The other places to visit in town are the esplanadeand the bicycle lane along the Charles River, from where youcan enjoy a magnificent view of Boston, of the AlewifeBrook reservation, comprising forests, lakes and swamps,also the habitat of numerous native and migratory birds,and the Fresh Pond reservation, an artificial lake surroundedby trails for pedestrian and cyclists and a golf course,located on the city’s western border. But we also want 2015 to be the year in which we all get toknow each of the nine islands of the Azores a little bit better.Let’s start by the Graciosa Island and the village of SantaCruz de Graciosa. A very agreeable village due mainly to itswell-kept appearance and the distribution of the houses, toits Rossio, where sublime araucarias and elms can be seenreflected in two curious peat lands, and to its picturesqueMonte da Ajuda. Santa Cruz da Graciosa has always beenthe destination of relevant personalities of their time whichhistory has immortalized. Padre António Vieira was left onthe island by a corsair following a shipwreck on CorvoIsland; the French writer François-René Chateaubriand,fleeing France from the French Revolution and heading tothe United States of America, disembarks on the island andrefers to his stay there in his works; Almeida Garrett in1814,in his youth and while visiting an uncle, might havewritten his first verses there which already revealed histalent as a poet; and prince Albert I of Monaco, who duringhis hydrography work and studies on marine life, descendedthe Furna do Enxofre, having been one of the first to havesupported the creation of an adequate access which wouldenable to make that place a tourist attraction.Having you with us is a pleasure and a challenge! The 10th edition of Sharing the Musictook place at Coliseu Micaelense on the 8thNovember, organized by Associação Musical VoxCordis, sponsored by SATA, with the aim ofmaking children become more interested inchoral music as well as promote culture in thecouncil of Ponta Delgada and in the wholeRegion. This year’s edition had, once again,renowned Portuguese artists. Ala dosNamorados, Jorge Palma and Vasco Azevedo,who were accompanied by the Vox Cordis choir,directed by the guest conductor Jorge Alves. Foi, certamente,um domingo diferente para o público quese deslocou em grande número a PontaDelgada para assistir a uma prova que jáconquistou enorme popularidade na ilhade São Miguel.

Theevent which was formerly known as TriatloPortas do Mar, took place on November 9thand was organized by the Associação Portasdo Mar and by the Federação Portuguesa deTriatlo der Portugal, with the importantsponsorship of SATA, of the RegioanlGovernment and Ponta Delgada’s City Hall.We must also refer this sports rapid increasein popularity, having witnessed a significantincrease of entries as compared to last year. Itwas, indeed, a different Sunday for much ofthe public who went to Ponta Delgada towatch a sport event which is already verypopular on São Miguel Island.

Aliás, os contos tambémnão o são, muitas vezes. Há perspetivas abertas,não está tudo bem embrulhadinho. A canção temoutros vetores. Joga com duas formas de expressão,duas artes: a música e as palavras. Um dos traba -lhos que é essencial nas canções é fazer com queum não viva sem o outro. A dinâmica é diferentede um objeto escrito.Disse que se inspirava simplesmente ao olhar àvolta e ver o que se passa. Continua a ser assim?Não só. Há inspirações que surgem de leituras, de fil-mes, de pequenos acontecimentos da nossa vida.Tenho as antenas sempre ligadas. Aquilo que às vezesse apanha e pode parecer comum pode ser especial.Há que procurar o que há de especial no banal e reti-rar-lhe o cliché. Olhar por outro lado. Tenho muitasfrases corriqueiras nas canções, mas são enquadradasnum sentido global que as torna mais especiais.

There are narra-tives and characters, but they are not stories with a begin-ning and an ending. Anyhow, neither are short storiesmost of the times. They are open –ended, not everythingis wrapped neatly. Songs have other vectors. They haveto do with expression, with two arts: music and words.One of the things which is essential in songs is to makethese two things inseparable. The dynamics are differentform that of a written object. You said you got your inspiration just by lookingaround you and observing what’s going on. Is it stilllike this?Not only. There are inspirations that come from reading,from films, from small things that happen in our life. I’malways on the lookout. Things we might witness that seemordinary might be special. One needs to look for what’sspecial in the banal and remove the cliché from it. Toobserve from another side. I have many unexceptionalsentences in my songs, but they are set in a context witha global meaning which makes them more special.Is there still space for a more interventional type ofmusic? There are always songs that focus more on social aspectsand others in more interrogative ones focusing on love,on the everyday life of characters confabulating on values,on life. There are no labels. My universes are more fluid.

