1 System Description
1.1 Objectives
Alarm and visualization systems take an important place on modern ships. The volume of informa-
tion is constantly increasing. It is therefore of great importance to collect data carefully for diagnostic
purposes.
Bning Automationstechnologie has taken up this challenge by developing a modular and decentra-
lized ship alarm and control system for professional use.
This document illustrates the structure of the system for your application. Included components are
described and their operation explained.
It is not intended to deeply discuss technical details, but to give an overview of the main characteris-
tics and the automation possibilities, based on previous projects realized by Bning.
1.2
General concept and architecture
Bning Alarm & Monitoring System is defined as a combination of systems which are interconnected
in order to allow centralized access to sensor information or command/control from workstations, with the aim of increasing safe and efficient ship's management by suitably qualified personnel.
The Bning Alarm & Monitoring System was developed for the Yacht segment and can be used for
all yachts of all sizes. The system is prepared to work with and to integrate other Bning devices as
well as other manufacturers systems, such as radar and navigation systems.
The system consists of displays on the bridge with integrated computers that are able to receive all
the information from the sensors of the ship through a connection with the CAN Bus Network.
Behind the screens, the ship alarm system data stations receive and transmit data for the sensors and
actuators, and communicate with each other via CAN Bus network, a high-speed data network, de-
signed to connect electronic units, largely applied in the automotive, aero and maritime industry.

AHD 1019 is a high-quality product of Bning Automationstechnologie, providing a so-called Panel
Computer System. A display with a visible screen diameter of 19 is combined with a powerful com-
puter in one casing. A sophisticated design concept reduces the demand of cabling at minimum
demand of space.
By means of an innovative operation concept, all relevant systems are for the first time operated and
controlled from one position. For example, a control panel AHD-DC can be installed in the arm-rest
of the pilotchair. The connection of control panel to the system is performed by industrial CAN Bus.
Up to eight display units can be operated and controlled from one central panel. Alternatively to the
AHD-DC unit, a touch screen-based control panel AHD-DC880 can be used. The graphical display
offers the same functionality as the common control panel. The attractive and futuristic design of the
panels meets customers high demands.
All available data are processed graphically and visualized individually embedding ship profiles andgeneral arrangement plans. The AHD 1019 features a bright and daylight qualified display with high
resolution in SXGA quality. The high luminous intensity and the wide angle of view ensure the rea-
dability of messages and alarms in any case. The operating system of the integrated computer was
developed for industrial applications. It ensures highest degree of system stability and even excuses
shut downs of power supply. Moving parts as e.g. hard disks or fans are substituted by innovative
components. AHD 1019 is provided with a passive cooling system; it is shock-insensitive and emits
no disturbing ambient noise produced by rotating parts such as fans and hard disks.
1.3.1
Control Panels for AHD 1019
The control Panel AHD-DC can operate up to 8 AHD 1019 Displays. The control data are sent via
CAN Bus Network, so that the system cabling up to the displays is simpler and less expensive.

1.4 Data Stations for Acquisition and Processing
The modules can be installed close to the sensors. The wiring is reduced to a minimum.
Data acquisition and control of actuators is carried out by means of analog data stations AHD-SAS
15 and serially connected binary stations AHD-PS 47 (AHD-PS 30 or AHD-PS 15).
1.4.1 Analog data station AHD-SAS 15
All sensor data are locally evaluated in data stations AHD-SAS 15. Standardization, filtering, thre-
shold monitoring, alerting and grouping are carried out by means of integrated data processing.
The arrangement of the components may vary depending on the requirement as a central or distri-
buted alarm system. Communication is designed via a redundant CAN bus for best data safety. All
alarms and values are forwarded from data stations to the visualization systems.
Picture 16 AHD-SAS15 data station with 15 analog or binary inputs
Another important characteristic of AHD-SAS 15 is the autonomous operation of the device, inde-
pendent of the availability or failure of other components. Even in case of a complete bus failure
(e.g. cable damage) alarms may be reported. For this purpose further contacts (horn, light signaling
column) are incorporated. Additionally, the device is equipped with a local input for acknowledg-ment which can be connected externally. By means of integrated LEDs alarms will be displayed
locally.

