other hand, has a great level of superior athletes and chooses to help them train for team work and camaraderie and lack/loss of ego so that they perform at a superior level. This is the key to our country’s, and our Jewish Community’s, greatness. We have superior people. But we also un-derstand that being the greatest individual does not always bestow on your nation, or your community, the great-est achievement. Superior, gifted people who can strive to contribute without needing individual accomplishment will ultimately bring greater success for all. Each person’s unique “flavor” contributes to a cornucopia of aromas that will always be fulfilling to the senses and sensitivities of community. As I look back to the London games, a few memories remain fresh in my mind. . . Bob Costas, NBC Commentator and Anchor, pausing in his introduction of the Israeli team to express his individual moment of silence in memory of the Munich 11, and Aly Reisman, being joined by the spectators’/participants’ of the Floor Exercise, final clapping to Hava Nagila, and the NBC commentator say-ing, “She went to her culture to choose this song.” Mr. Costas, saw the loss of life of those athletes as a loss to the Olympic spirit, and hence his personal loss. Those watching the Floor Exercise saw Ally’s choice as their choice. In both cases, our culture became their culture. As we enter this new year of 5773, may we remember what we need to make ourselves strong; team work and the willingness to synergize with others! This new synergy will truly fulfill the covenant of America for us, for our congregation and for our community and then this “Goldeneh Medina” will continue to be golden for us. B’ahava v’Shana Tova, Rabbi Mark

When you don’t agree with someone, do you approach the issue in a positive way? I know when you have a disagreement, it may seem like a bad experience, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a growing experience. The bottom line, if a person becomes confrontational, no matter how good you think your argument is, it will cause more harm than good, to allow the encounter to lapse into hostility or resentment. Disagreements are such a small thing in the larger scheme of life. If you don’t have your faith, health, family, and friends, what do you really have? Focus on what really matters. On that note, the High Holidays are fast approaching. I want to wish each and every one of you the best for the Jewish New Year. If I have upset you or wronged you in any way, I want to say I am sorry. Several weeks ago, Temple Beth Emet shared Shabbat services with Burbank Temple Emanu El. There were over 120 temple members in attendance. People loved the experience. As some of you may have heard, my interpretation of the event was that it had synergy. That means, when two or more things func-tion together, produce a result not independently obtainable, the result of this is synergy. What was the rea-son we did this? There is no secret. There was, and still is nothing to report. The purpose was to get to know our Jewish neighbors. But, if something comes out of this sharing of our collective Shabbat Services, it will be positive for all parties involved. There are congregants who are concerned that there might be unifi-cation. First of all, we are only getting to know each other at this time. Speculation only causes needless worry. If we do agree to anything it would not be a takeover on either side. Both temples have something wonderful to offer. If anything happens, it would be a marriage, of sorts. One thing to keep in mind, if it comes to something we can agree to, this will be a slow process. We are not rushing into anything. TBE has roughly 160 families. Our neighbors up the hill have half that. Of course, we want more members. We need more funds and volunteers. We are not, I repeat not, on the verge of collapse! There are a lot of issues that need to be worked out before anything would happen with our neighbors. I assure you, whatever happens; we will not lose our identity as in Independent Reform Congregation. On the other hand, BTEE will not lose their identity either. There have been several congregations that have merged that are from the Re-form and Conservative movements. Nothing can be done by the board. It must be approved by our mem-bers. I cannot emphasize enough, nothing is happening at this juncture. We are going to have a joint Tashlich service at Johnny Carson Park on September 23rd at 4pm. Someone sent me a little something about Tashlich. I thought you might appreciate reading it: Tashlich originated during the Middle Ages and was inspired by a verse uttered by the prophet Micah: G-d will take us back in love; G-d will cover up our iniquities, You, G-d, will hurl all our sins Into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19) As the custom evolved it became tradition to go to a river and symbolically cast your sins onto the water on the first day of Rosh HaShanah.* Any concerns you may have, positive or negative, please email me at: [email protected] I want to wish everyone a sweet New Year. -President Steve Abrams From About.com Judaism ~ a Division of The New York Times
