Depois de vários anos encerrada, a sede do núcleo regional da Quercus – a maior organização ambiental Portuguesa – abriu de novo no passado dia 27 de Outubro. Um grupo de 5 novos voluntários quer recuperar a dinâmica que a Quercus já teve na região (em fi nais dos anos 90). Estão já a preparar um calendário de actividades a divulgar muito em breve. Com cerca de 700 sócios no Algarve, a Quercus quer reorganizar uma rede de voluntários ambientalistas para dar resposta às denuncias que ainda continuam a chegar. Falámos com o professor e biólogo Nuno Sequeira, presidente da Direcção Nacional da Quercus, que está entusiasmado com o novo fôlego do núcleo algarvio.

After being closed for several year, the Quercus headquarters - the largest Portuguese environmental organization - opened again on 27th October. A group of 5 young volunteers want to regain the momentum that Quercus had in the region (in the late 90s). They are already preparing an activity agenda to be published very soon. With 700 registred members in the Algarve, Quercus want to reorganize a network of volunteers to respond to environmental complaints that are still being made. We spoke with teacher and biologist, Nuno Sequeira, president of the board of Quercus, who is enthusiastic about the new breath of fresh air in their Algarve branch.

Nachdem der Sitz der Regionalgruppe der größten portugiesischen Umweltschutzorganisation „Quercus“ einige Jahre geschlossen war, wurde er am 27. Oktober wiedereröffnet. Eine neue fünfköpfi ge Freiwilligengruppe will die einstige Dynamik wiederbeleben, die „Quercus“ in der Region auszeichnete (Ende der 1990er Jahre). Es wird bereits ein Veranstaltungskalender vorbereitet, der demnächst veröffentlicht werden soll. Mit seinen etwa 700 Mitgliedern in der Algarve, will „Quercus“ ein Netzwerk freiwilliger Umweltaktivisten reorganisieren, um auf die vielen eingehenden Anzeigen reagieren zu können. Wir sprachen mit dem Professor und Biologen Nuno Sequeira, dem Vorstandsvorsitzenden von „Quercus“, der über den frischen Wind bei der Regionalgruppe der Algarve begeistert ist.

Miguel Freitas, o deputado do PS/Algarve diz que é “inadmissível” e que para o ano, “pode estar em causa o regular funcionamento de alguns municípios”. A Câmara de Aljezur, exemplificou, “vai ter menos 250 mil euros, e isso significa ter, ou não, dinheiro para substituir os dois autocarros, com mais de 16 anos, que fazem o transporte dos alunos”. Outra das situações consideradas “dramáticas” para as autarquias é o facto de o OE obrigar à redução de 2% do número de trabalhadores, abrindo assim caminho para mais desemprego.

Die Sozialversicherung hat ihre Zweigstellen in Quarteira, Vila do Bispo, Castro Marim und São Bartolomeu de Messines geschlossen. Zunächst betrifft die Schließung nur die Kassenstellen (Ein- und Auszahlungen), während die übrigen Dienste aufrechterhalten werden. Die Schließungen erfolgen in einer Zeit, in der ein stärkerer Zustrom erwartet wird, weil zwischen 1. November und 20. Dezember, für Unternehmen und Einzelpersonen, die neuen Regelungen für den Ausgleich von Schulden beim Fiskus und bei der Sozialversicherung in Kraft treten. Nutzer ohne Internetanschluß müssen sich künftig nach Aljezur oder Lagos (im Fall von Vila do Bispo), Vila Real de Santo António (Castro Marim), Loulé oder Faro (Quarteira) oder Silves (Messines) begeben.

