SENSI RETURNS TO THE AZORES Azorean atheart, Sensi returned to the Azores to share “PequenosCrimes Entre Amigos” (“Small Crimes AmongFriends”), his latest CD considered to be a hymn tohip-hop. Before going on stage at the Ateneu Criativo,the musician spoke of his relationship with the Azoresand, in particular, with the Island of S. Miguel, whichhe has visited numerous times. He has unforgettablememories of those trips: the hydrangeas bordering theroads, Furnas, the island’s smell, the Lagoa do Fogo,the Vila Franca islet and also the friendliness andhospitability so characteristic to the Azoreans.The musician admits having been very lucky to be ableto return to São Miguel and perform for the local publicsaying that “it’s wonderful to come to the Azores, it’snot easy to come here to perform”.On the SATA flight on his way back home, Sensi wasalready missing the Azores. Only those having beenhere can understand.

THE “TREASURES” OF AZOREANARCHEOLOGY The Azoreanarchipelago is a unique platform to get toknow the daily life of the society at thetime of the Portuguese Discoveries.Uninhabited when the Portuguese arrived in

the 15th century, the implementation of thehousing and industry infrastructures, aswell as the circulation of transatlanticcommercial goods produced locally, allowedfor a kind of “time capsule” wherearcheologists develop investigations in orderto reconstitute the daily life between the15th and 18th centuries. She lived in the United States of Americafor four years and seven months. First in Boston, then inNew York, A personal experience which, undoubtedly, hel-ped Luísa Sobral discover her musical identity.She remembers listening to all types of music at home fromearly childhood. He father plays drums and likes poprock. It’s, therefore, easy to understand why Luísa Sobralat first chose this genre of music. But it’s in fact whensinging jazz that she feels in her element.Her career is still short, but she has already known a lotof successes and signs that she has chosen the right path.When living in the United States, a country where shewouldn’t like to live forever, she was nominated for seve-ral prestigious awards. In Portugal, she has already recor-ded two CDs, the first one, “The Cherry On My Cake”in 2011. Besides singing, Luísa Sobral also likes to writethe lyrics. >She admits she felt this urge because shethinks that normally jazz lyrics are “too basic”.She is not bothered by comparisons to other famous jazz sin-gers such as Norah Jones or labels such as her belonging toa generation which opted for a more accessible and commer-cial jazz, if this will make her appeal to new audiences. tiu esse apelo ao achar que, normalmente, no jazz asletras eram “manifestamente básicas”.Não a incomodam comparações com outras canto-ras de referência, como Norah Jones, ou rótulos depertencer a uma geração que optou pelo jazz maisacessível ou comercial, se isso servir para conquis-tar novos públicos. Há uns anos, foi convidada para atuar pela primeiravez num festival de música em Portugal. Apesar depreferir concertos mais intimistas, aceitou o desafioe admite ter ficado surpreendida com o “resultadopositivo” e a adesão do público. Daí para cá tem can-tado em “locais verdadeiramente surpreendentes” eum pouco por todo o mundo, com maior predo-minância na Europa. Gostaria muito de poder visitar as ilhas açorianas doPico e das Flores para cantar as suas canções. Enquantonão realiza este sonho, destaca dois concertos já rea-lizados e que foram “muito marcantes”: o primeirodecorreu em Madrid (Espanha), onde teve de pro-longar o tempo do concerto por insistência do públi-co; o segundo foi em Marrocos, realizado dentro deumas muralhas, com o público a cantarolar as suasmúsicas em coro. Antes deste concerto a cantora por-tuguesa já tinha visitado quatro vezes Marrocos, paísque muito aprecia.

Since then, she hasbeen singing “in truly amazing places” and a bit all overthe world, mainly in Europe.She would very much like to visit the Azorean islands of Picoand Flores to sing her songs. Until this dream comes trueshe would like to refer to two concerts that were “very impor-tant”. The first one took place in Madrid (Spain), where shehad to extend the duration of the concert by demand of thepublic. The second one was in Morocco; it took place insi-de some walls, with the public singing along. Before this con-cert, the Portuguese singer had already visited Morocco fourtimes – she likes the country very much. In 2014, thePortuguese singer released her last musicalwork. She already has a concert in Turkey onher agenda. It’ll be her first time there.

