alcoutim, you can go by train to Vila Real de Santo Antnio, althoughit is a journey that can take some time but it worth for the its beauty.From Vila Real de Santo Antonio you should get a bus to Alcoutim.If you prefer starting the path at Cape St. Vincent, in the opposite senseto recommend, should follow trip to Lagos and then catch a bus toSagres.See the schedules on the EVA website (www.eva-bus.com).For those who will do the path in MTB mode this is the best means of

public transport, because you can carry your bike without problem.We advise you to check the 3 available links, all signposted from thetrain stations to the main axis of Via Algarviana to help to plan yourtrip, this might be a good option to avoid travel time. See the scheduleson the CP website (www.cp.pt).

By busThe Rede Expressos has a wide range of schedules from dierent

points of country to Faro or to Lagos, depending what direction youchoose to start. From Lisbon there is a direct link to Balurcos, daily,where begins the 2ndsector, there you have a Rural Tourism where ifyou sleep 2 nights they can make the shuttle service to Alcoutim foryour 1stday of walking.Regarding intercity transit buses, there is a strong limitation of sched-ules in the weekend and on non-school period, since most oer sched-ules lies precisely in school time.

ClimaNunca demais salientar que todo o percurso se realiza no interior doAlgarve, com caractersticas climticas muito prprias e maioritariamentesetores com pouca sombra.Com um clima temperado mediterrnico, apresenta temperaturas amenasao longo de todo o ano. O vero quente e seco, da no ser o perodoindicado para realizar esta Rota, as elevadas temperaturas faro com queo grau de diculdade seja ainda maior, as linhas de gua, maioritariamentede regime torrencial encontram-se secas assim como a vegetao. Esta seguramente a altura do ano com menor beleza paisagstica para conhecer

a Via Algarviana.Embora o Algarve seja conhecido por no apresentar longos perodos dechuva, por vezes chove com alguma intensidade aumentado signicativa-mente o caudal de todas as linhas de gua existentes ao longo da Rota, eque por vezes o obrigar a ter de descalar as botas. Os casos mais preocu-pantes sero o atravessamento da Ribeira da Foupana, a ribeira mais impo-nente ao longo de todo o percurso e que em tempos de forte chuva podermesmo tornar-se muito perigosa ou at mesmo intransponvel, e a Ribeirado Rio Seco, que embora quando comparada com a da Foupana possaparecer bem menor, tambm a sua transposio o poder obrigar a ter deapanhar a estrada asfaltada que se situa bem perto, para sua segurana.A partir de setembro as temperaturas comeam gradualmente a descer,embora por vezes durante os meses de setembro e outubro as tempera-turas ainda estejam demasiado elevadas para caminhar. O outono assimuma boa escolha para se fazer ao caminho. Com o inicio das primeiraschuvas o campo comea assim a despertar.Mas a melhor altura do ano sem dvida a primavera. De fevereiro a abril,o campo atinge o seu auge em termos orsticos. A beleza dos campos o-ridos, com vrios salpicos de diferentes cores, o cheiro das plantas arom-ticas, o cantar dos passeriformes e o coaxar das rs no deixam ningumindiferente, certamente! Nesta altura do ano ter tambm a sorte de poderver algumas espcies de plantas em orao que despertam muita atenoe paixo, nomeadamente algumas espcies de orqudeas e a rosa-albar-deira (Paeonia broteroi).Aconselha-se por isso que caso as temperaturas sejam elevadas, inicie asua caminhada cedo, tanto mais cedo quanto maior a extenso do percur-so, evitando assim estar a caminhar nas horas de maior calor.

Summer is hot and dry, therefore not the best sea-son to do this Route as the high temperatures will increase the level of dicultyand the water lines, mostly of torrential regime, and the vegetation areas willbe dry. This is certainly the time of year with lower natural beauty to know theVia Algarviana.

Although the Algarve is known for not presenting long periods of rain, sometimes

it rains with some intensity increasing the ow of all water lines exist along theroute, and it certainly will force sometimes to take o the boots. The most worry-ing cases will be the crossing of the Ribeira Foupana, the most imposing river allalong the route and that in times of heavy rain may become very dangerous oreven impassable, and the Ribeira do Rio Seco, that although compared with theFoupana may seem smaller, also cross it may force the need to take the pavedroad located close to it, for your safety.From September the temperatures gradually begin to decline, but sometimesduring the months of September and October the temperatures are still veryhigh to walk. Autumn is thus a good choice to make the path. With the onset ofthe rst rains, the eld begins to awaken.But the best time of the year is undoubtedly the spring. From February to April,the eld reaches its peak in oristics terms. The beauty of ower elds, with sev-eral splashes of dierent colors, the smell of aromatic plants, the singing of birdsand the croaking of the frogs do not leave anyone indierent, indeed! This timeof year will also have the privilege to see some species of owering plants thatarouse much attention and passion, particularly some species of orchids andWestern Iberian Peony (Paeonia broteroi).If the temperatures are high our advice is to start your hike early, the larger thedistance the sooner it should start, avoiding to walk at peak heat hours.

