As established by the Bishops, the Clergy, and the Laity of the Protestant Episcopal Church inthe United States of America, in Convention, on the twelfth day of September, in the ear of

    our Lord, !"#!$%%%%%%%%%%

    I. Of Faith in the Holy Trinity.&here is but one living and true 'od, everlasting, without body, parts, or passions( of infinitepower, wisdom, and goodness( the )a*er, and Preserver of all things both visible and invisible$

And in unity of this 'odhead there be three Persons, of one substance, power, and eternity(the +ather, the Son, and the oly 'host$

II. Of the Word or Son of God, which was made very Man.&he Son, which is the -ord of the +ather, begotten from everlasting of the +ather, the very andeternal 'od, and of one substance with the +ather, too* )an.s nature in the womb of theblessed /irgin, of her substance0 so that two whole and perfect 1atures, that is to say, the'odhead and )anhood, were 2oined together in one Person, never to be divided, whereof isone Christ, very 'od, and very )an( who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to

reconcile his +ather to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actualsins of men

III. Of the going down of Christ into Hell.As Christ died for us, and was buried, so also is it to be believed, that he went down into ell$

    I. Of the !es"rrection of Christ.Christ did truly rise again from death, and too* again his body, with flesh, bones, and all thingsappertaining to the perfection of )an.s nature( wherewith he ascended into eaven, and theresitteth, until he return to 2udge all )en at the last day$

    . Of the Holy Ghost.

&he oly 'host, proceeding from the +ather and the Son, is of one substance, ma2esty, andglory, with the +ather and the Son, very and eternal 'od$

    I. Of the S"fficiency of the Holy Scri#t"res for Salvation.oly Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation0 so that whatsoever is not readtherein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be re3uired of any man, that it should bebelieved as an article of the +aith, or be thought re3uisite or necessary to salvation$ 4n thename of the oly Scripture we do understand those canonical Boo*s of the 5ld and 1ew&estament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church$

Of the Names and Number of the Canonical Books.

'enesis, &he +irst Boo* of Samuel, &he Boo* of Esther,

    E6odus, &he Second Boo* of Samuel, &he Boo* of 7ob,Leviticus, &he +irst Boo* of 8ings, &he Psalms,1umbers, &he Second Boo* of 8ings, &he Proverbs,9euteronomy, &he +irst Boo* of Chronicles, Ecclesiastes or Preacher,7oshua, &he Second Boo* of Chronicles, Cantica, or Songs of Solomon,7udges, &he +irst Boo* of Esdras, +our Prophets the greater,:uth, &he Second Boo* of Esdras, &welve Prophets the less$

And the other Boo*s ;as ierome saith< the Church doth read for

e6ample of life and instruction of manners( but yet doth it not applythem to establish any doctrine( such are these following0

All the Boo*s of the 1ew &estament, as they are commonly received, we do receive, and account them Canonical$

II. Of the Old Testament.&he 5ld &estament is not contrary to the 1ew0 for both in the 5ld and 1ew&estament everlasting life is offered to )an*ind by Christ, who is the only )ediatorbetween 'od and )an, being both 'od and )an$ -herefore they are not to beheard, which feign that the old +athers did loo* only for transitory promises$Although the Law given from 'od by )oses, as touching Ceremonies and :ites, donot bind Christian men, nor the Civil precepts thereof ought of necessity to bereceived in any commonwealth( yet notwithstanding, no Christian man whatsoeveris free from the obedience of the Commandments which are called )oral$

    III. Of the Creeds.

&he 1icene Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostles. Creed, ought

thoroughly to be received and believed0 for they may be proved by most certainwarrants of oly Scripture$

&he original Article given :oyal assent in !=>! and reaffirmed in !??@,was entitled 5f the &hree Creeds( and began as follows, &he &hreeCreeds, 1icene Creed, Athanasius.s Creed, and that which is commonlycalled the Apostles. Creed $$$

