To the teachers
In this material we intend to work with translation issues. In order that, some
exercises related to Translation Modalities were organized trying to shed lights on
students’ difficulties to deal with the rendering process.
The activities might be used to students attending classes in high school at
the stage of Second Grade in Public Schools of Paraná.
According to Barbosa (2004) “We all have an idea of what translation is or
how it should be”... although this wise quotation a source text write in English, for
example, can be seen as an incomprehensible text to the ones who are engaged
into the understanding process of such text due to translation difficulties they have
to face.
From this perspective, the necessity to build a pedagogical material where
some translation training could be put into consideration, trying to develop
rendering abilities was our focus of attention. This can be done to teach English as
a second language taking advantages of a selection of texts by means of Corpus
Linguistics methodology.
Actually, Corpus Linguistics will be used as an electronic tool by means of
COMPARA, which is a parallel corpus written in English and Portuguese. In fact, it
is kind of data base with original texts. It could be used as a wide resource to
research translation solutions an so on. We hope that the teachers and students
take advantages from kind of methodology. At least …..
To the students;
In this pedagogical material we are going to work with texts, phrases and
songs to understand translation facilities. So, we are going to study some ways to
understand the translation process. Firstly, we need to understand that there are
kinds of modalities used for the best translators to face translation difficulties.
This material will give you some ideas to solve activities and build your
knowledge exploring the translation modalities. We will explore texts in what some
words do not have translation in the context, but we will try to teach you how you
can work with them.
You know that in our global world we use English in our daily routine and
many times we are not aware that this language makes part of our lives. Some
examples are technical words that are used worldwide especially in the new
technological areas.
So, of course we need to learn about translation strategies, as well as, we
need to value translator as a job. A good translator can earn money and status with
his or her work, as well as, to understand our modern world better. So how good at
translation are you?
In this task we are going to have a Translation Experiment. Follow these
instructions:
Be quiet!
Look at the pictures!
You have some minutes to write something about them.
You cannot talk or share information with your classmates.
At this moment your teacher can not help you!

Now let´s go on in a discussion. But first read part of a text written in Portuguese.
Highlight words in English that you do not know the meaning. - Text 1

Now ask your teacher to write on the blackboard what you write on your material. As you
can see each one have a different idea to translate the pictures. So, this experiment was
about fidelity. If fidelity is difficult to discuss can you imagine how difficult is to translate a
text being faithful to the original text. Everybody who translates a text will have his or her
point of view or even though different ideas or conceptions to translate.
The answers written on the blackboard can have information gains or information
losses. This happens because the same picture corresponds to different translations. Your
translation is Ok if you keep the same message.
Remember that the first principle about translation is that you need to keep the frame
information. Frame also means structure, so you need to keep it.
According to Gille D (1995), who is a translator related to translation “The minimum
fidelity principle is that a kernel should cover the message. It is because the message that

Devido ao sucesso do Twitter, um grande número de sites parecidos foram lançados ao
redor do mundo.

Try to circle all the English words in the text. - Text 2
After reading the text, can you number how many English words do you find?
Why there are so many English words in a text written in Portuguese?
Do you agree to use English words in the Portuguese language? Why?
Do you think we have to translate all words into Portuguese?
How could you translate the words you find in this text?
Make a list of English words that are used in the Portuguese language.
Aprenda a criar seu perfil no Twitter Você sabe o significado de twitter? Twitter é o nome de um

Twitter, mas não sabe como entrar lá. Ou quando você tentou entrar, deu errado? Siga esse passo-a-
passo.- Entre no Twitter.com. Clique em 'Sign Up Now', o botão verde.

Let´s think!
It is important to check the word meanings
because many times you can make mistakes
related to word meanings. Especially if these
words are called false friends. Let´s see some
examples!!!!
How many English words do use every day? Is it necessary to translate every word to know its meaning? What kind of material do you use when you need to translate something? We finished the first part of this material. And we hope you have many doubts to go on to the second part of this material.
Now it is your turn. Make a research about “false friends” or “false cognates”. You
can also research about what is a cognate word. Because, we use them a lot in our
language. By doing this research you can learn lots of words in English in an easy
way.
This text is talking, shortly, about Saint Jerome´s life.
So it is our Reading time: Born at Stridon, a town on the confines of
Dalmatia and Pannonia, about the year 340-2;
died at Bethlehem 30 September, 420. He went
to Rome, probably about 360, where he was
baptized and became interested in ecclesiastical
matters. From Rome he went to Trier, famous
for its schools, and there began his theological
studies. Later he went to Aquileia (…), after to
Antioch. From 374-9 Jerome led an ascetical
life in the desert of Chalcis. Ordained priest, he
went to Constantinople (380-81)…From 382 to
August 385 he made another sojourned in
Rome, not far from Pope Damasus.
The literary activity of St. Jerome, may be:
works on the Bible; theological controversies;
historical works; various letters; the translation
of the homilies of Origen on Jeremiahs,
Ezcechiel, and Isaias (379-81), and about the
same time the translation of the Chonile of
Eusebius; then the "Vita S. Pauli, prima
eremites" (374-379). He translated the Old
Testament from the Hebrew (382-390).When
the pope died (11 December, 384) Jerome´s
position became a very difficult one.
His harsh criticisms had made him bitter
enemies, who tried to ruin him. After a few
months he was compelled to leave Rome…he
reached, in 386. He settled there in a monastery
near a convent founded by two Roman ladies,
who followed him to Palestine.
While Reading the text focus on
these questions: a) When and where was he born?
b) Who was the Pope at this time?
c) What criticism made to him?
d) Acording to the text what did he
translate?

