What Kind of Defense Will We Haveorder to have a great defense, you know we must have great pursuit and gang tackling. What we will need to do in practice in order

have great pursuit and gang tackling.

We must be in top condition physically and mentally. This will mean a lot of running and film viewing.

    A. We will run a lot of sprints - for endurance and speed.

    B. You must force yourself to run hard.

    C. Every time you run a sprint, you are either running for a better or poorer team.

We must swarm the ball and be sharp in practice.

    A. Everyone is required to break the huddle sharp.

    B. You play the way you practice.

We will practice tackling, particularly open field, every day.

We must play the ball on pass defense

We must have great pride and confidence in each other and in our POSt Defense.

"What the mind can conceive and believe the body can achieve"

    s i c P r o c e s s o f D e f e n s eConditioning

    A) Proceeds everything else.

    B) Give you a chance'to play hard

    C) Physical conditioning proceeds mental toughness

    D) Don't sacrifice quickness for speed

    Simplicity

    A) Must be built into your package.

    B) Gives you a chance to be aggressive. (How does the player see things and reacts?)

    C) Eliminate the big play. (Hustle and Effort)

    D) Simple ways to gamble

    Play percentage football

    A) Don't beat yourself (Field Position)

    B) Don't panic. have a plan and believe in it

    C) Control the sudden charge. (Prepare for the psychological up lift and let down)

    Work on The Intangibles.

    A) Discipline

    B) Toughness

    1) Built into your system

    2) Don't expect things to just happen

    C) Morale

    1) A Game is played with the heart and the mind

    D) Incentives

    1) Goal boards, big plays, big hits. "Recognize the great effort"

    Successful Practice

    A) Tempo - everyone on the same page.

    B) Teach fundamentals - you have theoretically the best system in the world, but how well the system operates is how

    well you execute the fundamentals

    1) How well do they move

    2) How well do they tackle

    C) Create in practice the situation the team will face in the game and repeat it until he can react by remote memory.

    D) Know what you want to get accomplished

    1) Script

    2) Zone and segment planning

    3) Proper use of scout squads

From a team of winners, surround yourself with players and people to whom football means a lot

Accentuate the team. Everybody who is out there is there to se how much he can contribute to the team.

To be a good football team, you must place special emphasis on the following things. You will be working on these every day in

practice. It will be very repetitious and some times monotonous, but you as a football player must mentally prepare yourself to work

hard every day. You can't loaf through them or toward the middle of the season you will go down hill as a player. The only way to

improve on them is to continually work on them and we know from experience as coaches that mental discipline, keys, technique,

quickness, tackling and constancy are the most important things to have a good defense. If they weren't, we wouldn't spend every day

    in practice on them.

Practice Makes Perfect, But Only If You Practice Perfect

    1. Heart: No matter what your size or ability, without heart, the following are of no consequence.

    2. Discipline: Discipline means you do it the coaches way. Your way may work and it may not work. Coaching is our

profession and through experience we know our way will work. Discipline keeps you from acquiring bad habits that will in

turn hurt you and the team's performance. Your discipline will give you the strength to overcome adversity.

We as a coaching staff do not demand discipline to build our image as tough guys. Discipline is for the reasons mentioned

above and most of all so that we, as a staff, can be fair and honest with the players whether they be a 1st teamer, 2nd teamer

or a third teamer. The best way to accomplish that is to treat everyone fairly and the only way to do that is to have

    discipline.

    3. Mental Discipline:

    A) You must be mentally ready to play as well as physically.

    B) Be on time for meetings, practice and etc. This will carry right on to the practice field and will make you a better

    player.

    C) You cannot make mental mistakes. One mental mistake by one player can mean a touchdown or as in most cases,

keeps a drive going that results in a TD.

    D) A mental mistake usually results from not concentrating in your meeting, in practice or not studying your game

    plan

    E) Learn your assignments during the week so on Saturdays or scrimmage days you won't be confused and can react

    and be aggressive

    4. Physical Discipline

    A) Not everyone can play the game of football. You have a responsibility to the University and to your teammates by

being a member of the post football team.

    B) Discipline yourself to stay in shape throughout the whole year

    C) Push yourself when working on sprints, distance and weights

    D) Discipline yourself to play with pain. If injured, we do not expect you to play. Remember, there is a difference

between pain and injury. Your great players and teams know the difference.

    5. Technique

A)This is the next thing that will happen to you after you read your keys.

    B) Take people on tough. Control the LOS and the receivers.

    C) Be aggressive in your technique and don't just control the offensive man, but intimidate him.

    D) Concentrate every day in practice and your technique will improve

    E) A good technique defense can line up and tell the offense to come block you and still beat them

    F) Defend your territory

    6. Quickness

    A) After your key and your play technique, then immediately your quickness becomes important.

    B) You can never be too quick; this will improve if you work hard in practice.

    C) It's possible to give up some size and strength for quickness and play. You can never give up quickness for size

    or strength tough.

    D) Agility and quick drills - bags, ropes and etc. Work hard on these every day. You will become quicker throughout

the season if you hustle through these each day. All these drills will improve your feet.

