The original ink drawing hasn’treally changed. Today, instead,the large sculpture version
welcomes visitors to HR Giger‘smuseum ready to propel them intoa phantasmagoric universe. Theinherent threat of the bas-relief – acutaway of a Walther pistol – maysurprise you. The reality the piecerefers to is much more than Giger’spassion for weapons. Birth hasbecome a massacre game. Whatis born today is dead tomorrow,sums up Giger laconically. HisBirth Machine is an implacablemechanism, cold and inescapable,which can’t jam. The baby car-tridges with expressionless faces,hidden mysteriously behind theirairtight glasses, hold deadlyweapons in their hands in order tokeep in-check overpopulation.This weapon dispenses life anddeath, simultaneously. When thetrigger is pulled, the bullet sepa-rates from the cartridge and, thus,decapitates the body. The babieswith feathers in their metal head-bands (Biomechanoid I) give wayto their stillborn and more radicalsuccessors, lodged snugly in amechanism which is neither arbi-trary nor free. Machine dominatesthe human in a concept of the NewOrder, which is about to be created.
Le dessin originel à l’encre dechine n’a que peu changé. Il aaujourd’hui laissé place à une
grande sculpture qui accueille levisiteur du Musée HR Giger. Prêt àpropulser le promeneur dans ununivers fantasmagorique, le bas-relief étonne par sa violence (c’estun pistolet Walther intégré à lagrande pyramide de Khéops, cf HRGiger ARh+). L’on connaît la pas-sion des armes qui anime HR Giger.Mais on est aussi surpris par laréalité à laquelle il fait référence.La naissance devient un jeu demassacre. Une vie qui vient c’estune mort pour demain, résume HRGlaconiquement. Le mécanisme estimplacable, froid et inéluctable. Ilne peut s’enrayer. Les cartouchessont mystérieuses, cachées derriè-re leurs lunettes hermétiques, sansexpression sur le visage, et tien-nent déjà à la main une arme mor-telle, comme pour répandre au loinla surpopulation. Mais cette armeest aussi une machine qui répand àla fois la vie et la mort car enappuyant sur la gachette, la ballese sépare de la cartouche, la têteest arrachée du corps. Les bébésindiens au front cerclé de métal(Biomechanoid I) ont laissé place àdes successeurs morts-nés, enco-re plus froids, plus radicaux. La froi-deur d’un tel mécanisme n’est pasgratuite, ni même innocente. Lamachine domine l’être humain.Conception d’un nouvel ordre entrain de se créer.

Die originale Tuschzeichnung,die 1967 entstand, hat sichkaum verändert, als sie im
Jahr 2000 zu einer grossenReliefskulptur umgewandelt wurde.Diese empfängt nun die Besucheram Haupteingang des HR Giger-Museums. Beim Motiv handelt essich um einen Schnitt durch einegeladene Walther-Pistole P 38. Siewird zum Symbol für ein Leben, dasbereits bei dessen Geburt letztlich
nur den Tod bringen kann, wie HRGlakonisch feststellt. DerMechanismus ist unbarmherzig,kalt und fatal und kann nichtgestoppt werden. Die Patronen-Babies, ihren Blick hinter herme-tisch abgeschlossenen Brillen ver-borgen, haben selbst schon diesel-be, letztlich tödliche Waffe, in dersie selbst sitzen, in der Hand. Beijedem Schuss, der aus der Waffeabgegeben wird, vermehren siesich um ein Mehrfaches und trei-ben dadurch die Überbevölkerungbis ad absurdum voran!
In fact, this is the third bar HRG hasdesigned. The first, built in the Eighties inTokyo, a three level atrium with a spiraling
staircase has fallen, after its great initialsuccess, into incompetent hands and thewhole building was leveled shortly afterwards.The second, which still exists in Chur, hisnative town, is situated in the suburban andcommercial part of the city that only a fewinitiates frequent.It is only here and now that HRG can finallybring his vision to life in total freedom, withoutrestraints from promoters, in a welcominguniverse, at the same time disquieting andcomfortable, right in the building complex ofhis own museum.