Descrio geral do percursoA Via Algarviana um percurso pedestre de longa distncia (300km), classi-cado como Grande Rota (GR13). Inicia-se em Alcoutim, junto ao Guadiana,e termina no Cabo de So Vicente, em Vila do Bispo, passando pelas serrasdo Caldeiro, Espinhao de Co e Monchique. Desenvolve-se, sobretudo,em zonas orestais e atravessa vrias aldeias e montes, onde ainda persis-tem muitas tradies do mundo rural.A denio do itinerrio teve por base vrios critrios que ajudam a expli-car o porqu da atual congurao. Houve necessidade, por um lado, deselecionar caminhos pblicos ou de uso pblico, o menos pavimentadopossvel, de forma a evitar vedaes e outros obstculos articiais. Por ou-tro lado, o trilho deveria passar junto de apoios de alojamento e restaura-o, de forma a tornar este itinerrio praticvel. Por m, houve necessidadede selecionar os caminhos paisagisticamente mais apelativos, com pontosde interesse ao longo da viagem, tanto a nvel ambiental como cultural.Tudo isto levou a mudanas no traado inicial, passando de 240km para os300km que o percurso atualmente tem.Os 14 setores que compem a Via Algarviana no pretendem ser estan-ques. Existe a possibilidade de, nalguns casos, juntar dois ou de dividir umsetor em dois. Tudo isto depende da vontade do caminhante, a sua prepa-

rao fsica e, claro, da existncia ou no de alojamentos. Esse ajuste podeinuenciar, no nal, a durao global da viagem. muito provvel que, a mdio prazo, o aparecimento de novos alojamen-tos venha agilizar a redenio dos atuais setores. Esse , contudo, umtrabalho que levar o seu tempo, mas que faz parte da evoluo naturaldeste projeto.Da evoluo natural do projeto foram implementadas novas infraestru-turas aumentando a atratividade desta Grade Rota, somando cerca demais 492km ao eixo principal da Via Algarviana, perfazendo assim cercade 800km para percorrer. Destaque para: 5 derivaes da Via Algarviana;12 percursos pedestres complementares; 10 percursos audioguiados e 4Rotas temticas!O setor 10, de S ilves a Monchique, sofreu uma alterao, eliminando assimgrande parte do percurso que se realizava em asfalto, que aumentava ograu de diculdade do percurso. Com esta alterao de cerca de 10km, osetor aumentou a sua beleza paisagstica.Como v, motivos no faltam para se fazer ao caminho anal todos oscaminhos vo dar a Sul!Aceite o desao, Siga esta pista!

General route descriptionVia Algarviana is a pedestrian long distance path (300km), classied as a GR13.It starts in Alcoutim, near the Guadiana River, and ends at the Cape of S.Vicente,in Vila do Bispo, going through the moutains of Serra do Caldeiro and Serrade Monchique. It is implanted, mostly, on forest ground, with interesting naturalvalues, and passes by several small rural villages.The denition of the route was based on some criteria that help explain thecurrent conguration. First, there was a need to select public roads, to avoid

potential complications in the future with owners. Moreover, the paths shouldnot be in pavement or tar, except in villages where this is impossible to avoid.Finally, the trail should go along supporting points for lodging and restaurants,usually in villages in order to make the path feasible. With all this, there wasalso the obvious need to select the most interesting landscape trails, with pointsof interest along the journey, both environmental and cultural. All this led tochanges in the original outline of the path, going from 240km to 300km whichis currently the path distance.The 14 sections that make up the Via Algarviana are not meant to be staunched.There is, in some cases, the possibility to add two or divide one sector into two.

All this depends on the willingness of the walker, his/ her tness condition and, ofcourse, the availability of accommodation. This adjustment can inuence in theend the total duration of the walk.It is very likely that in the medium term, new accommodation facilities will makeeasy the redenition of these sections. This is, however, a job that will take time,and we hope to develop the best way possible.From the natural development of the project, were implemented new infrastruc-tures increasing the attractiveness of this Route, adding about more 492 km tothe main axis of Via Algarviana thus totaling about 800km to go. Highlight for:5 links to Via Algarviana; 12 complementary pedestrian routes; 10 audio guides

paths and 4 thematics routes!The sector 10, Silves to Monchique, has undergone a change, eliminating muchof the path made in pavement, which increased the diculty level of the route.With this modication of about 10km, the sector increased its scenic beauty.You have many reasons for make the way, after all roads lead to South!!

Sinalizao SignallingA Via Algarviana encontra-se sinalizada no terreno com um conjunto deequipamentos que incluem postes e setas de direo, setas informativas epainis de interpretao. Alm destes materiais, foram colocadas inmeraspinturas em superfcies naturais, nomeadamente rochas, de forma a indi-car o sentido do percurso, recorrendo sempre aos cdigos de identicaode Grande Rota (GR), tal como se ilustra na seguinte gura.

