~~ August 30, 2020 ~ 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time~
Dear Parishioners, It is hard to
believe that Labor Day is next weekend and a
new school year is about to begin. What an exciting time this is for our young people who are beginning high school or college for the first time. May they walk always with our Lord Jesus as the beautiful plan He has for their lives unfolds in the years ahead.
We especially look forward to the return of our children here at Saint Martin de Porres School, although things will start out much differently this year with some of the children attending School in the building with social distancing and others joining their classes remotely from home. Our Religious Education Program will begin with remote learning from home for all the children. Let us pray for our precious children that they stay safe as school begins and that things will get back to normal as soon as possible.
In the midst of this unprecedented time we are living through, Jesus has some challenging words for us in today’s Gospel: “Whoever wishes to come after Me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” It is hard to understand why the cross, why suffering, must come into our lives. However, we need to look to Jesus and follow Him. Jesus never asked us to do anything that He did not first do Himself.
Jesus showed His Divine Power by His many miracles. He cured the sick, gave sight to the blind, made cripples walk, calmed the seas, and raised the dead to life. Paradoxically, however, His most awesome display of power was His powerlessness on the Cross. According to the thinking of the world, the Cross of Jesus is weakness and defeat. But, as St. Paul put it, for us who are being saved by it the Cross is the Power of God and the Wisdom of God. The Cross and Resurrection of Jesus reveals that God’s Love is more powerful than all the forces of evil put together, more powerful than death itself.
That is what Peter did not yet understand in today’s Gospel. After Jesus told His disciples that He was heading to Jerusalem to face The Cross, Peter expressed the thinking of the world as he said: “God forbid that any such thing should happen to you.” And Jesus says to Peter in reply: “Get behind Me Satan, you are thinking not as God does but as human beings do.” Do we think with the mind of the world or with the mind of Christ?
We cannot truly follow Jesus without accepting our share of the Cross in our lives. And some have a much larger share of the Cross than others. Contrary to the thinking of the world, we find true peace when we embrace the Cross in our lives for it is there that we are closest to the Heart of Jesus who on the Cross allowed His Heart to be pierced out of Love for you and for me. “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, make our hearts like unto thine.” May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey

or more half hour slots for adoration or at least stop in at some point during the day to spend some time with our Lord
Jesus truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament.

reopen on Tuesday, September 8th at 9:30 am.
The RCIA is the process by which our Parish Community assists men and women to respond to God’s call, to become fully initiated into the
Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. It is also appropriate for those who are baptized in other Christian denomination, wishing to fully embrace life in the Catholic Christian community. The process begins in September and concludes at the Easter Vigil the following year. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. in the Nativity Center. Those interested should contact the parish office for details @ 845-473-4222.

also need a back-up person to cover for our cook (6-11am) when he needs a day off. If you or someone you know is interested in either of these paid positions, please call Marion Wells at 845-440-6627. Thank you, St. Martin’s, for all you do for Meals on Wheels.
The Religious Education Program needs teachers and aides for various grade levels for the 2020-2021 school year. Because of social distancing, the number of children allowed in each classroom will be limited. We also need certified nurses, first responders, or EMTs to help during our
class times. Classes are held on Tuesday nights from 5:30PM-7:00PM and on Wednesday nights from 6:15PM-7:45PM. Our sessions last for 90 minutes per week for 30 weeks. Please contact the office at (845) 471-8728 and leave a message and I will return your call. I can also be reached by email at [email protected]. Our Religious Education Program relies on people who volunteer their time and talents to teach God’s children about their faith. Thank you for your help! Keep safe and well.