Die Museums-Bar in Gruyères isteigentlich schon seine dritte. Die zwei-te, die noch immer besteht, befindet
sich in seiner Heimatstadt Chur. Leiderbefindet sie sich inmitten eines weitläufigen,modernen Einkaufszentrums, das an derPeripherie der Stadt gelegen ist. Das ersteBar-Projekt, ein dreistöckiges Atrium mitWendeltreppe, wurde in den 80er-Jahren inTokyo erbaut. Nach einem durchschlagen-den Initialerfolg fiel das Ganze leider in übleHände. Das Gebäude wurde kurz danacheinfach niedergerissen. Die neue Bar ist diebislang speziellste und wurde bis ins letzteDetail von HRG konzipiert und während derRealisation begutachtet.
En fait, ceci est le troisième bar que HRGiger aménage. Le premier, un atriumde trois étages avec escalier en
colimaçon, construit dans les années 80 àTokyo, est tombé, après un grand succèsinitial dans des mains peu recommanda-bles. Tout l’immeuble fut rasé peu après.Le second, qui existe encore à Coire, saville natale, est noyé dans un quartierexcentré, moderne et commercial et seulsquelques initiés le fréquentent.Ce n’est qu’ici et maintenant qu’il peut enfincréer en toute liberté, sans contrainte depromoteurs, un univers d’accueil à la foisinquiétant et convivial.

L’on s’aperçoit alors que HRG n’est pas seulement unartiste et un hôte hors du commun qui nous invite àpartager son domaine, mais aussi un musicienqui frappe sans retenue sur les touches. Le matériautravaillé, au cours de la journée s’est transformé,comme HRG, comme vous, comme moi. Maintenant,les touches d’ivoire parlent, HRG se tait. Oublié lepénible travail de la journée, le lent et constantprogrès du travail accompli. La musique adoucit etdonne de l’élan, même aux murs du musée.L’araignée ne se promène pas au plafond, mais fait lasieste sur la moquette. Giger est jazzy, pas de magienoire, pas de mystère, juste quelques notes de swing.
HRG likes listening to jazz and he plays jazzhimself. The piano stands in a large spaciousroom where he exhibits his private collection.
His wide-ranging musical taste includes a variety ofstyles, from Debbie Harry's "Jazz Passengers" to thesounds of the rock band KORN.The lucky ones who happen to be there at the rightmoment may witness a metamorphosis of the artistas he turns into a lively musician.Giger plays the piano in a room in which he creatednone of the artworks on display, but where otherartists’ works are invited to be seen. For the visitor,it is a welcome insight into Giger’s tastes and awonderful opportunity to share in what he likes.
HRG hört – und spielt auch gerne – Jazz. Auch imMuseum, und zwar im Dachstock, wo er seinepersönliche Sammlung Phantastischer Kunst
ausstellt, befindet sich ein Flügel. Zwar ist seinLieblingsmusiker Miles Davis, doch wenn er selbst indie Tasten greift, handelt es sich bei der – verblüffendgut gespielten – Musik zumeist um beschwingteBoogiee-Woogie-Stücke.
As we listen to the music, we realize that Giger is not only anexceptional artist and host, inviting us to share his world, butalso a rather good musician who plays the piano with totalabandon. Through subtle alchemy, the material he worked onall day has changed him, just as it has changed us.Now, the ivory keys are singing, and Giger is quiet. Forgottenare the painful work of the day and the slow and steadyprogress of accomplishing his objective. The music softensand enlivens the museum walls. Andre Lassen's bronze spiderdoesn't crawl on the ceiling anymore but is sleeping quietly onthe carpet. Giger feels jazzy, no black magic, no mystery, justa few beats of swing.
HRG écoute volontiers et joue lui-même du jazz. Le pianoest installé dans la salle du musée, au troisième étage,où il expose sa collection personnelle. Giger est aussi
fan du groupe de hard-rock Korn. Il a d’ailleurs dessiné unporte-micro de concert pour leur chanteur Jonathan Davis.Les chanceux qui auront pénétré ici pourront assister — unefois n’est pas coutume — à une nouvelle et incroyable méta-morphose. L’artiste tel qu’on le connaît laisse place à un musi-cien entraînant. HRG se trouve dans une salle où rien n’a étécréé par lui, où d’autres sont invités à être regardés.Par là même, c’est pour le visiteur, une révélation quant auxgoûts du maître des lieux ! Quel beau cadeau que celui de fairepartager ce que l’on aime !