The surprising building of the MyZeil shoppingmall stands out on Zeil Street, a project ofItalian architect Massimiliano Fuksas.A few steps away south of Römer, the Eiserneg Steg (ironbridge), is colored with locks which lock promises of eter-nal love. This pedestrian bridge was built in 1868/69, isthe perfect spot to enjoy the view of the city’s skylinereflected on River Main. Looking at the horizon line, theold and the new meet and mingle in the recovering of the‘injuries’ the city suffered during a war which destroyed70% of its buildings. The environmentally friendly buil-dings, sustainable in their use and capture of energy, arewhere the most solid companies in the world have theiroffices. The skyline reminds us of what we are used toseeing in American cities, with the difference that this onehas, here and there, German houses with half-timber.This is Frankfurt’s trademark.Using the streetcar, in a few minutes we get the center ofMainhattan. Steel, iron and glass in the most variedforms, competing in creativity and height. TheCommerzbank building stands out, it’s the highest (300meters), and that of the DZ Bank with its heated crownon the top and the Main Tower, open to the public andfrom which you can see the whole city spreading beforeyour eyes.On our goodbye to the city, flying back to the Azores, alast glance. An enormous extension of woods surroundsthe airport; it’s meant to absorb the ecological impactcaused by the intense air traffic. Nothing is left to chan-ce as we can see. Organized. Interconnected.

Sometimes, it’s the chromatic impressions thatthe best trigger and sum up the memories ofa journey. Don’t think Santa Maria, “the Sun Island”runs out of its identity coloration with yellow. It’s a fact thatthe warmer and drier weather gives it golden shades, butthe landscape on Santa Maria is rich in other shades.On this journey, as on a chromatic route, we discover anisland with two geomorphologies: an area with low plains,with greater aridity, yellowish and another with a morerugged terrain, with green ridges and reefs. From PicoAlto, the island’s highest place, we can testify this dis-tinctive panorama and also see cartography of new colors.Santa Maria’s unexpected clay pits are red and orange. Theoldest island – it was formed in the archipelago more thanten million years ago – has landscapes of rare beauty whichoriginate in its volcanic and sedimentous origin such as theBarreiro da Faneca. This “red desert” sweeps over a clay sur-face downwind sometimes more intense sometimes softer.Still in the warm color area, we proceed to relax nearPoço da Pedreira, a former stone quarry in Pico Vermelhowhich reflects intense fire red shades in a small lake.The contrasting shades are part of the island’s landscape

It was only in 1904 thatit became a café. It was reconstructed afterthe war, maintaining its original structure,and in 2002 it was remodeled andtransformed in what it is today.Red lamps on the counter make it intimateand welcoming and the walls are decoratedwith old photos of Frankfurt. But whatthe Luso-descendent Tracy Barbosa likes isthe challenge. The enthusiasm she puts in her wordscan also be seen in Tracy Barbosa’s eyes. This 36-year-old young artist’s career and identity are based on cha-llenges. Not only the challenge of re-interpreting herselfas a painter with works all over the world, but also as ahome-schooling mother and Luso-descendent connectedto her roots.Despite no longer knowing how to speak Portuguese, herAzorean roots are latent, the direct descent which startsin Nordeste and Água Retorta, the land of her parents inS. Miguel, from where many emigrants left for the USA’seast coast. She painted a goshawk based on the Azorean flag, in herown way – “it’s the abstraction of feeling Azorean” – buttoday perfectly adapted in New Bedford, she takes wingsand new horizons are open to her for her work.

