11-15 October 2010, Xi’An, Shaanxi Province, China
Stakeholder Workshop 2 – Selection and decision support
Aim: Select jointly 1-2 options from the WOCAT database to be implemented
under DESIRE framework and to strengthen collaboration among the
stakeholders involved
WS duration: Two days; 19-20 February 2009
Participants: 12 participants (67% were male and 83% were from local level)
Main aim concerning SLM identified in the WS1: Reduction of the
burned area
Problem: Few technologies in the WOCAT database to mitigate or prevent
burned area
Need to document several technologies to address this problem

Stakeholder Workshop 2 – Selection and decision support
Overlap between the technologies
Three of them are located above 0,5 - good options concerning sustainable
development
There is no clear identification of the best technology
The participants concluded that all the technologies are important to achieve
the objective – reduce burned area
Selection of options
Identification of economic, social and ecological criteria to evaluate the options
Scoring the options and ranking using the Facilitator
Final decision – Which technologies should be field-tested?

LANDCON 1010
International Conference on Combating Land Degradation and Annual Councilor Meeting of WASWAC
11-15 October 2010, Xi’An, Shaanxi Province, China
The WS initiative and methodology were highly appreciated;
The methods promoted equal participation and an informal work
environment;
The field visits are very important, since they have the potential of
putting technical, scientific and local knowledge together;
There is a high expectation in the implementation of these
technologies, however the short financial capacity is a huge constraint.
Lessons learned from this approach… stakeholders’ visions
A third workshop to evaluate the technologies implementation;
The need of further discussion and research on these topics.
Lessons learned from this approach… in the future