7.TacklingA) Intimidate people every play and out hit them.

    B) Once you see the ball, all 11 defensive players come full speed, not half- speed. You've got to want to get in on

    the hit or make it.

    C) Gang Tackle - This is what defense is all about. You can't beat a defense that has everyone going full speed to the

carrier and as many people that can, hit him until he is down or the whistle blows. This is where your defense

gains respect. You do this every Saturday and people will let down when they play you. An assisted tackle is just

as important as a solo tackle. If your an aggressive football player, you will have allot of total tackles.

    D) Be tough, but respected

    The Hats Are Coming

    S . Consistency

    A) All of the above are no good if you don't do them every day

    R) This is the kev to heino a oreat nlaver or havino a omit defence

  • 8/11/2019 44 defense pt.1

    9/42

    C) You cannot be a winner if you are an up and down player from day to day or from week to week.

    D) Discipline yourself to be consistent every day. Work hard to improve and you will be more consistent - you will be

    consistently better.

What it Takes to Pursue at C.W. Post

1 . Pursuit is probably the most important part of defensive football.

    2. What pursuit doesa) Eliminates long TD's (The Big Play)

    b) Discourages your opponents (especially the ball carrier)

    c) Helps to cover any possible mistakes in our defense (help your teammate)

    d) Make us the best team defense in division II

    3. What it takes to pursue

    a) Pursuit is first a mental process (if you want to. you can)

    b) Visualize pursuing and making great plays (Be a Big Play Guy)

    c) Physical conditioning is necessary so you can have great pursuit each play (must get to every play, no matter where you

    are at)

    d) Speed (think fast and quickly) we can all improve our speed and quickness.

    e) Get off blocks -- get to the ball

    4. How to pursue

    a) Play your responsibility first

    b) Take correct course to ball

    c) Wanting to get there (Mental)

Our Goal Is To Be The Best Division II Pursuit Team

    Tackling

DefinitionA tackle is a collision between the defensive man and the ball carrier in which you must win

ObjectiveTo stop the ball carrier for no gain. In each game we will be involved with at least 100 tackling opportunities. To achieve maximum

results, we must be successful in at least 95% of our initial opportunities. Therefore, tackling is most important technique to be

    perfected by practice.

Types of Tackles1 . Straight on

    2. Side3. Boundary

    4. Open Field

    5. Desperation

Situations That You Are Involved In When Tackling A Ball Carrier

    1 . 1 on1

    2. First man after defeating blocker

    3. Second or third man ( pursuit)

    4. Back running high

    5. Back running Low

    6. Receiver catching the ball in the air

    7. Back catching the ball out of the backfield

    8. Back hurdling or leaping

    9. Catching man from behind

    10. Stripping the ball

We Will Practice Daily The Above Types Of Tackles With The Greatest Emphasis Being On The Open Hold Tackle

    Technique

    1. A correct tackle incorporates the fundamentals of the:

    a) Approach

    b) Collision

    c) Finish

    Tackling Progression

The most difficult tackle is the open field tackle. therefore, a fundamental teaching progression to insure the ability to make open field

tackle will be given. This teaching sequence begins with the

1 . Fit - Place yourself in the quarter eagle position. (Knees bent back flat head up shoulder pad on the numbers, arms

wrapped, and hips extended with the body at a 45 degree angle. Once you assumed the ideal position, you then have a

model to strive for. (Visualize this position)

    2. Collision - The collision is the coordinated skill of making contact in the correct position while exploding the hips, thrusting the arms, and utilizing the power of the lower back and legs. The arms and legs are utilized in four steps:

    A) As contact is made thrust arms in an upward direction around the ball carrier

    B) Wrap the arms around his back

    C) Pull the ball carrier toward you

    D) If you can not lock your hands grab cloth with your fingers and

    SQUEEZE - SQUEEZE - SQUEEZE

    Fnish

The combination of the collision and the leg drive allows the tackler to finish the ball carrier by placing him on his back

    Approach

Once the fit collision and finish have been taught. We will concentrate on the approach. The single most important skill to be learnedi

the breakdown. As you approach the ball carrier, gather your momentum, assume a good football position with the feet chopping,

close the distance between you and the ball carrier, and concentrate on the numbers. Your point of aim should be your shoulder pad oa

the inside number for side tackles. The approach is divided into five situations:

    A) Straight on

    B) Side

    C) Boundary

    D) Open Field

    E) Desperation

    Visualize the Big Hit

    A) Keep your Head up

    B) Explode

    C) Rip your arms

    D) Squeeze your fingers

    E) Drive your legs

    F) Don't close your legs

    G) Don't cross over

    H) Don't hit with your head

    I) Good base

aching The Proper Technique Provides You With The Fundamentals, However, You Will Not Make The Tackle Unless You Want To

    Make The Open Held Tackle

losophy of Defensemain objective on defense is to keep the opponent from scoring and gain possession of the football for our offense with good field

ion. Your job as a defensive player is to carry out the team defense and go all out every play. While defense requires an all - out

t by each individual on every play. This effort must be coordinated into a team performance. You must strive for the success as an

vidual but always with discipline and within the framework of the team defense.