A Segurança Social encerrou serviços em Quarteira, Vila do Bispo, Castro Marim e São Bartolomeu de Messines. Para já, o fecho afecta apenas a Tesouraria (pagamentos e recebimentos), mantendo-se as restantes funções. O fecho ocorre numa altura em que se prevê uma maior afluência de pessoas, por estar em vigor, entre 1 de Novembro e 20 de Dezembro, o novo regime de regularização de dívidas ao Fisco e à Segurança Social, para empresas e pessoas singulares. Os utentes que não tenham acesso à internet, terão que deslocar-se agora a Aljezur ou Lagos (no caso de Vila do Bispo), Vila Real de Santo António (Castro Marim), Loulé ou Faro (Quarteira) e Silves (Messines).

Há seis escolas na região cujas obras, da responsabilidade da empresa pública «Parque Escolar», estão paradas ou bastante atrasadas. Nas escolas Secundárias de Loulé e Silves, os trabalhos estão parados e as obras só deverão estar finalizadas no ano lectivo 2014/15. Particularmente grave é o caso das secundárias de Vila Real de Santo António e João de Deus (Liceu), em Faro, onde as obras, que começaram em 2010, se arrastam a um ritmo lento. Nestes dois estabelecimentos, os estudantes dizem que os contentores provisórios onde têm aulas estão “degradados” e, em alguns, “chove lá dentro”. Em ambas as escolas não há espaço para Educação Física, nem refeitório que permita responder às necessidades dos quase mil alunos de cada estabelecimento.

Die Schüler der beiden Institutionen sagen, die provisorischen Container in denen der Unterricht stattfindet, seien „heruntergekommen“ und in einigen „regnet es herein“. In beiden Schulen gibt es weder einen Raum für den Sportunterricht, noch eine Schulkantine, die den Bedürfnissen der jeweils fast eintausend Schüler gerecht wird.

As obras no auditório da Fortaleza de Sagres já começaram este mês. Foram adjudicados por cerca de 74 mil euros e irão durar mês e meio. Incluem intervenções nos pavimentos, tectos, vãos, escadas, execução de balcão de bengaleiro e de palco, instalações eléctricas, rede de incêndios e climatização. Em breve, o espaço ficará apto a receber eventos como seminários, conferências, palestras e outros. Estas obras fazem parte de um conjunto de 23 acções da primeira fase do projecto de requalificação do monumento nacional mais visitado no país. Cerca de 80 por cento já está concluído. A segunda fase engloba um investimento de 3,9 milhões de euros e está prevista decorrer de Janeiro de 2014 a Junho de 2015.

A AdA vende a água aos municípios por 0,47 euros por metro cúbico, sendo depois cada autarquia a fixar o valor cobrado ao consumidor. A empresa fornece anualmente, em média, 66 milhões de metros cúbicos de água (31 milhões de euros/ano). As reservas de água existentes nas barragens do Algarve são suficientes para abastecer a região, mesmo que não chova, durante dois anos.

Celestino Ruivo, researcher at the University of Algarve (UAlg) is working on a dehumidifier that allows the use of solar energy systems in air conditioning systems. It is a hygroscopic wheel (that absorbs moisture) and functions as the heart of the air treatment system, allowing to cool the various sections of the same building. The system saves on electricity consumption and can be designed to work in other solar equipment. “In the south of the country this would be more successful as there are many hours of sunshine during most days of the year,” said Celestino Ruivo, teacher for over 20 years in Ualg. During last summer, he spent two months in a laboratory in Australia studying the system. The work was done in conjunction with the Australian, Mark Goldsworthy.

Celestino Ruivo, Wissenschaftler an der Universidade do Algarve (UAlg), arbeitet an einem solarbetriebenen Luftentfeuchter, der die Nutzung von Solarenergie für den Betrieb von Klimaanlagen ermöglichen soll. Es handelt sich um ein hygroskopisches Rad (das die Feuchtigkeit absorbiert) und im Grunde wie eine Klimaanlage funktioniert, die es erlaubt mehrere Räume eines Gebäudes gleichzeitig zu kühlen. Das System ermöglicht eine maßgebliche Verringerung des Stromverbrauchs und kann so gebaut werden, dass es mit anderen Solargeräten gemeinsam betrieben wird. „Im Süden des Landes ist dies eine zuverlässige Lösung, weil die Anzahl der Sonnenstunden im Jahr dort sehr hoch ist“, erklärt Celestino Ruivo, der seit mehr als 20 Jahren Professor an der UAlg ist. Im letzten Sommer verbrachte er drei Monate in einem australischen Labor, um das System zu erforschen. Die Arbeit entstand gemeinsam mit dem Australier Mark Goldsworthy.

