Parish of Alexandra Park, London N10 Diocese of London – Additional Reports 1. Parochial Church Council and General Parish Activities See Report & Accounts 31 December 2018, page 4, section 3 ‘Achievements and Performance’.

On behalf of the PCC Secretary 2. Church Fabric Goods and Ornaments Ian Angus of Carden & Godfrey, the PCC’s Quinquennial Inspector, and Paul Barnard, of Barnard & Carter Builders, have helped us to address the list of works presented in the quinquennial survey reports on the church building and St Andrew’s Centre. IFS Fire & Security undertook the annual inspection of fire extinguishers, fire blankets etc in the church and St Andrew’s Centre (SAC), as well as two twice-yearly inspections of fire alarms and emergency lighting. We are awaiting a few replacement items. The relevant certificates were issued and have been filed in the church log book. Maintenance of the church lighting has continued and several mid- to high-level lamps have been changed. We have initiated a lamp replacement programme using low energy LED lamps. A number of maintenance tasks were completed with regard to the SAC, including problems in the disabled and ladies’ toilets. A new thermostat is need for the SAC water heater. The cleaning equipment storage area has been rearranged and flower-arrangers items have been relocated to the mezzanine level in the SAC. The annual service of the site’s gas-powered central heating system and boilers was carried out in early 2019 by Hall & Randall and some minor repairs were undertaken. The office combi boiler has been given an annual service and records maintained. Barnard & Carter undertook low-level gutter clearance around the site, secured flashing and roof tiles, inspected a drain liable to flooding, the flat roof asphalt covering and wooden window frames. In early January a significant amount of lead and (principally) lead-flashing were stolen from the roof area at the rear of the church. Some damage was done to the sacristy ceiling and walls and one item of furniture and a few vestment sets were stained. The police, the diocesan authorities and the PCC’s insurers have been advised. Temporary covering was secured by Paul Barnard. We learned subsequently of similar thefts from other properties in the locality. Shortly before Christmas we took delivery of a Wyvern digital organ, kindly lent to us by local musician Owain Park as an alternative to the Compton pipe organ, which is in need of work and causing some problems. This will help greatly as we continue to search for a replacement. The Yamaha piano has been regularly tuned and maintained by Michael Lewis. Early in the summer the hammers were carefully regulated, the first significant work in some 20 years. The SAC dishwasher was serviced again, due to incorrect use by the SAC users. We have placed a restriction on access to those who have received instruction on operating it. We thank the sidepersons and all who help to make St Andrew’s a welcoming and friendly place.

Lloyd Ade-Browne & Victor Shadare Churchwardens

3. West Haringey Deanery Synod The July meeting ‘Poetry in Prayer’ was presented by Fr. Ben Kerridge. Following a very interesting talk on how poetry can move the spirit, participants were encouraged to select and reflect for 15 minutes on one of a selection of poems, which Fr Ben had provided. Reading and reflecting on a poem in practice illuminated the role of rhythm and metaphor, which Ben had described in his talk. In the ensuing discussion the poetry and use of iambic pentameter in the Book of Common Prayer was commented upon, as well as its ability to express those feelings that for the ordinary mortal can be so hard to put into words.

Parish of Alexandra Park, London N10 Diocese of London – Additional Reports The poetry of St John of the Cross was cited as a tool for taking one into a deeper place and silence. It was suggested that we do not always need to read the whole poem but should stop and take nourishment from the words that catch our attention. The session provided an opportunity for us to look at poetry afresh and see ways of taking it into our prayer lives. The November meeting was entitled ‘Influencing our Community for the Good’. The evening, hosted by Rev Philip Sudell, explored current initiatives to alleviate poverty across the diocese. It included a presentation on the work of Christians against Poverty (CAP), a look at the church’s work against knife crime and reported on the experiences of a volunteer working in debt counselling.