o chegar à porta do Pavilhãodo Mar, local onde se realizaa VI edição do Wine inAzores, que é o maior even-to empresarial dos Açores,deparo-me com um mar degente, comprovando, rapida-

mente, a grande popularidade que o evento granjeia nailha de São Miguel e na própria Região. Depois de adqui-rir o meu ingresso e o copo necessário para a degustaçãodo vinho, reparo na grande azáfama que se faz sentirno local. Apesar de ser considerado um evento empre-sarial, o Wine in Azores é conhecido por atrair pessoasde todos os quadrantes, podendo ser vistas, nos seus 3dias de duração, pessoas de variadas faixas etárias, todasreunidas neste fim-de-semana de outubro com um obje-tivo comum: degustação de vinhos de ótima qualida-de. Inicio, então, a minha ronda pelo pavilhão na buscade vinhos que nunca provei, decidindo que hoje seriaa noite da prova dos brancos. À medida que ia degus-tando os diversos vinhos, provenientes das diferentesregiões do país, o meu conhecimento aumentava, deri-vado das minhas breves (outras mais demoradas) con-versas com os produtores, que amavelmente me iamexplicando o processo de produção e a história daque-

After purchasing my ticket,and the necessary glass to taste the wine, I immediatelynotice the bustle at the place. Though it’s considered to bean entrepreneurial event, Wine in the Azores is known toattract people from various areas. One can see during the 3days the event lasts, people of different ages all of them gat-hered on this October weekend with one common objective:to taste wines of superior quality. I start my tour of the pavi-lion looking for wines I’ve never tasted before, having deci-ded this evening I would taste white wine. As I tasted theseveral wines, from various regions of the country, my know-ledge increases, due to my brief (sometimes not as brief) con-versations with the producers who kindly explained me thehe production process and the history of that which is con-sidered the “nectar of gods”. In thesequence of several wine-themed dinners organized by AltisGrand Hotel, the chef of the Lisbon hotel, Rui Santos Silva,invited his colleague of the Azorean restaurant Anfiteatro,Pedro Oliveira, for a culinary dialog which combined crea-tions of the capital and the Azorean islands. Both createda menu from scratch for a tasting menu in the hotel’s pano-ramic restaurant, the D. Fernando Grill, with a view ofdowntown Lisbon. "O convite surgiu com oobjetivo de tomarmos contacto com produtos típi-cos pouco conhecidos em Lisboa e vinhos que nãosão usuais no nosso dia-a-dia", explicou o chef RuiSantos Silva, com uma carreira longa na hotelaria detopo. Proposta que teve recetividade imediata nasilhas. "Gostamos de apresentar o nosso trabalho forada Região. É uma troca de culturas, ideias e conheci-mentos, e uma oportunidade de divulgar os produ-tos açorianos", referiu o chef Pedro Oliveira. Uma revisitação dos petiscos tradicionais serviu deintrodução aos pratos principais. De Lisboa, apresen-tou-se o fígado de pato em pastel de nata, estufadi -nho de moelas, figo fresco e pata negra. As ilhas con-trapuseram a entrada Mar dos Açores: lapas confita-das, mousse de ouriços, tártaro de lírio e planta dogelo, espécie que cresce na costa insular. A sequência teve o seu auge nas composições principais,com o prato de peixe atribuído aos Açores (boca negra,lula, couve-flor e o sabor ativo da açafroa, ravioli debúzios e espuma de mandarina e maracujá) e o de carnea Lisboa (o típico leitão de Negrais cozinhado a baixatemperatura, acompanhado com batata violeta, legumesminiatura e molho de laranja, tomilho e pimenta deJava). We start our tour in Terreirodo Paço, the square that welcomes the river with open arms.The space is vast and airy and the yellow of the buildingsaround it intensely reflect the sunlight. its values and potential, outside the archipelago.

In order to assure the efficient coordination of actions among the

Houses of the Azores and between them and the Autonomous

Region of the Azores, the World Council of Houses of the Azores

(CMCA) was created back in 1997. This Council has been

meeting on a yearly basis ever since.

