Carrión de los Condes (Palencia), is «the heart of the Way of Saint James», the geographic centre of the pilgrims’ route in Spain. The town holds a rich historical and artistic heritage, linked to the Camino, the most important pilgrimage route in Europe since the Middle Ages.
MUSEUMS
Contemporary Art Museum (Tourist Information Oce) In a building that once was the town pilgrims’ hostel. It became a private house in 1835 and was donated by Pilar García to the township for cultural use. It hosts permanent expositions of works by José Luis Valenciano, José María Delgado, Fernando Escobar and Emilio Barreda, as well as dierent temporary exhibitions every month. Inside you will find the Tourist Information Oce.
Santa Clara Museum Opened in 1987. It shows a collection of religious artworks and scluptures from the monastery where it is situaded as well as others now disappeared, such as Santa Isabel and San Francisco. It also boasts a collection of nativity scenes from all over the world, exhibited every year in December and January.
Santiago Museum. Sacred art Museum located in the emblematic church of Santiago since 1993. It shows a collection of religious art objects from Santa María Church belongings, from the old church of Santiago as well as small hermitages arround the town, San Juan de Cestillos and La Piedad.
CHURCHES
Santa María del Camino Church Built in Romanesque style arround 1130. It is the oldest church in Carrión. Its apse in baroque style was designed in 1685 by the architect Felipe Berrojo from Palencia.
Santiago Church Built in the 12th century. Home to a sacred art collection since 1993. Known for its outstanding front with an archivolt depicting figures working at dierent jobs and trades. The frieze above depicts the Final Judgement with the Christ the Teacher, the four Evangelists and the twelve apostles.
San Julián Church This parish church was completely renovated during the 16th and 17th centuries. Its simple front shows two family crests and an alcove with a wooden statue of San Julián on a pedestal. Inside is the statue of San Zoilo, patron saint of the town, as well as three baroque altarpieces with statues made by Pedro del Mazo Vélez, in 1706.
San Andrés Church Known as “the Cathedral of Carrión”. It was built on the previous ashlar chuch, designed by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, whose project was later changed by Juan de Escalante in 1561. It holds many artworks, including a baroque organ (1766) and an outstanding altarpiece of the Three Magi.
Nuestra Señora de Belén Church Houses the statue of the town’s other patron saint. It was built along the clis using stone and brick during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Its main altarpiece dates back to the 16th century with paintings on wood made by Antonio Calderón.
MONASTERIES AND CONVENTS
Royal Monastery of San Zoilo. Founded in the 11th century under the protection of the Carrión Counts. It boasts a beautiful Romanesque front in the church and two pieces of outstanding medieval tapestry, displayed in the sacristy. Its Reinassance cloister, built between 1534 and 1604, was designed by the architect Juan de Badajoz.
Santísima Trinidad Convent (Discalced Carmelites) Founded in 1930 by the Discalced Carmelites adn rebuilt in 1974 after a fire. The building, designed by the architect Carlos Rivera, has a chapel decorated with works by Victor de los Ríos.
Royal Monastery of Santa Clara. Founded in 1255. Its church houses the statues of the Pietá and the Holy Christ by Gregorio Fernández. It is also a sacred art museum, which has been open to the public un 1987.
OTHER TOURIST ATRACTIONS
Carrión also has many historic civil buildings of varied styles, such as the Town Hall (1868), Sarabia Theatre (1927), the Eagle House, Girón House (17th c.), Lomana House, the Big House (19th c.), the House of the first Marquis of Santillana, the Lizard House and the former prison (16 th c.)
There are also other significant buildings such as Pieta Chapel (15th-16th c.), the Chapel of the Cross (16th, 17th, 19th c.), San Juan de Cestillos Chapel (18th) as well as Sánchez Arjona lookout, the Big Bridge (16th c.), the Medieval Wall and the stone road (14 th c.)

Carrión de los Condes se situe «au coeur du Chemin de Saint-Jacques». La ville constitue le centre géographique de la route jacobéenne en Espagne. Dans ses limites territoriales, Carrión accumule une grande richesse historique et artistique liée au Chemin de Saint-Jacques, la route de pèlerinage la plus importante de l'Europe depuis le moyen-âge.
MUSÉES
Musée d’art contemporain (Oce de tourisme). Situé dans l’ancien bâtiment où trouvait hôpital des pèlerins. Il a étè converti propiété privée en 1835 et fut légué par la suite a la mairie á des fins culturelles. Ill héberge aujourd’hui des expositions permanentes de José Luis Valenciano, José María Delgado, Fernando Escobar et Emilio Barreda, ainsi que diverses expositions périodiques mensuelles. A l’intérieur de cet édifice trouve aussi l’oce de tourisme.
