esde cedo que Paulo do Vale encon-trou a sua vocação na oficina de ouri-ves. Ao labor quotidiano de artesãoe ao trabalho criativo em projecto,junta a dedicação graciosa à manu-tenção do tesouro do Senhor SantoCristo dos Mila gres e ao ofício de

avaliador oficial e ensaiador da Casa da Moeda. Como artis-ta, tem tido um percurso reconhecidamente invulgar, ape-sar da sua juventude e da insularidade. Foi, no entanto, em2004, que surgiu a grande novidade: Paulo do Vale descobreo “ouro negro dos Açores”.Não sendo Portugal um país produtor de materiais gemoló-gicos, foi com agrado que o artista reconheceu a beleza e aspotencialidades do basalto insular, quando aplicado em jóiasde prata e de ouro de tradição portuguesa. O basalto, umaconhecida rocha vulcânica negra, não é, gemologicamentefalando, uma pedra preciosa, nem um material nobre tra-dicional. Todavia, no contexto em que Paulo do Vale o uti-liza nas suas criações, passa a ter um valor quase mítico: éum pouco dos Açores e de Portugal que ali está. THE AZORES’ BLACK GOLD There isgold in the Azores and it’s black! It’s not the goldand noble metal, nor the increasingly rare hidro-carbonate! It’s the Azorean basalt of uniquejewels, created with the quality seal of artistPaulo do Vale. Paulo do Vale found his vocation as a jewe-ller at an early age. To the daily labour as a craftsman and the cre-ative work in projects, he adds his gracious dedication to the main-tenance of the treasure of the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres andthe trade of official evaluator at the Casa da Moeda mint. As anartist, he has had an uncommon route, despite his youth and ori-gin. It was, however, in 2004 that the big news arrived: Paulo do Vale discovers the “black gold of the Azores”.With Portugal not being a producer of gems, the artist was pleasedto see the beauty and potential of the basalt, when applied to sil-ver and gold jewels with Portuguese tradition. The basalt, a knownblack volcanic rock, is not a precious stone, nor a noble traditionalmaterial.However, in the context in which Paulo do Vale uses it in his cre-ations, it almost has a mythical value: there is a bit of the Azoresand Portugal in there. This played a strong part in the selection ofone of his necklaces as a State Gift to the Queen of Jordan, duringthe Portuguese President’s visit to the Middle Eastern country.

Working the jewels not only as fashion accessories, but also assymbolic elements, sometimes even as talismans, the fact that inthem is materialised a portion of the motherland confers on thema singular meaning of great nobility, thus the expression “black gold”.Besides this interesting symbolism, to the value of the pieces isadded his manual labour, in the oldest tradition of Azorean jewe-llery-making and their enrichment by the application of other gemssuch as diamonds.The design, simplicity and modernity of these unrepeatable pieces haveearned recognition at various levels, not only in the successive partici-pation at spaces for new creation at Portugal’s most important jewe-llery fair Portjóia, and with prizes such as 1st place in the VIP Jóiasof 2006 contest and a honorouble 3rd place in the jewellery designcontest at the Portuguese Presidency Museum in 2007. In 2008, hewon the contest promoted by the Berardo Museum beating 200 otherdesigners, some of them international.

ó depois de ter feito uma viagemà volta do mundo é que perce-beu que o fado seria uma opçãode carreira, porquê?Ainda não estava preparada paracantar. Uma viagem dessas é umaconstrução interior, passa por criar

um pouco de humanidade, por ter consciência do outro.Cantar é dar alguma coisa. É oferecer. Necessitei de ga -nhar mais abrangência para chegar ao íntimo das pes-soas. Percebi a minha vocação. Foi uma descoberta.Prefere atuar numa casa de fados ou num gran-de palco?Tenho prazeres muito grandes em todos os palcos. O fadovive muito da troca de energia. É normal que numacasa de fados essa experiência aconteça de forma espe-cialmente intensa. Mas também se consegue num gran-de palco, com a soma da energia vinda de tanta gente.