Considering all of this, we would like to introduce SATA

passengers to the 14 Houses of the Azores spread throughout

the world: in Brazil, the Houses of the Azores of Rio de Janeiro,

São Paulo, Santa Catarina Island, State of Rio Grande do Sul

Now, in these pages, we stress and pay tribute to several Azorean

institutions whose mission is bringing Azoreans and Azorean

descendants together by promoting our culture. The action taken

by these institutions is essential for projecting the Region beyond

our borders. These institutions are the Houses of the Azores.

Some of these houses were created over 50 years ago, and

materialize the soul of the Azores in the Azorean communities

living outside the islands, whether in mainland Portugal, Canada,

USA, Brazil or Uruguay.

The 14 existing Houses of the Azores share goals and serve as

gathering areas for Azorean communities to state their cultural values.

In fact, these institutions are dynamic organisms which promote and

disseminate cultural, social and training initiatives of all kinds. Similarly,

Foi o caso de William Hickling Prescott que, concluí-da a formatura em Direito na Universidade deHarvard, veio passar uma temporada de seis meses(1815-1816) a Ponta Delgada nas casas do seu avômaterno, Thomas Hickling, um rico mercador deBoston que aqui residia desde 1769. Repetindo umpadrão característico de todos os visitantes da NovaInglaterra, o jovem Prescott maravilhou-se com aexuberância subtropical da vegetação e não poupouelogios à amenidade do Inverno açoriano, embora omesmo não se possa dizer da sua apreciação sobre asociedade local. William Hickling Prescott viria a serum dos mais afamados hispanistas norte-americanosde meados do século XIX, após publicar História dosReis Católicos (1838), História da Conquista doMéxico (1843) e História de Filipe II (1855), mas,como observou o seu amigo e biógrafo GeorgeTicknor, o único momento da vida em que contac-tou com uma sociedade ibérica foi, precisamente,nos Açores.Um ano depois de Prescott, outro jovem saído dosportões de Harvard visitaria a ilha de S. Miguel. John

White Webster frequentara o curso de Medicina e asua formação na área das Ciências Naturais encon-trou no vulcanismo açoriano óbvios motivos de inte-resse. Webster foi aqui acolhido por Thomas Hickling,com cuja filha Harriett veio a casar no decurso da esta-dia em Ponta Delgada (1817-1818), tendo depoisregressado a Boston onde viria a publicar um livrocom o resultado das observações feitas nos Açores –A Description of the Island of St. Michael, comprising anaccount of its Geological Structure (1821). Apesar dotítulo sugerir estarmos perante uma obra de cariznaturalista, trata-se de um clássico exemplo deLiteratura de Viagem e o primeiro testemunho destegénero a ser publicado nos Estados Unidos da Américasobre os Açores. Mesmo residindo em Boston, John White Websternunca quebrou os laços com a ilha onde continuavaa viver parte da família da sua mulher, como prova ofacto de ter sido eleito membro correspondente daSociedade Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense nadécada de 1840, razão pela qual o crime que come-teu em Novembro de 1849 na cidade de Cambridgeteve algumas ondas de choque em Ponta Delgada. Oreferido crime, o assassinato e incineração do Dr.George Parkman nas instalações da Universidade deHarvard, causou sensação não só por envolver doisilustres “Boston Brahmins”, mas também pelo requin-te posto no processo de ocultação das provas, tendosido necessário recorrer a especialistas de medicinaforense e dentária para dar John White Webster comoculpado do homicídio. Condenado à morte, Webstertornou-se uma celebridade pelas piores razões e, infe-lizmente para os Açores, o seu livro sobre a ilha de SãoMiguel é desde há muito uma raridade bibliográfica.

(1817-1818), having later on returned to Boston wherehe would publish a book as a result of the observationsmade in the Azores - A Description of the Island of St.Michael, comprising an account of its GeologicalStructure (1821). Despite the title of the book sugges-tion it deals with themes related to nature, it’s a clas-sic example of Travel Literature and the first accountof the kind to be published in the United State ofAmerica about the Azores.Even though residing in Boston, John White Webstermaintained the connection with the island where partof his wife’s family still lived, as proves the fact of himhaving been elected as a correspondent member of theSociedade Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense in thedecade of 1840, reason for which the crime he com-mitted in November 1849 in Cambridge had strongrepercussions in Ponta Delgada. This crime, the mur-der and cremation of Dr. George packman in the pre-mises of Harvard University, caused a stir, not onlybecause it involved two famous “Boston Brahmins”, butalso because of the all the trouble he went through tohide the evidence, it having been necessary to call formedical and dental forensic experts to prove John WhiteWebster guilty. Indicted for murder, Webster became acelebrity for all the wrong reasons and, unfortunatelyfor the Azores, his book on the island of São Miguelhas long been a bibliographic rarity.A Description of the Island of St. Michael(1821) is an important account of AmericanTravel literature on the Azores.