4. Children’s Work In 2018, due to the number and age of the children attending St Andrew’s on a regular basis, the Footsteps sessions moved to a monthly basis in September. Visitors continue to be welcomed and the provision of these sessions will respond to any future change in the regular attendance of children at St Andrew’s. This year we have varied the material utilised in the teaching sessions and, as the children taking part have been older, there has been an opportunity to follow the gospel readings in more depth. The children enjoy presenting what they have learned at the end of the service and this is always well received by the congregation. Work undertaken during the children’s session is displayed in the children’s area at the rear of the church. This area is always accessible, during all services, for families and provides a range of reading material, colouring pictures and worksheets relevant to the Christian year. The children are also encouraged to take part in regular ‘All-age Eucharists’, this includes reading the lessons and prayers and distributing flowers on Mothering Sunday. The Crib service continues to be very well received by the community and visitors in the parish, and wherever possible, participation of those children attending is warmly encouraged.

5. Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults The Diocese of London is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults to worship and grow in Christ safely. All churches and faith communities are required to have in place arrangements which include:

• Procedures to respond to and report concerns • Codes of safe practice • Safer recruitment procedures

In accordance with this requirement, the Parish of Alexandra Park aims to create safe environments, where children and young people are nurtured and protected; and where all people, and especially those who may be vulnerable for any reason, are able to worship and pursue their faith journey with encouragement and in safety. Our Safeguarding policy governs the work undertaken with vulnerable groups who attend church or take part in activities on church premises (or that are organised by the church) within the parish. Our Policy and Practice for Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults is based on guidelines provided by the Diocese of London. The Diocese Safeguarding Team provides us with advice and support on all matters of Safeguarding. We also take account of guidance from the Church of England House of Bishops. Our Safeguarding Policy is kept in the Church Office and copies are available from our Parish Administrator; a summary of this policy will appear more prominently on the parish website when it is updated. Copies of our Safeguarding Policy are also given to all who work with children, young people and vulnerable adults, along with specific guidance for good practice.

Parish of Alexandra Park, London N10 Diocese of London – Additional Reports Safeguarding concerns: who to contact - Any safeguarding concerns should be brought to the attention of the Incumbent, Father Tony Pybus, or the Church Safeguarding Officer, Jo Blackett, who can seek advice from the Diocesan Safeguarding Team. Out of hours the Diocesan safeguarding helpline can give confidential advice, guidance and support. One of the key areas of our work is ensuring the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, are obtained for all paid and voluntary workers with vulnerable groups. The parish’s ‘lead recruiter’ (previously called ‘evidence checker’) is Gay O’Rourke, the Parish Administrator. As our evidence checker, Gay attended the updated diocesan training at London Diocesan House during 2018, which incorporated recent legal and procedural changes regarding DBS checking. All current DBS holders, including Footsteps Leaders, will undergo a renewed check during 2019. Jo Blackett, the Church Safeguarding Officer (CSO), is available to provide advice and support when workers are concerned for those in their care and if necessary can seek advice from the Diocese of London Safeguarding Team and statutory agencies. Following the Diocesan Church Safeguarding Officer Training at London Diocesan House at the end of 2016, the Diocese have continued to send regular updates to the CSO on any recent legal and Diocesan policy changes regarding safeguarding. As Church Safeguarding Officer, Jo continues to work closely with the Incumbent and Helen Moseley, Children's Champion; we aim to work alongside the leaders of groups to support them in developing good safeguarding practice. All PCC members are also expected to familiarise themselves with the Safeguarding Key Points booklet and reacquaint themselves with the PCC section of the Diocesan Policy Book. All PCC members have completed the on-line safeguarding training provided by the Diocese. Any workers with children, young people or vulnerable adults should also undertake the on-line safeguarding training for the appropriate category every three years. Over the year ahead, we will continue to ensure that we all work together to keep our children and young people and our vulnerable adults safe. In July 2018, the incumbent, churchwardens, Children’s Champion and CSO attended an annual review safeguarding meeting in preparation for the PCC meeting on 11 September 2018. A copy of the Safeguarding Report was then sent to the Diocese.

6. Flower Arrangers 2018 saw a big change to the flower arrangements at St Andrews as Ruth Garnsworthy stepped down from her role as leader. Ruth has produced a multitude of beautiful arrangements for the church over many years. Her dedication in buying flowers for Easter and Christmas, conditioning them and obtaining greenery from local gardens has enabled some spectacular displays. Ruth organised the Flower Arrangers’ Rota, encouraging and teaching many members of the teams. She is sorely missed and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Ruth for all she has done. The number of Flower Arrangers is sadly reduced to three members of the congregation: Alison Boon, Caroline Fletcher and Sarah McGuire, with additional kind help from Iris Challis. Susan Bennett assisted with Christmas flowers and Rita Shadare at Easter. All help is greatly appreciated and if anyone wishes to join us in creating floral arrangements you would be very welcome. A one off arrangement would be appreciated! Conscious of the cost of flowers, efforts were made during the summer and autumn to use flowers from the church gardens, particularly at Harvest, to celebrate what we had grown ourselves.