The Via Algarviana is signposted with a range of equipment, including polesand direction arrows, informative arrows and interpretation panels. Paintings

were also placed on the path, to indicate the routes direction, always using thesign code for the Long Distance Path (GR) identication, as illustrated in the

following gure.

As Se-tas Informativas, no indicam o sentido da Via Algarviana, mas meramentepontos de interesse nas imediaes ou locais de apoio ao viajante, existen-tes nas proximidades (ex. alojamento).

Regarding equipment, the direction arrows, always indicate the direction of theVia Algarviana and the distance to a certain village or location. The information-al arrows do not indicate the direction of the Via Algarviana, but only nearby

points of interest or support areas for the walker (e.g. accommodation).

RecomendaesAntes de iniciar uma caminhada, procureinformar-se sobre: Disponibilidade de alojamento. As opes de transporte existentes. Condies climticas nos dias em que vai caminhar. Existncia ou no, de eventos relacionados com rallys, motocross oucaa, nas zonas onde pretende caminhar.

Deve ainda ter ateno os seguintes aspetos: Levar sempre gua consigo e ter alimentos de reserva, nomeadamentebarras energticas.

Utilizar calado e vesturio apropriado para caminhadas, tendo em con-siderao que o terreno irregular, na sua maioria em terra-batida, ecom desnveis acentuados. O vesturio deve ser confortvel e adaptados condies climticas.

Alguns equipamentos teis: bastes de caminhada, lanterna, culos desol, protetor solar, chapu, GPS, bssola, telemvel, canivete.

Dependendo da intensidade da caminhada a realizar, aconselha-se a le-var um pequeno estojo de cuidados mdicos, onde deve incluir: pensosrpidos contra bolhas nos ps, pomada para dores musculares, pomadacontra picadas de insetos.

Levar algum tipo de cartograa auxiliar, nomeadamente o mapa do per-curso ou da regio atravessada.

Escala de Grau de difculdadeO grau de diculdade engloba alguns parmetros, nomeadamente: a ex-tenso do setor; o tipo de piso e o declive. A cada setor foi atribudo umgrau de diculdade dentro da seguinte escala:

where you want to walk.

Yu suld ls y ei : You should always carry water and have a food reserve, including energy bars. Use appropriate footwear and clothing for walking, taking into account that

the ground is irregular, mostly in land-beat and accented gaps. The clothingshould be comfortable and appropriate for the weather conditions.

Some useful equipment: trekking poles, ashlight, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat,GPS, compass, cell phone, pocket knife.

Depending on the intensity of walking to be done, it is advisable to carry asmall medical care kit which should include: sticking plasters against blisters,medicine for muscle pain, medicine against insect bites.

Bring some type of auxiliary mapping, including the path map or the map ofthe region.

Descrio do ItinerrioA Via Algarviana inicia-se junto ao cais de Alcoutim, atravessa a vila e diri-ge-se para Norte. Interceta uma pequena rota pedestre durante cerca de300 metros, divergem para depois se voltarem a encontrar por mais cercade 300m e divergirem para no mais se cruzar. Este setor desenvolve-se,inicialmente, ao longo do Rio Guadiana, por um caminho plano, a baixa alti -tude, durante o qual se pode apreciar a beleza do vale por onda passa estegrande curso de gua. A paisagem dominada especialmente por pomaresde sequeiro (amendoeiras, gueiras, oliveiras), muitos deles ainda ativos.Utilizando sempre o caminho principal, o percurso em breve se afasta do

rio e se orienta para Oeste at alcanar Cortes Pereiras. A entrada no mon-te faz-se por um caminho pouco utilizado, ladeado por antigos muros depedra. Deste local, o caminhante segue para Norte, atravessando o monte,e posteriormente para Oeste/Noroeste, cruzando a estrada nacional 1054.Os Menires do Lavajo iro em breve cruzar-se com o percurso, que dasegue para Sudoeste, at Afonso Vicente. Neste pequeno monte, encon-tramos antigas habitaes, algumas ainda em xisto, pequenas hortas tradi-cionais ladeadas por valados, muito tpicos na regio. Seguindo para Sul, ocaminho cruza a estrada municipal (EM) 507, mantm-se no trilho principale entra numa rea de extensos povoamentos orestais, onde o relevo mais acentuado.Aps vrias subidas e descidas em direo a Sul, o percurso chega ao Bar-ranco do Alcoutenejo, que a jusante se ir unir ao Barranco dos Ladres eformar a Ribeira dos Cadavais. Da, quase sempre em direo a Sudeste,o caminho segue at Corte Tabelio, atravessa a povoao e desce depoisat ao Barranco dos Ladres. Pelo itinerrio principal, sentido Sudeste, embreve surge no horizonte Corte Seda. Chegando povoao, segue-se pe-los arruamentos at EN 122-1 de acesso a Alcoutim.Aps cruzar a estrada, o percurso continua para Sul, atravessando peque-nos barrancos e linhas de gua, at chegar ao Torneiro onde se cruza commais uma pequena rota pedestre, devidamente sinalizada. Daqui, ambosos percursos coincidem at chegar a Balurcos, terminando assim o primei-ro setor da Via Algarviana.

