Main Research Fields
The efficiency at the generation, transmission, distribution and
conversion stages of electrical energy management is a outstanding
research field, considering its relationship with the global warming and
the climate change. In fact, this research field evolves beyond the scope
of the DIEECS itself, thus giving birth to collaborations with other
Departments and research centers.
Its specific interests are in the remarkable impact of the management
and rational use of energy that industrial electronic systems for energy
power supply of different industrial loads (transmission lines, motors,
heat loads, pumps, lighting loads, other electronic devices...)
The generation and transmission of electrical energy are classic research
field of the Department, that acquire a new importance considering the
effects in energy saving of the power quality in transmission lines.

Electric Machines
The Department has a wide experience in research lines related to electric
machines, from the point of view of the analysis and modeling as well as from the
point of view of control, design and optimization. The most important research
activities include the predictive maintenance of power transformers, and electrical
facilities, the field control of induction machines, PWM modulation and current
regulators, power drives for several motors, the sensorless speed/position control,
the electronic power supply systems, etc.
Moreover, new tendencies in the research as new motor types, new applications
(hybrid and electric vehicles, etc.) can be also considered.

Industrial Electronics is a broad research field, which includes those technologies "aimed at
improving the industrial and manufacturing processes, from digital electronics, power electronics,
programmable electronic systems MPU / MCU / FPGA / PLD / DSP , etc.
Collaboration with industry in this field is very intense, resulting in many contracts with companies
and research projects designed and conducted by professors of the Department.
Areas of application are multiple, precisely because of the breadth of the research field itself. As
significant examples of specific projects developed in the Department, we would highlight
improvements and optimization of the production process of steel, automation of greenhouses,
product development of lighting systems, power supplies, systems of air conditioning and heating,

Main Research Fields
This field is the study, analysis and design of systems for measuring, monitoring and automation of products and
industrial processes, using programmable devices.
Different algorithms and technologies are used, as electronic systems of measurement and control, industrial
communication networks, PLCs, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, computer vision or thermal imaging.
Monitoring extracts, processes, stores and presents this information, allowing on-line real-time knowledge the status
of the process and also off-line analyses of the causes of failures or problems.
Sensors and instrumentation systems are the basis for the capture, preparation and digitization of the magnitudes of
interest.
Virtual instrumentation allows to integrate the sensor with computer
components, facilitating automatic measures,

Signals and Systems
This research line includes the activities related to the application of the theory of
signals and systems, that are the basis of both the signal processing and the
analysis and design of control systems.
The term signal includes audio, video, image, biological, acoustic, radar,
astronomy, etc. The applications are related to problems of filtering, encoding,
transmission, estimation, detection, analysis, synthesis, recognition, recording
and playback of signals by analog or digital media.
On the other hand, the feedback control is used in engineering to increase the
performance of the systems and make them robust to factors such as noise, wear,
modeling errors and other undesirable phenomena. Examples of applications
include automotive, robotics, aerospace, chemical reactors or power generation.