First: this text is written in the past tense, as you
know. So it is important for the translation process to
identify the verb tenses in the text. It is because we
have different grammar rules for different languages.
In this case you need to identify them and put them
into your language. Make a review on the text with
your teacher´s help.
Second : there are many Latin words that are familiar
for some languages.
Third: Sometimes there are pictures in the texts that
helps us to understand the context. This process is
called intersemiotic translation.
Fourth: you do not need translate word by word you
can change it a little bit if you keep the message. This
strategy is called MODULATION. Remember the

Let’s talk about some Translation Modalities, because now we are going to work with
some strategies to translate texts in English. You need to understand better some
facilities to learn English using some modalities.
Text 1
Graças ao trabalho de bons tradutores você
já deve conhecer a o texto enciclopédico
posto ao lado. Vamos portanto tentar fazer
uma tradução literal. Use o seu caderno e
um bom dicionário. Usando esta
modalidade de tradução você devera
traduzir palavra por palabra do texto.
Exemplo:
Souce text: Harry Potter is a series of
seven fantasy novels
Target text: Harry Potter é uma serie
de sete fantasias romances… Observação: Nem sempre o texto fica
bem organizado em Português quando
usamos esta modalidade. Qualquer dúvida
não esqueça de chamar São Jeronimo!
Lembre-se das dicas de tradução e de tudo
o que foi trabalhado até o momento.
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy
novels written by the British author J. K.
Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures
of the adolescent wizard Harry Potter and his
friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger,
all of whom are students at Hogwarts School
of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story
arc concerns Harry's quandary involving the
evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed
Harry's parents in his quest to conquer the
wizarding world and subjugate non-magical
people (Muggles).

provavelmente você precisará adaptá-

Modalidades de Traduçao.
Text 2
Este é outro texto enciclopédico que você
também já deve conhecer devido ao
trabalho de tradutores. Neste texto não é
possível fazer uma Tradução Literal no
texto todo. Portanto, você deverá usar
outras modalidades de tradução para
traduzi-lo. Sugerimos o uso da modalidade
de transposição onde devido a inadequação
gramatical da lingua fonte (Inglês) para a
lingua alvo (Português) são necessnárias
certas reorganizaçoes textuais.
Exemplos para : A young-adult vampire romance
(lingua fonte -Inglês)
a) Source text -Tradução literal: Um juvenil vampiresco romance
(lingua alvoPortuguês)
b) Target text -Tradução com
transposição:
um romance juvenil vampiresco
(lingua alvoPortuguês)
Como você pode perceber nos exemplos
acima em inglês (lingua fonte) devido a
regras gramaticais os adjetivos devem vir
antes do substantivo, no português (lingua
alvo) nem sempre isto acontece. Portanto
você deve transpor as palavras de lugar
devido a regras gramaticais.
Outra modalidade de tradução que você
pode usar neste texto é a o a transcrição.
Considerada o grau zero de tradução, onde
você apenas transcreve de uma língua para a
outra.
Exemplos : 14 (lingua fonte -Inglês)
a) Tradução com transcrição: 14 (lingua alvoPortuguês)
Agora Trancreva estes símbolos:

Twilight is a
young-adult vampire romance novel by
author Stephenie Meyer. Twilight was
initially rejected by 14 agents, but became
an instant bestseller when published
originally in hardback in 2005, debuting at
#5 on the New York Times Best Seller list
within a month of its release and later
peaking at #1. That same year, Twilight was
named one of Publishers Weekly´s Best
Children's Books of 2005. The novel was
also the biggest selling book of 2008 and, to
date, has sold 17 million copies worldwide,
spent over 91 weeks on the New York Times
Best Seller list, and been translated into 37
different languages. Disponível em:

Agora vamos
praticar!! Passe o texto acima da lingua fonte
para a lingua alvo. Use seu caderno, seus
conhecimentos, e também um bom dicionário
quando muito necesario. Não esqueça que você
pode usar diferentes modalidades para traduzí-
lo como: tradução literal, modulação,
transposição e transcrição. Use também o seu
bom senso para “reescrever” um bom texto
traduzido para o português!