Celestino Ruivo, investigador da Universidade do Algarve (UAlg) está a estudar um desumidificador de ar que permite a utilização da energia solar em sistemas de ar condicionado. Trata-se de uma roda higroscópica (ou seja, que absorve a humidade) que funciona como o coração do sistema de tratamento de ar, permitindo arrefecer vários espaços de um edifício. O sistema permite poupar bastante no consumo de electricidade e pode ser desenhado para funcionar em outros equipamentos solares. “No Sul do país é uma aposta mais fiável porque há muitas horas de sol, durante mais dias por ano”, explica Celestino Ruivo, professor há mais de 20 anos na Ualg. Durante o último verão, passou dois meses num laboratório da Austrália a estudar o sistema. O trabalho foi feito em conjunto com o australiano Mark Goldsworthy.

It is just a small kiosk in the center of Faro, near to the Estádio Farense. In the past it was broken into so many times, that the volunteers had to give up and close the doors. Some moved away for various reasons and Quercus eventually ceased to be active in the Algarve. What about now?

“For us the Algarve center has a strategic value because it is important to the country, not only because it is an area where there have been many problems over the years in terms of land use, but also because it is an area that continues to have very important natural value,” says Nuno Sequeira.

“It is important for us to open regional headquarters, especially in the district capitals, or nearby. An open door, where members and the general public can turn to for information, participate in activities, and can also collaborate in the centre’s daily activities, “he adds.

The interior of the small centre still has all the activities on file dating back to the late 90’s, and the beginning of 2000, in the Algarve. Complaints, participation in environmental impact studies, press clippings. Why not continue?

“I think it is a problem that not only has to do with Quercus or with their own associations for the defense of the environment. I think it is a problem that can be seen at a general level, across the country, in all kinds of associations. It is hard to get volunteers, “he laments.

We will also have initiatives aimed more at the general public, such as field trips and we will also focus on biodiversity, with some initiatives to protect a natural heritage that exists in the Algarve. And practical activities to draw people closer to the centre,” he says.

É apenas um pequeno quiosque no centro de Faro, junto ao Estádio do Farense. No passado foi assaltado tantas vezes, que os voluntários da altura tiveram de desistir e fechar portas. Alguns afastaram-se por vários motivos e a Quercus acabou por arrefecer a actividade no Algarve. E agora?

“Para nós o núcleo do Algarve tem uma importância estratégica porque insere-se numa zona muito importante para o país, onde têm existido muitos problemas ao longo dos anos ao nível do ordenamento do território, mas também porque é uma zona que continua a ter valores naturais muito importantes”, explica Nuno Sequeira.

“É importante para nós termos sedes regionais abertas, sobretudo em capitais de distrito, ou locais próximos, uma porta aberta, onde os sócios e os cidadãos em geral se possam dirigir para procurar informações, participar nas actividades, e poderem colaborar também nas actividades diárias do núcleo”, acrescenta.

O interior da pequena sede ainda guarda um arquivo que regista a intensa actividade que a Quercus teve no final dos anos 1990, princípios dos anos 2000, no Algarve. Denuncias, participações em estudos de impacte ambiental, recortes de imprensa. Porque não continuaram?

“Julgo que é um problema que não tem apenas a ver com a Quercus ou com as próprias associações de defesa do ambiente. Penso que é um problema que se nota a nível geral, em todo o país, em todo o tipo de associações. Há realmente uma crise no voluntariado”, lamenta.