TracyBarbosa wants to go back to paint “the old fee-ling” of the islands. She is attracted by the new natu-re that post-industrial landscape provides in urban environ-ments. “I like the feeling of the manufactured”. Her canva-ses are a reflection and a result of this. She paints in layers,to replicate multiple processes, she mixes photography, repe-ats graphics, imposes images. Then she softens everythingwith the chromatism and the harmony of the oriental lands-cape imaginary. The result is vibrant. She reconstructs anatural habitat, a symbiosis between decadence and a resur-gence of an intentional nonconformism: “It helps to think”.Tracy Barbosa expresses herself in big. One of her works hasalready occupied a whole canvas roll. The big scale can beexplained with her 18-year ballet training: “When I look ata canvas, I see and empty dance room which I have to achie-ve”. So she fills the canvas with large movements and rhyth-mic brushstrokes of a former ballet dancer and restless soul.This complex dynamic happens at her house-studio, avast loft part of the artistic community of The Ropeworks,set in a renovated textile mill. It is a condominium meantfor artists, designers and craftsmen. Here they live and deve-lop their vocation. Mass Creative Boston, a multidisciplinary organi-zation for the creation of artistic communities.“It sometimes frantic”, she says. But the versatility can bemainly attested on her art with glass. Tracy Barbosa builds, ashappens on her canvases, individually worked glass layers, fora unique result. Used as panels, doors, and windows or simplyas paintings, Tracy’s glasses have multiple views and interpre-tations: “Glass’s subtlety is beautiful”. Whatever the format, technique or style, Tracy says she isattracted by art’s inexhaustible capacity: “I like challenges”.Above all when she describes herself: “To paint is what I am.I’m a poet and this is my visual poetry”.

atricia Marirea Mudd, na sua obra PortugueseBermudians—An Early History and ReferenceGuide 1848-1949, refere que a 4 de novem-bro de 1849 chegaram à Bermuda, a bordodo navio The Golden Rule, os primeiros 58imigrantes portugueses, provenientes daMadeira, os quais foram logo seguidos pelos

açorianos que, desde então, têm emigrado para esse destino.A 16 de dezembro do mesmo ano, o jornal local da Bermuda,Royal Gazette, aludia à chegada desses primeiros portugueses, refe-rindo que “esperamos que contribuam para introduzir o cultivoda vinha de uma forma mais proeminente do que a actual.” Reconhecidos como trabalhadores empenhados e com um gran-de conhecimento sobre a produção agrícola em pequenas ilhas,as gentes dos Açores afirmaram, ao longo dos anos, a sua presençae o seu contributo fundamental para o desenvolvimento econó-mico da Bermuda. Um anúncio, publicado em janeiro de 1865,exemplifica bem a crescente consideração pelos trabalhadoresaçorianos, relatando os esforços do Governo Bermudiano naadoção de políticas dirigidas especificamente ao seu recrutamen-to: “Estamos muito satisfeitos por saber que o Departamento deImigração iniciou negociações com Benjamin W. THE AZOREAN SOUL IN BERMUDAAzorean people have been in Bermuda for over a cen-tury and have fully integrated into this British over-seas and autonomous territory. In fact, Azoreans haveactively contributed to the construction and develop-ment of this prosperous community. Patricia Marirea Mudd,in Portuguese Bermudians—An Early History and Reference Guide1848-1949, refers that on November 4th 1849, aboard the ship TheGolden Rule, the first 58 Portuguese immigrants arrived in Bermuda,coming from Madeira. Azoreans immediately followed and have beenimmigrating to Bermuda ever since.On December 16th of that same year, the local newspaper, RoyalGazette, mentioned the arrival of the Portuguese by stating “we hopethey will be the means of inducing the cultivation of the vine more exten-sively than at present”.Recognized as hard working people with a deep knowledge of agricul-tural production in small islands, the Azoreans soon made their pre-sence felt, and their contribution to the economic development ofBermuda has been essential over the years. An announcement madein January 1865, reporting the efforts of the Bermudian governmentto adopt policies specifically directed to recruit Azorean workers, exem-plifies the increasing esteem of Bermudians toward them: “We aremuch pleased to learn that the board of immigration has entered intoarrangements with Benjamin W. Watlington for the propose of brin-ging to Bermuda from the Western Islands (…), a certain number ofimmigrants”.Therefore, to celebrate 165 years of Portuguese presence in Bermuda,the Government of the Azores pays tribute to all the Azoreans who,throughout decades, emigrated to that Atlantic archipelago.In fact, according to official data, from 1960 to 2000 over 6 thousandpeople emigrated from the Azores to Bermuda. Although in the pastfew years many emigrants actually returned, it is common to say that25% of the population of Bermuda is Azorean or Azorean-descendant. The Vasco da Gama Club,based in Hamilton, is the only Portuguese institution in Bermuda andhas been crucial for the dissemination of this valuable linguistic, cul-tural and religious heritage.The Government of the Azores acknowledges the important work carriedout by this association in favor of the Azorean culture and the Portugueselanguage by supporting several of its initiatives, as well as some acti-vities undertaken by its dependent structures, namely Escola OficialPortuguesa.In reality, and considering the large number of Portuguese, most of themAzoreans, permanently or temporarily residing in Bermuda, thePortuguese language became the second language in the archipelago,right after English. In addition, the greatest Azorean cultural and reli-gious expressions, such as the Feast of the Holy Ghost, are still verymuch alive in Bermuda, as in many other places in the world, as animpressive mark of our emigration.Also, Azorean folklore dances and music instruments, as the so-calledviola da terra, are today essential elements of many festivities, as thePortugal Day Parade Harbour Nights, the Bermuda AgriculturalExhibition or the Bermuda Day Parade, as well as of private and familycelebrations.These cultural expressions, which are part of the daily life of Azoreanswherever they are, have been recognized and cherished by the Bermudiangovernmental entities. This posture, in addition to value the Azoreancommunity, acknowledges its contribution to the economic and socialdevelopment, as well as to the cultural enrichment of Bermuda.