PERFECT STARSWhile the Azorean airspacedoesn’t open to competitors and our everlasting geographyof tender dilacerations prevents the establishment of a JoãoJardim at the head of the archipelago’s politics, let’s prai-se the Lord – and the reader will understand in a minutethe Catholic reference – for the Fajã de Santo Cristo.I arrived there for the first time with poems by AlexandreO’Neill in my perilous pockets and riding a motorcyclewhich I had ridden resilient for three quarters of an hourthrough ravines, dirt tracks, reminded of our smallnesson this planet. São Jorge, that scar of land turned intoAtlantic astonishment, has several declarations for futu-re memory on why nature – in fact – is not ours. Now tosee humanity arrive to live on these sediments, workedby goldsmiths with patience capable of enduring millionsof years, is an excellent poetic account of to what extentwe might have been touched by gods.The O’Neill has turned-down pages, an old habit withpoetry books. I begin turning-down in a gerund dance thepages where my favorite verses dwell, convinced that in

encontra o sublimemais puro. Um céuestrelado de fazer

inveja à melhor trippsicadélica e

acompanhado damúsica perfeita do

silêncio.

Caldeira – a electricidade é de gerador e, se por umexemplo um fogão avariar, é vê-lo amarrado nessas taismotas de tracção às 4 - nas quais apetece descer cadafajã jorgense como se a nossa vida dependesse disso(e após 4 fininhos Melo Abreu é muito provável quedependa) – a caminho da civilização mais próxima.Há um endireita neste lugar bem como um par de faz--tudo, populares iluminados que humi lham com asua sabedoria vulcânica as pretensões inevitavelmen-te vindas na bagagem dos forasteiros. E um café, debandeirinhas e notas do mundo inteiro decorado,símbolo do eterno retorno num canto do paraíso.É também pátria de surfistas – essas pessoas semprefelizes, parece que quem adorava o Sol em civilizaçõespassadas não estava de todo errado – e tem rochadisponível bastante onde gaivotas e cagarros produ-zem verdadeiros pollocks sem enjoar.Mas por muitos mergulhos, passeios, reflexões, esta-dos zen que possam ser experimentados aqui, é ànoite – quando as fotografias dos smartphones maisse estragam – que se encontra o sublime mais puro.Um céu estrelado de fazer inveja à melhor trip psi-cadélica e acompanhado da música perfeita do silên-cio. Interrompam-na com peixe apanhado por vós acrepitar na grelha, assegurem-se de que ao lado seencontra quem mereça esta partilha, e esqueçam-seda morte por um par de horas.Volto ao O’Neill à luz de velas e viajo nos tempos.Até aos séculos onde este era o luxo possível da luze até às décadas nas quais o poeta escrevinhou as pri-meiras versões agora impressas nas páginas que mefaltam dobrar. A açorianidade apaga os últimos calo-res da grelha para se acender no céu. O silêncio vairezando.

And a coffee shop decora-ted with flags and bank notes from all over the world, a sym-bol of the forever coming back to a corner of paradise.And also home to surfers – those people who are alwayshappy, it seems that those people in the past that wors-hipped the sun weren’t all that wrong – and it has enoughavailable rock where seagulls and Cory’s shearwaters pro-duce real pollocks without getting sick.But despite how many dives, walks, reflections, or Zenmoods you might experience here, it’s during the night –when photos taken by smartphones get ruined most of thetimes – that we can experience the purest sublime. A starrysky causing envy to the best psychedelic of trips accompa-nied by the perfect music of silence. Interrupt the night withfish caught by you cooking on the grill, make sure you areaccompanied by someone who deserves to share this withyou, and forget death for a couple of hours. I come back to O’Neill by candlelight and I travel in time.Until the centuries where this was light’s sole luxury anduntil the decades in which the poet scribbled the first ver-sions now printed on pages I have yet to turndown. BeingAzorean deletes the last heat from the grill to set the skyon fire. Silence goes on praying.