“Penso que no Algarve, o que aconteceu é que apesar de haver algumas actividades pontuais, o núcleo não teve a dinâmica que nós gostaríamos. Por várias razões, pelo facto de não terem surgido dirigentes novos, pelo facto de algumas pessoas terem-se deslocado para outras partes por razões profissionais. Isto às vezes basta um pequeno grupo, no fundo, a dar o mote. Temos vários sócios activos no Algarve, sabemos que há pessoas de toda a Europa a residir aí e que estão bastante sensibilizadas para as questões ambientais. Tenho esperança que com este ressurgimento do núcleo possam agora dar também a sua contribuição para fazermos melhor trabalho em prol do ambiente”, explica.

Perguntamos ao dirigente, que podemos então esperar da Quercus a curto e médio prazo? “Temos algumas iniciativas que queremos fazer no Algarve, ao nível da educação ambiental, nomeadamente o projecto “80” que vai agora, por altura de Março/ Abril de 2014 ter o seu roadshow nacional. É um projecto dedicado à sustentabilidade que no fundo pretende junto das escolas do 3º ciclo e secundário, revitalizar o movimento associativo nas escolas, promovendo também a questão do voluntariado, da cidadania ambiental. Haverá aqui uma oportunidade para o núcleo do Algarve colaborar.

Es ist nur ein kleiner Kiosk im Zentrum von Faro in der Nähe des Fußballstadions von Farense. In der Vergangenheit wurde er so oft überfallen, dass die damaligen Freiwilligen aufgeben mussten und den Kiosk endgültig schlossen. Einige Aktivisten zogen sich aus verschiedenen Gründen ganz zurück und schließlich ruhten die Aktivitäten von „Quercus“ in der Algarve. Und heute?

“Für uns ist die Algarvegruppe strategisch wichtig, weil sie zu einer, für das Land sehr bedeutsamen Region gehört. In der Vergangenheit hat es dort im Lauf der Jahre sehr viele Probleme hinsichtlich der Raumordnung gegeben, es ist aber auch eine Zone, in der es weiterhin viele wichtige Naturschätze gibt“, erklärt Nuno Sequeira.

“Es ist wichtig für uns, dass unsere regionalen Geschäftsstellen geöffnet sind, vor allem in den Hauptstädten der Regionen oder in der näheren Umgebung, wo die Mitglieder und die Bürger hingehen können, um Informationen zu bekommen, an den Aktivitäten teilzunehmen oder aber um sich an der täglichen Arbeit in der Geschäftsstelle zu beteiligen“, fügt er hinzu.

Im Inneren des Vereinssitzes gibt es immer noch ein Archiv, wo die intensiven Aktivitäten der „Quercus“ Ende der 1990er und Anfang der 2000er Jahre in der Algarve dokumentiert sind: Anzeigen, die Beteiligung an einer Studie über Umweltauswirkungen, Presseausschnitte. Warum wurde damals nicht weitergemacht?

“Ich denke, das Problem hatte nicht nur mit “Quercus” zu tun, oder mit anderen Umweltschutzorganisationen. Ich denke, es war ein allgemeines Problem, das im ganzen Land und bei Vereinen verschiedenster Art zu beobachten war. Es gab wirklich eine allgemeine Krise hinsichtlich ehrenamtlicher Tätigkeit“, bedauert er.

„Ich glaube in der Algarve geschah Folgendes: Es gab einige punktuelle Aktionen, aber ansonsten hat die Gruppe aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht mehr die einstige Dynamik entwickelt: Es gab keine neuen Führungspersönlichkeiten und einige Leute mussten aus beruflichen Gründen umziehen. Im Grunde reicht manchmal schon eine kleine Gruppe, die die Sache in die Hand nimmt. Wir haben viele aktive Mitglieder in der Algarve, wir wissen, dass dort Menschen aus ganz Europa leben und das diese für Umweltfragen stark sensibilisiert sind. Ich habe die Hoffnung, dass auch sie nach der Wiederbelebung der Regionalgruppe ihren Beitrag leisten, damit eine gute Arbeit für den Umweltschutz geleistet werden kann“, erklärt er.