Também o Folclore e as tocatas de cordofones tipicamente açoria-nos, como a denominada viola da terra, são hoje elementos indis-pensáveis em diversas festas como o Portugal Day Parade HarbourNights, a Bermuda Agricultural Exhibition ou o Bermuda Day Parade,do mesmo modo como em celebrações privadas e familiares. Todas estas expressões culturais, integrando o quotidiano dos aço-rianos onde quer que se encontrem, são reconhecidas e acarin-hadas pelas entidades Governamentais Bermudianas. Tal facto, paraalém de valorizar a comunidade açoriana, constitui também umaforma de reconhecer o seu contributo para o desenvolvimento eco-nómico e social e o enriquecimento cultural da Bermuda.

SANTA MARIA: THE ISLANDAND THE AIRPORT Between the endof the Second World War and the mid 1970s,the airport on Santa Maria was the maingateway and exit for international civil avia-tion in the Azorean archipelago. CharlesLindbergh, the pilot who made the first transatlanticflight in 1927, early on realized the importance of theAzores as a stopover for future transatlantic flights thathe himself helped define and map in his study and recon-naissance flights made during the 1930s while at the ser-vice of Pan American Airways. In 1933, he visited theAzores where he alighted his seaplane Lockheed Sirius inFaial and in S. Miguel, having concluded that the ruggedorography of the islands’ volcanic soil was not good forbuilding airports, the only alternative being to alight the

Maria numa espécie de “Little America” nos Açores,para onde convergiram milhares de pessoas envolvi-das na construção e funcionamento da vasta infra-estrutura aeroportuária aí criada, a qual compreen-dia, além do centro de controlo de tráfego aéreo,uma pequena cidade dotada de residências, hotel,cinema, piscina, campos de jogos, posto emissor derádio e outras amenidades características do “séculoamericano” a que a maioria dos açorianos não esta-va ainda habituada. Para melhor se avaliar o cosmopolitismo experimen-tado pela ilha de Santa Maria ao longo de três déca-das (1950-1970), o período áureo das escalas tran-satlânticas no aeroporto, é preciso ter em conta queo mundo da aviação, desde os pilotos e pessoal debordo até às próprias aeronaves, eram então os sím-bolos mais tangíveis da vida moderna no pós-guerrae, numa altura em que o mundo ainda não estava àdistância de um clique no computador, tudo quan-to era novidade chegava de avião, fosse ele um apa-relho a hélice vindo de Boston ou Nova Iorque, ouum jacto supersónico (como o mítico Concorde) che-gado de Paris. Num documentário recentemente rea-lizado por Eberhard Scherdl (“Santa MariaConnection”), que capta muito bem o ambiente sin-gular que o aeroporto trouxe a uma ilha até entãoadormecida, há um depoimento do sociólogo e radia-lista António Melo Sousa que resume de forma exem-plar essa atmosfera vivida em Santa Maria na déca-da de 1960, quando a estação “Asas do Atlântico” mar-cava o compasso da modernidade nas ilhas dosAçores: “Em São Miguel ainda andavam a trautear osBeatles e nós aqui já ouvíamos o Jimi Hendrix”.