I$. Of Original or %irth&Sin.5riginal sin standeth not in the following of Adam, ;as the Pelagians do vainly tal*( +or the :ogationdays$

    !" 5f the State of )atrimony$!J 5f :epentance$

    @# Against 4dleness$@! Against :ebellion$

F&his Article is received in this Church, so far as it declares the Boo*s of omilies tobe an e6plication of Christian doctrine, and instructive in piety and morals$ But allreferences to the constitution and laws of England are considered as inapplicable to

the circumstances of this Church( which also suspends the order for the reading ofsaid omilies in churches, until a revision of them may be conveniently made, for

the clearing of them, as well from obsolete words and phrases, as from the localreferences$G

$$$I. Of Consecration of %isho#s and Ministers.&he Boo* of Consecration of Bishops, and 5rdering of Priests and 9eacons, as setforth by the 'eneral Convention of this Church in !>J@, doth contain all things

necessary to such Consecration and 5rdering( neither hath it any thing that, of

itself, is superstitious and ungodly$ And, therefore, whosoever are consecrated orordered according to said +orm, we decree all such to be rightly, orderly, andlawfully consecrated and ordered$

&he original !=>!, !??@ te6t of this Article reads as follows0 &he Boo*of Consecration of Archbishops and Bishops, and 5rdering of Priests and9eacons, lately set forth in the time of Edward the Si6th, and confirmedat the same time by authority of Parliament, doth contain all thingsnecessary to such Consecration and 5rdering0 neither hath it any thing,

that of itself is superstitious and ungodly$ And therefore whosoever areconsecrated or ordered according to the :ites of that Boo*, since the

second year of the forenamed 8ing Edward unto this time, or hereafter

shall be consecrated or ordered according to the same :ites( we decreeall such to be rightly, orderly, and lawfully consecrated and ordered$

$$$II. Of the *ower of the Civil Magistrates.&he Power of the Civil )agistrate e6tendeth to all men, as well Clergy as Laity, in allthings temporal( but hath no authority in things purely spiritual$ And we hold it tobe the duty of all men who are professors of the 'ospel, to pay respectfulobedience to the Civil Authority, regularly and legitimately constituted$

    &he original !=>!, !??@ te6t of this Article reads as follows0 &he 8ing.s

)a2esty hath the chief power in this :ealm of England, and other his9ominions, unto whom the chief 'overnment of all Estates of this:ealm, whether they be Ecclesiastical or Civil, in all causes dothappertain, and is not, nor ought to be, sub2ect to any foreign7urisdiction$ -here we attribute to the 8ing.s )a2esty the chiefgovernment, by which &itles we understand the minds of someslanderous fol*s to be offended( we give not our Princes the ministeringeither of 'od.s -ord, or of the Sacraments, the which thing the4n2unctions also lately set forth by EliDabeth our Kueen do most plainly

testify( but that only prerogative, which we see to have been givenalways to all godly Princes in holy Scriptures by 'od himself( that is,

that they should rule all estates and degrees committed to their charge

by 'od, whether they be Ecclesiastical or &emporal, and restrain withthe civil sword the stubborn and evildoers$

&he Bishop of :ome hath no 2urisdiction in this :ealm of England$

&he Laws of the :ealm may punish Christian men with death, forheinous and grievous offences$

4t is lawful for Christian men, at the commandment of the )agistrate, towear weapons, and serve in the wars$

$$$III. Of Christian Men0s Goods, which are not common.&he :iches and 'oods of Christians are not common, as touching the right, title,

and possession of the same( as certain Anabaptists do falsely boast$1otwithstanding, every man ought, of such things as he possesseth, liberally to

give alms to the poor, according to his ability$

$$$I$. Of a Christian Man0s Oath.As we confess that vain and rash Swearing is forbidden Christian men by our Lord7esus Christ, and 7ames his Apostle, so we 2udge, that Christian :eligion doth notprohibit, but that a man may swear when the )agistrate re3uireth, in a cause offaith and charity, so it be done accor