Wir fragten den Vorsitzenden, was wir kurz und mittelfristig von “Quercus” erwarten dürfen? „Wir planen einige Initiativen in der Algarve hinsichtlich der Umwelterziehung, insbesondere das Projekt „80“ – eine Roadshow, die im April/Mai 2014 im Land unterwegs sein wird. Dieses Nachhaltigkeitsprojekt will in den dritten Klassen und in der Sekundarstufe den Gemeinschaftssinn der Schüler wiederbeleben und auch für Fragen des Ehrenamts und des Umweltschutzes als Bürgerpflicht werben. Hier hat die Regionalgruppe der Algarve Gelegenheit, sich aktiv zu beteiligen. Außerdem setzen wir auf das Thema Artenvielfalt mit einigen Aktionen zum Schutz von einigen in der Algarve existierenden Kostbarkeiten der Natur.

Vamos ter também iniciativas mais viradas para o público em geral, como saídas de campo. Também vamos apostar na biodiversidade, com algumas acções para proteger algum património natural que existe no Algarve. E actividades práticas que consigam trazer as pessoas para perto do núcleo”, revela.

“Infelizmente há questões que continuam a surgir no Algarve e que têm a ver com o ordenamento do território. Continuam a chegar-nos denúncias ambientais, por uma má utilização do solo. Portanto, vamos continuar a estar atentos e a participar nas consultas públicas de projectos que nós consideremos com impacto para o território”, diz.

Um exemplo é o mega-empreendimento previsto para os Salgados. “Continuamos preocupados, claro que sim. É mais um projecto que não se percebe. Com um modelo de desenvolvimento tão desordenado como aquele que se fez no Algarve nas últimas décadas, como é que se pode continuar a insistir nas mesmas receitas, em vez de protegermos devidamente aquele local? Achamos que não tem sentido nenhum, até do ponto de vista da estratégia para o território, hipotecar aquela zona, ou fazer algo que terá impactos negativos”, considera Nuno Sequeira.

Mais recentemente, a Quercus surpreendeu os algarvios ao manifestar-se contra o heliporto da Culatra, construído pela população, já que as autoridades não davam resposta.

“Acho que talvez não tenhamos sido suficientemente entendidos. Não pomos em causa a questão do socorro, o que nós dizemos é que em termos de ordenamento do território não é correcto avançar-se para uma obra da forma como se avançou. A Culatra é uma situação que nos preocupa porque sabemos que grande parte das habitações que lá existem é de génese ilegal. O Estado, mais cedo ou mais tarde, terá que tomar uma medida quanto a isso, até porque sabemos que com este cenário de alterações climáticas, são habitações que vão ficar em perigo, devido ao facto do nível do mar estar a subir. Mas a nossa preocupação é alertar as autoridades porque não podem ser abertos precedentes deste tipo. Até pode ser necessário o heliporto e se for feito, terá que ser dentro da legalidade”, justifica.

A questão da exploração de petróleo? “Sim, estamos logicamente preocupados. Neste momento ainda estamos a avaliar a situação porque as informações não são muitas. Em breve, vamos tomar posição em conjunto com outras ONG a exigir mais esclarecimentos e que sejamos informados sobre a realidade desse projecto”.

Uma última questão, a crise tem prejudicado o ambiente? “Os problemas ambientais parece que passam mais despercebidos porque temos a maior parte das notícias dominadas pela crise económica, financeira, política, a troika e anda tudo muito à volta disso. Os problemas do ambiente têm passado para segundo ou terceiro plano. E isso é um erro porque eles não vão desaparecer. Quanto mais tempo levarmos para actuar, pior será o prejuízo”, conclui.

A sede da Quercus em Faro vai estar aberta ao público todas as terças-feiras, durante a tarde.

