dia a dia.
mundo fora!
Writing the opening words for this Publication of the Rob-
inson Foundation is to climb the city, enter its gates and lei-
surely explore the Robinson Factory, retracing steps taken so
very many times.
It is a way of telling about the Factory, from the point of
view of someone who knows it from within, who has felt it,
lived it and recorded its day-to-day life.
It is to discover or rediscover a gaze made up of colours
showing a living space which holds the soul of Portalegre
within it.
Here is a gaze etched in brush-strokes and drawings which
guide us from the Factory gates and show us spaces filled with
light and shadow, people and movement, at a time when the
furnaces were fired to feed the needs of production.
This is a fitting tribute to the dream dreamt by George W.
Robinson and to all of those who worked to make of Portalegre
a reference in cork production the world over!

O gesto intuitivo e espontâneo. O olhar que vai muito
além do que nos é permitido ver. O traço do movimento
A fantasia a desenhar as emoções.
Intimidade, beleza, fragilidade, sofrimento, alegria… e
fazendo parte. Em “Thank you for the roses” as paredes
velhas e gastas ganharam vida; em “tribute to Robin-
The intuitive, spontaneous gesture. The gaze cast well
beyond what we are allowed to see. The instinctive etching
of movement. And, inexplicably, colour bestowing meaning
on the ceaseless search within our most secret reality. And in
a harmonious brush-stroke, the natural equilibrium which
gives continuity to attitude.
The mystery, which we do not feel but of whose exist-
ence we are aware. Fantasy drawing emotions. The relation
which allows us to be and do, and the risk inherent in decid-
ing what we do.
And this tangle of small realities come out to play, in a
kind of extraordinary, seemingly impercetible game, which
rises up to show who we really are and how much we want
to be (and feel).
Intimacy, beauty, frailty, pain, joy …. and the sharing
which lies in this encounter. The encounter with ourselves
and with others. And the courage of the encounter, with those
whose names we will never know, but with whom we want to
talk about us!
It was in this context that the emblematic smoke stacks of
Portalegre, right there in the ‘cork factory’, expressly wished
to welcome new gazes charged with colour-filled movement,
as Barbara wanted.
And she smiles! She smiles, observing what we feel is
never fully accomplished.
Barbara was at the Robinson Factory. Leaving there inti-
macy, disquiet, equilibrium, the pleasure of constant search-
ing, the moments in lives with a history. And, as a result, leav-
ing the strong trace of memory.
From the ‘Sala dos Arcos’ to the ‘Conduta’ and in so many
other nooks, there were Barbara’s paintings as a part of them.
In Thank you for the Roses, the old, worn walls gained new life; in
Tribute to Robinson, it is cork which very properly embodies and

ted to you” com o gesto da oferta e da disponibilidade;
sidão, o infinito, a grandiosidade do mundo…e “a Fabrica”,
receives the joy and meaning of colour; in Fotografia, human life
which allows existence and people; Dedicated to You gesturing
a gift and openness to others; Psychosis and the pain which
undulates in the flues, the water and the fabrics and the human
faces which cry out soundlessly and the feeling of what we do
not want for ourselves but which is the reality of some; ‘vlo’ and
other real lives, the significance which does not stay in the same
place, Under the Water gives us the immensity, the infinite and
grandiose nature of the world – and The Factory, what can we
say about the ‘factory’ which Barbara’s watercolours have not
already said?!
She knows down to the last detail every nook and cranny
of the immenseness of this structure, and the difference of her
gaze enables the colour of emotion, the drawing of pain, the
sketching of the search and of discovery, and has shown the
enchantment of a place laced with history. She has given it life,
the life this magnificent place deserves.
The time she has spent in the Robinson Factory has
brought into being a different visibility. In the ‘emblematic
smoke stacks’ of Portalegre and in us, memory and enchant-
ment remain from what we saw and felt.
The Robinson Factory and Barbara Walraven have always
known each other!

sagem ainda lava a vista. Vive e trabalha no Alentejo, junto a
tura.
plena vigor.
Algumas outras exposições: Fort Altena, Holanda; Fort
Vuren, Holanda; Mosteiro de São Martinho, Mire de Tibães,
Braga; Museu da Tapeçaria de Portalegre – Guy Fino, Museu
de Água, Patriarcal, Lisboa; Fábrica Robinson, Portalegre;
Termas de Fadagosa, Beirã; Galeria Art Hobler, Porto; Galeria
Quattro, Leiria.
Barbara Walraven, a Dutch national, was born in Buenos
Aires in 1956.
She has lived in Portugal for about 25 years. With her hus-
band, Bert Holvast, she came in search of light and a space in
which to work and found these in a place where the sun can be
blinding and the landscape still cleanses our eyes. She lives and
works in the Alentejo, near Castelo de Vide.
Her work moves between painting, drawing and sculp-
ture.
She uses and explores the possibilities of the least expect-
ed materials (soap, wax, organza, plastic and glass), using them
either as bases or as materials, and her work often consists of
ephemeral installations, musings on a theme, a space or an
idea. She fell in love at first sight with the Robinson Factory,
where she has exhibited many installations since 1997, when
the factory was in full production mode.
Some of her other exhibitions: Fort Altena, the
Netherlands; Fort Vuren, the Netherlands; the Monastery of
São Martinho, Mire de Tibães, Braga; Portalegre’s Museum of
Tapestry – Guy Fino; the Water Museum, Patriarcal, Lisbon;
the Robinson Factory, Portalegre; the Fadagosa Spa, Beirã; Art
Hobler Gallery, Porto; Quattro Gallery, Leiria.