Antes de ler o texto verifique com seu professor o significado destas palavras:
Transcript,Interprets,Written,Meaning,Record,Lectoring,Saying,said,praised,hear,
watches, sentence, rather than, who, spoken, due to, based, arrival, choice, censorship.
Você provavelmente já assistiu filmes do texto 1 e 2. Mas você pensou que
podemos ter problemas relacionados à tradução de “subtitlings”(legendas)?
Vamos descobrir numa leitura rápida que problemas poderiam ser estes?
Subtitles can be used to translate dialog from a foreign language to the native language of
the audience. It is the quickest and the cheapest method of translating content, and is
usually praised for the possibility to hear the original dialog and voices of the actors.
Translation of subtitling is sometimes very different from the translation of written text.
Usually, when a film or a TV program is subtitled, the subtitler watches the picture and
listens to the audio sentence by sentence. The subtitler may or may not have access to a
written transcript of the dialog. Especially in commercial subtitles, the subtitler often
interprets what is meant, rather than translating how it is said, i.e. meaning being more
important than form. The audience does not always appreciate this, and it can be
frustrating to those who know some of the spoken language, due to the fact that spoken
language may contain verbal padding or culturally implied meanings, in confusing words,
if not adapted in the written subtitles. The subtitler does this when the dialog must be
condensed in order to achieve an acceptable reading speed. i.e. purpose being more
important than form... when translating to English, the subtitler may reformulate the
sentence, add appropriate words and/or use notes... The two alternative methods of
'translating' films in a foreign language are dubbing, in which other actors record over the
voices of the original actors in a different language, and lectoring, a form of voice-over for
fiction material where a narrator tells the audience what the actors are saying while their
voices can be heard in the background. Lectoring is common for television in Russia,
Poland, and a few other East European countries, while cinemas in these countries
commonly show films dubbed or subtitled. The preference for dubbing or subtitling in
various countries is largely based on decisions taken in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
With the arrival of sound film, the film importers in Germany, Italy, France and Spain
decided to dub the foreign voices, while the rest of Europe elected to display the dialog as
translated subtitles. The choice was largely due to financial reasons (subtitling is
inexpensive and quick, while dubbing is very expensive and thus requires a very large
audience to justify the cost)., but during the 1930s it also became a political preference in
Germay, Italy and Spain; an expedient form of censorship that ensured that foreign views
and ideas could be stopped from reaching the local audience, as dubbing makes it possible
to create a dialogue which is totally different from the
original.Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtitles#Subtitles_as_a_source_of_humor

( ) A palavra dubbing no texto significa dublar.
abaixo.

Far far away, no choices passing, no time confounding, and you're still there. In the full moon's light i listen to the stream, And in between the sounds i still hear you calling me, But i don't know where i am, And i don't trust who I've been, And If i come home how will i ever leave?

