O Mundo a Gente
Muda a Partir de
Onde a Gente Está
A CAMPANHA
Vizinhos,
Rocinha e São Conrado compartilham a mesma e deslumbrante paisagem – ocupam um majestoso vale
Vídeo aqui
aberto no litoral do Oceano Atlântico.
partes do mundo.
(imagens do prédio abaixo e no vídeo).
metodologia do ativismo visual.
Caso consigamos ultrapassar o valor mínimo acima mencionado, procuraremos atender outras necessidades
Título do ProjetoMUDANÇA DE ATITUDE EM SAÚDE E MEIO-AMBIENTE ATRAVÉS DA EDUCAÇÃO PARTICIPATIVA E DE TECNOLOGIAS DE COMUNICAÇÃO COMUNITÁRIA (TCC)
centros.
Região: AMÉRICA LATINA ( BRASIL )
Contexto. Objetivos do Projeto, Metodologia e Resultados Esperados
amplos.
vista as seguintes características:
além de fazê-lo para si mesmos;
(2) Seu reconhecido interesse em temas de saúde e saneamento ambiental;
futuro)

WE CHANGE THE WORLD
FROM WHERE WE ARE
Video here
Help us renovate a building in the favela of Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, where we can make a home for our educational project, promoting health and urban sanitation in partnership with young community members.
Introduction: As many will be aware, Brazil is currently challenged by a period of severe political and economic crisis.
We are living with a real risk of breakdown of the democratic order. After a dark period of a dictatorial rule, Brazil's
democracy was obtained through no small sacrifice and is still young. We cannot countenance its loss! The safeguarding
of democracy depends also upon engaging all citizens, through projects that hold them with day-to-day issues at
workplace, educational establishments and especially in the places where they live. This is why we are calling on you to
help support our campaign!
THE CAMPAIGNRocinha is among the largest favelas in Latin America. It is home to more than one hundred thousand people
who live in an impoverished environment. Sanitation is precarious, and access to health services is irregular.
Despite police occupation, violence from the drug trade is commonplace. Nevertheless, Rocinha has a joyful
and thriving cultural life. Drawing on its own resources, the community shows a remarkable emotional
resiliency.
Immediately next door, the neighborhood of São Conrado is home to about ten thousand residents. Here,
health and consumption patterns resemble those found in many cities in the northern hemisphere. Rocinha
and São Conrado are neighbors, with the same stunning views of a majestic valley opening onto the Atlantic
Ocean. Taken together, the two are a microcosm of the profound social inequalities that can be seen
throughout Brazil.
Viramundo is an NGO born in this context, dedicated to promoting health as a human right, alongside other
rights like education, culture, housing, peace, and social justice. For ten years, our NGO has worked with
young people in the community. We run participatory education workshops focused on health and urban
sanitation, using tools of community communication (PhotoVoice and participatory video). We also offer free
one-on-one and group psychology services. Our future plans include adding selected free primary healthcare
services, such as family planning and STD care.
Our NGO’s mission is to bolster collective engagement in public health in Brazil and abroad. In 2011,
Viramundo launched an international course, the Health and Environmental Education course (HEED Course),
at PUC-Rio. Since then, we’ve built and maintained connections with academics at prestigious national and
international centers through the Visible Voices and the ESSE Mundo Digital Networks. We hope to duplicate
local innovations, adapted to different contexts, in other parts of the world. Our objective is to empower
adolescents to become creators of PhotoVoice and participatory video projects. With these tools, they can
stimulate broader and more informed community participation.
In recognition of our work, PUC-Rio has granted the NGO rights to occupy a small building in the heart of
Rocinha. The location is at the center of an area of the community called the Valão— a open-air canal of raw
sewage!
The building is badly in need of renovations in order to make it minimally functional, as you can see (below the
images and see also the video showing the building). This is why we have launched this crowdfunding
campaign. Our minimum goal is to raise US$14,000 over the course of one month. We invite you to become
one of the many supporters of our NGO. You can participate in securing the renovation the building that will
become our new home. With the success of this campaign, we can properly celebrate the tenth anniversary of
the NGO in 2016!
WHO WE AREViramundo is based on the principal of public health as a human right for all. This belief informs our efforts to
unite community members in Rocinha with those in other marginalized neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro. We
also look to the international community, as we recognize that the urban peripheries around the globe share
much in common, in struggles and successes, as well as in problems and challenging solutions.
In order to promote participatory educational processes in health and urban sanitation, we have adopted visual
activism as our method of choice. Through these techniques, we have built the capacity of youth and adults to
create participatory video and PhotoVoice projects, as a means of promoting longitudinal interaction between
activist and community.
The innovative character of our accomplishments has garnered recognition: the Victor Valla Award from the
Ministry of Health, incorporation of our methodology into the Health and Environmental Education course at
PUC-Rio, adoption of the HEED course by the prestigious Social Service of Course (Sesc), as well as warm
receptions at universities in the US, UK, and beyond.
.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOROur fundraising goal is US$18,000, which will fund all of our needs and activities central to our vision for 2016.