bend away from the river, heading west to Corte Pereiras. Entering the town ona disused track anked by old stone walls, the hikers will head north, crossingthis group of houses and continuing west-northwest till they cross the EN1054.Heading southwest to Afonso Vicente, the Via Algarviana track will soon intersectwith the Lavajo menhirs. At the small village, we nd houses, some of which aremade from schist, and small traditional kitchen-gardens surrounded by hedgesand ditches typical of the area. Heading south, the path crosses the EM507,and keeps to the main track, till it enters an extensive forest area, where theterrain is steeper.Going south, after several uphill and downhill stretches, the track reaches Bar-ranco do Alcoutenejo and joins Barranco dos Ladres further downstream, to

form the Ribeira dos Cadavais. From there on, going mainly southeast, the track

heads towards Corte Tabelio. It crosses the village and goes down to Barrancodos Ladres. Going along the main route heading southeast, Corte Seda willsoon appear on the horizon. On reaching the village follow the streets in thedirection of the EN122-1 towards Alcoutim.

After crossing the road, the track continues south, crossing narrow ravines andwater courses, till it reaches Monte Torneiro, where a regional path is marked(PR). From here, both paths merge until they arrive at Balurcos, thus ending the

rst section of the Via Algarviana.

Das vrias espcies de aves que podem ser avistadas ao longo do percur-so, destaque para a guia-perdigueira (Aquila fasciata), o Bufo-real (Bubobubo), o Solitrio (Cercothricas galactotes), o Papa-gos (Oriolus oriolus), aAndorinha-durica (Cecropis daurica)ou o Charneco (Cyanopica cyanus).

Nos mamferos, destaque para a presena de Lontra (Lutra lutra)queembora seja muito dicil de avistar, os seus excrementos asseguram asua presena, e diversas espcies de morcegos como o Morcego-rato-grande (Myotis myotis)e o Morcego-de-peluche (Miniopterus schreibersii).

Descrio do ItinerrioO 2 setor da Via Algarviana inicia-se em Balurcos, pequena povoao doConcelho de Alcoutim. Do centro desta povoao, o itinerrio conduz ocaminhante para Sul, por caminhos rurais, muito deles ladeados por mu-ros, que delimitam as pequenas propriedades onde ainda se mantm ativaalguma agricultura de subsistncia. O percurso decorre numa regio ini-cialmente pouco acidentada, mas que em breve comea a revelar os traostpicos da serra algarvia, com os seus numerosos barrancos e linhas degua. Aps a passagem junto do IC127, a paisagem comea pontualmentea salientar a presena da Ribeira da Foupana, o principal curso de gua

desta regio e um dos mais bem preservados em todo o Algarve. A passa-gem por Palmeira revela, novamente, a arquitetura tradicional do mundorural, com destaque para a presena dos tpicos fornos de lenha, das casaspintadas com cal e das hortas ladeadas por valados. A paisagem alter-nada entre reas orestais e densos estevais e, em breve, a Via Algarvianaatinge a Foupana, junto ao antigo moinho de gua Moinho da Rocha doCorvo. Apesar da sua incontestvel importncia no passado, hoje no mais do que um conjunto de runas.A passagem pela ribeira uma aventura saudvel e uma boa oportunidadede descanso, no entanto necessrio ter ateno ao seu caudal antes dea atravessar para a outra margem, em altura de chuvas intensas pode tor-nar-se intransponvel. Aps esta travessia, o percurso entra num bosquede azinho, com maior densidade de coberto arbustivo, chegando depois aCorte Velha, outro povoado serrano. Aqui, a agricultura e a pastorcia aindaso as atividades dominantes, traduzindo-se numa paisagem com vestgiosda cultura de cereais e pastagens. Vrios moinhos de vento surgem nohorizonte, hoje todos eles abandonados e em runas.O percurso atinge um depsito de gua no topo de uma colina, desce poruma rampa empedrada e entra na Rua do Fontanrio at EN505, o prin-cipal acesso de Furnazinhas. Este o centro deste belo monte serrano,terminando aqui o segundo setor da Via A lgarviana.

Foupana stream (Ribeira da Foupana), the main stream in this area, and one ofthe best preserved in the whole Algarve. Passing through Palmeira, traditionalarchitecture can be enjoyed here again. Typical wood ovens, lime washed hous-es, and small walled kitchen-gardens are worth as features of true country life.The landscape goes from young forests to dense Cistus [rockrose] areas andthe Via Algarviana reaches Foupana, at the old Moinho da Rocha do Corvowatermill. Despite its undeniable importance in the past, today it is only a ruin.Crossing the river is quite an adventure, and a good opportunity for a rest, how-ever it is necessary to pay attention to its ow before crossing to the other side intime of heavy rain can become impassable.