Lua Cheia

a) Did you have any knowledge about translator as an occupation?
b) Visit the site of SINTRA (sindicato dos tradutores) . Before
knowing Sintra, how much would you pay if you need to have
something translated?
c) And after knowing about the cost of it, what would do to have
your translation?
Nesta unidade vamos trabalhar com “Machine translator”, ou seja, tradutor eletrônico.
Você já conhece alguma ferramenta eletrônica de tradução?As que você usou deram certo?
Como ficou a tradução? Vamos conhecer mais sobre este assunto. Creio que você
facilmente as informações abaixo, pois é possível fazer uma tradução literal do texto devido
a várias palavras cognatas no texto.
A machine translation (MT) is produced by a
computer program that analyzes the source text and
produces a translation (target-language text) without
human participation; nonetheless, translation
machines require human editorial assistance, in MT
jargon, pre-editing (copy editing) and post-editing
(proof-reading) of the manuscript. The usual
exception is an alphanumeric text composed of
technical terms and adjectives effected with a
dictionary-based machine translation system.
Match the English words to Portuguese:
( 1 )Machine translation ( )disurso
( 2 ) Software ( )lingua alvo
( 3 ) speech ( )manunscito
( 4 ) inaccuracy ( )tradutor
( 5 ) target language ( ) incorreto
( 6 ) manuscript ( ) Programas
Web-based human translation is generally favored
by companies and individuals that seek more
accurate translators. In view of the frequent
inaccuracy of machine translators, human translation
remains the most reliable, most accurate form of
translation available. With the recent emergence of
translation crowdsoursing translation-memory
techniques, and internet applications, translation
companies and agencies have been able to provide
on-demand human-translation services to SMBs.
Machine translation, sometimes referred to by the
abbreviation MT, is a sub-field of computational
linguistics that investigates the use of computer software
to translate text or speech from one natural language to
another. At its basic level, MT performs simple
substitutuion of words in one natural language for words
in another. Using corpus corpus techniques, more complex
translations may be attempted, allowing for better handling
of differences in Linguistic typology, phrase recognition,
and translation of idioms, as well as the isolation of
anomalies. Source:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_translation accessed in:27/08/2010
Faça uma leitura dos textos e veja quantas palavras
consegue entender. Faça uma lista daquelas que
considera mais difíceis de entender e procure no
dicionário os significados. A partir disso você
consegue ter uma idéia do texto? Então agora faça a
tradução dos textos. (Sugestão, o professor poderá
fazer grupos para cada texto). Discuta com seus
colegas quais foram as Modalidades de tradução
usadas.
Agora vamos conhecer algumas ferramentas eletrônicas como: dicionários online, e também,o
COMPARA e o O COMET que são sites usados por tradutores. Como você deve ter
reparado muitos termos africanos surgiram durante a copa de 2010.Em 2014 a copa será no
Brasil inclusive no Paraná e especialmente em Curitiba.Então teremos que mostrar nossa
cultura, hábitos e costumes a vários países do mundo.
2014 FIFA World Cup Logo
The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international football tournament that is expected to take place between June and July 2014 in Brazil.
This will be the second time the country has hosted the competition, the first being the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Brazil will become the fifth country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup twice, after Mexico, Italy, France and Germany. It will be the first World Cup to be held in South America since the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina, and the first time two consecutive World Cups are staged outside Europe (the 2010 FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa).
When we see this image our Heart beat stronger,
it’s a pleasure have the next World cup in our
state isn’t it?
Certainly from now on until the WORLD CUP people in Brazil will study more English, because people are worried about the common language. And you? What do you think about? Have you already think about it? Do you think it will be possible to go to a stadium to see any game? Do you think you will need to know more English because of it? Someday did think about the possibility to get any job during the world cup in Brazil? As you know Brazil need to adequate our country to receive a big population of foreigners, and the possibilities to have temporary jobs are bigger, but English will be necessary, certainly.
We have a text above talking about the WROLD CUP in Brazil let’s translate it using the
translation Modalities that you have learned in the unit 1 and 2.
After making the translation text think about these questions: 1_ Make a list of the words are not possible to be translate. 2- Was it difficult to understand the text? 3- When you have texts like this one do you an idea of how knowledge you have of English? 4. What Brazilian words would be more common in the 2014 World Cup. Make a list.Which do you think could be difficult to translate?
Que tal traduzirmos um trecho da música Bicho do Paraná para nos prepararmos para a
copa de 2014. Para ser mais prático você pode consultar um “Machine translator”.
Visite o site www.liguateca.pt/COMPARA/index.php para verificar como ele funciona.
Música Tema: Bicho do Paraná
Composição: João Lopes
Seu motorista toque o carro
Me tire desse lugar
Me leve logo motorista
Pro outro lado de lá
Não vou cortar o meu cabelo, não
Só pra dar o que falar
Eu não sou gato de Ipanema
Sou bicho do Paraná
A vida pra mim na cidade grande
Tá difícil pra danar
A gente que nasceu no mato
No mato tem que morar
No mato a gente se ajeita
Tudo o que se planta dá
Quero voltar pra minha terra
Pro norte do Paraná

È possível traduzir todas as palavras?
Quais palavras você não conseguiu
traduzir?
Você conseguiu fazer a tradução de
algumas palavras usando as
a) Was it dificult to use the site to translate?
b) Classify your search from the easier to the harder one.
c) Who do you think can use it?
d) From now on, when you need to translate something, are you going to make use of it?
What about to use a short text about GRALHA AZUL.
Na copa de 2010 Jakumi foi o mascote
escolhido. Em 2014 teremos que escolher a nossa
mascote. Então vamos treinar. Tente fazer a
tradução deste pequeno trecho de texto, mas
lembre-se que você encontrará desafios para
traduzir algumas palavras.

Do you know the bird Gralha Azul? Is it common to see it in Paraná? Where can you see it? Do you think foreigners know the bird “Gralha Azul”? Is it possible to translate the name Gralha Azul? Think about popular things of Paraná or Brazil that we need to explain in the 2014 World CUP. Remember you need to make some adaptations. How would you translate these words: Pinheiro ______________________ Pinhão ________________________ Quentão _______________________ Gralha Azul ____________________ Feijoada _______________________ Samba _________________________ Batuque _______________________ Cavalgada ______________________ Rodeio_________________________ As you can see we have many words that are not possible to translate into English. But it is not only in Portuguese, there are many mistakes made by common people because the culture is different.
Visit the site http://www.engrish.com and you will see many mistakes.
Let’s think about specific football vocabulary. How would you say these words in English?
