ABSTRACT
The learning of foreign languages and the reference to the world Culture become
processes of importance for the global society we live in today. It is up to the teacher to
mediate the contact between learners and this Culture in order to bring them up as
human beings with a greater perspective of the World. It is also the teacher’s role to
develop strategies which motivate learners to this learning process; therefore, it is very
important to study ways that may increase the motivation of today classes, which often
present a group of learners defined by high level of language knowledge and social and
cultural experience.
This Project was developed with an English class and with a German class and
tries to relate motivation with culture in order to observe if the good language learners
can be more motivated to learn when exposed to cultural references which enclose the
process of language learning.
All classes are unique and react in different ways; this Report intends to expose
the results observed in these two classes and to translate the importance of cultural
references in foreign language classes, although it is not possible to claim that cultural
references trigger an increase of all learners’ motivation.

1.1 A Escola Secundária António Sérgio
A escolha
6
Ainda no
motivação, a literatura e a autonomia.
neste ultimo caso me frustrava e me aliciava a procurar respostas para solucionar esse
A ideia seria
8
9
Neste segundo momento parece-me então imperativo definir qual a Cultura, ou
conteúdo cultural, onde reside então a diferença observável durante as minhas aulas?
11
CAPITULO 3 – O PRIMEIRO CICLO DO PROJECTO
3.1 O planeamento
exploradas no terceiro ponto deste capítulo.
3.2.2.1 Aula “Orientierung in der Stadt” – 4 de Fevereiro
17
as minhas colegas e orientadora.
20
CAPITULO 4 – O SEGUNDO CICLO DO PROJECTO
4.1 O planeamento
seriam preenchidas, durante as minhas aulas, pelas minhas colegas, enquanto eu
21
4.2 A análise das aulas do Segundo Ciclo de Investigação-Acção
4.2.1 As aulas das turmas de Inglês
4.2.1.1 Aula “House I” -23 de Março
alunos do 7º ano.
retrocesso motivacional nestes momentos.

partes do mundo.

seguinte dedicado a referências culturais.
interessante e tinha, aliás, sido a última pessoa a fotografar John Lennon, horas antes do

No entanto, a motivação

comprovação do meu pressuposto.

final. As grelhas preenchidas pelas minhas colegas ajudaram-me a isolar momentos
professora beneficiou a concretização deste Projecto.
Investigação-Acção no contexto actual do Ensino.
do meu Projecto.
irreflectidas. Durante o desenvolvimento deste estudo deparei-me com várias

Lead-in 10 mins
T sticks cards with the words “Where?”, “what?”, “When?” and “How?” on the board.
T tells pupils they will be visited by someone today but that they will have to ask some questions to find out who he/she is.
T elicits some possible questions for each Wh-word and helps pupils to revise what kind of sentences can be build with these words to find out someone’s identity. (Examples: Where/when were you born?, What kind of job do you have?, How old are you?,...)
Then, T tells pupils that they are now ready to receive their guest and places a chair in front of the class. Pupils are supposed to ask questions to the empty chair in order to gather information to guess the guest’s identity (Einstein). T asks all the questions on that person’s behalf and writes some key words about that person on the board.
Once pupils find out who the guest is, T sticks his photo on the board, in order to show all pupils who he is.
To set scene, to speculate and to motivate pupils to the topic.
Cards Board Picture
Pre- reading 2 mins
T now sticks Obama’s photo on the board and asks pupils what they know about him. T also asks if they know how old Obama is (but expects them to not know it).
To raise pupils’ motivation to the following activity.
To prepare next activity.
Board Photo
While-Reading 1 5 mins
T tells pupils they are going to read a text to find out how old Obama is and how many daughters or sons he has, and also their names.
To increase pupils’ motivation for the reading-task and also to develop reading skills.
WS
T hands out the worksheet and tells pupils to read the text to find the answers.
T then asks pupils the answers
and corrects the first reading-task orally.
While-Reading 2 13 mins
Pupils are now supposed to do exercise A1, which consists of filling the gaps in the text with information given in a box.
While Pupils Work, T gives out
to some Pupils one sheet with an expression from the box. These will be used to correct the exercise later.
Exercise is corrected with pupils’
help. Each pupil sticks the right answer next to the number on the board.
To develop reading skills.
To check Ss’
understanding of the text.
Board WS Sheets
While- reading 3 7 mins
Pupils are now asked to quickly do exercise A2, in which they are asked to extract the most important information from the text.
The exercise is corrected on the board.
To evaluate pupils’ ability to extract the most important information from the text.
WS Board
After-reading 10 mins
T sticks on the board a paper with some questions:
“Where did he study law?” “When did he graduate from
Columbia?” “What did Obama decide in
2008?”
T sticks also the answer to these questions but fragmented in different sheets:
“Studied / he / at/ the Harvard University Law School. / law”
“He / in 1983. / graduated”
To recall to pupils’ knowledge about word order in simple past sentences.
To set scene for next activity.
WS Board Sheets
“He / to run for President of the United States. /decided” T organises the answers with
Pupils’ help. Practice 1 18 mins
T tells pupils to analyse the sentences in silence and try to find in which tense they are.
Then T and Pupils make the analysis together. After finding a pattern, T elicits from Pupils the rules for Simple Past.
Pupils are now supposed to do exercises B1 and B2.
The correction is made with the
help from pupils.
To revise the use, the rules and word order in the Simple Past.
WS Board Sheets

Then, pupils are supposed to do exercise B3, in which they match the name, picture and occupation for each personality.
The correction is made on the board.
To set scene for next activity.
To develop pupils’ knowledge about the world’s culture.
WS Board
Closing 20 mins
T explains exercise B4 and asks pupils to do it.
The correction follows.
To develop pupils’ knowledge about the world’s culture.
To evaluate pupils’ understanding of the taught tense.
To use the Simple Past in meaningful contexts.

In Berlin fehlt absolut nichts!

Was tragen die Jugendlichen?