After this section, the path enters a Holm Oak forest, with denser vegetation,until it reaches Corte Velha, another small village. Here, agriculture and l ivestock

are still the dominant activity, creating a landscape of cereal crops and pas-ture. Several windmills appear on the horizon, all of them are now abandonedand in ruins.The track reaches a water tank on the top of the hill, and goes down a stoneramp into the Rua do Fontanrio (Fontanrio street) to the EN505, the principalaccess to Furnazinhas. In the centre of this beautiful area the 2 nd section of Via

Algarviana ends.

De caudal permanente, tambm a Ribeira de Odeleite possui umagrande variedade de fauna e ora, oferecendo panoramas nicos derara beleza.

Quem tambm merece especial ateno so os bosques de azinho(Quercus rotundifolia) e de sobro (Quercus suber)que nos presenteiamneste setor. Este o habitat de alguns mamferos, como a Lebre (Lepuscapensis)e o Coelho (Oryctolagus cuniculus), que por vezes se deixam avis-tar, e do Javali (Sus scrofa)e da Raposa (Vulpes vulpes)que j so espciesmais difceis de vislumbrar.

Nature Foupanas river is one of the best preserv river in the Algarve, with their dense

vegetation with Ash Tree, Willow Tree and Oleander. With a permanent ow, also the Odeleites river has a big variety of ora andfauna, oering a unique view of rare beauty.

Who also deserve special attention are the forest of Holm Oak (Quercus rotun-difolia) and Cork Oak (Quercus suber) that present us in this sector.

This is the habitat of some mammals, such as Hare (Lepus capensis) andthe Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), which sometimes leave sighting, and WildBoar (Sus scrofa) and Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) are species that have moredicult to glimpse.

Sector 3 Descrio do Itinerrio em Furnazinhas que se inicia o 3 setor da Via Algarviana. Aps atra-vessar o monte rumo a Norte, o itinerrio conduz o caminhante por umapaisagem acidentada, com descampados, pastagens, extensos estevais e,pontualmente, pequenas hortas ainda em uso pelos locais. O relevo aci-dentado e entrecortado por vrias linhas de gua, de pequena dimenso.Surgem, ocasionalmente, pequenos povoamentos de pinhal bravo. O cami-nhante ir encontrar pequenos aglomerados habitacionais, alguns quasedesabitados, como o caso de Monte Novo, junto da estrada nacional, umdos locais mais elevados da zona (215m). Segue-se Monte das Preguias,

onde existe uma pequena barragem e um excelente ponto de observaoda regio, Malfrades, onde ainda podemos encontrar algumas casas comtraa tradicional, e, por m, Vaqueiros, sede de freguesia.Vaqueiros a aldeia mais povoada da sua freguesia e est construda sobreum povoado rabe, sendo mesmo a freguesia que apresenta o maior n-mero de ncleos habitacionais em Alcoutim, cujos topnimos comprovama existncia de comunidades rurais na poca rabe. Aqui tambm existemmuitos vestgios arqueolgicos romanos, ligados mineralogia. Grandeparte da populao possui uma horta onde cultiva, ao longo do ano, o quelhe vai sendo necessrio, os seus terrenos acabam assim por ser o seusupermercado, suprimindo alguma da necessidade de se deslocar recor-rentemente cidade.

Route DescriptionThe 3rd section of the Via Algarviana starts in Furnazinhas. After crossing thevillage heading North, the route leads the hiker along steep tracks, with open

elds, pastures, extensive areas of Cistus (rockrose) and, every now and then,small kitchen-gardens, still in use by local people. The terrain is steep, and thetrack crosses several streams. Occasional maritime pine plantations appear onthe way. The hiker will nd small groups of houses, some of which are practi-cally abandoned, like Monte Novo, by the main road, set in one of the areashighest points (215m). Sector 4 Descrio do ItinerrioInicia-se em Vaqueiros o 4 setor da Via Algarviana. Aps atravessar estapovoao, o percurso conduz o caminhante para Sudoeste, dando-lheoportunidade de contemplar pequenas hortas tradicionais, delimitadaspor antigos muros de pedra e linhas de gua. Ao longo do itinerrio, a pai-sagem dominada por densas reas cobertas de estevas (Cistus sp.) e pon-tuais povoamentos de pinheiro-manso, conhecidos localmente por pro-

jetos uma vez que os proprietrios receberam nanciamento para a suaimplementao. O relevo acidentado e rico em miradouros naturais depaisagem. Nesta viagem, o caminhante ir passar em alguns pequenos e