(Please note: Our directorship does not depend on the NGO for income. As such, any funds we raise will go
directly to our outlined necessities and activities)
Budget for Donations Received Towards Renovation and Equipment Needs for the Rocinha PUC-Rio’s Building in Rocinha
Budget
The minimum amount we need is $14,000 in order to proceed with the renovation (materials and labor) and
acquisition of furniture and equipment (tables, chairs, shelving, air conditioning).
(Please note: The plan for the renovation is being supplied to us at no cost by the American architect Michael
Larkins)
If we are able to surpass this benchmark, any amount in excess will go toward meeting our other needs in
terms of advancing the visual activism encouraged by the NGO, including:
• Cameras for participatory video workshops
• Laptops for video editing
• Projector and speakers for community presentations of participatory video projects
• Additional activities and guest teachers for the teens
MESSAGE FROM VIRAMUNDO'S DIRECTOR, HELENA BASTOS
Once renovations have been completed on the building in Rocinha, Viramundo plans to start a new project
with youth within the first 12 months.
Project Title
ACTIVISM IN URBAN HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT THROUGH PARTICIPATORY EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (CCT) Introduction: This project proposes the use of participatory social technology in the community of Rocinha, which is living
under the pressure of chronic health and environmental problems. Our methodology seeks to familiarize
adolescents with health and environmental education (HEED) issues, teaching them skills in participatory
digital media. In order to improve in the use of these techniques, we have partnered with socially-engaged
academics from various prestigious centers of study (see listing at the bottom of this text).
Region: LATIN AMERICA (Brazil)
Context, Objectives, Methods, and Expected Results
Viramundo’s mission is to support and reclaim public health, which is increasingly threatened in Brazil and
abroad. Towards this goal, we promote participatory engagement with civil society. With this vision, the NGO
teaches skills in community communication technologies (CCT). In Rocinha, we facilitate the creation of
participatory videos and photographs (PhotoVoice) that address health and environmental problems in the
community. More than 100,000 people live there in abject conditions: open-air sewage, irregular trash
collection, rat infestation, one of the highest rates of tuberculosis in the Americas, alcoholism and drug abuse,
early pregnancy, AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, criminal and state violence, a climate of
permanent fear, etc.
The primary goal of the project is to teach young residents the use of participatory media communication
techniques so that they may be better equipped to change attitudes regarding health and urban sanitation in
Rocinha. Always with the youth in mind, our specific goals are:
(1) Recognize the main health and sanitation problems in Rocinha;
(2) Investigate the concepts and habits of the community with respect to health and the urban environment;
(3) Empower the community to select the themes that they consider to be the most relevant;
(4) Teach skills in the basic management of digital media necessary for the creation of participatory videos and
PhotoVoice projects;
(5) Identify the degree of attitude and behavior change in the areas of health and urban sanitation, with the end
result being the display of the visual products for the community, to create further dialogue and learning.
Methods
As outlined above, participatory methods are incorporated at every level of the Project. With respect to
educational techniques, the process begins with the identification of the most relevant problems in health and
the urban environment. It then continues with the determination of the attitudes and behaviors related to these
problems that are prevalent in the community. The goal is then to choose which themes are identified by the
Rocinha residents and project coordinators as of greatest interest.
With respect to Community Communication Technologies (CCT), a group of residents will be taught basic
skills in digital media production (filming, photography, editing, etc.). The goal is to empower residents to
manage TCC applied to ESSA, from the identification of themes all the way to the exhibition of visual products
to the community at large. The group will seek, in this manner, to widen the debate, to broaden the circle of
participation, to create a collective push towards solutions in the areas of health and urban sanitation.
In order to compose this aforementioned group, we will give priority to young residents (between the ages of
13 and 17), bearing in mind the following characteristics:
(1) Ability to communicate with other age groups
(children, adults, elders) beyond her or his own;
(2) Recognized interest in health and urban
environment issues;
(3) Propensity towards and ability to quickly
learn the use of technological devices.
Target Population(1) 20 adolescents (10 per semester), between the
ages of 13 and 17, of both genders, to be
qualified as Health and Environmental Education Visual
Agents (HEVA). Duration of the project: 12 months (with the
possibility of continued involvement)
(2) 800-1,000 residents who will attend the
exhibitions and debates resulting from the
videos and PhotoVoice products of the
HEVA, and who are welcome to continue to
participate as long as the project continues.
Expected Results
The project aims to reach three different types of results:
(1) Social validation of HEED and CCT by demonstrating adoption of healthy and environmentally-conscious
habits by the residents of Rocinha;
(2) Engagement of the Health and Environmental Visual Agents and the residents during the dialogue and
exhibition of videos and PhotoVoice projects in defense of universal human rights to health and basic
sanitation;
(3) Communication of the Project and its results among academic institutions, governments, social media, and
other media in Brazil and abroad.
Extra: Mental Health and Primary Care Services
Interested adolescents, connected to the project or not, will be able to count on free one-on-one and group
psychological services, certain primary medical services (family planning, STD services), as well as health
promotion and preventive activities targeted
for her or his age group.