1.4.2 Binary data station AHD-PS47
The data stations AHD-PS47are electronic devices to be fitted into a housing (cabinet, desk, .).
They serve as decentralized collection of binary signals and serial output to be forwarded to the AHD-
SAS15.
An important feature is that the wiring is optimised, from 94 down to just 3 wires, including power
supply. Furthermore the device enables each input to be easily checked for short to ground/short to
earth.
The data station functions across a broad voltage range between 17 and 32 VDC. Working with a
wire diameter of at least 0,5mm the distance to the receiver can be up to 1,000m

1.4.3 Central Unit AHD 882
The central unit AHD 882is a microprocessor controlled device for the monitoring of serial data with
freely configurable distribution to different messaging systems.
AHD 882 central unit can be applied in alarm systems, control systems, monitoring systems as well as
in on-duty systems.
It collects all information transmitted from the substations for processing and storage in an inte-
grated memory. AHD 882 is connected to all data stations incl. AHD-SAS15 via CAN-Bus Network,
therefore AHD 882 is able to receive all processed data.
Alarm messages (single or group messages) can be released via 16 channels that can be freely allo-
cated. Alarms and conditions can be displayed on several visualization units (i.e. AHD 1019). Anymeasurement point can be shown on one or more positions of different reporting systems, such as
the Chamber panel. Additionally, the device features 5 freely configurable group relays.
Other interfaces such as RS232, additional control inputs, acknowledgement inputs and relay out-
puts expands the functionality to handle and allow versatile application possibilities.

1.4.4 Interface Converter AHD-UCC
The Universal CAN Converter AHD-UCCis a microcontroller-controlled unit for logging and conver-
sion of measuring point data from communication protocols of external CAN bus networks into
Bning AHD-SAS CAN bus network.
Picture 19 - AHD-UIC Interface Converter
By that, selected data of connected external systems can be updated and monitored continuously
and visualized e.g. on graphic pages of connected colour displays.
The configuration of data communication with settings for the adaptable external data protocols and
the definition of required data conversions is performed by configuration software for Bning AHD-
SAS network.

1.4.5 Interface Converter AHD-UIC
The data converters AHD-UICare designed to collect data from external systems via Modbus RTU
serial interfaces. Resulting messages are passed to a redundant CAN bus to ensure alarms are issued
to all added units.
Picture 20 - AHD-UIC Interface Converter
Two devices are paired to provide all data for redundant CAN bus.
Modbus RTU is a digital serial data connection. Max. possible data rate is 38,400 Baud, a maximum
of 100 values per AHD-UIC can be processed. The data retrieval is carried out sequentially, cycle time
is thus dependent on the data rate and the amount of queried data.
System conditions can lead to delays in alerting depending of cycle time.
Cabling and mounting of components is to be carried out by the yard.Pre-configured CAN bus cable in matching lengths, T-pieces, terminal adapters and terminators can
be supplied on request.
Cabling must be laid in line structure. The maximum cable length of CAN bus is to be observed, pos-
sibly repeater stations for data processing must be used.
With high quality cable a maximum cable length of 200m is possible. The AHD-UIC is a data conver-
ter that provides the interface with other suppliers equipment (i.e. SYMAP) via serial RS485 Inter-
face. All the values are then transferred to the CAN Bus network, so that the warning and alarms can
be also inserted in the ship alarm system.

The system is part of the Bning alarm system.
It consists of the following components.
AHD 882 Central processing unit
AHD-PS 15B On duty panel
AHD 406-2 Cabin panel
Picture 21 Topology of On-Duty System
The AHD-882 is the central processing unit within a on-duty system on ships. It is connected to the
main system with a redundant CAN-bus and gets all the information within the system.
All the resulting status and alarm messages are sent depending on the configuration to a maximum
of 16 serial output channels. Thus, each value can be forwarded as an individual or in a group mes-
sage to the cabin panels.