“Unglücklicherweise tauchen immer wieder die gleichen Fragen im Zusammenhang mit der Raumordnung auf. Immer wieder erreichen uns Anzeigen wegen Umweltvergehen, weil Grund und Boden missbräuchlich genutzt wird. Deshalb werden wir weiterhin aufmerksam sein und uns an den öffentlichen Konsultationen von bestimmten Bauprojekten beteiligen, wenn wir glauben, diese könnten negative Auswirkungen auf das Territorium haben“, sagt er.

Ein Beispiel ist das Mega-Tourismusbauprojekt, das man in Salgados plant. „Wir sind deswegen natürlich immer noch beunruhigt. Es ist ein weiteres unverständliches Projekt. Wie kann man trotzdem weiterhin auf die gleichen Rezepte setzen, mit einer derart ungeordneten Bauplanung vor Augen, wie man sie in den letzten Jahrzehnten in der Algarve betrieben hat, statt diesen Ort sorgfältig zu bewahren und zu schützen? Wir glauben, es macht überhaupt keinen Sinn, auch hinsichtlich der Strategie für das Territorium nicht, dieses Gebiet zu belasten oder dort

irgendetwas zu machen, was negative Auswirkungen haben könnte“, glaubt Nuno Sequeira.

Erst kürzlich hat “Quercus” die Menschen in der Algarve überrascht, weil die Organisation gegen den Hubschrauberlandeplatz auf Culatra demonstriert hatte, der von der Bevölkerung gebaut worden war, weil die Behörden nicht auf Anfragen reagiert hatten.

“Ich glaube, man hat uns eventuell in dieser Sache nicht ganz richtig verstanden. Wir stellen nicht infrage, dass im Notfall Hilfeleistung möglich sein muss. Wir sind aber der Meinung, dass es im Zusammenhang mit der Raumordnung nicht korrekt ist, wenn Bauarbeiten, wie dort geschehen, unrechtmäßig ausgeführt werden. Die Situation auf Culatra macht uns Sorgen, weil wir wissen, dass ein Großteil der Häuser illegal entstanden sind. Der Staat wird früher oder später Maßnahmen ergreifen müssen. Schon wegen der Klimaveränderung sind die Häuser gefährdet, weil der Meeresspiegel steigt. Wir wollen die Behörden alarmieren,

damit keine Präzedenzfälle wie dieser geschaffen werden. Und wenn es notwendig ist, einen Hubschrauberlandeplatz zu bauen, dann sollte das im Rahmen der Legalität geschehen“, begründet er.

Und die Frage des Abbaus von Erdöl? „Ja, logischerweise machen wir uns deswegen Sorgen. Momentan sind wir noch dabei, die Lage einzuschätzen, weil es bisher kaum Informationen gibt. In Kürze werden wir zusammen mit anderen unabhängigen Nichtregierungs-Organisationen mehr Aufklärung fordern, damit man uns über die Realitäten dieses Projekts informiert.“

Eine letzte Frage: Hat die Krise der Umwelt geschadet? „Umweltprobleme bleiben eher unbeachtet, so scheint mir, weil der überwiegende Teil der Nachrichten von der ökonomischen, finanziellen und politischen Krise und von der Troika bestimmt wird, dreht sich alles nur darum. Die Umweltprobleme sind an zweite oder dritte Stelle gerückt. Aber das ist ein Fehler, weil sie nicht von selbst verschwinden werden. Je länger wir brauchen, um aktiv zu werden, um so größer werden die Schäden sein“, schließt er.

Die Geschäftsstelle von „Quercus“ ist jeden Dienstagnachmittag für die Öffentlichkeit geöffnet.

“Unfortunately there are issues that continue to arise in the Algarve and have to do with land use. We still receive environmental complaints about poor land use. Therefore, we will continue to be vigilant and to participate in the public consultations of the projects that we feel will have an impact in the territory, “he says.

