the unexpected hit of the season,
with everyone from fashion edi-
tors to street-style stars embracing
punchy prints and pop art referenc-
es. Join the style set with this play-
ful necklace by Atos Lombardini.
A family company, the Lombardini
Group was founded in Bologna in
1986 and remains in the hands of

this necklace looks great against its
chunky gold chain, pops of red and
black providing a striking contrast.
Padrões com desenhos animados
tornaram-se um sucesso nesta
estação com editores de moda e
estrelas de moda urbana a aderi-
rem aos poderosos estampados e
referências a pop-art. Junte-se a
este estilo com o divertido colar
por Atos Lombardini. Esta es-
tação o padrão preferido dos jo-
alheiros são os lábios que neste
colar fcam lindos com a grossa
corrente de ouro, e os toques de
encarnado e preto conferem-lhe
um contraste elegante.

While many European cities are
defned by their towering cathe-

in no small measure with its intri-
cate artistic elements. These stem
from the Moorish invasion in 711
of the Iberian peninsula, of which
modern-day Portugal is part.
These cultured conquerors from

From the market stalls and
quaint craft stores of Lis-
bon’s São Jorge area to
the sloping streets of Bairro Alto,
there’s one common thread that
binds the city and Portugal as a na-

Thanks to the country’s posi-

The ceramic experience con-tinues in the country’s much-laud-ed azulejo tiles. The Arab-infu-enced interlocking designs, mosaic patterns and repeated symbols found on azulejos came to Portugal via the Moors (see our feature on page 36) and have become a key part of the Portuguese cityscape, most prominently in Lisbon. It’s here that these richly decorated glazed tiles are given full creative rein, not just in the signature white and blue but in richest canary yel-low, emerald green and softest lilac; the Viúva Lamego ceramics factory and the Fronteira palace are just two examples.
Inside the Viúva Lamego fac-tory, a world of print, colour and vibrancy unfolds. Hand-painted tiles, decorated and glazed by the company’s craftspeople, are as tra-ditional and charming as they were when the brand made its debut in 1849. During the 20th century, the brand worked with local artists to create one-of-a-kind tiles that became collector’s items and to-day the factory is nothing short of

For centuries the Portuguese jewellery scene has been domi-nated by traditional, delicate fli-gree jewellery, crafted from fne strands of precious metals woven together to create ornate, elabo-rate motifs. However in recent years the country has seen some-thing of a jewellery revolution, with younger designers creating bolder, more contemporary and innovative designs.
The ancient art of fligree, fli-
grana in Portuguese, predates the Roman period, making it one of the oldest jewellery-making tech-niques on record. Believed to have originated in Asia, fligree found its way across the continents and be-came extremely popular in 12th-century Portugal. Once it had made its way into western Europe, fligree was combined with the typical styles of the times to create gold and silver metalwork, often rich in religious iconography, and presented as gifts to the nobility.

A antiga arte da fligrana ante-cede o período romano, tornando-a na mais antiga técnica de fabrico de joias de que há registo. Nascida na Ásia, atravessou continentes e tornou-se extremamente popu-lar no Portugal do século XII. Pendants, earrings and necklaces are all crafted by crocheting fne gold and silver strands into inter-twining circular designs, some of which incorporate gemstones that evoke fowers. ‘There are increas-ingly good jewellery designers in Portugal, young designers who are launching contemporary jewellery brands using all the knowledge and heritage of traditional Portuguese jewellery to create current, refresh-ing and very original pieces,’ ob-serves Mota.
Another young designer, Lia Gonçalves, echoes Mota’s senti-ments about the new guard of Portuguese jewellery designers. ‘Portuguese jewellery is rich in master jewellers who learned their craft from previous generations,

destaques em muitos restaurantes.
No entanto, estas cidades oferecem
muito mais variedade, estilo e cria-
tividade nas suas cozinhas. Pratos
internacionais estão disponíveis e
um grupo de empreendedores che-
fes estão a dar o seu toque contem-
porâneo a pratos tradicionais.

Despite its enviable location and
extensive menu, Faz Figura is one
of Lisbon’s best-kept secrets. The
restaurant is set in the hills above
the city centre, ofering panoramic
coastal views, while its interior dé-
cor is bright, light and infuenced
by Portuguese tradition. Expect
the menu to be broadly based on
Portuguese cuisine, with enough
variety to satisfy any taste; typical
options might include pork loin
cooked in Coca-Cola and served
with a sweet apple purée, smoked
cod with ginger and lemon caviar
or tuna with a sesame crust and
horseradish cream.
apesar da localização invejável e
menu extenso, o Faz Figura é um
dos melhores segredos mais bem
guardados de Lisboa. O restauran-
te está situado nas colinas acima
do centro da cidade, oferecendo
paisagens da costa, no seu interior
a decoração é luminosa, leve e in-
fuenciada pela tradição portugue-
sa. Conte com um menu bastante
baseado na cozinha portuguesa,
mas com grande variedade para
satisfazer qualquer palato; as o-
pções típicas podem incluir lombo
de porco com um puré de maçã.

FALL IN LOVE WITH CORK
Cork has long been a staple of
Portuguese craftsmanship, and
this stylish backpack by eco-
friendly accessories label Love in
Cork ofers a modern way to em-
brace it. Love in Cork was founded
by two sisters who wanted to con-
tinue their family’s cork business
in a modern way. The unusual
material brings something new to
simple, classic designs, from satch-
els and holdalls to tablet cases. The
clean lines of this backpack allow
the natural texture of the cork to
shine through, while neon stitch-
ing and straps add a playful ele-
ment. This smart, practical bag is
sure to prove a talking point. hl
A cortiça é há muito tempo um
produto importante no artesanato
português e esta elegante mochi-
la, confeccionada pela marca de
acessórios amiga do ambiente Love
in Cork, é uma forma moderna de
o experimentar. Os materiais fora
do comum trazem algo de novo a
designs clássicos como as sacolas,
bolsas de viagem e pastas para ta
blets. As linhas simples desta
mochila deixam a cortiça ser o ator
principal e as costuras e alças em
néon conferem-lhe um toque di-
vertido. Esta distinta mochila será
certamente motivo de conversa.