simpticos aglomerados habitacionais, nomeadamente Monchique, Amo-reira, Casas Baixas e nalmente Cachopo. Em todas elas existem hortas emfuncionamento, poos de roda, casario tradicional e muros de pedra ouvalados a limitar os caminhos.A simpatia das pessoas que a vivem, do particular beleza a estes locais,onde as tradies rurais ainda esto bem presentes, vale a pena uma pe-quena paragem para falar com a afvel gente local. Os quintais e as hortasesto bem cuidados e a relao com a natureza bastante harmoniosa.O patrimnio construdo revela aspetos interessantes, como fontanrios,poos, noras, eiras e vrios pormenores arquitetnicos antigos. Nas CasasBaixas, o caminhante tem ainda ao seu dispor um centro de acolhimento,na antiga escola primria recuperada, onde pode pernoitar e descansar.A viagem para Cachopo muito aprazvel, desenrolando-se ao longo de umdenso bosque de sobreiral, com grande beleza natural. Cachopo constituio principal ncleo habitacional desta regio. Tem ainda nas suas casas ostraos tradicionais e a Igreja de Santo Estvo, localizada no centro, conhe-cida como lugar de peregrinao.

Route DescriptionThe 4thsection of Via Algarviana starts at Vaqueiros. After crossing the village, thetrack takes the hiker southwest, allowing a view of small traditional kitchen-gar-dens, bordered by old stone walls and streams. Along the route the scenery isdominated by dense areas of Cistus (Cistus sp.) and occasional Stone Pine plan-tations, locally known as projects as the owners received funding for its im-

plementation. The terrain is steep and rich in natural viewpoints of landscapes.On this journey, the hiker will pass by some small and appealing groups ofhouses like Monchique, Amoreira, Casas Baixas and, nally, Cachopo. In all ofthese the hiker can view small working farms, typical water- wheel wells, andtraditional houses with stone walls or hedges and ditches bordering the paths.The congeniality of the local people gives a particular charm to these places

where rural traditions are still present. Yards and kitchen-gardens are well caredfor, and the relationship with nature is very harmonious. The architectural her-itage shows some interesting features, such as fountains, wells, water-wheels,threshing oors and several architectural details from the distant past.

At Casas Baixas, the hiker can nd accommodation at the old restored Elemen-tary school, where it is possible to rest and spend the night.The journey to Cachopo is very pleasant, passing a dense Cork Oak forest, lledwith great natural beauty.Cachopo is the main center of population. Here, houses are of traditional con-struction and the Santo Estvo church, located in the village center, is a well-known attraction for pilgrims.

Sector 5 Descrio do ItinerrioO 5 setor oferece uma paisagem espetacular. Embora grande parte des-te setor tenha sido fustigado pelo grande incndio de 2012, o que dei-xou marcas que continuam visveis e que iro perdurar por alguns anos,a vegetao comea a regenerar-se. Aqui ter o prazer de caminhar emplena Serra do M ou do Caldeiro e da ser um dos percursos mais exi-gentes, com um relevo muito sinuoso e acidentado, com subidas que oiro elevar ao topo de onde conseguir ter vistas panormicas que no odeixaro indiferente e onde lhe apetecer respirar bem fundo, e nas desci-das encontrar as zonas de vales verdejantes e linhas de gua. Com inicio

no centro de Cachopo, rumo a ocidente, a sada da aldeia marcada poruma bela paisagem orestal, com grandes sobreiros e densos matos demedronheiros, urzes e estevas. Vrios aglomerados habitacionais serovisitados, como Currais, onde se comercializam alguns produtos tpicosda serra, incluindo aguardente de medronho e mel; Alcaria Alta, com umafascinante panormica sobre a serra e, posteriormente Castelo, onde sedestaca a arquitetura tradicional. Aps a passagem por este simptico localchega-se ribeira de Odeleite, um local de inegvel beleza natural, ondeo caminhante pode desfrutar de um merecido descanso, antes de iniciara longa ascenso at Parises. Parises um local de paragem obrigatriopara recompor as energias, e aqui que a Via Algarviana se cruza com aRota da Cortia, um projeto importante na regio em torno da valorizaoda cortia. Aqui poder ainda apanhar a Ligao 1 da Via Algarviana at bela vila de So Brs de Alportel, onde a tradio rainha e que merecebem uma visita! Em direo a Oeste, atravessam-se os Barrancos do Bufo,

Javali e o Corgo de Loul. Atinge-se o Cerro da Relva, onde a vista ampla:a Norte, os Montes Novos, a Este, Parises e a Oeste o Barranco do Velho. Ocaminho leva-nos para a foz da ribeira do Vale Formoso, auente da ribeirade Odeleite e mais tarde chega-se ao Barranco do Velho.Nesta povoao, a cortia tem elevado valor econmico. Vale bem a penaconhecer melhor a povoao, adquirir os produtos da terra, no restauran-te, no caf, na loja de artesanato e na destilaria de aguardente de medro-nho que a existe.