O que mudoufoi a forma como as pessoas passaram a encarar o fado.E também o mundo, em toda a sua conjuntura social eeconómica. Neste momento, sentimos que devemospartir em busca das raízes, do que é mais genuíno epuro. Cada vez mais preferimos consumir o que é nosso.A melancolia do fado faz parte da cultura portu-guesa?Faz parte da nossa genética. As pessoas gostam de fadoporque lhes toca ou porque as magoa muito. It’s a different emotion becausepeople, who are not familiar with our culture, do notspeak our language and, suddenly, find an incredibledimension in fado. What do you thinkhas contributed to this new interest in fado?The music hasn’t changed. Fado remains the same. Whathas changed is the way people have come to view fado.The world has also changed socially and economically.Right now, we feel that we have to go and look for ourroots, for what is more genuine and pure. More and morewe prefer what is ours.Is fado’s melancholy part of the Portuguese cul-ture?It’s genetic. People like fado because they are moved byit or because it hurts them a lot. Fado always has an extra-ordinary, violent impact. This is one of its beauties inwhich we can find identification with ourselves. We are,in a way, nostalgic; we are prone to pessimism. Despitefado never stopped being joyful and colorful. It has to dowith a harder moment in our life, but it also has to dowith the popular feasts, with effusive, joyful feelings. It’sonly now that people are discovering it.She was in a duet with Spanish singer PabloAlborán, which was a huge success in termsof albums sold, and her dream is to singwith Chico Buarque.

distância entre S. Miguel e SantaMaria nunca foi tão curta comoagora. Entre os dias 25 de maioe 1 de junho uma numerosa,alegre e representativa embaixa-da mariense desembarcou noaeroporto João Paulo II e diri-giu-se para as Portas do Mar,

com a intenção de promover a sua ilha junto dos vizi -nhos micaelenses. A ambiciosa acção de charme cum-priu os seus objectivos, atraindo numeroso público edando visibilidade a tudo aquilo que torna Santa Mariaum destino diferente, atraente e acessível. Foram orga-nizadas diversas acções promocionais e exposições queilustraram o “espírito” da ilha e divulgaram o que demelhor ela tem para oferecer aos visitantes. No de correrda semana os marienses cativaram também os micae-lenses com uma mostra do seu artesanato e da sua culi-nária (o ponto alto foram as sopas do Império, servidasna segunda-feira do Espírito Santo a mais de mil e tre-zentas pessoas).

Thedistance between São Miguel and Santa Maria has neverbeen as short. Between the 25th May and 1st June anumerous, joyful Mariense representation has disem-barked at João Paulo II airport and headed to Portas doMar with the intention of promoting their island amongtheir neighbors from São Miguel.. The ambitious charmaction has attained its objectives by attracting a largepublic and giving visibility to all which makes SantaMaria a different, attractive and accessible destination.Several promotional activities took place as well asexhibitions to illustrate the “spirit” of the island anddivulge the best if what of has to offer its visitors.Throughout the week , the inhabitants of Santa Mariaalso captivated the people of São Miguel by showingtheir crafts and cuisine ( the highlight were the Impériosoups, served on the Monday of the Holy Spirit to morethan a thousand and three hundred people)..

Em Ponta Delgada os marienses divulgaram ocartaz destes eventos, que atraem cada vez mais públi-co em São Miguel. A ilha de Gonçalo Velho aprovei-tou também a oportunidade para trazer a sua músicaaté às Portas do Mar. Durante uma semana a animaçãoe boa disposição reinou, provando a todos que SantaMaria é muito mais do que a ilha ao lado.

Santa Maria is a land of young spirits and the cycleof life on the island has a rhythm of its own, live-ned by a series of festivals and concerts of great qua-lity. In Ponta Delgada ,the people of Santa Mariadivulged the program of these events which attractmore and more public to São Miguel. The Island ofGonçalo Velho, also took the opportunity to bringits music to Portas do Mar. For a week the animationand good mood reigned, proving to everyone thatSanta Maria is much more than just a neighboringisland.

Manuel Eduardo Vieira, conhecidocomo o “rei da batata-doce”, nasceu na ilha doPico. Emigrou para o Brasil e, posteriormente,para os EUA, onde lidera o grupo económicoconsiderado o maior produtor e distribuidor debatata-doce biológica do mundo. Reconhecido anível do governo federal dos EUA, é igualmenteum líder comunitário. Recentemente, foi

agraciado pela Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dosAçores que lhe atribuiu a insígnia autonómica de mérito industrial,comercial e agrícola.

Manuel Eduardo Vieira, known as the "king of sweet potato",was born in the island of Pico. Manuel Vieira first emigrated to Brazil andlater to the U.S, where he leads an economic group considered the largestproducer and distributor of organic sweet potatoes in the world. Recognizedin the U.S. at the federal government level, he is also a community leader.Recently, Manuel Vieira was honored by the Legislative Assembly of theAutonomous Region of the Azores, which awarded him the autonomicinsignia of industrial, commercial and agricultural merit.