Musée de Santa Clara. Inauguré en 1987. Sont exposés, en majorité, diverses pièces venant du monastère Santa Clara et d’anciens couvents disparus aujourd’hui, comme celui de Santa Isabel ou San Francisco. On y retrouve aussi la collection de crèche provenant du monde entier, qui s’expose annuellement entre les mois de décember et de janvier.
Musée de Santiago. Le musée de l’art sacré siitué á l’intérieur de l’église Santiago depuis 1993, abrite des pièces provenan, en grande majorité, des founds artistiques de l’église de Santa Maria, de Satiago, et des ermitages de San Juan de Cestillos et de la Piedad.
ÉGLISES
Eglise de Santa Maria del Camino. Eglise de style roman, construite jusqu’en 1130; elle est l’église la plus ancienne de Carrión. Elle possède un choeur de style baroque réalisé en 1685 par l’architecte palentin Felipe Berrojo.
Eglise de Santiago. Edifiée au XIIème siècle, elle abrite le musée d’art sacré depuis 1993. Elle est principalement connue pour sa façade avec son archivolte sculptée, qui représente divers métiers. La frise supérieure représente la scène du judgement finale avec un pantocrator, les quatre évangélistes sous la forme d’un tétramorphe et les 12 apôtres.
L’église San Julián. Rénovée complètement au XVIème et XVIIème siècle. Elle aborde une façade avec deux boucliers et une niche abritant une statue de San Julian de bois sobre sur un piédestal. On y trouve la statue de San Zoilo, patron de la ville, ainsi que trois retables baroques de 1706 réalisés par Pedro del Mazo Vélez.
L’Eglise San Andrés. Connue comme “la cathédrale de Carrión de los Condes”. Elle fût construite sur l’ancienne église en pierre de taille selon un project de Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, par la suite modifiée par Juan de Escalante en 1561. Dotée de plusieurs oeuvres d’art, entre celles qui soulignent le retable des Rois Mages et l’orgue baroque (1766).
Eglise de Nuestra Señora de Belén. Hébergeant l’image de la Sainte patrone du village. Elle fût construite en pierre et en brique aux XVème, XVIème et XVIIème siècles. Elle possède un retable majeur du XVIème siècle, avec pintures des bois réalisées par Antonio Calderón.
MONASTÈRES ET COUVENTS
Monastère de San Zoilo. Fondé au XIème siècle, it jouissait de la protection des comtes de Carrión. Il possède un très beau front roman dans son église et de magnifiques tapisseries médiévales à l’intérieur de son reliquaire. Son actuel cloître de la reinassance, construit entre 1537 et 1604, fût un project de l’architecte Juan de Badajoz.
Couvent de La Santísima Trinidad (Carmélites Déchaussées). Couvent fondé en l’an 1930 par les carmélites déchaussées. Il fût reconstruit en 1974 après un incendie. L’édifice, dessiné par l’architecte Carlos Rivera, possède une chapelle décorée d’oeuvres de Víctor de los Ríos.
Monastère de Santa Clara. Monastère fondé en l’an 1255. Son église abrite l’image de la pietà et du Saint Christ, oeuvres de Gregorio Fernandez. A l’intérieur se trouve le musée de l’art sacré, ouvert au public depuis 1987.
AUTRES LIEUX TOURISTIQUES
Carrión de los Condes possède en plus divers édifices civiles de diérents styles, comme la mairie (1868), le théâtre de Sarabie (1927), la maison de l’aigle, la maison des Girón (XVII), la maison des Lomana, la grande maison (XIX), la maison du primier marquis de Santillana, la maison du lézard ou l’ancienne prison (XVI).
Sont également distinguable l’ermitage de la vierge de la Piedad (XV-XVII), l’ermitage de la Cruz (XVI-XVII-XIX), et l’ermitage de San Juan de Cestillos (XVIII), ainsi que le belvédère Sánchez Arjona, le grand pont (XVI), les murailles médiévales et voie de pierre du XVIème siècle.

CARRIÓN DE LOS CONDES. (ESPAÑOL)
Carrión de los Condes (Palencia) se encuentra «en el corazón del Camino de Santiago», al ser el centro geográfico del desarrollo de la ruta jacobea en España. Atesora en sus límites territoriales una gran riqueza histórica y artística vinculada al Camino, la ruta de peregrinación más importante de Europa desde la Edad Media.
