GEOLOGICAL STRENGTH INDEX FOR JOIN-TED ROCKS (Hoek and Marinos, 2000)
From the lithology, structure andsurface conditions of the discontinuities, estimates be too precise. Quoting a ran-ge from 33 to 37 is more realistic thanstating that GSI=35. Note that the tabledoes not apply to structurally controlladfailures. Where weak planar structuralplanes are present in an unfavorableorientation with respect to the excava-tion face, these will dominate the rocksmass behaviour. The shear strength ofsurfaces in rocks that are prone to dete-rioration as a result of changes in mois-ture content will be reduced is water ispresent. When working with rocks in thefair to the right may be made for wetconditions. Water pressure is dealt withby effective stress analysis.
