Victor Gabriel Gilbert nasceu em Paris, França, em 13 de fevereiro de 1847.

Sem poder frequentar a “École des Beaux-Arts” pela falta de recursos, aos treze anos trabalhou como aprendiz de Eugène Adam, um artesão de temas decorativos. À noite, assistia aulas na “École de la Ville de Paris”, com Pierre Levasseur, sua única formação artística oficial.

Em 1873, Gilbert estreou no “Salon” de Paris.

Gilbert tornou-se o pintor de “Les Halles”, em Paris, uma área que então era um centro de vendedores ambulantes e mercados. A capacidade de Gilbert para captar diferentes atividades de trabalho e tipos sociais é outro aspecto de seu estilo. Uma de suas obras, “Un Coin de la Halle aux Poisson, le Matin”, exposta no “Salon” de 1880, lhe rendeu sua primeira medalha.

Em 1897 foi nomeado “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”. Tornou-se membro da “Société des Artistes Français”, em 1914, e recebeu o Prêmio “Léon Bonnat” em 1926. Continuou a apresentar-se periodicamente no “Salon” até 1933. 

Morreu em Paris, em 21 de julho de 1933.

Biography:

Victor Gabriel Gilbert was born in Paris, France, on February 13, 1847.

Unable to attend the “École des Beaux-Arts” by the lack of resources, when he was thirteen he worked as an apprentice to Eugène Adam, a craftsman of decorative themes. At night, he attended lessons at the “École de la Ville de Paris”, with Pierre Levasseur, which was his only form of official artistic training.

In 1873, Gilbert debuted at the “Salon”, in Paris.

Gilbert became the painter of “Les Halles”, in Paris, an area which was then a center of street sellers and markets. Gilbert’s ability to capture different activities of work and social types is another aspect of his style. One of his works, “Un Coin de la Halle aux Poisson, le Matin”, exhibited at the “Salon” of 1880, earned him his first medal.

In 1897 he was named “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”. He became a member of the “Societé des Artistes Français” in 1914, and received the Award “Léon Bonnat”in 1926. Gilbert continued to exhibit regularly at the “Salon” until 1933.

He died in Paris on July 21, 1933.