Starting in the centre of Cachopo and headswest, leaving the village, a beautiful forested landscape marks the way, withCork Oak trees, Strawberry Trees, Heathers and Cistus (rockroses). Several smallsettlements will be passed through like Currais, where some typical countryside

products are sold, including Medronho, rough brandy made from the fruit of theStrawberry Tree and honey. Alcaria Alta, with a fascinating view over the hills, willbe passed and, after that, Castelo. After going through this pleasant village, wereach the Odeleite stream, a place of undeniable natural beauty, where the hikermay enjoy a well-deserved rest before starting the long climb to Parises.

Parises is a place for a mandatory stop for replenishes the energies, and it ishere that the Via Algarviana intersects with Cork Route, a major project in theregion around the valorization of cork. Here you can still catch the Link 1 fromVia Algarviana to the beautiful small town of So Brs de Alportel, where tradi-tion is queen and which deserves a visit! Heading west, Barranco do Bufo, Javali,and Corgo de Lou are crossed. The hiker reaches Cerro da Relva, where there isa panoramic view: to the north one sees the Montes Novos, to the east Parises,and to the west Barranco do Velho. The path takes us to the Vale Amoroso riv-er-mouth, a tributary of the Odeleite river, and after that we reach Barranco doVelho. At this village, located in the middle of the Serra do Caldeiro, cork has asignicant economic value. Once here, it is worth getting to know this village a lit-tle better, and purchase local products at the restaurant, coee, and handicraftshop, or at the local medronho (rewater) distillery.

uma das reas mais importantes no Algarve para espcies emblemticascomo o Gato-bravo (Felis silvestris)e o Lince-ibrico (Lyns parina).

A vegetao natural constituda, entre muitas outras plantas, por den-sos bosques de sobreiro (Quercus suber), sob os quais se desenvolvemestevais (Cistus ladanifer), medronhais (Arbutus unedo ), urzais (Erica sp.),entre outras espcies.

Os sobreirais so das zonas mais ricas em biodiversidade, no concelhode So Brs de Alportel a extrao de cortia teve e continua a ter umaelevada importncia na economia local, sendo que a cortia que aqui extrada possui das melhores qualidades a nvel nacional.

Esta tambm uma zona importante para diversos mamferos, como aFuinha (Martes foina) ou o Texugo (Meles meles).

Nature Integrated on the Natura 2000 Network (Site Caldeiro PTCON0057), this

was one of the most important areas in the Algarve for emblematic specieslike the Wildcat (Felis silvestris) and the Iberian Lynx (Lyns parina).

The natural vegetation consists of, among many other plants, dense forests ofCork Oak (Quercus suber), under which grows Gum Cistus (Cistus ladanifer),Strawberry-tree (Arbutus unedo), Heather (Erica sp.), among other species.

The Cork Oak forest is one of the richest areas in terms of biodiversity; in the

municipality of So Brs de Alportel the cork extraction has high importancein the local economy, and the cork extracted here has some of the best qual-ities nationally.

This is also an important area for many mammals, such as the Beech Marten(Martes foina) or Badger (Meles meles).

Sector 6 Descrio do ItinerrioEste setor desenvolve-se, inicialmente, numa zona relativamente plana,passando junto do moinho de vento da Eira de Agosto, onde poder apre-ciar uma vista panormica sobre a serra e avistar at o litoral. Este umdaqueles locais que apelam a que faa uma pausa para apreciar a vistae respirar fundo! Vale a pena uma fotograa neste local, para mais tarderecordar Depois descer at ao Carrascalinho, ao longo de um barrancobastante arborizado e atrativo. Continuar a caminhar em plena Serra doCaldeiro, com passagem por densos sobreirais e ricos matagais mediter-rnicos, onde abundam os medronheiros, urzes e rosmaninhos.

A ribeira do Rio Seco merece paragem obrigatria para fazer uma pausa,comer um snack e se possvel refrescar os ps sentado na sua margem,este sem dvida um lugar para relaxar e apreciar. Podem ser apenas len-das, mas tal como dizem as palavras do poeta Antnio Aleixo: Pra mentiraser segura /E atingir profundidade,/Tem que trazer mistura/ Qualquercoisa de verdade. As lendas de Salir so um pedao desta gente, fazemparte do seu patrimnio cultural. Este tambm um dos melhores setorespara os amantes de orqudeas, na primavera, altura em que se encontramem orao, se estiver atento poder ver algumas espcies, sem grandediculdade. Neste setor surge tambm a Ligao 2 que liga a Via Algarvianaat Estao de caminhos de ferro de Loul.

Algarves barrocal, where the landscape changes into largely agricultural land.Going along walled paths and past small scattered houses, we reach Salir, themain population centre of the area and Loules largest civil parish. Salir is locat-ed in the Algarves Beira Serra (the transition from the Barrocal to the Serra)and establishes the connection between the Alentejo and the Algarve. It is anagricultural and forestry based civil parish, containing an invaluable historical

and natural patrimony, and an outstanding landscape. The villages origin islost in time, but there is a theory that it was inhabited by the Celts. Salir is alsosynonymous of mysticism, where the Moorish legends have endured throughoutthe ages... Dare to know the Legend of Moura Encantada, the Belt of Moura orComb of Gold. ticular importance for endemic ora and natural habitats. Highlight for or-chid species that occur here: Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera Huds.); Yellow BeeOrchid (Ophrys apifera Huds); Mirror Orchid (Ophrys speculum Link) or Na-ked Man Orchid (Orchis italica Bir.).