Parish of Alexandra Park, London N10 Diocese of London – Additional Reports 7. St Andrew’s Centre During 2018 St Andrew’s Centre continued to demonstrate how valuable it is to the local community as well as the parish. The building is obviously cared for, although, more than eleven years since its refurbishment, some minor works have been necessary and the need for some re-painting is apparent in several places. Enquiries about availability for new groups and activities are received frequently, whether regular classes or children’s birthday parties; and the number of regular hiring hours has continued to increase, leaving only a relatively small amount of spare capacity. Occasional local residents meetings continue, as do regular meetings of the Metropolitan Police’s Safer Neighbourhood Team Panel for Alexandra Ward. Norfolk House School uses the facilities on an occasional basis. Two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are now held weekly in St Andrew’s Centre. 8. Music at St Andrew’s The pattern of concerts and recitals seen in recent years continues to develop. Occasional Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon recitals given by professional musicians have been well supported. The Galitzin Ensemble’s January string quartet concert once again entertained and impressed, as did Sebastian Müller of the Guildhall School of Music with a programme of sonatas for violin and piano by Mozart and Brahms. As in previous years, the Fortismere Community Choir and the Fortismere Community Symphony Orchestra (part of the Fortismere School Music Centre project) each gave three concerts to packed houses. Once again, building on existing links with institutions within the local community, St Andrew’s hosted performances by Alexandra Park School and by Norfolk House preparatory school for their students, parents and carers, and students. As news has spread, so the number of approaches has increased, with single performances and recitals series under discussion and enquiries and exciting proposals from far afield. Local composer and choral conductor, Owain Park, has proposed a small music festival to take place in July 2019. Exploration of the possible replacement of the Compton pipe existing organ, with some setbacks and some frustrations. We are deeply indebted to Dr Andrew Hayden of the Association of Independent Organ Advisers, who has been engaged as the PCC’s independent adviser. Ian Angus, the parish’s Quinquennial Inspector, has been closely involved and the London Diocesan Advisory Committee has been kept informed. With further deterioration of the Compton organ, we are most grateful to Owain Park for the loan of his Wyvern digital organ for use in church temporarily. Thanks are due to the organists who played at the liturgies in 2018: Matteo Bragoli (who now plays for most liturgies at St Andrew’s), Mark Underwood, Paul Joslin, Robert Evans, Douglas Knight and David Felstead.

10) Vicar’s Report Fr. Tony reported on his recent, constructive meeting with Bishop Rob about the current nature and concerns of the Parish. Bishop Rob undertook to discuss with the Bishop of Islington forms of support and encouragement available for a small congregation. He said that the Archdeacon of Hampstead will make some enquiries about governance, finance and stewardship issues.and return back to the Parish with relevant feedback of how we may proceed. Fr Tony expressed gratitude for the life of the late Pam Bow, especially for her contribution to the life of St Saviour’s parish and later the Parish of Alexandra Park. Gratitude was also expressed to Christine Barnwell, Lucy Dudley and Helen Moseley who have served the church for many years in different capacities. As from 25 May the PCC will be required to comply with the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation with respect to the holding of individuals’ date. Two organ builders have been approached to prepare costs and quotations for the possible replacement for the present Compton organ. We are extremely grateful to Dr Andrew Hayden and Mr Ian Angus for their dedicated contributions so far to this project. We have some interest from a school in Harrow for the existing Compton organ. We are currently trying to find patrons for the Organ Replacement Project. Daphne Dell asked about the possibility of organ recitals but unfortunately the current organ is not in a good state of repair. With the new organ we wish to provide scope for educational use. The long-term view is that we may perhaps be without an organ for a considerable time while the project continues. 11) Any Other Business There being no further business the meeting closed at 1.10pm.