Thousands ofpeople arrived involved in the construction and operationof the large airport infrastructure which was created therewhich included, besides the air traffic control center, asmall city with houses, a hotel, cinema, swimming pool,a sports field, a radio transmitter station, and other ame-nities characteristic of the “American century” to whichthe majority of Azoreans was not accustomed to.To better understand the cosmopolitism experienced bySanta Maria Island throughout three decades (1950-1970), the golden age of transatlantic stopovers at the air-port, we must take into account the world of aviation, frompilots to crew to the aircrafts themselves, they were thenthe more tangible symbol of post-war modern life and, ata time the world was not yet at a distance of a compu-ter click, anything which was a novelty arrived by plane,be it a propeller driven plane or a supersonic jet( like themythical Concorde) arriving from Paris. In a recent docu-mentary by Eberhard Scherdl (“Santa Maria Connection”),which very well captures the unique atmosphere that theairport brought to the I up to then dormant island, thereis an account by sociologist and broadcaster António MeloSousa which fantastically summarizes the atmosphereexperienced On Santa Maria in the 60s, when the radiostation “Asas do Atlântico” marked the modernity in theAzorean islands: “In São Miguel they were still singingthe Beatles whereas we over here were already listeningJimi Hendrix”.

THE AZORESIn any of the Azorean islands it is possible to feel theweight of the World – not the one in terms of kilograms,but that which derives from History and goes back to theprimordial act of the Genesis. In no other place is natu-re so harmonious, despite the obvious differences betwe-en its elements, in what concerns strength, solidity andliquidity, visibility and aroma. Fire and lava mingle withthe serenity of the sun and of the rains, with the danceof the winds and the waves. An inhabitant goes to bedrealizing that weight of the World; a visitor is amazedthat the elements of Nature are in their right places – theharmony that sketches the islands is therefore explainedas well as the uniqueness of each one of them. They donot repeat themselves. Wandering around accomplishesfates and purposes. The islanders know about this andthey comply with it. They comply with love the affectionroute, observing the landscapes amongst the mists andfogs, knowing that, after every sunny corner, light will nolonger reflect the floor mirror. There are constant engage-ments between uncertain weather conditions and morningsof unspeakable lucidity.In the Azores, imposing heritage stands out (palaces,manor houses, churches, convents) and other that almostask for forgiveness because they are so insignificant but

É possível conviver com as artes antigas e ascontemporâneas, sejam elas volumes arquitetónicos,artes plásticas, música e esse devaneio, tão necessá-rio ao corpo e ao espírito, dos sabores ditados por cru-zamentos históricos de especiarias das índias e peloapuramento da paciente doçaria conventual. E nin-guém pode abstrair-se da socialização dos açorianos,a qual se impõe por um sentido da tolerância e poroutro da hospitalidade. É permanente saber que nadase possui porque é sempre necessário partilhar, soba interpretação da festa imperial promovida porirmandades e sacralizada na Terceira Pessoa daTrindade – o Espírito Santo. São perturbantes os rituaisdesta festa, que desaguam inocentemente no camposubtil do sagrado e do profano. Só o povo açorianoconhece as fronteiras. Não duvida da sua fé. Ainda não se disse nada sobre o mar, esse caminhorumável que leva a todos os destinos. Não se conse-gue viver numa ilha sem a certeza do mar. Quandoo ilhéu acorda o seu olhar é lá que se segura. É comose ele fosse um bordão de água. Depois, a solidãonão resiste ao seu próprio sentimento. Ela sabe quepode caminhar, sair dali e desaparecer como fantas-ma indesejável. A música é das garças. Tudo o maissão transparências. A perdição não é possível. O pesodo Mundo não se compadece com o entendimentodo que, afinal, se sustenta da poesia e se cobre como manto diáfano do silêncio.