One example is the mega-development planned for the Salgados. “We are still concerned, of course. It’s a project that is not understandable. With a development model as cluttered as the one which the Algarve has become in recent decades, how can we continue to insist on the same investments, instead of properly protecting that area? We feel it makes no sense at all, even from a strategic point of view for the territory, to mortgage that area, or something that will have a negative impact”, considers Nuno Sequeira.

More recently, Quercus surprised the Algarve when it opposed the Culatra helipad, built by the population, as the authorities would not respond to requests.

“I think perhaps we have not been sufficiently understood. We are not questioning emergency issues here, what we are stressing is that in terms of spatial planning is not correct to proceed they way they did. Culatra is a worrying situation because we know that most its homes are illegal. The state, sooner or later, will have to take measures to resolve this, because we know that climate change may put these dwellings in danger, due to the rising sea level. But our concern is to alert the authorities because they cannot be open to procedures of this kind. A heliport might be needed and if constructed has to be within the law”, he explains .

The issue of oil exploration? “Yes, of course we are concerned. At the moment we are still assessing the situation because we do not have much information. Soon, we will take a stand together with other NGOs to demand further clarification and to be properly informed about the reality of this project. “

One last question, has the financial crisis damaged the environment? “The environmental problems seem to go unnoticed because most of the news is about the economic and financial crisis, politics and Troika walking kind of all by pass it. Environmental problems have passed from second or third level. And this is a mistake they can’t make disappear. The longer we do not act, the worse the damage,” he concludes.

The headquarters of Quercus in Faro will be open to the public every Tuesday during the afternoon.

Marco Taylor nasceu em 1973. Depois fez-se homem. Foi director de turma diversas vezes, director de um festival de cinema de animação, dirigente associativo, fez mushing anos a fio, teve filhos, plantou algumas árvores para além de muitas outras coisas. Cresceu em Lisboa, mas mora no litoral alentejano, onde lecciona Educação Visual e Educação Tecnológica. Para completar a apresentação do livro, é possível ver, na sala polivalente da biblioteca, uma exposição composta por um várias ilustrações que integram a referida obra.

As we have often stressed in our roteiros, Almancil, over the last few years has, become host to some of the best restaurants in the region. Last month we heard that the Vale do Jardim was reopening with the same name, a new look, and under the management of Luís Duarte.

Luís and his wife, Monica Matias, spent more than 10 years working and living in England. Firstly as the managers of the famous London Club «Soho House», and later on at the «Babington House», in Somerset; considered one of the best Country House Hotels in the United Kingdom. Now, they have decided to return to their roots and invest in a family business, going against the general pessimism of others who are moving abroad.

We sat out on the lovely terrace, it was such a glorious sunny Autumn day. At lunch time there are always two special dishes of the day, consisting of fish or meat, for only 7€ including drinks. Of course, it is not the only restaurant in the Algarve with this kind of offer, but not all the other places are as special as this one. Both Luís and Monica wanted to make a difference and offer the same level of quality as an à la carte dinner. On offer that day was cordon bleu with gratin potatoes and sea bass in puff pastry. The presentation was perfect and the flavour was divine. Fresh produce together with the unquestionable talent of the chef, João Duarte (the owner’s brother) they are sure to turn this venture into a success. We just couldn’t resist a desert after seeing the works of art being taken to the tables. Créme Brulée with ginger and coconut ice cream. We even got a 10% discount voucher for next time. Jardim do Vale is open from Monday to Friday from 12 noon until 3pm and 7pm to 11pm. Saturdays from 7pm to 11pm. Closed Sundays.

