Off the radar screen
Days after Air Frances ill-fated Airbus A330 plunged mysteriously into thesouthern Atlantic Ocean four hours after leaving Rio de Janeiro for Paris onMay 31st , rescuers were still searching for debris.
The wreckage is thought to lie up to some 3,700 metres below the waves, possibly in one of the many trenches that riddle the rocky underseamountain range west of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Its exact location may not beknown for several weeks.
One of the hazards of flying over oceans is the lack of radar coverage. Eventhe latest radar equipment can reach out no more than 550 kilometres (300nautical miles) from land. Once out of radar range, pilots flyingintercontinental routes make scheduled radio contact every half an hour orso with air-traffic control stations, behind or ahead of them, to report theirpositions. The rest of the time, no one knows exactly where they are.
A number of countries, especially those surrounded by oceans or by vastexpanses of rugged wilderness are none too happy with this. America,Australia and Canada have been among the most active proponents ofsatellite navigation for commercial aircraft.
The Canadian authorities began operation of such a system in January. Ituses what is known in aviation circles as ADS-B, short for automaticdependent surveillance-broadcast. The technology combines the preciseposition of the aircraft, as identified by global-positioning satellites, withdata about its flight number, speed, direction and attitude (whether it isclimbing, descending or turning).

Although ADS-B would not have prevented the crash into the Atlantic Ocean,it might well have helped locate the debris more quickly. Knowing the exactlocation of the accident would allow rescue craft to be on the scene within
hours, pulling any survivors from the water. That too would be a greatbenefit of the new air-traffic-control technology.

Judge the following items about the ideas and the linguistic structuresof the text above.
11) America, Australia and Canada, which are surrounded either byoceans or rough wilderness are the most active proponents ofsatellite navigation for commercial aircraft.
12) The automatic dependent surveillance broadcast would not haveprevented the crash into the Atlantic, notwithstanding its technologywhich combines the precise position of the aircraft with data aboutits flight number, speed, direction as well as attitude.
13) The word ill-fated (R.1) is synonymous with doomed.
14) The verb to plunge in Airbus A330 plunged mysteriously intothe southern Atlantic Ocean (R.1-2) means to thrust or throw
(something or oneself) forcibly or suddenly downwards.15) The word wreckage (R.4) refers to the remaining parts ofsomething that has been wrecked.
16) The wreckage exact location is already known.

Shifting gears
That jet engines have evolved over the past few decades will be apparent toany seasoned air traveller. Early jet engines had narrow inlets and were verynoisy, but as the diameter of the fans at the front increased, the enginesbecame quieter. Compared with a rowdy 1960s jet, a modern turbofan issome 80% quieter and burns as little as half as much fuel thus producingfewer greenhouse gases.
The aviation industry has set itself a tough target: a 50% reduction in fuelconsumption by 2020, to cut CO2 emissions in half. The solution devised byPratt & Whitney (P&W), a division of United Technologies, is a gearedturbofan engine called the PurePower PW1000G.
Some airlines, however, are wary of gearboxes. They worry that replacing asimple shaft with a complex gearbox will increase maintenance costs andmake it more likely that something will go wrong.

The U.N. and the sea grab of today
It was the Maltese delegate to the United Nations (U.N.) who spoke up first,in November 1967, to urge the members of the U.N. to use their collectiveclout to come to an agreement on fair and responsible use of the worldsoceans. It took 15 years, but an agreement was eventually struck from anine-year conference that produced the U.N. Convention on the Law of theSea.
The treaty was completed in 1982 and came into force in 1994. Essentially,it codified already established customs, like the Law of the Sea. Internationalwaters remained international, the common heritage of all mankind.
Limitations were set on how much coastal water and seafloor a nation couldclaim as its own. Other legislation determined by the convention includedcreating the concept of exclusive economic zones (EEZ). Territorial watersare extensions of a states laws and right of defense; EEZs are extensions ofa states rights to resources offshore. The boundaries of an EEZ go wellbeyond territorial waters, extending 200 miles (322 km) from shore. All ofthe organic and mineral resources found in these waters are the exclusivedomain of the coastal nation it belongs to.

Sharks in the waterIn the last year, Somalias pirates have attacked 120 vessels in the Gulf ofAden, choking commerce in a critical shipping lane (the transit route for 20percent of the worlds oil), blocking aid supplies and driving up transportcosts.

REPORTAGEM TRADUZIDA
The Ascent of Money
Synopsis
Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot: Call it what you like, it matters. ToChristians, love of it is the root of all evil. To generals, its the sinews of war.To revolutionaries, its the chains of labour. But in The Ascent of Money, NiallFerguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress.Whats more, he reveals financial history as the essential back-story behindall history. The evolution of credit and debt was as important as anytechnological innovation in the rise of civilization, from ancient Babylon tothe silver mines of Bolivia. Banks provided the material basis for thesplendours of the Italian Renaissance, while the bond market was thedecisive factor in conflicts from the Seven Years War to the American CivilWar.
With the clarity and verve for which he is famed, Niall Ferguson explains whythe origins of the French Revolution lie in a stock market bubble caused by aconvicted Scots murderer. He shows how financial failure turned Argentinafrom the worlds sixth richest country into an inflation-ridden basket case and how a financial revolution is propelling the worlds most populouscountry from poverty to power in a single generation.
Yet the most important lesson of the worlds financial history is that sooneror later every bubble bursts sooner or later the bearish sellers outnumberthe bullish buyers sooner or later greed flips into fear. And thats why, whether youre scraping by or rolling in it, theres never been a better time
to understand the ascent of money.