The Quickest way to obtain possession of the football is to force a turnover. This can be accomplished best by tough,

aggressive play, with all out pursuit and gang tackling.

1 . Knock the ball loose - gang tackling

    2. Interceptions

    caused by:

    A) Forcing the passer to throw off - balance and early.

    B) Great ball reaction and aggressive play for the ball.

    3. Their mishandling of the football (fumbles)

    A) Always be alert for the loose ball

Force them to give up the ball after third down.

1 . Prevent the big play and hold opponent to minimum of yards on each play

    2. Eliminate all mental mistakes

    3. Play team defense4. Maintain poise and confidence

    5. Tackle

When sudden change or Goalline situation occurs we must mentally arise to the occasion

I . Gain control of your thoughts and take the field with confidence this is the true test situation of a great defense

    2. Accept the challenge and when you stop them now, you and your team will have even a greater psychological

    advantage

A good football team creates opportune situations and thinks in terms of scoring when on defense.

    I. Interception return

    2. Blocked punt return

    3. Blocked field goal attempt return

    4. Punt return

    5. Tackling ball carrier in their end zone - Safety6 . Advance a fumble in mid - air

n though the defensive team may not score by such defensive maneuvers, the value of such defensive plays can not be

restimated. For a team that can take advantage of such breaks it provides a spark which often leads to a team "catching fire"

kScheme - Blitz (at least make it look that way) complicates QB and OL hit the QB (sacks and pressure)

Technique - Aggressive DL play (let them go - no reading) Not a "Protect LB" defense, Man to Man challenge the

    receivers

    The Run

8 Man front (G = defend outside run, tuff = defend inside runs)

    - Speed and Quickness (personnel and relentless pursuit)

Out number blocker with defenders (with a free hitter)

Limit offensive game plan (forced to "package" plays based on front)

Verse G = few outside runs or SE runs, more CTR's and cutbacks, more A-Gap runs and quick pass game

Verse Tuff = few inside runs, more options SE, more pick plays (pass)

. Our opponent is moving the ball against us and appears to be gaining momentum.

. Our opponent has possession inside our ten yardline

. Our opponent has gained possession or excellent field position through an interception, fumble recovery, long return, or

    blocked kick.

. The last two minutes of the half or the game and we are protecting the lead.

The way a team responds to these situations is an indication of an attitude. When a group of losers faces one of these situations. They

mmediately begin pointing fingers at teammates and feeling sorry for themselves. The winners approach and the Post approach will be

o accept these trouble situations as a challenge and an opportunity to show our defensive greatness. Through concentration and a

ommitment to a meaningful plan. We will be able to overcome these "Trouble Situations" and control the out come of the game. Our

plan on handling "Trouble Situations" successfully will commonly be refereed to as our "1-A" plan and is comprised of four basic

    ments:

    One Play at a Time

    Assignment

    . Alignment

    & Aggressive

n a "Trouble Situation" each player must take the four elements of"l-A" and apply them to his own performance to insure the success

    f our entire defense

    One Play at a Time

Each individual on the defense must play the next play as the most important play of the entire game. We must maintain our intensity

on every play. To prevent them from scoring requires your total concentration and intensity on each play.

    Assignment

Each player must know the specific detail of his assignment when he leaves the huddle. Do not take it upon yourself to "guess" because

our teammates are relying on you to know and carry out your assignment as we all understand it.

    lignment

Everyone must line up exactly where our defense call requires that you be. Each alignment position has been established to give you

he greatest opportunity to succeed in carrying out your assignment within the structure of that defense

    Aggressive

On the snap, carry out your.

responsibility aggressively. Do not be cautious and concerned that you might break down. Aggressiveness

will overcome many things and there is no substitute for it when it is carried out as a part of a meaningful plan.

The success of a Division II requires the dedication and concentration of each member of our defensive unit

    The Approach To Successful Defense

    Work

While there are many things that contribute to a successful team defense, by far the most important is for all defensive players to be

fundamentally sound in the techniques of their individual position. No matter what our defensive alignments or philosophy, Our defense

will be only as strong as the individuals that make it up. Each player must constantly strive to improve the individual techniques he

must perform. In general the way a team plays is the way it practices. Each practice should be a challenge for self improvement in

some phase of defensive technique. We all must pay the price to be a winner.

t is obvious there are many key qualities in a good defensive unit that results in total team success. Most important is everyone's

mental approach. In summary, everyone must play better than he is. Our Average football players have to play good. Our Good

football players have to play great and our great football players have to play great every down. "Making the Team" is not enough.

Making a winning team" has got to be our objective.

    Trouble Situations

n virtually every game, our defense will be faced with several difficult situations. We refer to these situations as Trouble Situations andhe way we handle these three or four plays or perhaps a series of plays, will usually determine the outcome of the game. These

    ituations fall into several situations.