Como muitas vezes já o sublinhámos nos nossos roteiros, Almancil tornou-se estes últimos anos num polo dos melhores restaurantes da região. O mês passado ouvimos falar da reabertura do restaurante Jardim do Vale. O nome ficou, mas mudou tudo o resto. Fomos recebidos pelo Luís Duarte, o proprietário. Ele e a mulher Mónica Matias, estiveram quase uma década a viver e trabalhar em Inglaterra. Primeiro como gerentes no famoso clube londrino «Soho House». Mais tarde também no «Babington House», em Somerset, considerado o melhor Country House Hotel do Reino Unido. Agora, decidiram voltar às suas raízes e apostar num negócio familiar local, e talvez contrariar os pessimistas deste país que só encorajam as pessoas a emigrarem. Optámos pela esplanada, já bem composta, num dia espectacular de sol de Inverno. À hora do almoço há sempre dois pratos especiais do dia, de peixe ou carne, por 7€, bebida incluída. Obviamente que não é o único restaurante do Algarve a oferecer esta opção, mas noutros lugares por este preço muitas vezes recebemos simplesmente uma travessa de comida, sem nada de especial a assinalar. O casal Luís e Mónica quiseram marcar a diferença e oferecer o mesmo nível de qualidade que um jantar à la carte. Na nossa visita havia cordon bleu com gratin de batatas e robalo em massa folhada. Apresentação perfeita e sabores extraordinários. Produtos frescos, aliados ao talento inquestionável do chef João Duarte (irmão do proprietário) prometem fazer desta aposta um sucesso garantido. Não resistimos em dividir uma sobremesa ao ver as obras de arte que chegaram às outras mesas. créme brulée de gengibre com gelado de coco. Ainda recebemos um desconto de 10% para um futuro jantar. Wie wir schon häufig in unseren Restaurantkritiken betont haben, ist Almancil in den letzten Jahren zu einem Zentrum einiger der besten Restaurants der Region geworden. Im vergangenen Monat erfuhren wir von der Wiedereröffnung des Restaurants Jardim do Vale. Der Name ist geblieben, alles andere hat sich verändert. Wir wurden von Inhaber Luís Duarte in Empfang genommen. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Mónica Matias hat er fast ein Jahrzehnt in England gelebt und gearbeitet – anfänglich als Geschäftsführer des legendären Londoner Klubs „Soho House“, später dann des “Babington House“ in Somerset, das als das beste Country House Hotel Englands gilt. Nun haben sie beschlossen zu ihren Wurzeln zurückzukehren und auf ein lokales Familienunternehmen gesetzt und damit den Pessimisten im Land, die die Menschen ermutigen ins Ausland zu gehen, etwas entgegengesetzt. Wir wählten an diesem wunderbar sonnigen Herbsttag einen Tisch auf der bereits gut besetzten Terrasse. Mittags gibt es jeweils zwei verschiedene Tagesgerichte – Fisch oder Fleisch für jeweils 7 €, ein Getränk ist im Preis inbegriffen. Natürlich ist dies nicht das einzige Restaurant in der Algarve mit einem solchen Angebot, aber häufig bekommt man dafür nur eine Platte mit einer Mahlzeit, die nicht der Rede wert ist. Das Ehepaar Luís und Mónica will hingegen den Unterschied hervorheben und bietet mittags die gleiche Qualität wie abends à la carte. Bei unserem Besuch gab es Cordon bleu mit Kartoffelgratin und Wolfsbarsch im Teigmantel. Perfekte Präsentation und ein außerordentlicher Geschmack. Frische Produkte und die Zubereitung mit dem unbestrittenen Talent von Küchenchef João Duarte (dem Bruder des Inhabers) versprechen, dass dieses Restaurant ein garantierter Erfolg wird. Nachdem wir die Kunstwerke gesehen hatten, die an den anderen Tischen serviert wurden, konnten wir nicht widerstehen und teilten uns ein Dessert: Crème brulée mit Ingwer und Kokosnuss-Eiscrème. Außerdem bekamen wir noch einen Gutschein für einen 10-prozentigen Rabatt bei unserem nächsten Besuch. Dankeschön und bis bald!

Das Jardim do Vale ist Montag bis Freitag von 12 – 15 Uhr und 19 bis 23 Uhr und am Samstag von 19 bis 23 Uhr geöffnet. Sonntags geschlossen.