MUSEOS
Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Oficina de Información Turística). Situado en el edificio donde se encontraba el antiguo hospital de peregrinos. Se convirtió en propiedad privada en 1835 y fue donado al Ayuntamiento por Piedad García para usos culturales. Alberga las exposiciones permanentes de José Luis Valenciano, José María Delgado, Fernando Escobar y Emilio Barreda, así como diversas exposiciones periódicas mensuales. En este mismo edificio se encuentra la Oficina de Información Turística.
Museo de Santa Clara, Fue inaugurado en 1987. En el se exponen, en su mayoría, diversas piezas procedentes del monasterio en el que se ubica, y de antiguos conventos desaparecidos en la actualidad, como el de Santa Isabel o el de San Francisco. Es sede de la colección de belenes procedentes de todo el mundo, que se expone anualmente durante los meses de diciembre y enero.
Museo de Santiago. Museo de arte sacro situado en la iglesia de Santiago desde 1993, donde se conservan piezas procedentes, en su mayoría, de los fondos artísticos de la iglesia de Santa María, de la propia iglesia de Santiago y de las ermitas de San Juan de Cestillos y de la Piedad.
IGLESIAS
Iglesia de Santa María del Camino. Iglesia de estilo románico construida hacia el año 1130. Se trata de la iglesia más antigua de Carrión. Posee una cabecera de estilo barroco realizada en 1685 por el arquitecto palentino Felipe Berrojo.
Iglesia de Santiago. Iglesia edificiada en el siglo XII. Alberga el Museo de Arte Sacro desde el año 1993. Destaca por su fachada con una arquivolta figurada con representaciones de diversos oficios y gremios. El friso superior muestra una representación del Juicio Final con un pantocrátor, los cuatro evangelistas en forma antropomórfica y los doce apóstoles.
Iglesia de San Julián. Iglesia renovada por completo en los siglos XVI y XVII. Posee una fachada con dos escudos y una hornacina con la talla de San Julián de madera sobre un pedestal. Guarda la imagen de San Zoilo, patrono de la localidad, así como tres retablos barrocos con esculturas de 1706 realizadas por Pedro del Mazo Vélez.
Iglesia de San Andrés. Iglesia conocida como la “Catedral de Carrión de los Condes”. Se construyó sobre la anterior iglesia de piedra de sillería según un proyecto de Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, que fue modificado por Juan Escalante en 1561. Atesora múltiples obras de arte, entre la que destaca el retablo de los Reyes Magos y el órgano barroco (1766).
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Belén. Alberga la imagen de la patrona de la localidad. Fue construida en piedra y ladrillo durante los siglos XV, XVI y XVII. Posee un retablo mayor del siglo XVI, con pinturas sobre tabla realizadas por Antonio Calderón.
MONASTERIOS Y CONVENTOS
Real Monasterio de San Zoilo. Fundado en el siglo XI, gozó de la protección de los Condes de Carrión. Posee una bella portada románica en su iglesia y unas magníficas telas medievales en su relicario. Su actual claustro renacentista, construido entre 1537 y 1604, fue proyectado por el arquitecto Juan de Badajoz.
Convento de la Santísima Trinidad (Carmelitas Descalzas) Convento fundado en el año 1930 por las Carmelitas Descalzas. Fue reconstruodo en el año 1974 tras un incendio. El edificio, diseñado por el arquitecto Carlos Rivera, posee una capilla decorada con obras de Víctor de los Ríos.
Real Monasterio de Santa Clara. Monasterio fundado en el año 1255. Su iglesia ampara la imagen de la Piedad y el Santo Cristo, obras de Gregorio Fernández. Alberga el museo de arte sacro, abierto al público desde 1987.

Carrión de los Condes también posee diversos edificios civiles de variados estilos, como el Ayuntamiento (1868), el Teatro Sarabia (1927), la Casa del Águila, la Casa de los Girón (S. XVIII), La Casa de los Lomana, la Casa Grande (S. XIX), la Casa del primer marqués de Santillana, la Casa del Lagarto o la antigua cárcel (S. XVI).
Son igualmente destacables la ermita de la Virgen de la Piedad (S. XV-XVII), la ermita de la Cruz (S.XVI-XVII-XIX), y la ermita de San Juan de Cestillos (s XVIII), así como el Mirador Sánchez Arjona, el Puente Mayor (S. XVI), las murallas medievales y la calzada de piedra del siglo XIV.