Emeril Lagasse nasceu em Fall River,Massachusetts, EUA, descendente de mãenatural da ilha de S. Miguel. Atualmente éconsiderado como um dos chefes de cozinhamais afamados nos EUA. Para além da sua redede restaurantes,  é proprietário de um canal detelevisão dedicado à gastronomia e culinária,onde apresenta uma vasta programação.A revista Time classificou o programa “Essence

Inaddition to its restaurant franchise, Emerill Lagasse owns a televisionnetwork dedicated to food and cooking. Time magazine named his show,"The Essence of Emeril", one of the top 10 television shows. Lagasse haslaunched his own line of cookware "Emerilware", and is the author of the

bestseller New Orleans Cooking. In 2002, Lagasse created the "EmerilLagasse Foundation" which seeks the promotion of educational nutritionand cooking shows for children.

Miguel. A camelliasinensis, apesar da excelente adaptação ao solo e climaaçorianos, era até então uma planta decorativa semqualquer vantagem económica, pois os agricultoreslocais desconheciam as técnicas de apanha e secagemque transformavam as suas folhas no tão apreciadochá. Procurando ultrapassar esta lacuna, Ernesto doCanto propôs à Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura,em Novembro de 1873, “o contrato de um china que entrenós montasse o serviço da manipulação do chá”.

HOW TEA BEGAN TO BE CULTI-VATED ON THE ISLAND OF SÃOMIGUEL A group of local gentlemen far-mers anticipated the end of the orange cycleand looked for alternative crops to launch anew cycle of agricultural prosperity on theisland.The climatization of the camellia sinensis in the Azoresdates back to the 19th century, but it was only as fromthe early 1870s and by the initiative of the SociedadePromotora da Agricultura Micaelense, that the efforts tointroduce the growing and production of tea started on theIsland of São Miguel. This association, founded in 1843by a group of local gentlemen farmers, anticipated the endof the orange’s economical cycle – whose export to GreatBritain produced income in the early 19th century – andto look for alternative crops which would relaunch a newcycle of agricultural prosperity on the Island of São Miguel.The camellia sinensis, despite the excellent adaptation tothe Azorean soil and climate was, until then, a decora-tive plant with no economical advantage, because localfarmers ignored the techniques of the picking and dryingof the leaves which transformed them in the much appre-ciated tea. Miguel– desempenhar então ocargo de Diretor das ObrasPúblicas em Macau,Ernesto do Canto solici-tou os seus bons ofíciospara a contratação de doisespecialistas chineses.Após um complexo pro-cesso burocrático, queenvolveu escrituras nota-riais redigidas em chinêse português, AugustoSupico anunciava emcarta datada de Macau, 13

proposed the Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura, inNovember 1873, “hiring a Chinese who among us wouldput up the handling of tea”.Taking advantage of the fact that Augusto César Supico– an Engineer Major with ties to the island of São Miguel– was at the time the Director of Public Works in Macao,Ernesto do Canto requested his good offices in the hiringtwo Chinese specialists. After a complex bureaucraticprocess, which involved notarial deeds written in Chineseand Portuguese, Augusto Supico announced in a letterdated Macao, November 13th 1877, the good news to hisfriends from São Miguel: “ Two Chinamen have beenhired to go over and experiment the growing and produc-tion of tea. I have just signed, as a witness, the contractestablished between them and the Governor [of Macao],in the name of the Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura.The duration of the contract is one year (…) they aretaking seeds of the bush and models of all the tools nee-ded for the job (…). One of them the master’s assistant,can speak Portuguese and some English (…) The mas-ter will be earning 40 dollars a month and the assistant

cadeado pelo inquilino a quem pertencia (o senhoriotinha gazua e gostava de ir meter o nariz, para azeitar achocalhice e sublinhar a traço grosso, grosseiro, o seupoder de proprietário: isto que está aqui é muito meu, osuor do meu trabalho, suor que não fedia, por via dodesodorizante... No quintal, o dono desforrava-se: se otenant cultivava nabiças, couves-galegas, pepinos, bata-ta doce, e outros mimos das Ilhas, aderidos ao prece den -te paladar, o landlord achava-se no direito de levar oque bem quisesse. Alguns dos rendeiros até ficavamhonrados com o gesto, só o Pintassilgo cresceu para oseu senhorio, sacho em punho, chamou-lhe ladrão, masacrescentou de consciência, não fosse a Justiça mor-der-lhe nas canelas. A paga chegou de supetão: olhoda rua, que a casa não é tua... Contrato de arrenda-mento para quê? E a liberdade do dono e senhor? OPintassilgo foi chilrear para outra gaiola... O bloco de residências situava-se na Main Street, títu-lo de romance traduzido por Rua Principal... Teriasido mais curial Rua Direita! O prédio de ma deira, tá buas

compri das ou shin glessobre postos, tal qual osgra néis da Ilha, comoalguém apelidou as

casas america nas: maisfeias que os nos sosgranéis, dois pisos (o rés-do-chão não en tra na tabuada