Salir Alte

Sector 7 Descrio do ItinerrioO 7 setor da Via Algarviana inicia-se em Salir, uma pequena povoao si-tuada no eixo central da EN124, onde as runas do castelo representam oelemento histrico mais relevante da povoao. O percurso desenvolve-semuitas vezes ladeado por antigos muros de pedra, que ainda limitam hor-tas e propriedades rurais, e atravessa alguns aglomerados habitacionais,tais como Almarginho, Cerro de Baixo e Cerro de Cima. Neste itinerrio, apresena de vrias noras e outros engenhos hidrulicos um dos pontosaltos do percurso, que assinalam a intensa atividade agrcola que a se pra-ticava no passado.

A Paisagem Protegida Local da Rocha da Pena encontra-se vista do ca-minhante ao longo de grande parte da primeira metade deste setor, esta um elemento forte na paisagem, com 479 metros de altitude, a pode-r encontrar cerca de 535 espcies de ora e muitas outras espcies defauna. Por aqui ainda perdura a famosa lenda do Gil da Pena! Desaa -mo-lo a tentar conseguir que um dos locais lhe conte esta famosa lenda.Aceita o desao? O itinerrio atravessa Benam, uma povoao que man-tm a traa tradicional nas suas casas e ruas estreitas. Aproveite para fazeruma pausa num dos cafs locais.Da o percurso segue para Norte, passando por vrios pomares de sequei-ro, caractersticos do Barrocal Algarvio, e chega ribeira do Freixo, onderuma a oeste. Aqui, a atividade agrcola e o pastoreio ainda impem assuas marcas na paisagem, outrora com peso relevante na economia destaregio. O setor termina acompanhando a Ribeira de Alte, onde o cantardos muitos passeriformes a existentes sero uma autntica sinfonia paraos seus ouvidos! Chegar assim s Fontes Grande e Pequena, uma zonamuito agradvel para descansar e quase obrigatrio fotografar este localde beleza mpar. Mais adiante situa-se o centro de Alte, uma das povoaesmais tpicas e belas da regio que merece que se perca e se embrenhe pe-las suas ruas e ruelas, e que conhea os pequenos comrcios locais. Tudoem Alte cheiro a tpico e genuno!

Route DescriptionThis 7thsector of Via Algarviana starts at Salir, a village located in the middlesection of the EN124. The castle, now as a ruin, represents the most importanthistorical building of the village. The track often crosses by old stone walls en-closing kitchen-gardens and rural properties, and crosses some groups of hous-es, as Almarginho, Cerro de Baixo e Cerro de Cima. Throughout this section, the

presence of several water-wheels and other hydraulic devices makes the journeyinteresting, some notable signs of ancient agricultural practices.

The Rocha da Pena Local Protected Landscape is on the sight of the hiker, alongthe rst half of this section. This is a strong element in the landscape, with 479meters of altitude, and there you can nd about 535 species of ora and manyother species of fauna. Here still continues the famous legend of Gil da Pena! Wechallenge to try to nd out with local people this famous legend. Do you acceptthe challenge? The track passes through Benam, a small village of houses andnarrow streets where traditional architectural design can still be seen. Take abreak at one of the local cafes. From here, the track goes north, crossing severaldryfruit orchards, characteristic of the Algarves barrocal, and on reaching theFreixo stream, heads west.Here, agriculture and grazing still impose their mark on the landscape, once withheavy weight in the economy of this region.

The sector ends following the Alte stream, where the singing of many birds ex-isting there will be an authentic symphony to your ears! Upon arrival at FonteGrande (Large spring) and Fonte Pequena (Small spring), there is very nicearea to rest and it is almost obligatory to photograph this place of unique beauty.Some meters ahead we reach Alte village centre, one of the most typical andbeautiful villages of this region in which you deserve to be lost and immerse thestreets and alleys of this village, and getting to know the small local business. Allin Alte, smell at typical and genuine!

A Paisagem Protegida Local Rocha da Pena, que avistar, um monu-mento geolgico de extraordinria beleza, rica em grutas e escarpas. De

salientar muitas espcies de fauna, de elevada importncia, nomeada-mente o Morcego-de-peluche (Miniopterus schreibersii)e o Morcego-rato-pequeno (Myotis blythi)que se encontram vulnerveis e em perigo.

Os pomares de sequeiro marcam a paisagem deste setor, rodeados devalados, outrora o grande sustento da economia tradicional algarvia, in-felizmente atualmente muitos deles ao abandono.