Santa Cruz; se houvesse castelo, desmaiar-lhe-ia nosbraços, que ali há grandes suspiros românticos...Naco de terra cingido de água e de lindezas aprimo-radas nos cartazes turísticos e no robusto lirismo depoetas e cantores, a Ilha foi nada e criada num terrei-ro de abalos, emigrações e migrações; a Rua Direitaespreguiça-se, pausada, da igreja até ao mar. Nessa jáinexistente Rua Direita, alinhavam-se as casas mais afi-dalgadas, apalaçadas, apalhaçadas, mui poucas já comretretes portas a dentro, fedorentas, luxuosas nessetempo de geral miséria cercada de luxuriantes belezasencantadas; o passal; uma mercearia fina, fundadaem 1875, o tendeiro, luva branca e guarda-pó de ris-cadinho, à porta o calhambeque de capota, Dodge, daGuerra de Catorze; sobre o balcão, uma balança Avery,branca, autografada pelo mosquedo (havia uma rival,em outra venda, Recsi, vermelho-escuro metalizado,concitando simpatizantes e adversários quer de umaou outra: os ilhéus pelam-se por tomar partido). Numa das adegas, um quadro pintado por um sargen-to do Regimento de Beja representava uma vasta pla-nura alentejana, o trigo maduro pedindo a sua ceifa,o sol erguendo-se, esbraseado, no horizonte, e umaceifeira, foice em punho, chapéu de palha por cimade um lenço vermelho, atado no queixo, cobria-lheparte do rosto e todo o pescoço. No cimo, uma faixadizia: Alentejo, Celeiro de Portugal... De lá chegarammuitos migrantes. No início do povoamento e duran-te a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Depois de ilhados,retornaram alguns, um século depois, à origem (Niza,Castelo de Vide), onde ainda se fala um alentejanocom aroma a magma), os ficantes retroverteram-se emimigrantes e, mais tarde, ajudaram-se, sozinhos, aobaú e ao guarda-sol emigrante (Domingos Rebelo).Chegaram em caravelas para povoar a Ilha, cheiran-do ainda a achamento novo. Prima irmã do mar querodeia a ínsula de ondas inchadas (as inchas), a pla-nura alentejana transcreveu a ondulação do oceanopara as searas e tornou-se Ilha gémea, mar e ondasde terra e enormes searas de vento...

In thatno longer existent Rua Direita, there were the nobler, palace-like, clownish-like houses, very few with indoor WCs, smelly,luxurious back then when there was a lot of poverty surroun-ded by luxurious and enchanting beauties; the priest’s court-yard; a delicatessen, founded on 1875, the employee, in whitegloves and striped work coat, the convertible Dodge datingback to the First World War at the door; on the counter, anAvery scale, covered with fly excrements (there was a rivalscale in another store, a Recsi, a metalized dark red, there wereadmirers and contenders of both: islanders love to take sides).In one of the cellars, a painting painted by a sergeant of theBeja Regiment represented a vast plain in the Alentejo, the ripewheat waiting to be reaped, the blazing sun in the horizon, awoman reaper, holding a sickle, a straw hat over a red scarf,tied under her chin covered part of her face and all of her neck.At the top of the painting were the words: Alentejo, Portugal’sBarn… A lot of migrants came from there, in the beginning ofthe settlements and during the Second World War. After livingon the islands, some returned, a century later to their originaltowns. (Niza, Castelo de Vide), where a Portuguese of Alentejostill has some touches of Azorean. Those who had stayedbehind became immigrants and, later, helped themselves on theirown to the chest and emigrant parasol (Domingos Rebelo).They arrived in caravels to populate the Island which had veryrecently been discovered. With strong ties to the sea surroun-ding the isles of swollen waves (the inchas), the Alentejo plaintranscribed the sea waves into the fields and became a twinIsland – sea and waves of land and vast fields of wind…
